Remote Wilderness Cabin Build

- In 2014 I bought a remote mining claim deep in the Montana wilderness sight unseen. There is no road access to it so it could only be accessed by walking in. It is totally surrounded by forest service land. The seller had never been to the property! He had inherited it. It was mostly untouched since miners left it in the 30s. I could not bring my sawmill in so I built the cabin with minimal tools using the nice dead standing lodgepole trees that are abundant there. While building the cabin I found tools, artifacts and even buried treasure (ore) on the land!
If you want to build a cabin- see my website : logdovetailjig....

As a young man of 22 I built a log cabin on AZISCOHOS LAKE north western Maine, it took 4summers and a fall ,seeing what you've done brings a flood of good memories back, beautiful sights, beautiful animals, some amazing people. It was 24by26 with a loft and porch. The time was never wasted the feelings remain to the end of my time.Loons at night peepers in the spring shooting an occasional grouse while sitting in the outhouse, squirrel stealing a honey dip donut and walking proudly past my bed in the loft.Moose kicking my boat ,moose hooking an antlers through the outhouse. Ermine trying to take some partridge of the wood pile in the kitchen, then nailing bacon between my feet and having it run between my legs while sitting a the table drinking rum and cokes with a friend have fun I'm 71plu now Enjoy your life
I am 65 and just starting my 1st log cabin build. Thankfully i have a 45 year old son to help with heavy lifting. Wish me luck.
Glad you enjoyed it. Sounds like quite the place you had. Is the cabin still there?
Good for you Mark. Young at heart!
@@markhull7430 😁😁
What a beautiful place to have. Cabin and water, wood stove and lots of wood. And lots to keep busy with. What better could a person want. Hard work but just pace yourself. All the rewards in life are there.
I think a lot of us dream of doing this. I'm thankful to God that I was able to.
@@OnBeaverCreek Restore some of those log cabins..
Nice cabin! Wish is was young enough and strong enough to build a cabin like what you built. But, those days are long gone and all I can do now is “wish”. The mind set is there to do it, but the body isn’t willing to cooperate in my 87 year old frame.
Thank you sir. I have some other interesting videos planned so keep an eye out for those.
@@OnBeaverCreek what and how are you chinking cabin with?? Can you show your method of chinking please. I like how each log is not too scribed out...kinda over lapping on the corners and then I would use square pegs in round holes....The corners where logs come together look like it is a pioneer Style or other, but I do know that style is very old in other countries and they still have plenty of buildings standing and being used today.
@@OnBeaverCreek What do you call this style of which all logs are cut more equal...?? I love that look...
@@OnBeaverCreek Go ahead and use wood oil to stain and preserve the logs...over the yrs, you just brush more on in the summer every few yrs...should last 400 to 600 yrs just like the old cabins and houses in other countries...that they still live in today...😊😊😊
@@OnBeaverCreek if done right, all log cabins or buildings lasts for several hundred yrs no matter how there built...
You found some real treasures from the past. Beautiful build...
Thank you kindly
I've been a builder for many years and have seen quite a fair bit of sheds. The plans in ryan's package ruclips.net/user/postUgkxB7IXYxLzb_Ichhe45zM3Im5xfEiSp9vB have some of the nicest looking sheds i've seen in a while.
Howdy brother- I had to go back and watch this again. Absolutely gorgeous cabin! I’m trying real hard not to be jealous lol That country is beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing this. Take care and God bless y’all
Thanks 👍
Greetings from deep in the Idaho wilderness. I love this story. Looking forward to following your channel.
Welcome aboard!
That was a joy to watch. Now a lifetime ahead to enjoy your efforts.. To God be the glory!
What a wonderful build fellas you are very talented and what a great location too.❤😊
Looks idyllic. Beautiful cabin.
Cabin is beautiful!! I'm going to build one with sawn rectangle logs and then build one like this, love how you did the roof!! Awesome!!!
Go for it!
Beautiful country, wish I had the abillity to get something like this in the UK
Thanks. I would like to see the UK sometime.
I purchased a 45 acre property in an old isolated copper mining town in Nymagee, outback NSW, AUS. And there was an old remains of a miners hut that I renovated. And I decorated the hut with many of the old miners tools and equipment that was scattered around the property.
I've had my heart set on moving outback for a couple years now, anywhere but Queensland, hot enough on the damn coast! With folks bailing out of VIC and NSW by the truckload, hoping something similar won't cost me an arm and a leg. Guess we'll see
Very cool!
This is a slice of heaven. Good call!
Thanks!
Just found your channel. Love the cabin and the location especially all the history and hidden gems. I'm building a remote cabin too so all respect for what it takes to get materials to the site.
Have fun!
Awesome. I am doing the same only in Ak. This kind of life style is coming to an end. Enjoy it now. Great job.
Alaska! Get a Gopro and record lots of videos!
Beautiful cabin , BUT that forest looks like a 'Fire' just waiting on a spark !
You are right!
As a Californian, I thought that too. Why are so many of the trees dead, do you know?
Beautiful cabin!
Thank you!
awesome log cabin, it sure would be lots of fun searching the area for items of days gone by from mining, looks like you found some goodies
Yes and plenty more is out there I'm sure!
Beautiful cabin and nature. I bet you can make a lot of interesting findings there!!
Truly such a beautiful, wonderful place. You are truly blessed.
Hermosa obra.
Thanks for sharing ....a little piece of paradise.
Great job
Glad you like it!.
What a great property. It's going to be fun finding all the artifacts and history on your land. It's incredibly beautiful there and you did a great job filming! Liked the music, too. Looking forward to seeing your future projects. Have a great day!
Thanks! I have several more cabin builds planned.
Beautiful
Thanks!
Beautiful mountain side
Cabin turned out awesome
Love the wood stove and all the kool stuff you finding I would live there full time
Thanks 👍
You are so lucky to have the ability to live a dream like you are .. So beautiful to live in nature and have a lot cabin ... ☺
Thanks. It is a special place.
This is very insightful for me, last year I bought 37 acres about an hour south of Libby, MT (also an old mining claim from the 50's, deep in the mountains of the Kootenai National Forest) and will be embarking on a similar adventure this coming spring! Just found your channel and will need to check out the other videos. Thanks for sharing
Beautiful area and lots of nice timer up there! Consider documenting it on a youtube channel. I regret not starting sooner.
@@OnBeaverCreek I'll definitely be documenting the journey but not sure if I'll put it on my channel or not. If I do, I'll have to learn how to edit and produce a quality video verses the terribly long winded unedited ones I used to toss up. It would be awesome to share though. You come down your mountain with some meat?
Building a cabin in Washington. I'm still going to mine up on the east fork in the winter. Nice work with your cabin man. Cool history and artifacts around that area. I've been to Murray Idaho and had a beer and b on cheeseburger at the bedroom goldmine bar
Have to come over to Montana sometime. Joe gold
Nice to get away to the mountains
Wow, what a hum dinger of a cabin. Nice job.
Thanks 👍
Beautiful little cabin and a beautiful little home-place. The only problem I have with Montana...or anywhere out west, really...is the fire danger. All that country has a nasty tendency to burn over, and I'd hate to lose everything because of a stray bolt of lightning or a carelessly tossed cigarette butt. Where I'm from, in the Ozarks, we don't have that problem. Tornadoes...now, that's a whole different story!
That is a real concern for sure
What a chilling reality
Quality skills Nice Job 👌
Thanks 😁
Very nice.
Thank you
Nice cabin... getting ready to build a 20x20 just like this. Subbed!🪓👍
Awesome! Thank you!
Extremely tasteful video, and beautiful build.... thank you for sharing
una gran compra , siento envidia de todo lo que podrás explorar en tu terreno,, :) felicitaciones

Time to purchase a metal detector....Nice place and thanks for the video.
I do have one. It is a great place to use it for sure.
Nice cabin build in a beautiful location. Hope you and yours get many years of enjoyment from it.

Great job on the cabin and such a beautiful setting. I'm sure you will be spending many happy hours at your new retreat enjoying nature and the solitude. Thanks for sharing. Good luck and best wishes to you. :)
Thank you. I have a lot planned this year so keep an eye on the channel.
What a beautiful place you have

Gracias. Es un lugar tranquilo.
Impressive build! Mr. Proenneke would approve!
Thanks man!
Wow! Great job building the cabin.
🙂
Thanks! 😊
Beautiful place. I may be wrong, but those big X in trees mean Bigfoot is nearby. Your carrying on my dream for a place like this.
Great Job Enjoy
Thanks!
I'm over in the Bitterroot valley. Would love to come over and play with my White's metal detector!!
There are scores of old cabin ruins in these mountains to explore.
We are going to enjoy your channel my friend. Beautiful country you are on their.🙂
Good job, hope you find some gold there!
If the soil is fit for a garden I could quite easily live there. Montana, is a nice bit of country, close to my own home!!
This particular spot is not good for gardening. Summers are very short there.
Awesome place. I have made a camp in the woods of Maine as well. God Bless and Enjoy!
Nice! Do you make maple syrup up there in Maine?
@@OnBeaverCreek. Yes, they do make maple syrup. They make it at this time of year as well. I have seen a lot of trees being tapped as we speak. I do not do it though. At least not yet.
Very nice job, looks great. Now your ready for some bear stew!! I like the Mike Stinnett music too,its great!!
Thanks 👍
Q excelente se mira mejor la obra 👏👏

Thanks! 👍
Fantastic job, it looks great.
Thank you very much!
Nice cabin
Thanks 👍
GREAT vid!
Thanks!
Outstanding build Brother !! Peace 👍👍💪💪💪💪💪✌✌

Really cool cabin 👍

Nice work
Sweeeeeeet !!!!
You lucky bugger and I'm from new zealand I'm jealous heaps of backyard to play with
I hear New Zealand is pretty nice!
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
sorry i have to ask the obvious question that's a great little piece of land what did it cost around I know that your personal business but i am looking in the nest year to move out there somewhere Montana Idaho, I had 35 acres in Kentucky 20 years ago and should have never left but i did and I want to go back or somewhere else I'm live in and was born in NEPA right now. But land here is sold by 1/4 acres in most spots and even that is so expensive its unattainable. Plus we are bogged down by what you can do so much, b/c state wants to regulate everything, you can have cisterns or solar panels and the few game animals the seasons are so short its hard to get enough meat for the year. This is why I asked you sorry if it's too personal. But great video and happy you have a great place.
Hi Ron. Thanks for watching the video. These kind of mining claims (patented, 20 acre, non productive, lode claims with seasonal access) generally sell for 75 to 100 K recently but the prices seem to still be going up. I sold that one and bought another and have a video on it: ruclips.net/video/HLx67QzaPt4/видео.html
Qual esta música? Muito linda, se não me engano foi a mesma de uma homenagem q Jay Hammond fez a Dick Proenneke
Loved the video , such beautiful country, the views and the treasures are amazing.
Would the ore be worth anything now ? Maybe there's more stashed around your place , hope you find more interesting things that you can share .
Keep making these videos, I cant get enough .
Thanks. Will do!
Nice build! Why did you not insulate the floor at all? Seems to me those slim boards wont do much fot keeping away the cold.
True but the wood stove keeps it plenty warm and there is no shortage of firewood.
Wonderful Indonesia 🏖️🌅🇮🇩👍
cute cabin
Thanks!
Hi there, enjoyed your video, really nice cabin, at one point I thought you would go for a vegetal roof similar to Dick Proenneke cabin but a metal one is very nice too... keep the good work ... from a Canadian friend ...a Quebec friend to be precise ....: )
Merci
Theres gold in them hills!
I wish! Silver ore, hard to process. Fun to find though!
UU.

Great build . Just a tip the background repetative music was annoying . Better to talk over or' play natural nature sounds . 👍
Noted!
Beautiful cabin build. If you don't mind me asking how much does an old claim like that go for in Montana? I would love to move out there some day.
Right now there is very little land for sale but generally a 20 acre lode claim starts at about 50,000
Awesome , this is totally beautiful . Your cabin , the treasures, and the country are great . I would love to do something like that myself . Your very blessed to have friends that wanted to help you . The country is so beautiful and alive and to be a part of it is so rewarding . How long did it take to build the cabin ? Was it very cold at night ? Please keep the videos coming my new brother , from Trenton , Georgia thank you .
Thank you Ken. I worked about 20 weekends I guess. It was cold at night at times. The snow flies early there and gets up to 5 feet deep.
Vary nice love it
Thanks a lot 😊
Nice build cabin, but amazed bout the amount of dead wood surounding the area showed in the aerial photos. Close to 50% of the forest seems dead in the close area to the cabin. Is it because of the soil or some other reason?
Lots of beetle killed pine.
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
He is the only true refuge from the evil in this world.
Salam perkenalan
I hope you restore that old pick if possible.
I might. I would like to restore the ore bucket.
@@OnBeaverCreek would make for a fun video to watch.
Wow this is exactly what I need to build on my property. Did you have any floor plans or a good resource to reference?
Not for this style cabin but I have some free plans for a dovetail notched log cabin at logdovetailjig.com
@@OnBeaverCreek oh I was more curious about the corners.
You didnt have to dry the logs and take off the bark before building?
These logs were dead standing beetle-killed lodgepole pine. They were super dry already and the bark is very thin. The bark does not keep in bugs or moisture like you would expect from any other wood.
@@OnBeaverCreek oh that makes a lot of sense because I heard if they're not dry they will warp and the bark keeps moisture and bugs
What an adventure building your cabin in such a beautiful location! Any issues caused by your installed logs shrinking as they dry?
It sure was an adventure! No issues with shrinkage because the logs were beetle killed dead standing when I cut them. They were very dry.
With all that beetle kill, looks like my place above Butte!
Not far from there
How does a mining claim work? Do you have to pay a monthly/annual fee? Are there property taxes? Do you really own it?
Good topic for a future video. I will try to get it out in the next two weeks.
This is a beautiful cabin! I've been looking and looking on RUclips to find a "go by" to build the cabin I have pictured in my head and this one is it to a T! Thank you for uploading this! I just have two questions, how did you get the bigger logs on top for the roof supports? And would I have to use that big of logs?
Which I plan to probably make it a little bigger cause I hope to be able to put a kitchen in it. Especially if I'm lucky enough to find a spot close to a stream so I can get some running water. I would probably run my roof about as big as yours here but go about the same length out and be about double the length yours is. If I had to guess I'll need a support wall or at least something to half up my roof logs. If I do that, you think I could use some smaller logs than you have here? I'd probably add a little more to mine to help with it being more sturdy and stronger. My problem is, I'll probably be building this by myself or with my wife, so unless you had some setup to make it easier to get them up there, I'd say it'll be too hard with big logs like you used. Lol.
Handling larger logs is a challenge. Many cabins have been built with smaller logs. Just takes more logs and more time to notch. I chose this size cabin (12x12) so I could manage the logs. I used ropes, ramps and brute force to get the long logs up.
@@MarkRiley12 it honestly depends If you gonna have alot of snowfall where your building it. Snow adds alot of weight to a roof so if you are going to get alot of snow you'd want logs as large as this. If you don't get alot of snowfall you can go alot more light weight with you support joists.
