- We're back at Factotum Farms to help start the rammed earth process. Ray Clamons and I team up again to start getting the walls up. In here we go through some of the basic tools for starting a rammed earth project. We also pour the footers for the walls as well.
It's an exciting time to get your hands dirty. Volunteer opportunities are available. Feel free to contact Ray Clamons on his website, or Instagram or Facebook. All those links are below.

We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who decided to make the leap from living the city life to an off-grid homestead. We have no training in carpentry or electrical work. We've come armed only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
Join us on our journey to move beyond a sustainable lifestyle into a regenerative one. We chose to live in the desert because we love the location and we wanted the challenge of bringing this desert landscape into productive abundance.

What a cool opportunity to learn something like that. Of course, knowledge is power.
Absolutely! Spreading the knowledge of such an excellent building technique is what we're here for.😀
That’s pretty cool. Let’s play with some rammed earth walls.
Take care guys.
Lol! Grown men playing with dirt, not a bad way to live.😆

A little bit of tools and a whole lot of physical labor. I just love the way those walls look, they are beautiful. Good upload bud, very informative. Thanks.
Can't wait to see the walls!
Thank you! These builds are definitely labor intensive, but they're durable and cheap.
Thanks so much for stopping by!🙏

Awesome! I was just talking about this method the other day to a friend!
Really!? That's cool. Earthen building is a great way to go. Cheap and super durable. Thanks Dominic.

I am really looking for to watching the build. Thanks for sharing. We purchased 5 acres North of you and are looking forward to moving back to AZ in a couple of years. Plan to build with adobe and clay slip.
That sounds very exciting Sandra, congratulations! I can't wait to get more of this build out there.😀
That's really cool. Hadn't seen how that process works before.
Yes! Rammed earth is a great building technique. Stay tuned because it gets better from here.😀
I agree what a great opportunity!!!
I love the earth building so beautiful.
Rammed earth is really unique among other earthen building tech because the raw earth is exposed. It can be a beautiful sight.
Very interesting. You are so fortunate to have very helpful and knowledgable people near you!
We're trying our best to help out over at Factotum farms. Get them set up a bit. Thanks Lisa!
So Interesting! Love the process, so much knowledge, loved it, xoxoxo
Thanks Lori!!🙏
Your buddy has a cool place but what’s going with your place is why I’m a fan of the Green Dream. Rainy season is coming before you know it,,,,,??,,,,, hope your feeling better today.
Thanks Rick! It's true, but I can't pass up the opportunity to help out the neighbors. Besides, maybe they can help me later.😀
Green Dream Project I agree with helping others. But a this rate you are going to miss collecting this year’s monsoons and an entire season of gardening. Setting you back considerably. ??? He should be helping you get ready for the monsoons not the other way around.
Brown soil ared soil yeaaaaa 8% cement in them wowwwwww, great job guys. Well done. God richly bless you all💖🌿💖🌿💖🌿💖🌿💖🌿💖💖
Thanks Evelyn!🙏

Thank you! We're fond of earthen building as well.😀
Really cool video Mr Jim, rammed earth technique is a lost art IMO!!! Good share sir!!! Dan
Thanks Dan! You're right about the rammed earth. Hopefully these techniques make a comeback. 😀
Cool project to be a part of. Looking forward to part 2. Have a good one guys.
Thanks so much Jay!🙏
Cant wait to see this come along. Y'all will be learning a lot!
Absolutely! Learning to work with the soil will be key to our builds.
A lot of people do not vibe their concrete for some reason. That is one key process of getting the right mixture and preventing any honeycombing. Y'all didn't use rebar or rebar mesh? That is a very long project y'all have going.
stay blessed
Actually I didn't know about vibrating the concrete until that day. We did put a couple of pieces of rebar in each footer.
Thanks Sidney!!
@@ourselfreliantlife awesome. Anytime Jim. Stay blessed
Hey Jim n Jess, I've done a lot of dry pack flooring. I want to know what would happen if the dirt were mixed wetter like cement. Obviously longer to dry. Thanks for the vlog series. LYMI
Sometimes that happens in a build. You probably wouldn't want the soil to be that wet. There is a delicate balance that needs to be achieved so that it can be compacted properly. Thanks fornasking Mack!
✋🏼👊🏼😃❤️ Love the volunteer work to help you learn. I’m looking forward to seeing these videos. Thank you Jim.
Thanks Jace! Definitely helps build good Karma!😀👍
Nice video this Grammie is learning something thank you..☮️✌️❤️
Awesome! Thanks Brenda!
Wish I was closer, that is my kinda jam!! Love helping out and learning something from someone that knows what they are doing. I'll be following along with interest:))
Thanks Ryan! This should be an exciting build.😀
Fascinating stuff - I am going to be checking in for the full build :-)
Thanks Woody! Earthen building is a passion of ours.😀
If only I lived closer
That would be cool Rali! We would have loved to have you.
great Info Jim, all those picks and shovels I see more digging holes in your future, lol Wish I was closer, i would love to help
Thanks Joey! It should be a fun time.😀
Hello Jim and Jessica , very nice channel and great upload . Full watch and enjoy. Thank You for sharing .Big like for your very interesting channel .
One more red button pushed! I hope to see you again soon returning the friendship too. Have a great day:)
Thank you so much!!🙏
He is the rammed earth Professor
That he is!😀
Great video Jim! Are you going to use rammed earth at your homestead?
Actually no, but we'll be utilizing a cousin of rammed earth, earth bag! That's cool as well.😀
Thanks Paul!
I'm curious
Since they are making
Soil Cement, (8% =2.16 cu ft of cement per cu yard) for their Rammed Earth Walls..
Why aren't they laying reinforcing steel in the walls like we do in concrete walls ???
The only additional tool you would need would be...
Like the square stomper he had made...
An additional one with a hole in it to slide down the vertical rebars for close compaction
I've never heard of reinforcing steel in earthen building. Even though there is cement in the mix, the strength of the walls come from the compaction. These walls can stand up to a lot.
Thanks Jim!
I ran heavy equipment for almost 40 years..
Compact soil as hard as you want..
I can still rip my way into it...
Ad cement to it and a cat 140g with its blade can't touch it the next day...
Rammed earth is interesting..
Once on my homestead..
I have several different ideas about it, i plan on playing with..
This is all so interesting! Great info! Looking forward to the rest of this series! And did you say Coat Cheese county?
Lol! Now I wish I did! It's Cochise county. 😆
Thanks Amber!🙏
@@ourselfreliantlife lol too funny!
Can i get basic course on rammed earth
Check out Ray's website at naturalbuildingworks.com
Can i use any soil
There are ratios to look for in soil. Especially with rammed earth it's good to have low clay content.
Very interesting stuff Jim. Good to see you're finally getting paid your value 😎😎😎😎. Just kidding you're worth much less LOL.
Nice and interesting dear new friend here support each other
Anyone doing this in southern Arizona?
