This guide is thorough for beginners; I thank you ! RTS's can be quite hard to pick up and this type of pedagogy is simply perfect for this context. Thank you again
I thought for sure you were just gonna tease us at the end while rotating your building in front of us like that 😂 That bonus was exactly what I've been looking for! Thank you for the entire video!
Thank you for this amazing tutorial! Looks like I've still got a lot to learn, I've never used a single hotkey for this game but I want to integrate them into my gameplay.
fophuxake, there is a HUGE UI ability that makes the game 10 times easier (for me at least), but I have never seen or heard of anyone using it, or even knowing about it. I'll give one example: Make a ctrl group; like Ctrl-1 for all your military units. Now, select any building that builds anything (although I would suggest only military units for this example). Right click on any unit in a ctrl group (I find heroes the easiest to use). From now on, whenever that building makes a unit, it will automatically travel to that ctrl group, and also add itself to that group. It saves so much time and busy work, at least for me a learning player, I can't express how much I love it.
Quality content. Thanks Danielle. PS: You no longer have to shift click the resource after constructing the economic building except to attack wild animals.
Thanks :) Yes, I mentioned shift-clicking the goldmine itself as Greek villagers tend to go to wood by default when you build a storehouse, which is less than ideal.
@@Adribird Yeah, and you'd rather shift+click to gold than position the way your villagers are standing pre-build. Much more intuitive and faster esp for veterans.
Fantastic clear and straightforward explanations, and some especially helpful tips you saved to the very end! Thanks for these great tutorials. So far I've liked rebinding my production bldgs from 5,6,7,... to different buttons around my asdfg keys. But I like this tab cycling from one selection a lot better. I'm excited to try raiding while macroing again 3:)

fantastic video! thank you very much! I'd like to suggest a video regarding what gods are good for new players and/or reviews of gods and such, that'd be really useful
is there a way to keybind the shift-click functionality for selecting individual units within the current selection group? This is currently the bane of my existence. Great video!
Very thorough walkthrough. I would love to have your opinion on an idea. I was thinking that I would love to see aom implement a feature similar to that of sc2 regarding building menu. What I mean is that there should be a hotkey to enter the building construction menu that works like a toggle. The reason for this is that it would free up alot of hotkeys for command hotkeys. Right now alot of commands are bound to alt+hotkeys. For example garrison into building is alt+x. Imagine if x was free, you might be able to just press x instead. I understand that I can customize these, but I really like being able to use the grid system as it is. I think it's a very intuitive way to play rts. I used to play with legacy keys in sc2 and every other rts. The problem is that the keys are not transferable this way. Not between games, and not even between civs. So i relearned the game with grid keys and find they are simply superior. So i think a building menu would fix the issue of too many buildings and commands to fit into one grid. I don't think building is so taxing and usually is not so urgent as to make such a toggle a big inconvenience. But having to press alt and something else usually feels very unnatural to me and it's very often in a micro management situation which is very time constricted. Building usually happens in less stressful situations, and toggling is still easier than having to combine keys in my opinion. They already have sort of a toggle system for Norse troops. They have their stances and formations behind a toggle. So they already have conceded that this is a solution for some situations. I just think putting all buildings behind a toggle is a much more elegant approach. It would allow Norse troops to have the same command, stance and formation layout as other civs. Also it would free up keys for garrison, attack move, no attack, stop for all civs including villagers. Of course this system could be an alternative setting in the hotkeys settings side by side with current system and legacy. Long comment sorry 😅
Would this work similar to the AoE4 hotkey setup? It definitely makes a lot of sense. I have also heard a few people complain that the 4 rows of keys in the build/train panel is not ideal as obviously there are not 4 rows of keys on a keyboard. Three rows of keys and toggle for construction options would definitely be a nice alternative and I think it would make a lot of people happy!
Thanks for the great explanations. Units automatically joining a control group is an awesome tip I'd never have guessed. Is there any reason you say to shift queue the gold mine after building the camp or was it just an example? The villagers go to the nearest resource automatically as far as I've seen - though I guess if next to a woodline they might pick the wrong one.
Yes, this is precisely why I mentioned to shift click the gold mine :) If there is no wood nearby, they should default to gold, but there's nothing more frustrating than assuming they are mining gold only to check on them 2 minutes later and discover they are instead chopping wood. And for aggressive animals the vills will not always start auto hunting, so it's a good habit to shift-click the resource you actually want them to gather after building the dropsite.
I know you said hotkeys are subjective but would you consider exporting and sharing them for those who want to see? As someone who never plays RTS except Total War games I feel like the guidance would help. This video was good for getting me thinking about the logic behind hotkeys though which I appreciate.
Hey DJ - except for the building hotkeys, most of my hotkeys are bound to default keys. I also unbound any keys I did not think I would use. Please try the game with the default building and production hotkeys and see how it feels. Build up slowly (e.g. don't try and memorise all the hotkeys all at once, or try and learn any very niche/situational hotkeys yet) - learn just the buildings, production, heroes and control groups for now. Good luck!!
@fophuxake Do you just bind buildings to CTRL 1, 2, etc? I know you mentioned you can have all production buildings under one group, but does that mean you start with like a temple under 1, then build a barracks and add it to 1, and so fourth?
@@DJ-1Q84 I typically bind my starting town centre to 4, and then my scout/Pharaoh to 1. Then my military production I will slowly add to 2. So temple, and then any barracks buildings once they are built. Every new barracks or fortress building gets added to 2. If I have a forward military base and a home military base, I might rebind 2 so that only my forward base is included. This helps gets units into the fight faster. On water maps I make a control group for docks too.
@fophuxake I appreciate this info as it helps me get an idea of the logical progression of hotkey use throughout the game. I will follow your advice and try not to memorize too much at once. If you build a second TC do you give it a unique hotkey or add to 4? Do you hotkey your army as well?
@@DJ-1Q84 I don't usually add more TCs to 4 - instead I use the Ctrl-z to find my TCs when I have more than 1. I am quite lazy with my unit control groups and could definitely do better - you could try use 3 for all units, or you could just use the shift-idle military banner to bring all idle military to a location. I definitely do use the hero hotkeys though.
@@salamanje yeah, it's crazy the lack of leftie support in games! They have all these accessibility settings, but nothing that supports a not insignificant portion of the population! Best of luck!!
