  • Chris Walsh, Director of Global Policy at the George W. Bush Institute, shares his thoughts from the Copenhagen Democracy Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark. A panel session at the summit examined the 2024 Democracy Perception Index, a global survey that assesses perceptions of democracy around the world.
Chris discusses one of the key takeaways from the index: The favorability of the United States has sharply declined in the past year, while the favorability of China and Russia has risen.

Sensitivity is a faculty of perception and sensitivity preexists the event. As regards Africa if the United States's perception as defender of democracy is decline while the favorability of China and Russia has risen, it is not the fact of the United States. But the United States as a country of the Western world is affected by the perception that has been defiled by other from the Western world which haven't prepared the future.
For instance, consider the event in Niger where the Authorities have asked for a withdraw of French Army and after the U.S. Army. Consider that a few months later a French General called Francois Lecointre declares '“What is our common destiny, we French and Europeans, is the Mediterranean and Africa. We French have constantly tried to draw Europeans into this awareness of the need to act collectively in Africa. We cannot imagine that on our doorstep there is a continent that is sinking into the destruction of government apparatuses and states, sinking into a form of chaos and civil war. A continent that will experience a demographic explosion. To imagine that this will happen in the next 10 and 20 years and that will not have any consequences for Europe is simply unconscious. Europe will have the obligation to return to Africa and will decide to act as a political entity which will defend its interests, including by means of engaging its armies in 10 to 20 years'.
Is such words can be sustainable bridges between Africa and them?
These arrogance and contempt have prepared the ways for Russia and China and more largely to the so-called Global South. Any country that will rise of this Global South will likely benefit from the favorability. The challenge in long term isn't just China and Russia when it comes to Africa, but the leading countries of the Global South.
When it comes to Africa the U.S has interest to have a more distinctive approach. Otherwise, the legacy bult by others will defile its perception

Authoritarian and human rights are thrown again and again when talking about China and Russia. Any solid evidence of what human rights both of these countries have breached? What about the human rights of the Palestinian, do you care?
