  • Major Mitchell's Cockatoos, also known as Leadbeater's Cockatoos, are stunning birds sought after for their striking appearance and engaging personalities, making them popular choices as pets among bird enthusiasts. Renowned for their vibrant pink and salmon-colored plumage, they captivate with their beauty and charm.
These cockatoos possess highly intelligent and social traits, thriving on interaction and companionship. They form strong bonds with their human caregivers and enjoy being part of the family dynamic. However, they require considerable attention and mental stimulation to prevent boredom and ensure their well-being.
With proper training and socialization, Major Mitchell's Cockatoos can become affectionate and playful companions. They are known for their vocal abilities, often mimicking sounds and even learning to speak simple words or phrases. Their spirited personalities and curious nature make for entertaining interactions, providing endless joy to their owners.
It's essential for prospective owners to understand the long-term commitment involved in caring for Major Mitchell's Cockatoos. They have a lifespan of up to 40 to 60 years, requiring dedicated care, a spacious living environment, and a balanced diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and pellets. Additionally, regular veterinary check-ups and mental stimulation are vital to ensure their happiness and well-being as cherished members of the family.

The first time I saw a Major Mitchell, I was blown away. To see photos is nothing like seeing one in real life. They are drop dead gorgeous.

Cockatoos seem to bond to the opposite sex easier.

Diva is gorgeous. I'm preparing for my first cockatoo next year, she will be a galah. That will be my final bird (so I say). I just rescued a cockatiel and I was not prepared for the dust!! But now I am (I hope)

    Is your Galah's beak OK?

Yes, just have to keep trimming. Vet says it happens and is "normal." So, we just maintain it. She can eat (and bite) just fine.

That wicker chair. Most of your birds chew on it. Doesn’t have lacquer or varnish on it? Isn’t it dangerous for them to chew on? My birds are always chewing on baskets and I try to make sure they don’t have paint or varnish on them.

The chair is plastic- yes, I watch baskets with any finish. 😊
