She initially thought Kirito was a girl because of his avatar, like others. And after some thinking, he rolled with it anyways instead of being honest, because he thought that way she would help him through the basics of the game. Also because he thought she wouldn't help him because he's a guy, especially when most players here are men. He didn't say anything like that, but it's hinted that way. Sorry about the comment, it's just to bring more context. Also that avatar was not Kirito's choice.
