  • @PolskaHerobrine
    @PolskaHerobrine 4 года назад +39

    After Zero Hour there is still the classical Overwatch 1 Trailer and also "The Plan" which was actually recommended in the top right here: 12:36
    I'm not sure how to classify The Plan as it does not seem to be an actual "cinematic" because it uses in-game graphics, but still, it's a fun short original vid worth watching.
    There are also all of the Origin Stories, since they are rather short, lasting 1-2 minutes, it's a good idea to watch multiple in one sitting, there are 14 of them in total, but if you want to just pick out the best ones and leave out the others, my recommendation is to watch Sigma's and Doomfist's stories, Sombra's is good too, and Soldier 76 has the most lore in it.

    • @varkthas6468
      @varkthas6468 4 года назад +2

      Bump this. Would highly recommend watching the origin shorts (since you seem to be at least a little interested in the history and lore). Furthermore, there are a couple other videos to watch that were released with the events. Most notably is the Retribution video, which details the event that caused the downfall of overwatch (and has genji in it from Dragons so there’s that to look forward to).

    I have cried twice during game cinematics. Once for Baldric in Honour and Glory and in this one when Snowball sacrifices his battery. (I may have forgotten that he's battery powered and therefore rechargable.) The creators of these cinematics really know how to play my heartstrings.

  • @Elanchana
    @Elanchana 4 года назад +1

    I've seen people make fun of how sad Mei gets when Snowball sacrifices its battery power. "It's a robot, you can recharge it" etc. But really, with Mei *already* having lost her entire team and the OW comms being broken, Snowball is the closest she can even get to companionship. And in the middle of the Antarctic night, there's no way to get solar power like at the end of the episode. So losing Snowball, even for a few hours, is a huge punch in the gut for her.

    The big issue with this cinematic is that after seeing her backstory like this, her gameplay makes her look like a psychopath.
    Her closest friends died frozen in cryo chambers, she had to work all alone for a time with only a glorified tamagochi as company. She is years out of her time and the world has suddenly turned to an unstable mess on the verge of another global war.
    And then ingame you see her cheerfully spray other people with her cryo weapon, slowly and painfully freezing them solid - to then make an ice pun and shoot an icicle through their head. All while her victims are still conscious.
    I know it wasn't their intention, but it makes it look like she cracked from that experience.

    Mei was previously designated as a "defense" hero, with the other categories being "attack", "support" and "tank", but now she is a "damage" hero (attack and defense got combined. Her skillset is freezing people, shooting icicles at people, building ice walls to temporarily create new terrain, "cryostasis" where she turns invulnerable and heals a bit and her ult is throwing snowball and then snowball creates a large blizzard which freezes and damages people.

    I really forgot how dark this cinematic was, especially for the least experienced character out of the roster (i think). Despite how much of a monster she is in game

    it takes anywhere between 6-12 years for a body to fully decompose, and thats just in the dirt. Mei most likely had to see her friends rotting faces and she's still one of the most joyful characters in overwatch

    I think another thing worth mentioning is that the moment where Mei says "Thanks Snowball, at least I still have you" was so intentionally put there to make us sad later when Snowball uses its battery.
    It's kinda like when in movies you have protagonists have romantic sex, you know something bad is gonna happen to either of them later on.
    And the scene with the northern lights, I think it really gets across Overwatch's message of "a world worth fighting for"

    The Overwatch bases are called different things depending on what section they are under. Most of them are peacekeeping- and omnic monitoring-oriented and they are called Watchpoints.
    The science-oriented ones are called Ecopoints.

    While "the Plan" uses ingame assets rather than pre-rendered assets like the "real" cinematics, it might be fun to watch anyway.
    It's a blatant and loving homage to Looney Tunes (which the director of the short Terran Gregory is a big fan of) and it could be interesting to compare and contrast the cartoon filmmaking techniques as opposed to RL film-making techniques and how they work when applied to CGI animation - and if there's something you can learn/apply when doing RL filmmaking.
    I think Roger Rabbit and Cool World are the most prominent examples that has used cartoon film techniques with real actors, but I'm sure there are other examples as well.

    Less action, but you really made me see how the different layers of framing, effects and sound are used to heighten the emotional impact of the key moments and also pointed out the use of rapid cuts to show the passage of time.

    The mugs at the end are an offering. She's not offering flowers to the deceased. She doesn't have any. But she can give them a touch of warmth before she goes. Also, Mei is a climatologist, which is why I think she has the green on her patch. She's originally part of Overwatch's climate initiative.

    Just wanted to mention something about the ray of light comment about 34 minutes in - after you talked about that, the Moria chamber with Balin's sarcophagus in Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring came to mind, since there was a light shining on the sarcophagus there. Almost as cool of a detail as the cave troll.

    I think I mentioned it in the previous Overwatch video, but now that you mention knowing about the original Overwatch release video I thought I'd mention it again.
    Consider doing them both at the same time (the intros to Overwatch 1 and Overwatch 2). They are quite long, 6+8min if I recall, but the first sets up the universe as the audience first would get to know it (plus it is really funny and cute) while the second somewhat assumes an already established knowledge of the world and the heroes. From a storybuilding aspect it would be interesting to see your reasoning in regards to character setups, introductions etc.
    It is also a fair few years between them (OW1 was in 2014 if I recall) and OW2 just last year. Almost 6 years between. A lot of technological advancement in CGI, computer power (to even render more advanced frames) and moviemaking in general!
    It would be interesting to see you analyze them each on their own but also the differences between them, anything you could attribute to technological advancements but also storybuilding differences (as you mentioned, a lot of disposition in this video. Did they have more of that in their earlier OW-intro compared to the later? Less character focus or more general action? From a more small-scale combat to big, badass hollywood-style battles?).
    I'm not sure if there is some Copyright-issues preventing you but, at least consider it please =)
