  • We're back at Factotum Farms to help start the rammed earth process. Ray Clamons and I team up again to start getting the walls up. In here we go through some of the basic tools for starting a rammed earth project. We also pour the footers for the walls as well.
    It's an exciting time to get your hands dirty. Volunteer opportunities are available. Feel free to contact Ray Clamons on his website, or Instagram or Facebook. All those links are below.

    We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who decided to make the leap from living the city life to an off-grid homestead. We have no training in carpentry or electrical work. We've come armed only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
    Join us on our journey to move beyond a sustainable lifestyle into a regenerative one. We chose to live in the desert because we love the location and we wanted the challenge of bringing this desert landscape into productive abundance.

    Hey Jim n Jess, I've done a lot of dry pack flooring. I want to know what would happen if the dirt were mixed wetter like cement. Obviously longer to dry. Thanks for the vlog series. LYMI

    • @ourselfreliantlife
      @ourselfreliantlife  5 лет назад

      Sometimes that happens in a build. You probably wouldn't want the soil to be that wet. There is a delicate balance that needs to be achieved so that it can be compacted properly. Thanks fornasking Mack!

    I'm curious
    Since they are making
    Soil Cement, (8% =2.16 cu ft of cement per cu yard) for their Rammed Earth Walls..
    Why aren't they laying reinforcing steel in the walls like we do in concrete walls ???
    The only additional tool you would need would be...
    Like the square stomper he had made...
    An additional one with a hole in it to slide down the vertical rebars for close compaction

    • @ourselfreliantlife
      @ourselfreliantlife  5 лет назад

      I've never heard of reinforcing steel in earthen building. Even though there is cement in the mix, the strength of the walls come from the compaction. These walls can stand up to a lot.
      Thanks Jim!

    • @jimh712
      @jimh712 5 лет назад

      I ran heavy equipment for almost 40 years..
      Compact soil as hard as you want..
      I can still rip my way into it...
      Ad cement to it and a cat 140g with its blade can't touch it the next day...
      Rammed earth is interesting..
      Once on my homestead..
      I have several different ideas about it, i plan on playing with..
