No! Tomb Raider is about pushing boxes around a map to solve puzzles and hearing Lara say Oooh as you jump around. That's what I did for my entire childhood and it didn't do me no harm. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go push some boxes around my house...Oooh!
"An RPG system grafted onto a more liner adventure" this... this here perfectly sums up my thoughts on the new TR's, they tried way to hard to differentiate from Uncharted that they lose the simplicity that makes TR stand out from Uncharted
Thank you, the video was really helpful. It's nice to see a different perspective for once. You know, there was the trend in 2013 reviews "I've never liked Tomb Raider games until this one". And when you look at reviews for this one, you see people expect same things and talk mostly about them and them being not on the level they would've like.
There shoule be an option to import skills that have been learned from the previous game. I hate to see lara keep forgetting the skills she already learned.
5:49 Happy Trails, Hans! Good to see piranhas make a return (until they start annoying me at least). Not seen them since... What? Tomb Raider 3? 20 years!
What doesn't work? The climbing still sucks. How many times have I died because she didn't grab hold where she did before. Yesterday I got so mad I had to quit the game. I was in the cenote on deadly obsession. It took me over an hour to reach the end and there the game thought "Nah, let the mechanics fail". Climbed a wall with the crampon. Jump and press square to hook in overhead. But nope, jumped, pressed square, she did the right move but didn't hook in. And this problem is in ALL three games...
You know what's strange? I've never had problems with this in previous games, but idk, maybe because game haven't been patched or something but in this game I died more times than I did in previous once just because Lara wasn't been able to climb up texture/stuck in it.
I had the same problem but my controller was the problem... so none of the buttons worked as they should have... I had to do the tutorial 35 times before I bought a new controller and did everything first try...
People that complain like this are just bad at climbing, plain and simple. Maybe think before you jump next time and stop whining. Tomb Raider was always about learning how to reach the next platform, this days people would like the game to basically play itself...
There are definitely combat-shaped holes in the game. Even a week after finishing it, I still can't decide if there's a right amount of combat or too little. I've been having great fun replaying some of the stealth sections, but they're so short. I'd like more side missions that end in a stealth challenge, like Batman's predator rooms (or whatever they were called).
Rock Paper Shotgun exactly. The reveal trailer made me feel like Lara had to face all the killing but really she did more in the first four hours of rise then this whole game. Maybe it was cut to pad the get to 30 hours or it's for the Dlc
Loved this game but another thing that doesn't work is the almost complete absence of checkpoints on max difficulty. It's just disrespectful of the player's time.
@@raresmacovei8382 Yeah. Deadly obsession is much better for ng+ imo. When you know all the bits where you need to be extra careful and with all the skills unlocked, it's pretty much hard mode. But I died more number of times due to finicky platforming compared to hostiles. SotTR is still not that refined when it comes to platforming, surprisingly.
Great video! I heard however that the second half of the game becomes incredibly slow and the story doesnt really go anywhere. Were you left satisfied with the second half of the game? is the story pretty much on par with the mediocre story of the last two games?
I'd say the game maintains same pace throughout - the more traditional action scenes are in the second half of the game. As for story, it's a very similar deal to the last two games. Wouldn't say it was better or worse, but then I wasn't that invested or interested in it. I'm really just here for the tombs.
@@PotatoeSnow That's why, for me, this one works better than previous two - it scratches my tomb raiding itch. I just think it's funny that they have all these well tuned combat abilities and don't do much with them. But now I'm just repeating the video...
Every game is good or bad depending on what you like to play. I have all three of the newer TRs, 2013, 2015 and this 2018 TR. The first one had a somewhat steady combat mode with climbing and exploration and searching items thrown in. It was more linear and you really could not go off the path much compared to Rise and to a larger extent Shadow that had much larger areas to explore making it feel more open world. You couldn't buy ammo in TR2013 and TR2015 but you can in 2018 (considering the less combat mode, its interesting), and 2015 (Rise of the TR) was slightly longer than 2013 and to me less river of blood/zombie esque also. I like all 3 to be honest. I like Shadow the best however for the stunning visuals making it very enjoyable to see whats next and explore the tombs and side missions, etc. Shadow also has new game + allowing you to start with all your skills already acquired but, it doesn't help much. For Combat I like Rise TR best. For story I like 2013 best (very gripping story).
Good to see something a bit more in depth about what others are saying more details always good. I will be buying this but I'll wait a while for the dust to settle.
Something we are looking into - my PC can't handle 4K at the moment, but it is something we are looking into. Thank you for putting up with our inferior resolutions...
The only I did not like is half of the games is in practically total darkness, found it extremely frustrating in some parts, also how many times does Lara need to die...I don't like that we need to kill so many animals, wolves, jaguars, lama...really? Do I need to find so many puzzles were people that smart in the old days?
The way she traverses the ground is really off-putting, it's like she's skating on ice rather than actually walking on the ground. TR1 on PS1 held the finest moments for these games but they've gone down hill ever since. This looks a step in the right direction - the last game was such linear/arcade style junk.
shadow & 2013 tr are opposites in terms of storyline & gameplay. 2013’s storyline was great but the gameplay wasn’t the best. shadow’s gameplay is way better but the storyline isn’t satisfying at all!
they can give Lara more personality, she can talk more during the game, the animations while jumping are kind off some game interations , when she is finding artifacs or discovering new tombs or reading documents can be more realistic or engaging . but other than that the game is kind of fun
Don't do numbers. It's more of a collection of thoughts than out-and-out review. I liked it. It's a bit uneven, but I like the tombs, which I didn't in the last two. If you like tombs, you will like it too. If you prefer the combat, you will feel short changed.
But who want to play Laura in shadow of the tomb raider with that horrible looking dress when rock climbing and swing around etc and cant change it due to the way the game is so she has to fit in with the environment i hate it but not the game but the way they took it.
I normally play without AA but found that this makes for some very pixelated hair in my (many) photo mode screenshots. So TAA is here to stay, it seems.
My own sum up of Shadow is simply: I can't carry anymore.
impossible
ALL FULL UP, I CANT CARRY ANYMO! 😩
I agree about the collectibles. It was such a chore in Rise. it's tough being a completionist.
I'm glad I'm not a completionist, I'd probably go mad if I tried to collect *everything* in these games.
Come on, it wasn't bad at all, this was my favorite one to complete 100% out of all three of them...
@@PotatoeSnow what do you mean? I got all platinums from the reboot

Excellent end entertaining video. I've enjoyed all of RPS's videos, but I'd say this was the best (scripted and edited) so far... thanks!
I loved it but I feel like a combat and stealth section was cut from Piatiti and on the entrance to the city

Yep, but Crystal Dynamics handled the challenge tombs. It's why the game works for me - CD were always amazing tomb builders.
