Telling Time in Italian

- When visiting Italy, you'll probably want to keep a tight schedule, as there's so much to see and eat! You may have to ask someone what time it is or ask what time something is going to happen, and of course you'll have to understand their response, so let's learn how to tell time in Italian, both generally by time of day, and also the exact time.

Ore- hours
Che ora e'/Che ore sono?- What time is it?
E' l'una- It's one o'clock (singular)
Sono le due- It's two o'clock (plural)
Sono le quattro- It's four o'clock (plural)
Sono le otto- It's eight o'clock (plural)
Any number when telling the time that isn't one o'clock needs to be in plural
Sono le tre, precise- It's precisely three o'clock
Sono le tre in punto- It's three on the dot
Sono le diciasette e venticinque- It's 17:25/5:25 pm
Sono le dieci e un quarto- It's 10:15/It's ten and a quarter
Sono le dieci e tre quarti- It's ten and three quarters
Sono le unidici meno un quarto- It's a quarter to eleven
Sono le dieci un mezzo- It's ten and a half/10:30
Sono le dieci e dieci- It's ten and ten/10:10
Sono dieci alle undici- It's ten to eleven
Day in the Life of Franco
Alle sei mi alzo- At six o'clock I wake up
Alle sei e un quarto faccio la doccia- At 6:15 I take a shower
Alle sette faccio colazione- At seven I have breakfast
Alle otto esco di casa- At eight I leave the house
Alle nove ho lezione di matematica- At nine I have maths class
A mezzogiorno faccio il pranzo- At 12:00 I have lunch
Alle due di pomeriggio prendo un altro caffe- At two in the afternoon I have another coffee
Alle cinque di sera incontro gli amici- At five in the evening I meet my friends
Alle nove e mezzo faccio cena- At 9:30 I have dinner
Finalmente, alle undici, vado a letto- Finally, at eleven, I go to bed
Quattro di pomeriggio- four in the afternoon

thanks! My gf is italian and she and her whole family say that they don't do the rounding up and then minus whatever minutes are left. They were all laughing when I told them that I learned this from two different videos. They just say the number for the minutes and that's all there is to it. What is your take on this?
Nah I've heard Italians do it. But either way is totally fine.

why do we use the verb "sono" when asking about the time?
i presume you found out, but for others: sono is the present tense 3rd person plural form of essere (to be) or, in short, sono is 'they are'. this is because there are multiple hours if it's 2 o'clock (or higher). it will seem strange because in english we say the TIME IS, but in italian we're asking what the HOURS ARE - we're counting the hours.
