Toranaga already won the war once Mariko stepped into the castle. And the best part is that he’s not even in this episode but everyone can feel his presence.
Mariko is "Crimson Sky". She was supposed to die to divide the great families and the Reagents and the high lords. Ishido has ALL of the Reagent's families, including Toranaga's hostage to control them. This just stopped all of that, her death was the only way given she makes everyone know publically that she is a high level Samurai and very noble herself and of a famous family with 1000 years of nobility history. She is well known and respected among all the Lords and famous families (the "really elite" people that are rich in feudal Japan). Remember, Ishido is a lord, but comes from a peasant's beginning. He has no noble bloodline to speak of. Mariko made this point clear during her announcement and the meeting that she was leaving in front of ALL the lords. You guys need to watch carefully, lots of nuance and subliminal meanings going on here, many sub-plots. This is not a casual watching show, must focus to catch it all. There's a lot of talking going on while it's playing. Just saying! Last point, Mariko even said this quickly during the episode.... she COULD NOT allow herself to be taken as another hostage, which is what the Ninja's (and Ishido) really wanted to accomplish (and they failed). Ishido would leverage her as another hostage and Crimson Sky would not work at all for Toranaga. She had to die. Toranaga and her knew this. RIP Mariko, what a badass!
To the guy who said, “that’s not real,” about Mariko standing in the middle of a fight: This whole show has shown us that she not only doesn’t fear death, but desires it. There’s power in “letting it come,” if it does. I think it fit her character, and the real woman she’s based on, perfectly.
If Mariko waa captured Ishido could've said she left, but her death will sow division between Ishido and the Christian lords, a call back to how he used Blackthorne in episode 2, her death will make Ishido look dishonorable for using Shinobi and going back on his word
Really was a brilliant plan. 1. make a scene as a highborn amongst highborns pointing out Ishido is a peasant and "we" don't have to follow orders from a peasant 2. The peasant is holding us captive in his castle are you going to just let him do this? 3. The peasant says one thing (grants passage) then does another (assassinates a Christian in the dark of night) . 4. Get sympathy from beloved childhood friend who controls regent. Completely undermined Ishido in everyway possible
If Ishido kidnapped Mariko, she could neither leave nor die, stopping her plan. But by ensuring she died by his hand, she’s turning everyone against him. She was a one woman army, taking down Ishido by showing the public who he really is.
You guys dont realise this whole thing is based on real people who died at this time in Japan. Mariko died in real life in an explosion. That happened in history. You can visit her grave in Kyoto
The way she read Lady Ochiba for filth. Called her a leafless branch in spring… and the epic one liner, “flowers are only flowers because they fall.” WHEW. A READ. A
"Crimson Sky" was never Toranaga's huge army staging an invasion. MARIKO WAS CRIMSON SKY. This was the long 14-year game. THIS is why Mariko was kept alive. They all knew that Ishido would never let her leave. This is why the Shinobi tried to kidnap her, rather than killing her outright like the others. Her death exposes Ishido as the corrupt, lying, hostage-taker that he is. The other noble families will revolt. And I predict that Ochiba will turn against Ishido.
@@Oakland510 No, Mariko's family was executed because her father killed Ochiba's father. Mariko's life was spared because, at the time, she was newly married to Buntaro. Mariko's father married her off to spare her life. Over the years, Buntaro refused to allow Mariko to unalive herself, which she asked to do every year. In her very last scene, she takes her father's name (rather than her husband's) to announce that she is completing his mission. Ishido was appointed one of the 5 regents by the former Taiko (the father of Ochiba's son) who died and left an heir too young to rule.
@@Oakland510 Sorry: what I meant is that Mariko's father always meant for her to help complete his mission, which was for Toranaga to become the leader. He knew Toranaga would unite Japan and rule justly. Even though she's disgraced because of her father's betrayal, Lady Mariko is still of nobility and respected amongst the other noble families.
Look at Mariko’s outfit during the “I am not some peasant” scene of this episode 👀 RED ROSES = BLOOD CRIMSON WHITE GARMENT = A BRIGHT SKY Everything that Mariko accomplished in Episode 9 is exactly what “Crimson Sky” was meant to accomplish when it was initially described in Episode 6: “A single, violent rush on Osaka castle that eliminates the council and forms a new government.” I think that Mariko-sama is that “single, violent rush on Osaka castle,” indicating that SHE is the true initiation of “Crimson Sky”… and has been all along. Toranaga’s plan to put “Crimson Sky” into effect depended on Mariko unleashing a quick and lethal attack on Ishido’s authority right in the heart of his stronghold, but to get her (his most powerful Chess piece) into position, he needed Ishido to feel safe (to feel like he had won), and the only way to do that was for Toranaga to completely convince everyone that he had given up fighting (which the death of his son and his closest friend allowed him to do very successfully). This also explains why Toranaga seemed to always keep Mariko-sama by his side, serving a dual purpose (as both a translator and his deadliest weapon hidden in plain sight), why he was upset that Buntaro hit her, why he wanted her to make a final decision about her intentions with Blackthorne, and why he refused to let her end her life too soon (until his plan was ready to be unleashed). “Crimson Sky” is almost like a Shogun version of “R+L=J,” or like Dumbledore hiding Voldemort’s final horcrux in plain sight… carefully preparing it to be sacrificed.
Mariko is an aristocrat while Ishido was a peasant. She made a veiled insult to Ishido when she was explaining how she shouldn’t be mistreated like the peasant Ishido really is. It’s also another aspect she is illustrating to high borns and other aristocrats/lords to not pledge their allegiance to a peasant. Her death only accentuates Ishido’s dishonorable methods and adds to the reasons for other lords to fall on Torinaga’s side
@@Oakland510 it’s just the culture and the social rules of that time where your lineage basically forms your entire identity. Discussion for social class and the injustice would be another topic but in relation to this story, it was vital for mariko to accentuate her high born lineage to relate other high borns to involving themselves into the fray to side with Toronaga. This is the “Crimson Sky” Torenaga was planning. It was to gather more alliances that takes away from Ishido’s advantage rather than a castle storm most people anticipated
Like the first thing Rob said all episode was “that’s autistic” when John asked Mariko to live for him 😭😭 I can never tell if bro gives a fuck about anything they watch
Akechi Mariko was modeled on Akechi Tama, whose father was a general who betrayed the Taiko's predecessor. The general's real name was Akechi Mutsuhide. Oddly, today he is regarded as a hero, and an example of loyalty. When Akechi Tama married, her last name became Hosokawa. When she converted to Christianity, she took the baptismal name Gracia (Grace), which was pronounced Garasha in Japanese. Hosokawa Gracia is buried in the temple of Tofukuji in Kyoto. One of her descendants, Hosokawa Morihiro, was Prime Minister of Japan from 1993 - 1994. When he retired from politics, he became a potter.
"...I will never be captive, or hostage, or confined." Mariko called out every lord who is scared to leave in an epic mic drop. Are they proud Samurai warriors, or cowards.
Crimson sky aka sunset, mariko is supposed to die ,she knew it was a one way trip ,her death will for sure cause a revolt of the high Lords from within ,divide and conquer from within, thats how you destroy your enemy, once they are divided and vulnerable toronaqa will àppear and take the castle
In fact, William Adams and Akechi Tama, the real-life counterparts of Anjin and Mariko, were never even met. Adams maintained a close friendship with Tokugawa but no relationship with Tama. But the surprise raid on her camp by Ishida was historically accurate. Tama refused capture and commanded one of her servants to kill her.
I think the only things i've heard Rob say every episode of the series so far has nothing to do with this show but just needlessly roasting one of his boys
To be fair to the Marikos son, he will live no matter who ends up winning. Cause if ishido wins hes marrying one of the Christian loards daughters and if toranaga wins hes marikos son so hes allowed to live 😂
Yo, your boy in the Emirates sweater, just after the fight scene, finds the show kinda boring?. Just an observation… he’s falling asleep. (timecode: 11:22-11:32 mark) 😮
I loved the scheming and the politics in this episode. And women of the samurai class did not commit seppuku (honorary suicide by cutting the abdomen). For women its jigai - cutting the throat or stabbing the heart.
The show is amazing and it got me to read the book it is based on by episode 6. They moved around the timings but apart from two VERY major moments, did in the end get it all packed in so far. I can only hope with one episode left that it ends on a high or adds them in! The only thing I dislike about this show is they stripped john right back to the bones, took away his agency and made him a bit whiney in the middle of the show. The book shows with certainty that he can fight (tho ofc with swords not as well) and his bravery is without question. Many characters men and women openly respect him, and behind closed doors appreciate the effort he makes to try and assimilate. Omi / Yabu / Kiku / Fuji. (I did post this on another vid but it made some comments, so I put it here)
They altered his character to match more closely William Adams who was a footnote in the real history. The real Mariko, Akechi Tama's death was an actual turning point to the benefit of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Also, by moving Blackthorn to the background more, there is more time to develop the Japanese characters. If you noticed they also diminished the role of the Jesuits etc. Since the story is based on actual history, I think the choice is justified. For example, the part in the book where Blackthorn attempts seppuku because Yabu threatens to kill the peasants of Ito, doesn't make any sense. There is not way he would do that. It would mean destroying his own source of wealth. Blackthorn actually committed to killing himself also wasn't realistic. In other words, the series actually evaluates portions of the book. Clavell was not an expert on Japanese history and he misunderstood a lot and got things wrong.
