  • In this video, I replace the alternator in a 2003 Mercedes E320.
    TRANSCRIPT:
    So in this video
We're going to be replacing an alternator
    in a 2003 Mercedes E320
    He's on his way now
    Step One, Disconnect the battery.
    Do the negative...negative side
There it is... Make sure it cant touch it
You don't want it coming back on and
    giving us a shock.
    Alright looks good.
Okay we're going to take off these covers.
So next we gotta remove the belt.
    Here's the tensioner
    17mm, on the tensioner.
    aaaand...
    Just turn it
And the slide... Actually I am just going to slide the
    belt off the alternator.
    There we go.
    And then
    Let go..
    Okay 11mm, right here
We have another 11mm on the bottom.
    There it goes..
    Chatter
There it is, and now, there is a 10mm nut
holding on the hot wire and an electrical connector
Oh this has got to be a 13mm.
Now there is an electrical connector
There it is! And then just fish it out
And... I don't know if you can hear that
But this was making a lot of noise
    Now for the new one.
This is the new one, nice and quiet.
    Plug in the electrical connector
    And then
    ...get it down there first.
    And now for the...positive cable
    Put the nut back on.
Definitely don't want to kill this.. Just snug it.
    There
We might need to pull out this sleeve a little bit
    There is this sleeve here.
Let's see if I can get a bite on it...
    There it is!
    Alright.
Alright so now... We have to re-route the belt
It is a good idea to draw a diagram, or have something before hand
But this pretty much all stayed intact so..
There we go! Make sure the belt is in the center of the pullys.
Now check all the pullys, make sure it's on all the pullys in the center... Nothing slipped off..
    Okay, Battery goes back on.
You don't want to strip it out.. There we go.
Let's put all the covers back on.
    Alright, lets start it up!
    Nice and quiet!

Thanks very much. Dealer wanted a grand for this job and local mechanic half that. Did it myself only replacing the voltage regulator. Total cost, 30 bucks. Those sleeves in the mounting bracket are a pain.

When the mechanic lifted the red cover on the battery, it was the negative terminal on the battery label. you directed him to do the negative terminal, he proceded to undo the red positive lead, labelled so on the battery surface.

had it done in less than half an hour!!! I love working mercedes cars. Only pita was the 13mm bolt was rusted so i hit it with pb blaster and it came loose. Also do not over tighten the bolts to the alternator because they will strip because it is aluminum

Be careful breaking loose the mounting bolts. Occasionally one of them will be seized to the timing cover, if forced the cover will break and then your replacing the timing cover. Also rec removing the ground cable from the battery.

my 03 w211, usually would give me battery consumer switched off, i put subwoofers and it dims the lights with high volume.. i replaced both main and aux batterys with gel Stinger batteries recently.. and my lights still dim, u think it might be voltage regulator not passing enough charge to altenator? and i still get that Battery consumer messege and a ABS light malfunction visit workshop after i changed my batteries

Thanks for the Fast Reply ; just another question sorry to bother you ; was your car winding as soon as you would crank it and continue to whine or Would the whining noise gets louder as you turn your steering wheel because I was more than sure it was the power steering pump butt usually if you have a bad pump he would get a lot Louder whining noise as turning the wheels your help and knowledge would be appreciated thank you.

    • @MattsMotorz
      @MattsMotorz  8 лет назад

Yeah, typically a bad pump gets louder when turning the wheel. Especially at a stand still. I cant remember the specifics for this case as it was a couple years ago.

  • @surplusbuyerliquidator934

good video didn't think it was going to be that easy I had a question I got a 2001 Mercedes CLK430 it's making a loud whining noise I was thinking is the power steering pump but as I turn the wheels the noise does not get louder so I've been reading sewing blogs and it might be the alternator bearing but there is no battery light on so I'm confused please reply as soon as possible thank you

    • @MattsMotorz
      @MattsMotorz  8 лет назад +1

A bad bearing doesn't really have any impact on the function of the alternator. It may make it less efficient but you aren't likely to get a battery light come on the dash. The problem is most likely the alternator bearing as this is a common issue with many cars.

    • @MattsMotorz
      @MattsMotorz  8 лет назад

+Rehaz Khan It is most likely the alternator again. Most likely you bought a rebuilt one (as most people do), and some times these just don't last very long. It is definitely under warrantee so bring it back where you got it from and get another one.
