DIY Chair Makeover - Turning a boring plain chair into a designer Indian accent chair.

  • I found this chair at the Bangalore Hunts store, it's a plain chair with a boring upholstery. Many people would have liked it just the way it is, but not me. I want things to be brighter, have Indian elements, and be the main character. So it was time to do a chair makeover.
I ordered a sample 1 meter fabric from a brand called Simplico online, the website has several artists and designers who create artwork that is later available to print on different kinds of fabric for fashion and home decor. My initial idea was to use the the fabric for seat and backrest and the frame distress painted. Which was a disaster, I did not like the distress one single bit, and paired with the new seat upholstery, it looked horrendous.
So I painted over it in a bright red-orange color that I custom mixed with the paint I had at hand. The final result is stunning. I hope you like it too.
If you want to makeover a chair with just upholstery, you can do it yourself with the help of a staple gun. It's a useful tool for a home decor DIYer.
I am using a Miles stapler which is the most cost-effective one. You can get it on Amazon here amzn.to/4eGVEZ6
I am trying this for the first time, adding links to some of the products I have used, so I don't have to answer to individuals.
Fabric is from Simplico, the design is called Maharaja of Jaipur in Cotton canvas which is 650/- per meter, you can find it here symplico.com/p...

I liked the original version as it was a 1930’s neo modern style. The new version looks pretty too. But you will never get back the original version, that was a rarity.

These are all reproductions that are being manufactured as restaurant chairs. This was one such sample.

I love that distress painting. But with that printed cloth this looks more pretty. . Some solid colour cloth is good for that distressed paint, like bottle green, olive green, orange etc according to the room & other furniture

You are right. The distress would have looked amazing if the fabric choice was plain and the chair was the hero of the piece. I was desperate to use the fabric :D

Hi Preethi , loved your video with candid confessions . I am that person who doesn’t appreciate the look of distress paining . The final colour has turned out beautiful.Infact before you started distressing it , I had imagined this colour itself when you mentioned that you are going to transform it into orange . Little more peachish maybe . I enjoyed the process to. Wish you had included the glimpses of the final colour paining too. I liked the idea of being candid about your feelings instead of portraying idealistic approach . Keep going . I wait for your videos . Would you also take up order for transforming client’s furniture .

Thank you so much, Aparna. Really appreciate you taking the time out to leave me a detailed comment. Thank you again. I usually do furniture makeovers only for clients where I am styling. It usually doesn't make commercial sense to do one piece. May be I should be open to doing one off, if it excites me.
