Here is advice. You wont see the height if you keep your eyes on the road. Do not look around, look straight ahead.
You have never ended driving off the side of the road have you? You still can drive but do not look at what might set you off.
I'm not afraid of heights. At least, not when I have a 50 feet wide hard slab of asphalt and cement and metal underneath me!
HOWEVER what she is living is relatable. Some bridges around here are super obsolete and cracked all over. Now, crossing such an old bridge I always feel the bridge will choose that exact moment to utterly and catastrophically break just like in the movies, thus plunging me in deep water. Now THAT I am afraid of, and I feel the anxiety popping up in my chest even with being only a passenger.
She was NOT putting other drivers in danger: Safely pulling over to the side of the road was the right thing to do. As for "on the phone with her children" part, she was PARKED, and clearly you know about "hands free" bluetooth phone calls, right? Or just letting the phone in speaker mode on the passager seat.
It's a fricking bridge that she will cross at slow speed in a straight line without any special maneovers needed (no intersections or red lights etc.)... Not a frigging speedrunning parcour challenge. Facing her fears in teps is the right thing to do.
People judge harshly way too easily. THRUST the policeman judgment here, he did the right evaluation and did the right thing.

Maybe she should not be driving. I understand she has anxiety but that is extremely troubling. Cudos to the officer for his patience and calming response to the situation
It’s a tricky one to say maybe she shouldn’t drive. She had the good sense to stop before the bridge, so posed no danger to other vehicles. It would only be a problem if a driver had a panic attack in a situation where avoiding action needed to be immediate and they froze.
I understand why you would say that, but not driving would only reinforce the idea that she couldn't or shouldn't drive, potentially leaving her isolated and incapacitated.
This experience may have been a first step in confronting and overcoming her fear and anxiety, and it gives her a positive success to build on. It may give her more confidence and less anxiety, overall, that extends into other areas of life beyond driving.
Since she didn’t even know how long the bridge was, I’m assuming she wasn’t from that area or else she was forced to detour to an area unfamiliar to her. Otherwise, she’d be used to using alternative routes to avoid that bridge. Many times you don’t realize you have a phobia until you’re presented with a situation you’ve never been in before. Once panic sets in, the determination it takes to go thru a situation rather than avoid it is monumental. His encouragement and promise to be right behind her the whole way was the right tactic. It not only got her off the side of the road but got her to overcome her fear. The fear is still there but now she knows she can work thru it. Her kids (that were on the phone) should now make it a point to ride with her over bridges at every opportunity. My dad wouldn’t let me avoid the Cooper River bridge in Charleston once he realized I never went to Mount Pleasant to visit family because of that horrible bridge (that’s when it was the original tiny, narrow…..can see it swaying if you stand back and look at it bridge). We went over that SOB 20 times one Saturday. I hated it but I never put off something I really wanted to do because of that fear ever again. His lesson was you need to know you CAN do it in case one day there is an emergency and you MUST do it. His answer wasn’t to take my license and not let me drive ever again. I’m still driving 40+ years later and I still don’t like bridges but I will cross them if necessary.
@@charmc4152 I understand your point but stopping as she did put numerous people in danger. Remaining there as long as she did seems extremely dangerous for her and everyone else traveling on that road/bridge. She needs to have her license suspended while she gets therapy for her anxiety
Anxiety can hit at any time without any warning. That could've been her first attack. Don't be so quick to judge.

I grew up going over the Baltimore Bridge that just collapsed Allll the time. It terrified me every single time. I am sooo afraid of heights. I would go so slow and it would really piss people off. It does not help my fear at all knowing the whole thing just collapsed. I can really relate to this woman's fear. I'm glad she was able to finally do it.
For the occasional comment here by those who really misjudged the situation, unless you have had a panic attack & experienced it’s paralysing fear please don’t make such hurtful comments. Kindness, patience & understanding in this moment of need was what helped this lovely lady have strength to drive through her fear. It only took the Officer a couple of moments to see the situation for what it was & made a choice that helped her.

My husband was a police officer for 35 years and I feel this would be the exact same way he would have handled something like this.

Oh I can soooo relate! Got stuck on Bixby Bridge in Big Sur CA during road construction. Was shaking like a leaf, and facing it did nothing to conquer my fear

The only things that scare the crap out of me is big bridges and tornadoes.
I have secret mini anxiety attacks over every big bridge I cross. I had four or five near misses. I was one of last few on the big bridge in Tampa that went down when a barge hit it in the 80's. I was laid over in Oakland, CA for four days at a holiday Inn across from world series games at Oakland A's stadium. I got loaded back east and the next morn I heard about the big earthquake that took down the 880 double deck bridge in Oakland. I was on the Atlanta bridge in 2017 as it was burning during rush hour jam. It fell 10 minutes after I crossed. The skinny two lane bridges in Cairo, Mo over the ohio rivers broke me. I call em the green dragon. I met another semi on it too. No errors but, when I hit land I fell apart like this sweet lady.
I will probably get a ticket on the east coast sometime for not obeying truck lane signs on bridges, I feel safer in the middle lane than the far edge. Thanks to the officer for being sweet and helping her cross that bridge. 🎉

I'm impressed with the officer's response, especially in light of all that we hear on the news, highly charged situations that conclude with terrible consequences.
The news does that specifically to demonize police and make the public fear them! There are way more great wonderful police officers than what the media chooses to poison your perception with!

Years ago, I would've been "get over it, lady". Having had an anxiety attack myself once and seeing my daughter go through one, I have a very different approach to them. If uv never had one, it's like having drank fifty cups of coffee and ur heart is racing a hundred miles an hour. God bless her!

This is how most cops act, as long as the driver isn't being a complete, uncooperative idiot.
I think more cops than we know are fantastic people and wonderful to their community. But the news doesn't show that the news just shows thugs and criminals who are cops. And that leads to an impression that we should be afraid of them. My son who does have anxiety but functions amazingly stop pulled over not long ago and he's 19. The cop ended up lying but he got off with a very low ticket. But they made him call his mom me and her call her a mom his girlfriend and I think he was very disappointed because I was like damn tell him to slow down and he's like he's the worst driver and I was like really cuz he's the best in the house and that's not a lie. And her mother just said Tell him to slow down. 😂😂😂 I think the thought that we were going to scream at the kids. So he just relented and gave him a small ticket and he was on his way. It was enough to scare him properly. But because of the constant terrible media some people who are already in a panic are going to panic about the police as well. My heart breaks for her I just want to give her a hug and hold her hand over the bridge even though I'm terrified too

I feel for her completely. I used to drive truck cross country for many years and was terrified of these bridges over large rivers. I don't drive anymore but I never got over that fear.
I drive big rigs across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and became scared of them. But it was mostly that one and The Frances Scott Key Bridge.
I believe both of you guys and there is nothing wrong with that type of feeling. It's not a phobia but more of a type of situational awareness. I used to be a climber cutter for my tree service also employed with other companies to take down problem trees in tight spots. 30 yrs of it. Have felt that piss chiver more than I can count.I totally understand.I could never be an Ice road trucker though.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland have individuals that will drive you across. This officer was wonderful.

@@SpclOps20She had a panic attack. She suddenly became parazyed with fear and her brain was telling her she's in danger. Most would turn around back home, she pulled over, the cop calmed her and she continued through.

Iv been there, out of nowhere suddenly terrified of driving over the bridge when I never had that fear before. This made me cry knowing her anxiety was so real. He was a good soul for being so kind! We need more people to show kindness!!
The only way to assist this lady was with kindness and respect. Well done to both the lady and gentleman police officer. She came out with the truth straight away. That enabled the police officer to make the right call.

I truly feel for her. I have panic attacks crossing tall bridges. The officer done a great job. Reassuring her that it's OK. Just needing confidence. It's a horrible feeling that's hard to over come. Trust in the Lord and pray while crossing. Praying helps me.

My heart goes out to her because I experienced this unknown fear of bridges when first started driving Class A Trucks but I didn’t have anyone to guide me over. I just had to suck it up and power through it. Driving in the middle lane so I couldn’t see the ocean below me LOL!!!
Now almost 40 years later, I drive over the bridges and want to see the water below. You just have to face your fears and tell yourself that everything is gonna be alright.

People are allowed to have fears and you don’t get to choose what you are afraid of.
I have fears of heights too but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be allowed to drive. Bet you wouldn’t want your rights taken away just because you have a fear of something.
She pulled over to the side when she got to the bridge , so she wouldn't be a danger to other drivers. She did the right thing. The officer talked her through it and even stayed behind her, which was very nice. Awesome job to the officer for his time and understanding!
