@BigBagOfPus Yep, both Martin and Taylor have some very quality instruments. And for those who think Taylors are too bright I always suggest the 514ce. It's not as boomy as a Martin but the Red Cedar really takes that bright edge off. I like it better than the 814 or the 914
Or they could be new elixirs. After a few uses, they'll smooth out. Also, the recording is pretty treble heavy (from a small mic I assume), so you're going to hear more high-end noise like fret squeaking.
514CE is Engelmann Spruce or Western Red Cedar (514ce). Back/Sides: Tropical Mahogany. 614CE is Sitka Spruce and Maple Sides and Back. 814CE is Sitka Spruce top with Rosewood back and sides. Woods do matter to tone. Playability is pretty much the same. Woods matter.
Look carefully on Ebay. I got one in perfect condition with the expression system (which is very good for recording and playing live) for $1600. New ones are 3K. Play it against any other guitar and you'll know why it's expensive.
@iStoleYourPC I use Elixir too and find them being absolutely the best buy. There are two kinds of Elixir. The polyweb is more smooth and reduce the squeeks. ;-)
Well, I'm thinking of getting this guitar or the 414ce... I don't how I'm going to decide, because in Portugal there are no high end guitars on stores, so we can't try them. What do you guys think? Is the 414ce a lot darker compared to the 614ce? Thanks
rub some lemon oil on them strings there and they'll stop the squeeking.. some people use that dry stuff (can't even think of it).. but without some kind of lube, new strings will squeek like that all day long and it's annoying when you're recording..
Not the kind of gigs we usually do. e.g. Bar Band. I would and have played in our church. I'm always very careful about the stray music stand or kid moving around. People don't realize that this thing costs 3$K. I take impecable care of my instruments and they are (The ones that don't make it to the bar) in prestine condition!!
It's nonsense to make statements like this. It's purely a matter of personal taste. Some people like the brightness of Taylor guitars and find Martin guitars too boomy. Other people love the Martin bottom end and find Taylors too bright. It's just a function of what you like as a player, and there's no right or wrong choice. So it's wrong to say they're overrated -- people who like them like them, and people who don't don't.
m simply right...coz m not brand crazy...taylor is just expensive...it lacks the depth in its tone...if u r a brand crazy thingy...then u can hate me for being frank....
taylor guitars are overrated...they r not bad...but they r definately not wht the company claims...they r just normal sounding acoustic guitars...if there is something special in it...then its the price....
yeh u r absolutely right!!!! some people just love to spend more n say they have got the best thing in the world...
i like the fret squeak sound tbh. adds character and flavour
I used to hate Taylors for that very reason, but when I played this model and up, I fell in love.

@6tryphon6
yeah, i think those are cheap strings... usually i buy elixirs and they sound great, last a long time, and has minimal squeeks... haha

@6tryphon6 i think it sounds good

if you want a brighter tone, go with the 614. darker tone, the 814.
@6tryphon6 probably from new strings
Hi!
Would you use this guitar at gigs as well as for recording?
Thanks!
Casey
@6tryphon6 why is it squeaking so much
is the 214 no good?
what strings you using on these?
It has the Fishman Blender. But the vid was recorded just using the video camera sound

that 'squeeeeeking' up and down the frets is quite annoying.
You didn't like the expressions system? Neither do I. Very nasaly sounding.
