    In our latest Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim video we tell you about the Great Jarls of Skyrim!
    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
    The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

    My favorite Jarl has to bee Baalgruf, here is why:
    He hates the thalmore but he does not give a damn about politics, he only cares about the safety of his people. When the dragonborn first came to warn him that dragons were coming back, he sends a contingent of gaurds to the less defensible Riverwood despite risking an attack from that pompous Jarl from the south, saying he will not sit idly by while a dragon burns his hold and slaughters his people. He humbly asks the dragonborn to help his hold on multiple occasions, even letting the dragonborn use his own home as a trap to save not only his living people, but the heroes of Sovngarde, the man in order to keep the peace damn near ended the war right there for trying to call together a peace treaty, only reason why it failed was because everyon'es egos were too damn big.
    In short, almost every single decision I have seen this Jarl made it has been soley for the peace, protection, and prosperity of his people, he is everything a leader should be and if my dragonborn could he would bestow HIM the mantle of High king.

      I love balgruuf, but I also can't align myself with the imperials and thalmor (Usually playing a nord in game anyway) and so I was sad and disappointed to see him go during the war and be replaced with the other guy who doesnt seem like a jarl in any way, so much so I dont even remember his name.

    • @ayajade6683
      @ayajade6683 6 лет назад +26

      I only side with the imperials because I feel the stormcloaks are unknowing pawns in the thalmor hands and I can't betray Jarl Baalgruff because he's not mad he's just disappointed in you and it hurts because he's an amazing Jarl

      He needs to take tips from Machiavelli. He is a caring ruler but the reason everyone is trying to assassinate him is because they see him as weak. There are more than enough that he's mismanaging his hold and angering everybody. From blatantly tolerating a shrine to Talos despite imperial rule to having feuding clans threatening to break the peace, there are problems galore in Whiterun and there are no signs he's doing anything to fix them. Still, he's probably the best of the starting Jarls, excluding Ulfric.

    • @wildefice1
      @wildefice1 6 лет назад +4

      He didn't risk his people though, he knew the empire had more power and resources than Ulfric did, so he made the logical decision and accepted the bribe and pulled his resources from the empire to protect his people from the conflict that Ulfric would no doubt bring sooner or later. If you are a leader of a hold you can't just act on your personal feelings, that is how you bring your people to ruin. Baalgruf knows a 2nd war is coming against the Thalmore. Or at least that is what is implied between his conversations between his advisor, house carl and brother. He is looking a head and making sure his people survive and prosper even in the uncertain times of the 4th era. So I am not sure where you are getting the idea that he is risking his people. From Ulfric? If he sided with Ulfric the empire bolstered with the ranks of the thalmore would have came in and wiped out Skyrim, because they don't have any allies what so ever. So the risk of joining up with the empire causes the least amount of risk and protects his people and allows him to save his resources for later and far more important conflicts.

    I wouldn't mind a Maven Black-Briar video. It would pretty cool to learn more about that woman and her schemes or how she manages to "run" Riften without being Jarl.

    • @Janoha17
      @Janoha17 6 лет назад +2

      Maven has the Thieves Guild in her pocket thanks to Mercer Frey, and knows the Black Sacrament to call on the Dark Brotherhood whenever she wants someone dead. And she has Jarl Lalia's ear, most likely by being a Thane. She also likely has ties to the Thalmor, since someone had to let them into the city without the Stormcloak sympathizers drawing their weapons on them.

    • @paladinmaguireofbos3347
      @paladinmaguireofbos3347 3 года назад

      Maven is a business genius. She is an idiot in morality but her sense of business makes up for that. She is probably one of the most well known people in the empire. She is definitely the most influential person in the city of riften, and she is by far the most powerful leader in the entire criminal underworld of tamriel. She owns the most successful meadery in skyrim and knows how to deal with people who become nuisances. An example of this is when Louis letrush is brutally butchered by mercenaries hired by maven if the player warns maven of letrushs plans.

    My favorite Jarl is definitely Balgruuf in the sense that he is a strong and respectable leader with deep convictions. I was sorely disappointed when he returned Ulfric's ax to him.
    As far as the civil war goes; i sided with Ulfric for a single reason. Ulfric challenge the high king to single combat and beat him plain and simple. It doesn't matter what the little details are about fairness, it was a sanctioned duel. The end. By Skyrim's law, Ulfric was High King as soon as that duel was done. As soon as the empire stuck their noses in, they picked a fight and were 100% in the wrong. The rest is details

    Beth really screwed up with the Jarls and the way their courts are assembled, leaving many roleplaying options off the table. Traditionally, Jarls are warlords, supported by the land owning gentry, his Thanes. Thanes are gifted their land by the Jarl for services rendered and are required to mange their steading, provide taxes, and raise/maintain troops to fight for the Jarl. This puts a lot of power in the hands of the Thanes, and since the Jarl's personal forces tend to be small he must endeavor to keep his Thanes rich and happy, lest he end up deposed, or worse dead. Plus, there would always be infighting between the Thanes as they attempted to curry favor, resolve disputes, or build allegiances. Much fun.
    This dynamic is only hinted at in Skyrim, and would have provided considerable depth to the politics of each hold. Imagine instead of being offered Breezehome, the player was instead gifted Greymoore, or one of the other lost settlements in Whiterun hold, and tasked with rebuilding it, managing it, and raising troops to defend it. Or being gifted Heljarchen Hall with the task of building a defensible garrison against Imperial "aggression".

    Going into this my ranking of the jarls is
    1. Ulfric (doing what is best for Skyrim, see his speech when you first walk into the Palace of the Kings)
    2. Balgruff ( a good man/leader cares for his people.)
    3. Lalia (she doesn't know of the corruption of her court, and fights it)
    4. Idgrog( trying to be progressive and introduce a court wizard to Morthal)
    5. Igmund (a fine ruler doing what he can to fight the forsworn, and is prepared for dragons, funds research, but lets the silver bloods have too much control, and doesn't do much to stop them.)
    6. Elisif ( she's nice but has no idea how to be jarl, as a jarl she is incompetent, as a person though she'd be like number 1 or 2)
    7. Skald ( he is an extremist support of stormcloaks, the bad kind, and not much else, still tho hes fighting for the right side)
    8. Siddgier( he doesn't do much to govern his province, just selfishly uses his position to make back room deals and live a comfy life, but he is smart enough to leave the governing to someone who cares, ie his steward.
    9. Korir( doesn't realize his court steward is a lire and thief, resists the College, the only hope Winterhold has, because they *may* have destroyed the city.

      Skyrim under pure Nordic rule has a habit of bouncing back from destruction and strife at an incredibly fast rate.Ulfric May or may not be a bastard but he’s a bastard who also happens to be the best hope that Tamriel has of stopping the Thalmor and rebuilding the empire once it falls(and fall it will,there is no stopping it)
      The Dragonborn most likely won’t live long enough to aid Tamriel,considering how things went first time around with Talos and King Culacain.

    I kinda wish they had included the alternate Jarls. Like is there anything about sorli the builder besides just needing someone to fill a position in morthal? Is there anything to Kraldar besides liking the College? or how about the Brunwulf the Politician

    • @InquisitorThomas
      @InquisitorThomas 2 года назад

      I think there’s more to Kraldar than liking the College, he comes from an old family that lived in Winterhold and he wants to actively work towards restoring Winterhold to its Glory Days. Korir is so obsessed with finding definitive proof that the College caused the Great Collapse that he doesn’t think about the future of his Hold outside of punishing the College.
      Sorli is pretty much the most generic Jarl in the game though. She owned a mine just outside of Morthal, and didn’t have any dialogue before becoming Jarl. She seems to be very goal oriented and sees being Jarl of Morthal as a stepping stone to greater positions, but beyond that she’s a solidly nothing character.

    I have a build idea for you all. (Tell me if it has been done im not sure)
    Build name: Shadow Mage.
    Main skills: Conjuration, entire theif area except alchemy, OH, archery.
    Race: Khajiit
    Backstory: Hailing from Elsweyr, the Shadow Mage was raised with his fellow orphans in the city of Rimmen. He never knew much about his old family, except that they were natural conjurers. By the age of 7, he could conjure his own familiar, and impressed his friends with his ability to get around unseen. After a while though, his rapidly expanding knowledge of conjuration was becomeing a problem for the orphanage keepers, and he was exiled from the orphanage. The new teen, knowing fully well that he could not see his only friends ever again, started to travel the lands, stealing from or attacking anyone that had anything useful on them. Eventually he ended up on the border of Skyrim, and was ambushed by imperial soldiers after being mistaken for a StormCloak. He was knocked out with brutal force and suffered brain damage and memory loss, causing him to forget all of his conjuration knowledge and his abilty to sneak well. He later woke up on a carriage into Helgen, where he was to be executed.
    Factions: The shadow mage decides to join all factions except the companions (optional) to help him remember his former abilities. He also joins the Volkihar vampires if you have the Dawnguard dlc.
    Playstyle: The Shadow Mage uses his variety of conjuration spells to overwhelm his enemies with endless thralls, atronachs, and dremora. He is also happy to conjure his own weapons (of any sort) to join the fight himself.
    Gear: Armour with enchantments to reduce conjuration costs. Uses light armour or robes to help him sneak.
    Standing stone: Use the theif of mage stone in the early stages of the game and when all main skills are at a reasonable level (level 60-100) switch to either the atronach stone or the shadow stone.
    Skill trees:
    Conjuration: all perks
    Sneak: all perks
    OH: all except critical charge
    Arch: all perks. Only one in crit shot.
    PP: all perks except poison
    Thats my build thanks for reading if you did have a great day.

    I think my favorite Jarl is Ravencrone. She seems like the only jarl who knows what the fuck is actually going on and thinks logically albeit in a unorthodox manner.
    Skal thinks the dragons and the nightmares plaguing Dawnstar are the gods punishing them for the outlawing of Talos worship. He's paranoid and war hungry. He wants a battle to come to Dawnstar so he can get his glory.
    Siddgeir is a corrupt man, taking bribes and dealing with shady people. His rise to power was most likely a coup in an effort to gain power. He care's more about the perks f being a jarl more than actually leading.
    Igmund severely underestimates the Forsworn threat and is in the pocket of the Sliverbloods.
    Laila is incredibly naive and is more of a puppet leader. All of Riften is in the back pocket of Maven Blackbriar. She's so blind to the corruption within her walls she doesn't even think Maven is a terrible woman and is friends with her. Maven who has the thieves guild under her thumb and will kill or forcefully remove anyone in her way.
    Elisif is practically powerless and just a figurehead. All major decisions are made by Tulius and her stewards. She knows this too as she vocally brings it up multiple times.
    Korir is paranoid and stuck in the past. He hates what has become of his Hold and wishes to bring Winterhold back to glory. He blames the College for Winterhold's collapse even though he has no proof and if it wasn't for the fact that the college brings in much needed business he would probably kick the mages out or sack the place.
    Balgruff, while a great and noble man is indecisive about the war. He believes that Whiterun can remain neutral and not get involved in the war. A naive belief that is quickly shattered when Ulfric attacks and is forced to side with the Empire.
    And Ulfric himself? Ulfric is a honorable man, but his willful disregard for the non-human population of his hold is disgraceful and unfitting of a leader. Even if his cause is just he is not fit to lead Skyrim if he doesn't care about the needs of a 1/4 of his population. Not to mention he's unknowingly a tool of the Thalmor who are using the war to weaken the Empire and Skyrim to make them easy prey.

    Hey Fudgemuppet , I have a idea for a future build if you ever need any idea's. A mage only Redguard called the Genie. The Genie is a redguard mage that studied the art of destruction and conjuration as well as sand magic in isolated locations so nobody could discover what he was doing. Later on the authority of Hammerfell find out about the Genie and instead of coming for him they offer him a ultimatum. Either go to skyrim and help to imperials beat the stormcloaks so that they have a better chance at fighting the thalmor or be hunted down by the Hammerfell's army's and killed. Sorry for bad spelling and if my sentences did not make much sense but i hope you flesh this idea out or put it in consideration.

    It WOULD be interesting to learn more about the potential Jarls. I went through with the peace conference on my main file, and got what I considered to be the best result, with the Empire gaining two minor holds and the Stormcloaks gaining Markarth. The Markarth one wasn't necessarily a "good" result, considering a Silver-Blood was put on the throne, but that part is unavoidable, and the replacement Jarls for Dawnstar and Winterhold are definitely preferable to the "default" Jarls. I still wish there was a way to keep Silver-Blood off the throne and remove Siddgeir, but such a result is heavily biased towards the Empire since the Stormcloaks would only gain one minor Hold and the Empire would gain two. Still, it'd be interesting to see how all the replacements act as Jarls.

    Ok since you told us to suggest something I taught I could have some interesting ideeas so here goes:
    Ideea Nr.1: Make a video series where you select 3 or how many you want fan builds and showcase them and also alow modded builds since you already covered so many vanilla ones, as long as you don't need to dowload to many mods or so to showcase the specific build.
    Ideea Nr.2: Make a series about the morality and your take on eatch choice in diferent questlines, where you explain what you think should be done(for example wether you think Cicero should be spared or not in the Dark Broterhood questline).
    P.S. Also at the fan builds you should tell us in a video what exactly we have to tell you in order to have a chance for our build to be showcased, for example:
    "These are the criteria you need to accomplish in order to be featured in a fan builds video: 1. Your character must have a backstory. 2. Mention all the key perks. 3. Mention the method of gaining xp. 4. Explain how he/she interacts with the world, is he a cutthroat criminal or a virtuous hero" and so on.

    I think regardless of opinions on Stormcloak vs empire it comes down to Ulfric or balgruuf being the best jarls in the game. Ulfric has the charisma and power to start and possibly win a rebellion against the empire which speaks a lot for his leadership. Whereas balgruuf is more tamed and careful with his diplomacy

  • @loraelstad8941
    @loraelstad8941 6 лет назад

    Hi Scott and FM guys! My suggestion is to possibly cover in ancient history, who first started war with others, once there were all the races settled. I'm not talking about the creation spirits and all their internal strife & division. This comment section seems mostly divided between Nord uprise & Empire. Everybody is claiming this land is their home. Falmer, Nord, Foresworn, etc. So, I wanna know about who settled Skyrim first & follow the change of hands & methods of these conquering powers, up to present time Skyrim, the game, takes place. Only then can I truly choose who I believe has the real rights to this land. But, sometimes, we have to choose an unappealing choice to keep a greater peace (think FO4 Far Harbor & Dima's secret). So, the current political climate & possible outcomes to who we choose to back would definitely be relevant. All these factors must be considered in the choice of where we lend our efforts & name among history.

    In all honesty Jarl Ulfric was perfectly within the law, he challenged the high king to a duel, the high king accepted and Ulfric won fair and square. Making him high king by right.
    There's is a video out there that goes more in-depth than I can as of rn.
    But it explains how Ulfric wasn't breaking the law and how Torrig trusted Ulfric A-LOT. If Ulfric thought he was more fit to rule Torrig would listen and respect Ulfric's views and choices. Torrig would've stood beside Ulfric if Ulfric had just asked.

It is implied he created the prophecy about the ternary of the sun so is it assumed he wrote an Elder-scroll? And just how old is the Vampire clan and how long has Serana been locked up? I have a theory. If after ES5, the Aldmeri Dominion goes to war with the Empire, (Like a Great War 2, symbolic of the World Wars). And this time, Cyrodil looses completely. Cyrodil gets absorbed into the Aldmeri Dominion from shear force. Then, the Dominion manages to convince Black Marsh that if the joined, the Dark Elves would never take slaves again. Then, they convince Morrowind that they will help rebuild if they join into the Dominion as well. That leaves Hammerfell, Skyrim, and High Rock. With no empire in Skyrim, they will surely stop civil waring and have peace. Hammerfell is already fighting. High Rock is fine, and will probably go back to scheming within the kingdims, if left alone; however, they aren't, because of the Aldmeri threat. So, Skyrim, High Rock, and Hammerfell will form an alliance to fight against the Aldmeri Dominion. If that happens, the Allience, (that is what I am calling it), will be filled with Cyrodilic refugees, and will be at all out war against a greater threat.
    That would be a sick ES5 setting.

      Another Guy He really should have just talked it out with Torygg, his heart is in the right place and I get where he is coming from, but he has a short fuse, and could perhaps do with a political advisor of some sort. Also, in his use of the voice against Torygg, he completely violated every principle taught to him by the greybeards. The use of the voice also made the fight completely unfair IMO.
