  • Due to a cold spell, we unfortunately lost a hard drive which contained all of the video footage of the actual road building process, but still, having our very own road built by our very own hands is pretty exciting! Thanks for watching and subscribing!

    Boy I still remember that day, heck it was 35 years ago...and I remember. A road. It was awesome. A well drilling rig (good deal cause I worked on it) was next. Water, a road and water, What more could a guy need?
    Long story here with a tip.
    Like you I live where there is a lot of precipitation, rain and snow, and like you we have a hill to drive up. We did the big road base rock and then added the smaller and did it right...water, wheel rolling with a heavy truck, and still every few years after I regrade and blade the road carefully, I would need more rock. Then, my brother, a general contractor specializing in dirt moving etc called one day, excited. A big state paving project was grinding up asphalt and he could get the grindings. Yep...recycled asphalt grindings.
    48 tons later, and a lot of water, and a rented roller, and shazam...it looks like asphalt, only coarser, (good in winter when ice/snow etc) and it doesn't vanish. It doesn't run off, it seems impervious to rain. It doesn't move.
    5 years in it looks like they day we put it down, and...no dust in the summer.
    So, on that long list of stuff you got, file that little tidbit away for after the house is up and all the heavy truck traffic has packed the gravel as tight as it is it is gonna get...and you hear about a asphalt grinding project going someplace.
    You guys are tough, smart and a helluva team. Keep plugging away. I am 62 and plotting out our "last house"...so watching you is good for me, LOL.

    Your van, backhoe, saw, and even your chainsaw needs a “ racing stripe”!

    After watching all of your new Homestead videos I needed to warm up so I went back to the boat in southern climes and watched one where you took us all along for tacos. I feel better now.

    They should chain their tailgate to spread a thinner and even base.

      We actually suggested that but large chunks of rock were frozen together and kept plugging up the gate. Ugh!

    Looking Great! Would like to see a little more behind the scenes footage. Your van setup, how you prepare your meals, trail cams of local wildlife, and maybe a blueprint of the house, or site plan? Love the vids!! Stay warm and dry!!!!

    WOW ! Great job with lots of hard work. A hard working couple with a direction, proper 24/7 stove in the shed and coffee, doesn't get much better,

    Looking good guys. Darn hard work, but the best part is you can stand back and see every inch of improvement, very gratifying.

    The trials and tribulations you endure just to have a place to call your own!
    (I'm referring to the lost hard drive, not building a road; that's expected)

    Have you considered contacting Star Link ? would be the perfect thing for up there and a great test bed for them :).

      @SailingVesselAdventurer  3 года назад

      Starlink will eventually be our solution I think. It will be a while before it happens though. We applied for service, but without an address or a permanent structure, our application was denied. Once the house gets started, we'll apply for it again.
