- Hawaii (Hawaiian) Food Tier List: Ranking the Best Hawaii Food
There are a lot of iconic Hawaii foods that people love to eat. I wanted to create a Hawaii food tier list and rank the best foods in Hawaii. This list includes favorites, like acai bowl, saimin, shave ice, loco moco, poke bowls, and more. This tier list is based on my preferences. I'm sure some may disagree with where certain foods are ranked, but that's the fun of tier lists. I would like to know how other people would rank these Hawaii foods and why.

Poke should always be the top one 😂🥰
Yup!!
I live in California and poke is one of my favorite foods on the planet 🌎
Correct!
Poke ono .Aloha
Gotta have it often..otherwise..WITHDRAWAL🤐🤐
All the great tasting Hawaiian foods are listed below "S" and I gotta tell you that you're really missing out! Hawaiian born and raised!
So, this is a personal list, not a Hawai'i list. I disagreed with many of your selections and rankings. But, enjoyed your video.
For a local guy, some of these weren't explained very well. How do you not know what makes up lau lau, li hing mui, or pork hash/siu mai? And I'm not even going to get into 'is it shave ice or shaved ice?' and saying 'portuguese' and not 'podagee'.
I'm from guam , I love Lau , Lau , and Kaluha Pork and malasada all made in Guam by Hawaii native and others .😋🤙🏝
Yay! Planning to visit next year and am binge watching all your videos lol
Vananh Nguyen did you make it to Hawaii?
Just goes to shoyu that food preferences are definitely personal...Hurricane popcorn is one S and poke a D? U insane brah
Yes, I know. I'm just not a poke boy. I hear it all the time. :)
Hello From Hawaii U nutz uh?
The list doesnʻt make sense because you have single items compared to whole meal (plate lunch) and they shouldnʻt be weighted the same. I bet more locals would have poi, haupia and poke in one of the top two. Interesting choices you made.
The poi and poke is on my favorites. Grew up with it.
Laulau with the purple sweet potato is awesome
Enjoyed watching your video! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching
Poi is an acquired taste, it has to be started as a first food from baby. I use to make my own until all my children grew up and left my hale. It is my "go to" starch because I'm "home grown"!🙃
Love this!
This was great I laughed when you talked about Musubi you got those juices flowing and had to make a swallow. The 7/11 in Waianae has the best!
I don't know if this is a good thing, but the struggle you went through to rank all these incredible food options somehow made this my favorite of your videos I've seen so far. The music in the background was so happy too. Aloha!
Thanks. Yeah, it was fun. Lots of great food.
Poke, poi, haupia on the bottom?!? You just lost you Kamaina card!
:)
Malasadas is only OK? When I come home my first morning run is usually at Leonard's early (to beat the tourist line) or the mobile unit at Pearlridge. Need to stop at a Starbucks first though. I usually buy a dozen and by the time I get to where I'm staying like at my sister's house I've already eaten half of it.
I love poi so I usually pick up a bag when I get in but gotta watch how much I eat ... poi and rice will make me gain weight fast.
Beef teriyaki plate at any of the old/classic "drive -in" places. I'm not a fan of Zippy's or L&L. Good old places like Rainbow Drive-In and St. Louis Drive-in right across my alma mater are still around.
Manapua ... gotta some of those. There's a Chinese bakery in Manoa Valley that makes the best. My wife and I had an apartment across the street when I was going to the UH, and on some mornings I'd stop by the bakery to grab manapua for lunch.
Cracked seed is too salty and/or sour for me. In high school most of the guys in my class would buy squid or cuttlefish for our first class after lunch. The room would smell really bad. But it's still one of my favorite snacks.
The mix plate at Rainbows is ono! But I only ate there once and a while, trying to keep in shape. The fried rice and eggs with side podagee sausage was my favorite breakfast.
Best loco moco i had was from Forty Niners in Aiea. Shave Ice, Matsumotos in Haleiwa. Best Spam Musubi is my house. Lol
uncle clays or waiola is better than Matsumotos
Linguica is very similar to Portuguese sausage. Try dipping your Kalua Pig into the poi.
Again, solid video.
I appreciate that
acai bowl is brazilian food btw !
Acai is Asian. not brazilian okay think again you wish !!!! NYC
Antonio Almodovar Nonsense, almost all acai sold comes from Brazil.
Antonio Almodovar literally look it up dumbass
Antonio Almodovar, Although embraced by Hawaiians Açaí bowls are a traditional Brazilian food brought here. Like most “local” Hawaiian food is an influence from various immigrant cultures.
Why the anger? An easy Google search will answer the question.
Ever time I watch your videos about food I end up salivating & wanting to grind some Ono food. LOL
😁
I love your disclaimer because you knew the ranking would offend some.
Too bad spam isn't as cheap as it used to be. I love that you put Kalo chips on this list, so 'ono!
I love this channel. Thank you for sharing Very interesting food list. What is a Hawaiian breakfast and where would you suggest a tourist go for this dish?
Lots of local places to eat a local breakfast. Zippy's or Liliha Bakery are nice. Anywhere that serves SPAM, eggs and rice.
LOL good fun vid ... my list would be similar but then again not ... seems like it depends on your locale ... it seems that the small village type of community (I am from/on BI) has a different type of "taste" than from a "metro" type place ... I would definitely add Cone Sushi also, shoyu chicken, etc ... if you folks ever come Hilo, go to this bento lunch place named Kawamoto Store, right in Hilo town and everyone knows where ... there is also Koji's, these 2 got the real down home old school flavor ... thanks for the fun vid ...
Thanks for the Hilo recommendation. I love Cafe 100.
Going onto my list for vacation
Lots of good food in Hawaii. I would say to try a little of each. The seafood isn't for everyone, but there's always something here for everyone to like.
There are other places that eat lots of pork. St Louis, MO eats more pork chops than every other American city. There's also lots of pork butt being eaten in St. Louis. Something you don't often see in grocery store sale ads in other cities in the U S is "Sale on whole pork butts sliced into pork steaks and individually wrapped."
Hawaiian Number One local favorite Food is Lau , Lau , and kaluha Pork . 😋🤙🏝
I was in Honolulu last year & had fried egg plant. It’s one of my favorite dishes & it was the best!
Lorraine FreelyKirk was it cooked with eggs, like omelette?
E Asia Dr No, It had a dark sauce & some kind of shaved fish on top.
great stuff, 1 is missing Chili and Rice Hawaiian style its ssssssooo good.
Zippy's chili so good.
Been binging your videos and came across this one. If you love shave ice I have a specialty shave ice shop called HItalian Ice located at Aloha Tower Marketplace. If you ever do a review of your favorite shave ice, I’d like to throw my hat in the ring. We even do shave açaí ice too! Mahalo and keep up with the vids.
Thanks for letting me know. Didn't know about your shop. I'm sure we'll stop by one of these days.
When I first had collard greens I was amazed at how close it was to lau lau leaves. Use it for squid and chicken luau also.
Yeah, I was amazed at the similarities.
I kept waiting for plate lunches...a staple during our starving student days...
Too many plate lunches to list. :)
I love your videos. Maikai tanoshinde imasu.
Mahalo 🤙
Poke Bowls seems to have become popular on the mainland in the past 5 years
Yeah, but they aren't made with the same ingredients as in Hawaii.
I would agree. I imagine authenticity can be hard to replicate like in Hawaii since certain ingredients may not be available. It is also typical for food places to modify for local or regional preferences.
Awesome, a local RUclipsr!
Thanks. :)
The sugary stuff on top is called chantilly
Sugary stuff is more descriptive. Chantilly sounds naughty.
I miss eat brown chikara with tea&rice late at nite befo go sleep.
😉
Although I hate Li Hing Mui in general there is one use that is absolutely perfect, and that’s rimmed on the glass of a Lilikoi Margarita. Literal perfection.
Matt H Rookie! 😊✌️
I love to grill the fresh local fish including seared ahi. Mui ono! I have also grilled local farmed jumbo shrimp on Molokai and Kauai. The Islands also have an abundance of fresh tropical fruits. It is rare to find good ones on the Mainland. I like to shop at farmers markets and the organic farms.
A recent trend, at least on Kauai, is the more natural shave ice that uses real fruit juice instead of Koolaid type syrups.
Thanks for sharing. Lots of great local foods in Hawaii.
Loco Moko is my favorite. Rice, good hamburger patty, over easy eggs , grilled onions and brown gravy
Overrated.
😳 Leonard’s malasadas that low?! Are you lolo?! Love that stuff! I have a long list of “gotta have” when I go home to visit next month. It’s been over 2 years 😡🦠 (taro chips is on my list) 😝
🤣
Had a Manapua from 7-11 the other day out of desperation and it was REALLY good. Bad on me for the pre-judgement.
😆
Portuguese Sausage should be S tier. Nothing like it with eggs and rice.
And banana pancakes, ooooh soooo good. 🤙🏼❤️🤠
Even at McD's
Redondo's for lyfe!
I agree! Portuguese sausage with spam eggs and rice! I'm hungry now lol
Like your Chanel. Keep up the good work that you do.
Itʻs funny, informative and insightful. Good luck.
Thank you very much!
@@HelloFromHawaii Hey I am Hawaiian born and raised also. Some of the foods low on your list are also not favs. Had to eat it though because that is all there was.
Now I really donʻt like it, and most of that has put some Hawaiians in Dialysis. Funny huh?
I like your video's music.
Best LauLau - Youngs fish market kalihi Unless of course you know someone who makes ther own
Best Chicken Katsu - Graces.... They used to be all over but now only on Beretania I think
Best Siamin - Shiro's Waimalu
Best Shave Ice (or Ice shave for Hilo folks) - Anywhere... They're all good
Best malasada - Leonards of course
Best Poke Bowl - For fast and easy, the New Foodland is really good for just a plain poke bowl. Can suck 'em at the bar too now!
Best party food - Squid Luau.. any good party
Best Loco Moco - Cafe 100 Hilo
Best Manapua - Royal Kitchen Down town (still there?)
Best poi - not sure but gotta buy em early before run out
Best Acai bowl - What the heck?
Thanks for the rundown. :)
Of your entire list my favorites are the loco moco and spam musubi. I love ahi poke but the ahi has to be freshly caught. We used to eat it right on the gunwales of our boat. I actually enjoyed poi but I had to have lomi salmon with it; poi has such a bland taste but I love the texture. I was fortunate to have friends who lived on beachfront properties and we would absolutely grind on the weekends washing it down with beer.
Thanks for sharing!!
Great video homie! Feel like going to Hawaii right now. I've also heard that in Guam they have similar type of food!
calin acöstă Only the Spam and rice
Mainlanders staying at Local friend's house when they visit friend...
... giant plate of rice piled high, sprinkled profusely with black seaweed strips, and three fried-hard eggs on top, with a nice spiral of shoyu over it......
A glass of fresh squeeze lemonade with ice cubes......
Visiting friend:
"AWWW! OH!, dammmmnnn, this is SOOO *GOOD* !!!!!!!
Going to Kona Kitchen because you made me hungry...ordering Pork, Rice, and Cabbage.
Bruah, I nokea what school you went! 😳 I like know where you buy your shave ice?
I like Waiola and Shimazu's.
My favourite foods from Hawaii are Saimin, Kailua Pig, Portuguese Sausage (portagee Sausage), Haupia, Pork Hash (dumplings), Loco Moco, and fully stuffed Manapua!
😋 I adore loco moco. 😋
Hurricane Popcorn ain't half bad either, yummmm!
But, Chris, my least favourite food is SPAM. I do not like nuclear meat, which I call in-cog-meat-o, which is never neat-o!
SPAM, Cher and Cockroaches will outlive the next ice age.
I think most people would have Poke on top, I would, and although Ramen is really a Japanese influence, it’s so pervasive here and so good it really should have been mentioned. I like ramen way more than Saimin (although Shige’s burger and Saimin is so good) but I’m no local.
Honorary mentions:
Kahuku Shrimp
Dry Aku
Various pancake places (Haupia mac nut)
Ube (Filipino I know but the tarts are very Hawaiian)
Poi donuts (Kamehameha bakery)
Or any Poi Mochi
Meat Jun (Korean but Hawaiian invention)
Molokai Hot Bread
Smoke meat
Pickle Mango
Snow Puffy (Paalaa Kai bakery)
Strawberry Pie (Hawaiian for some reason)
Chicken Long Rice
Squid/Pork Luau (I admit, I haven’t had it)
Anything Lilikoi - Cheesecake or tarts
Mac Salad (It may be just a side but it’s with everything!)
And last but not least: *Pasteles!* (The Pastele Shop with stew!)
Thanks for adding your favorites in the comment. Lots of good choices. I do like ramen, but it's just not the same as in Japan. So ono!
Gotta say...the first time I tried spam musubi, not a fan. Then, I got brave and tried it again...and again...and again. It grew on me. It always tempts me when I go to my 7-11.
lol. 7-11 has one of the best.
Lau , Lau my favorite hawaii food and Second is kaluha Pork and loco moco . Malasada is my favorite donuts . 😋🥐👍
I left Hawaii in 1953. The food that they eat in Hawaii nowadays do not taste as good as the food.back in the Fifties. All the cooks died off and their kids didn't take over. In any case, I miss poi, pipikaula, lau lau w/butterfish in it, kulolo. kau yuk, Japanese BBQ on a stick just to name some at the top of my head. They had some tasty plate lunch sold from food trucks also.
Thanks for sharing. All good foods.
I agree with you but butterfish alone is really good too. Add fresh poke too. the fresh seafood in Hawaii is amazing.
@@theroadrunnerjarhead4109 Yeh, Young's Fish Market used to sell lau lau with only butterfish in it.
@@howellwong11 in the 70s and 80s I used to get laulaus at Mccully market on beretania and mccully st. They used to make them on saturdays. The laulaus were big with lot of pork and butterfish. They also had poi.
Talk about getting a shaveice machine. Pros and cons. I want to do that.
I used to have a shave ice machine. It was so nice to make whenever I wanted. The syrup was getting expensive, though.
These are all the tier choices that all my asian friends here in Hilo would choose. Like they eat poke but they say "i dont like the texture" but then there dads are like old school fisherman who make the best poke but they no like'm A'OLE!!. Thas ok MO FO ME! As we tell people when they like good pupus from my table i tell'm "SPOILED THE POKE" jus so they look the ada way!😂😂😂😂
The fried Saimin at Shiro's Saimin Haven is one of the best things I have ever eaten.
🤙
I agree with your entire list except, I would move everything from your D category to The S category. I would get rid of that crappy açai bowl which is not even a Hawaiian or even from the state of Hawaii dish. And I would put the Coco donuts and Terrell chips in the D list.
Nah Haupia is definitely D-list
How do you make shave ice at home??
I bought a machine
Can you recommend which machine and flavor syrups are good? I’d love to recreate this at home too!
Ox tail soup, Kal bee, boots and kimo's mac pancakes....I'm getting hungry.
Damn, y’all are salty over his favorite food lol let him eat in peace!
Aw man I wanted to cry when I saw haupia in D rank, but my Dad is the same lol
As a vegetarian I think food is Hawaii will be difficult. I can eat a dead fish once in a while. Thanks for the info!
I think there are some good options, but it would be tough at family potlucks.
Poi and Po'ke for me!
Caucasian Kamaaina here! Poi, Poi, Poi
Big Island-- J. Hara Store. Best musubi, hands down!
How now Lau Lau? How can pop corn, shave ice & taro chips beat Lau Lau and the other items listed A tier and below? Love all those things but really?
Nah I get it! Just a personal list. Thanks for another great video.
Yeah, I took some heat for putting poke so low, but it's my own personal preference. Lots of room for discussion.
Hello From Hawaii not gonna lie, that one hurt my feelings a little but everyone has their preferences.
Where is Bobs BBQ Kalbi? Shiros fried noodles? Taniokas sushi? Layered caramel rice cake? Gin dui sesame rice ball? Chow fun? This from Waipahu born and raised. LOL!
OK, I'm a year late on this response, but I only saw your video today. I can't argue with your list because it is your list and strictly a personal preference. But, a couple of your comments had me SMH. First off, kalua pig is not in the laulau. It is normally pork butt, I've never heard of kalua pig in a laulau. If I am wrong, someone please let me know. On the Portuguese sausage, it is known as linguisa or linguica on the mainland. I have tried it up here and none compare to any brand of Portuguese sausage from Hawaii.
I was born and raised in Honolulu, but moved to the mainland to go to school. Three of your 'S' items were not around when I lived there, Acai bowl, Hurricane Popcorn and Spam musubi. I have tried and like the latter two, but have never tried the Acai bowl. I'm curious, how did the Acai bowl become popular in Hawaii. I know it's from Brazil, but was just wondering.
Thanks for the comment.
I just tried a Brazilian acai bowl recently, in contrast to the Hawaiian acai bowl. It's kind of like a fruit smoothie with fruit on top. Whenever I eat one, it reminds me of a thicker Jamba Juice with more fruit. Pretty good, but not as ono as shave ice on a hot day.
Hello From Hawaii Acai is found in South and Central America. Almost all Acai sold comes from Brazil. It is enjoyed around the world, but it is hardly a Hawaiian fruit.
S poke bowl (especially any ahi & salmon mix) taro chips (hot from Hawaiian Chip Company)
A spam musubi loco moco
B manapua shave ice lau lau saimin malasada
C portuguese sausage hurricane popcorn coco puff kalua pork pork hash
D acai bowl haupia li hing mui poi
Yum, spam musubi with egg for breakfast and Li Hing Mui on pineapple.
Malasadas are my favorite
As a 90s kid born and raised in Hawaii, my child self would probably agree with his #1. That was my absolute favorite in the late 90s and early 2000s in Hilo side big island.
Now that I'm in another state though with homesickness starting to drown me in despair, I'd probably give it to spam musubi. the ironic thing is, because it was so common and always available, I neglected the fact it isn't easily accessible outside of Hawaii.
Truly I've learned the hard way.
Mahalo for sharing. Are there any Hawaii plate lunch places or Asian supermarkets near you?
Other than the scattered L&L on the mainland you have to find a restaurant that is run by locals to find spam Musubi. I find that I had to make it myself when I’m craving it and need comfort food.
I like the list although I don't agree with the ranking. For one thing, I think açaí bowl should be listed under 'T"...that is to say "tourist food", cause I only see tourists going crazy over it and not myself or my relatives.
lol. "T" tier. :)
What does "S" mean? I take it to be the top, but is it for "Supreme"?
I think it's like the grading system used in school.
Lau lau, ahi poke, poi; wor won ton mein, beef teriyaki, Portuguese sausage, oxtail soup, malasadas, sashimi, etc……….
Maunapua!!!!
Li hing Mui = Wah Mui! The ones in Maui were crazy salty...
Poke bowl and laulau is definitely top of the list. You missing smoke meat though. If you’re in Hawaii u need to eat smoke meat.
Malasada below coco puff? You got that wrong brah!!
Ok, yes I'm a local girl from Waimanalo but I've been transplanted to Virginia since my Hubby retired from the Army in '93. You are sooo right about the importance of certain food items for us Hawai'i locals who have relocated. Here is MY tier ranking based mostly on YOUR food choices.
First thing to do is eliminate a few of yours before I start, because I can’t judge what I haven’t tasted yet. Let’s take away acai bowl, hurricane popcorn, loco moco, taro chips, & whatever that thing is next to the letter B in your list. Now I’m ready to begin.
Absolutely #1 choice on my list has to be MANAPUA. Even my hau'ole Hubby loves this stuff. After many years of searching, kitchen-testing, & expert taste-testing, I have finally acquired an exceptionally good recipe & I can make 'em whenever I like, here in VA or anywhere. One problem though...very labor-intensive! Takes about 6 hrs. to make, start to finish, so not something I make all the time. In fact, last time I did was 2018 I think.
Next, SAIMIN. As you said, the taste is nothing like the Ramen we get here on the mainland…gotta have S&S Saimin complete with strips of Spam, chopped green onion, & a slice or 2 of the pretty pink & white fishcake which you never even mentioned (tsk, tsk). “Back in the day” I used to order this at the concession stand of Kailua Drive-in (bigscreen movie theater where you watch from your car…I hear no mo now). Went there on my 1st date. Even though it’s a meal by itself, & easy to make, I would put this at B.
The Shave Ice you described fairly good except that there’s a difference between Shave Ice in HI & a snow cone in the mainland. Shave Ice is exactly that…put a block of ice on the machine & a blade literally shaves it. I know this because my Mom owned a shave ice truck & me & Hubby would take it out for her sometimes. The mainland snow cones are chunky like the crushed ice you get from your fridge door. I would put this at C.
You have SPAM MUSUBI next…no need for more description…on my list it goes to level D because I’m not a fan of the wrapper.
These next 3 items is where you & I disagree A LOT! They are KALUA PIG, LAULAU, & POI. To separate poi from kalua pig & laulau would be like a PBJ without bread! The “trick” to enjoying poi is knowing HOW to eat it properly. So, what you supposed to do is take a bite of pig…WAIT! DON’T CHEW IT YET! … then add a bite of poi. NOW chew them together. Because poi is kind of bland, that is why the pig is salty & moist from the pig fat. By eating poi in tandem with the pig, that coarse Hawai’ian salt cooked into the meat now flavors them both. Same with eating laulau.
You said laulau reminds you of, what was it? Collard greens? I happen to have a recipe for this as well but I substitute with spinach. Seems to me collards would taste too bitter. Since laulau has multiple flavors going on in the same dish…greens + butterfish+ pork, all wrapped up into a package & steamed, eating poi with it just adds to the epicurean adventure. I REALLY hope you give poi another chance before you condemn it to the bottom forever. On my list, all 3 go beside the manapua at S level.
Gee, what luau would be complete without CHICKEN LONG RICE, right? So I’m adding it in place of 1 of my eliminations. Guess what? Yup! I have a recipe & I just made some for dinner a couple weeks ago. There are 2 special ingredients that make this dish unique. One is the distinct fresh ginger taste, & the other is the noodles. Locals call them cellophane noodles or glass noodles because when they are cooked they are transparent. They are made from Mung Beans & are exceptionally long when they come out of the pkg. I prefer to use a clean pair of kitchen scissors & cut them up before
serving just to make it easier to eat. I guess you could consider this Hawai’i’s answer to homemade chicken soup & to the best of my knowledge no one has ever commercially canned this as a ready-made for supermarkets. While this dish
IS a favorite of mine, I will place this one at A.
Next up is the PORK HASH, & the PORTAGEE SAUSAGE as it is referred to affectionately. You described them both well enough but I just don’t agree with your placement. What really stinks for me is that I cannot find anyplace nearby to purchase the sausage & it just HAS TO BE Gouveia-brand. I could probably order it online but can you imagine the S&H charge from HI to VA. Probably would need to be packed in a special container that could hold dry ice & then shipped over night express. Wow…that would be lots of ka’la! So as much as I would REALLY love to have the Gouveia sausage, eggs, & rice for breakfast, it’s going on the C level but only because of the expense. As for the pork hash, while I do enjoy how it tastes in HI, the taste is NOT the same here in VA even though it’s readily available. I’m afraid it would go on D level.
Now, about MALASADAS…again, your description was good, & I will leave it at level C for now, but I am planning to do a test run on a recipe I recently received & the results will determine if they stay or change position.
Moving on, we do not share opinions when it comes to HAUPIA…I happen to like coconut, especially in the form of this traditional favorite luau dessert. I’m moving haupia UP to level B.
For the last 2 remaining on your list…LI HING MUI, & POKE BOWL, we agree. Never cared much for the taste of LHM
& never did acquire a taste for raw fish either, so they will both remain on D level.
Besides making a beeline to the nearest manapua if I ever get to go back home at least for a visit, the next place I would go is Zippy’s Drive-in to get the TERIYAKI PLATE LUNCH! Yes, I can make it myself, but there’s just “something special” about those childhood memories, ya know what I mean? Gotta have the teri-plate w/2 scoop macaroni salad & 2 scoop rice!! This one goes right beside my beloved manapua.
Ok, I’ve taken one last look in case I want to do a little rearranging & I do. The KALUA PIG, LAULAU, & POI moves to A, & SHAVE ICE moves to B.
S MANAPUA… ZIPPY’S TERI-PLATE LUNCH
A CHICKEN LONG RICE…KALUA PIG…LAULAU…POI
B SAIMIN…HAUPIA… SHAVE ICE
C PORTAGEE SAUSAGE… MALASADAS
D SPAM MUSUBI… PORK HASH… LI HING MUI… POKE BOWL
So there you have it. Even though it took all night to complete, it was fun. Mahalo for letting me join in. Aloha, ya’ll!!
Thank you for your thoughtful response and list. Virginia is a long way from Hawaii. It's so interesting what Hawaii people miss. Manapua is something that we take for granted. I can walk down the street and buy some at 7-11 right now. :) Loco moco and hurricane popcorn are probably things you could make on the mainland. Glad to know that other people also don't find li hing mui and poke bowls that tasty. Felt like I was the only one when I was growing up.
Portuguese sausage, eggs and rice = S. 😁 I like ground beef, gravy and eggs but, not together.
I grew up on Okinawa till I was 6, and love island food. I’m half Okinawan and love love love noodles. Saimin is very good, but if you haven’t tried Okinawan soba, you need to. I usually go to Maui but, a couple years ago we ended up in Oahu for thanksgiving and found a little restaurant I think on the south east side of Oahu owned by an Okinawan/Hawaiian and they had Okinawan style soba. Get it.
Love your vids, keep them coming.
@@stanjohnson6299 I agree with your assessment of the Okinawan soba. I had it when I visited Okinawa in '06 and '16. I think the restaurant you're referring to is Sunrise Restaurant. The owners are from Okinawa and would talk to my mom and dad. Not sure where you live, but if you can find an Asian grocery store that carries Sun Noodle brand of Okinawan soba, you should try it. Their other noodles are very good, too.
Marvin Miyashiro , thank you, I will look for those noodles. I’m in Southern California, so I hope I can find them at one of the many Japanese stores over here.
@@stanjohnson6299you should have a whole lot of places to choose from. Not to mention that they also have one of their factories in your area.
An FYI, the guy that started Sun Noodle is from Japan and started the company in Hawaii. His wife is an Okinawan from Hawaii. Their kids are now involved in running the business. Also, they supply ramen restaurants all across the country.
711 should sponsor you 🤙
Okay, for coco puffs, at 2:45 you mention the bakery name-'Leia?'(sp.) 3 locations on Oahu. What is the spelling for the bakery? Aliea? Bakery.
Liliha Bakery
Liliha Bakery. They have a few locations.
No garlic shrimp or chicken Katsu?
where is Hawaiian bbq chicken?
Boots and kimo mac sauce on banana pancakes
#1 kalua pig
#2 Weke moana
#3 smelt caught with a hand net from the punalu'u river
#4 pipi kaula from Kaya's
#5 "pressure cooked peanuts" good yea?
#6 Some poke from Foodland's
#7 Some ramen from that place in Waiks their sign looks like one "no enter" symbol.
#8 Laulau!
#9 Something from the shrimp trucks
#10 probably the kim chee burger from St. Louis Drive In or something I dunno'
Thanks for sharing. Good list.
I'm eating right now - Arare.
Gotta get me a snow cone machine...spam and eggs ...
I bought a shave ice machine for the summer time. One of the best things I ever have in the house.
For me haupia is S tier.
I understand ABCD, but what does S mean?
S is the highest tier
I wonder if it's part of the school grades? I'd have thought A B C D F, which is odd anyway since we don't have E.
Monapua = known as Roast Pork Bun to the world..:)
Lenard’s malasadas
Poke in D tier is criminal.
😄
Ice shave brah, go Vikings! Spam on the mainland was poor people food. It came out in 1937 or so, and in WWII was a symbol of the U.S. we sent it to the USSR and they liked it a lot. It was served in the U.S. Army, and my Grandpa never served it in his house. It was always joked about, so became junk E-mail. I came to Hawaii and like it a lot. I like most kinds of local foods. I dine out a lot less living on my own now in a relatively luxuriant place.
Ice shave. Instant Big Island tell. :)
@@HelloFromHawaii I only lived there '93-4 and '99-00, but liked it and didn't really want to leave. Had bad TBI from motor smash near Waikoloa. Not good, loads of woulda coulda shoulda. I missed the place more before I moved to the country here. "A series of unplanned (by me) events.
Pork Hash = known as Siu Mai to the world!
Manapua = Pau
The Pork Hash at 7-11 especially good. Unless you are going to eat them shortly, ask for those refrigerated and steam them when its time to eat.. Chilli sauce not provided. Have the pork hash and manapua with sriracha chilli sauce (available in most supermarkets). Super for breakfast.
