I'm a Catholic, but this is interesting to learn about. One of the largest churches in my area is the Church of the Nazarene, and I know one or two people who go there. They also operate a preschool that even some non-members send their kids to, including some parishioners at my Church.
Yea, churches of Christ deny salvation by faith alone and think you have to be water baptized by their minister to be saved. That's kind of cultic if you ask me. My grandmother was in it for awhile. Said it was a total cult.
You mentioned deacons and elders. In my experience, the term deacon refers to very different things in different denominations (Episcopal and Presbyterian, for instance. I imagine othr churches may use the word in other ways. Could you do a video on the different functions of deacons in different churches (or, from another angle but same idea) the history of deacons and the idea of deacons?
Elders are people who have a calling to preach in the nazarene Deacons are those who are called to ministry and do not have a calling to preach Just how the Nazarene Denomination creates a difference between the two

@@rawtheran9319 Church split was the primary reason, but also because friends of my parents who also left that church invited us to go with them to the A/G. We visited, loved it, and shortly thereafter were baptized in the Holy Spirit 🕊️ and started ministering there. My parents were Sunday school teachers, my father was a Gideon, and I ministered in music (piano/voice). When our church pianist left, I became church pianist and filled that roll for over 20 years, until my husband and I moved away. We witnessed our friends being healed (with medical documentation to back it up) and lives transformed through the power of the Spirit. 🕊️ The Nazarene church was dead in comparison, & now that church we left has closed its doors for good. They were of the “us 4 no more” mentality, so the closing came as no surprise to me.
It was originally called "The Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene", but when the tongues became associated with the term, they dropped it. They pre-date the tongues movement, and were in the same vein as the groups that started the tongues movement.
Grew up Pentecostal, but left the church for the Nazarene. I believe in tongues but let me tell you, from first hand experience, there are a lot of fakers in the Pentecostal church. Unfortunately
The church across the streer from my house is Church of the Nazarene. My neighbor who used to attend there, told me it's Pentecostal as he himself is a Pentecostal. Long story short, the church has suffered from shrinking attendance that now they have to rent out to Baptist service.
One minor correction. The Church of the Nazarene IS pentecostal in the broad sense of classical pentecostalism. The original name of the denomination was The Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene. but was later changed because Pentecostalism had come to be associated with tongue speaking, which the Nazarene's do not practice.
Yes, Pentecostalism changed meaning, but so too did "Classical Pentecostalism". So you should definitely not say that Nazarenes hold to that either. Both terms refer to affirming speaking in tongues, and Classical Pentecostal means they affirm that the initial evidence of spirit baptism is speaking in tongues. In a sense of identifying denominations, the original meaning of Pentecostal has now been rebranded to "holiness", and so it's not really worth a correction. Today, the CoTN is not Pentecostal in any denominational sense. That meaning has moved on. Every denomination on earth of course can claim to be "Pentecostal" in some sense, because they all would believe that what happened on the day of Pentecost was a legitimate thing.

One of the reasons I don't want to become orthodox although one day I might have to. 9 Recently, I was talking with a reverend on the internet. He said, "The Bible says we have been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets. It is not said upon Kacou Philippe". And he was telling me, "Take the Bible, let’s not get out of the Bible …" And I said okay but from which book of the Old Testament does Paul himself extract Ephesians 2:20? The Bible has always been talking of the law and the prophets! Take each Word of the Lord Jesus and you can see that it is always said, "The law and the prophets or Moses and the prophets". It was not said anywhere that faith had to rest upon the foundation of the Apostles and prophets.
I don't know what Dobson himself believes in his heart, but in order to be ordained all Nazarene pastors need to affirm that they have experienced entire sanctification and trust me, the ones I know (and I know quite a few) are not claiming to be without sin when they do that. If you ask them whether or not they could ever still sin, they will tell you yes without hesitation (thought I'm sure with sorrow). Entire sanctification means something different to them than what you are describing. A friend described it to me this way: your average chair might not be somehow the perfect flawless prototype of a chair, but if it functions to hold you while you sit on it, then it is at least entirely fulfilling its function. Entire sanctification could be thought of as being in the very center of God's will - doing what he wants you to do, growing as he wants you to grow, functioning as he wants you to function, etc. I'm oversimplifying but that is the general gist. Yes, we Nazarenes are somewhat optimistic, I suppose. When God commands us to be holy because he is holy, we believe what he commands can actually come about.
@@norahajian8517 entire sanctification is a Wesleyan thing and the Nazarene are Wesleyan Holiness in their soteriology so I wouldn’t be shocked if they believed it. I don’t know what it entirely is from the explanation of a Wesleyan describing it, but I would consider both the Wesley brothers as Christian.

I should have made it more clear that I was responding to the guy claiming that someone who attests to having been entirely sanctified is claiming to be perfect and totally sinless already. I think that's an unfortunate misunderstanding of the doctrine of entire sanctification. Just wanted to set the record straight. Yes, the CotN is Wesleyan and has that Holiness movement heritage. As a church, we tend to put a lot of our effort and resources into children's ministries, missions, what we call 'compassionate ministries', and scholasticism :)

I had someone who said they were a Nazarene saying that he rejects Paul and his epistles. Is that true? I had just not heard of that before and never knew anything about the Nazarene Church so I was confused.

We have Board members that are voted in by the congregation at large, we have Elders which are members of the church which have dedicated their lives to the work of the church,( Spreading the gospel to every corner of the world.) and who the church has honored with this title, the churches main focus is the great commission and so missionary work is very important to us.
This is incorrect. Directly from the Church of the Nazarene manual: Index: deacon MANUAL 2013-2017 500 The Church of the Nazarene recognizes all believers are called to minister to all people. We also recognize Christ calls some men and women to a specific and public ministry. As our Lord chose and ordained His 12 apostles He still calls and sends ministers. The church, illuminated by the Holy Spirit, recognizes God calls individuals to a lifetime of ministry. When the church discovers a divine call, the church should recognize, endorse, and assist the candidate’s entry into ministry. 531 A deacon is a minister whose call of God to Christian ministry, gifts, and usefulness have been demonstrated and enhanced by proper training and experience, who has been separated to the service of Christ by a vote of a district assembly and by the solemn act of ordination, and who has been invested to perform certain functions of Christian ministry. 531.1 The deacon does not witness to a specific call to preach. The church recognizes, on the basis of Scripture and experience, that God calls individuals to lifetime ministry who do not witness to such a specific call, and believes that individuals so called to such ministries should be recognized and confirmed by the church and should meet requirements, and be granted responsibilities, established by the church. This is a permanent order of ministry. 531.2 The deacon must meet the requirements of the order for education, exhibit the appropriate gifts and graces, and be recognized and confirmed by the church. Technically we have deacons, but in all the Nazarene churches I am familiar with, the word is never actually heard in practice. Maybe at an ordination service you would hear it. All ordained pastors in the Church of the Nazarene are either Elders or Deacons: an Elder if their call to ministry will involve a significant amount of preaching, and a Deacon if their call to ministry will mainly be focused on the various non-preaching aspects of ministry. Seriously, though, in the churches I grew up in we just call everyone pastor (or maybe reverend, more rarely).
I grew up in the Church of the Nazarene: From cape Town to Port Elizabeth - with Pastor Cupido. When I was 7 years old, I felt a presence in the Church - something I will never forget. Filled with Holiness beyond what any language can describe. A while later, someone prayed over my failing legs and they have been healed ever since... Eventually, in time - I started questioning and rejecting the bible. I studied religion - mainly christianity's origins and islam, from the quran to the 9 volumes of Sahih al Bukhari's hadiths. I want to prove everyone wrong - that there was no GOD. I studied science, dabbled in archeology and mocked and jeered any Christian along the way... Then it happened... HE showed up. As much as I was trying to rejecting HIM, HE pursued me even more! Grace, Love, Hope, Freedom, Peace and Mercy beyond describable. Today, I am HIS - I belong to HIM. I accepted someone as filthy and tarnished and sinful as me. I will always be grateful and have a soft spot for the Nazarene Church. Though I no longer attend the church (can't find one anywhere), I draw from the memories and love the church has shown me many years ago... And no - I don't speak in tongues. To my knowledge - based on Acts - it describes languages understandable by others... If it happens, The Lord will allow it. Until then, I will not fake it - The Lord sees and knows everything. HE was 100% with me and I will pursue forever being 100% with HIM.
I was curious what they were, since the name has always been somewhat of an outlier. It certainly doesn't indicate they take after Methodist or Wesley.
3rd generation Nazarene here.... We are similar to the Methodist Church but are separate. We are the largest Wesleyan Holiness denomination. It could be said that we are a "sister" denomination to the Wesleyan Church, Church of God (Anderson), Wesleyan Methodist, Churches of Christ in Christian Union, Free Methodist and the Salvation Army.
The impetus for the forming of CoTN came when Phineas Bresee, a Methodist pastor in Los Angeles, left the itinerate ministry ranks to work with a rescue mission for the homeless. After a rift occurred between Bresee and other leaders at the mission, he formed an independent church to continue ministering to poor families in LA. From that home base, Bresee planted other congregations in the US. Those congregations, along with other small holiness confederations, allied to create the present-day Church of the Nazarene. Their focus is on Wesley's teaching on "being made perfect in love", which they call "entire sanctification". In that respect and in a core value of ministry to the poor, that is where they are Wesleyan. To a degree, they are probably closer to the Salvation Army than the United Methodists.
What do you mean, "The Bible is inerrant in things necessary for salvation". What about the words of Jesus that do not concern salvation, and what about the remainder of the Word of God? I have been attending a Nazarene Church for some time, and this little sidestep was never mentioned before! "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly equipped for all good works." (2 Timothy 3:16-17) I need to reconsider the Nazarene Church.

Somehow I thought there'd be a more clear focus to this particular denomination, but it seems to be all over the place on a number of key issues, so just as confused as all the others claiming to be the winning ticket to salvation or whatever.
i've heard the perspective that marriage is a covenant, not a sacrament, and that those 2 things are exclusive of each other. this was from a Lutheran however
We don’t call our pastors father, we don’t have nuns, we don’t put Mary and Joseph high up there (but we do believe they are still very important), we used to be strict with what we wear like no jewelry, no hats, women could only wear skirts, women couldn’t cut their hair, and that’s pretty much what I remember
We tend towards Arminian theology and we have the doctrine of Entire Sanctification, which contrary to popular rumor does *not* mean being sinless and somehow no longer needing God's continuing grace. More along the lines of 'doing exactly what God wants us to be doing at the moment'. Don't take my word for it though, you can read up about it :) I only have a layperson's understanding of the concept.

You see? 20 John, that is the Church, followed that angel; angel means messenger. God had sent him a messenger and at a given time of the ministry of that angel, when John saw how profound the Message of the angel contained in the book was…You see? The Angel said to him as in Matthew 25:6: behold the Bridegroom, the Word ... These are the true Words of God! And the angel said to him: See you do it not, I am not Jesus! I am your fellow-bondman, and the fellow-bondman of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus, that is to say Christians!
3 And yet, the greatest sin in the desert is to discover water and to hide that from people. Spread this Message so that those to whom It is destined can receive It. We are not seeking to turn some crabs into fish or some wild asses into lambs of God but we have the obligation to warn them without exception. Even if they call that "judgment", do it! It is an overstatement to say Nazarenes 'reject' speaking in tongues: more to the point we reject that it is necessary as proof of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. And we definitely don't go out of our way to encourage people to speak in tongues during church services - it would be pretty extraordinary for that to happen in a Nazarene church. People would be nervous and confused (and maybe skeptical as well), as it would be unfamiliar and unexpected. But it would not necessarily be rejected out of hand.
1 I take my text this morning from Revelation 14:6-10. I read: "And I saw another angel flying in mid-heaven, having the everlasting glad tidings to announce to those settled on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people, saying with a loud voice: fear God and give Him glory, for the hour of his judgment has come; and do homage to Him who has made Heaven and the earth and the sea and fountains of waters. And another, a second angel, followed, saying: Great Babylon has fallen, has fallen, which of the wine of the fury of her fornication has made all nations drink. And another, a third, angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any one do homage to the beast and its image, and receive a mark upon his forehead or upon his hand, he also shall drink of the wine of the fury of God prepared unmixed in the cup of his wrath, and he shall be tormented in fire and brimstone before the holy angels and before the Lamb." ... 2 Well. The entire earth constantly prays for an awakening. And given the importance of such a request, God will answer. But the awakening comes only by the Word of restoration. The Jews were expecting an awakening but according to their taste. 3 Now let’s come back to verse 6. Where does the angel of verse 6 come from? This angel comes from the deposit of the Word that is in the Heaven according to Psalm 119:89 and not in the Bible. The Word of God comes from Heaven through an angel while the word of the devil comes from the abyss through pastoral school. This angel comes from the temple, from the model of the Church which is in Heaven and not in the book of Acts of the Apostles, in the Vatican or in the United States. God revealed It to Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel and to all the prophets. [Kc.3v1-3] [Kc.57v8] 4 Paul and the Apostles saw this model in the Heaven and laid its foundation on earth. 1 Corinthians 3:10-11 and Ephesians 2:20 clearly show that. Now, where is therefore the foundation of all these churches, the missions and ministries that we see on the whole face of the earth? Know that these Catholic, Protestant, evangelical, and Branhamist churches rise from the abyss and go to perdition. Death and the dwelling place of the dead accompany them. They search for supports and foundations here and there in the Bible on such and such thing but know that they rise from the abyss and go to perdition. [Ed: The congregation says: “Amen!”]. [Kc.3v1-3] [Kc.57v5-8]
You should really cover the conservative holiness movement. Denominations include the ICHA, Pilgrim Holiness, and Bible Holiness. The Nazarenes, according to the CHM, is liberal and there is some bad blood between them.
I don't believe in forfeiting salvation. That kind of thing reminds me of my own childhood growing up as one of jehovah's witnesses. I definitely believe in once saved, always saved. What kind of loving Creator and Savior would reject someone for having doubts or just finding a different spiritual path that works better for the individual? I just can't get behind it
So you believe in once saved always saved and yet you think God is happy if you ditch him to follow spiritual paths? 🤯 blows my mind. I for one know my mind would not be assured of heaven if i lived like that. Just my opinion not an attack. Im glad you are assured of your salvation. Its not for anyone to judge. Thats between you and God.
A belief that someone can forfeit salvation or backslide does not entail rejecting someone for having doubts. I don't know any Nazarenes who would attest that God cannot handle our doubts. That bit about the 'different spiritual path' is 'right out' however, to quote Monty Python. God redeems us and conforms us to Christlikeness, in his will. He helps us 'put to death' the former self of sin, which is often what the general philosophy of "follow your heart, be true to yourself" is trying to sadly and tragically cling on to. You've got to choose: your way or God's way. The broad gate or the narrow gate. If you choose the narrow gate, you will inevitably change - a lot. That change is God's redemptive work being done in you. The Church of the Nazarene tends towards Arminianism rather than Calvinism, so we typically believe that free will and choice are at play throughout our entire lives. It follows that, yes, although there could never be a good reason for it and although it would always be the wrong choice to make, people can choose to turn their back on God after they have come to know him. I would expect God's prevenient grace to still be reaching out to such a person, though, always offering them a way back, always calling for them to come home and be reconciled like the prodigal son.
It’s funny because the gifts of the spirit are right there in the Bible and Nazarene believe in none of them occurring today which in and of itself is denying the Holy Spirit. What is impossible for humans is possible with God.

Friends, first of all, Nazarenes don't reject speaking in tongues out of hand, we just reject the idea that it is necessary, and we don't put a big emphasis on it. Second...the New Testament says some other stuff about speaking in tongues as well, specifically that it is not paramount. And I would say that we do believe in the gifts the spirit. Speaking as a Nazarene myself :)
Would love a video on “prophetic words”. There’s a church in my area where the pastor invites people on stage and “prophesies” to the church goers on their future. Seems heretical but what do I know
There defo is some charlatans out there but I can confirm that the Holy Spirit really does still move through giving people visions, dreams, words of knowledge, etc. I've had authentic Pastors receive a word from the Holy Spirit about my life before and it has turned out to be 100% accurate.
A close readingof I COr 13 confirms that prophecy etc should stil be going on. after all do those who reject such actually know as they are known, face to face? or are they like th rest of us, through a glass dimly? read the whole chapter of I Cor 13 and go on over to chapte r14 for St paul never wrote with chapter and verse divisions BUT the temptation to presumption is very powerful and i have as of yet (after 44 years a christian ) never met a true prophet of God even though i was reached through a couple of stunning prophecies in my old church which read my mind from across the room by means of a total stranger (I do distinguish the ministry of prophet from someone who gets the occasional true word of prophecy from the Holy Spirit
there is a two-fold meaning to the term. I agree with others: I see zero context in scripture that says prophesies ended. In fact, Paul says some have the gift of prophesy. HOWEVER, saying "God gave me a revelation that I should divorce my wife and marry this younger woman" does not pass the smell test. Yes, that did happen, and no, those and other "personal gain" prophesies were not what it meant then or now.

@@Lukegriz77 from my limited but lifetime experience, it seems that the beginning of pretty much any 'movement' had sound theological education and experience among the founders, and as it propagates, there is a steady decline in the level of knowledge among the clergy as the movement expands. The original "Pentecostal" context was 'the move of the Holy Spirit" much like Pentecost in Acts Ch. 2. And I can understand that desire. But as that movement spread without the root knowledge, the gifts themselves became the focus instead of the seeking of the Spirit. Somewhere along the way, the focus became an emotional experience INSTEAD of a heart change, not in addition to. At some point, the "showmanship" took over and those who at times are more like Simon the magician in Acts than Simon Peter ended up performing instead of preaching. I mentioned the change in the Church of the Nazarene-I got there after the fundamentalism had died down, and I would posit that a big part of that was the education system the Church of the Nazarene developed. As knowledge expanded, legalism degreased. The focus became less and less on external actions and more on heart change that results in spiritual maturity. Can that go too far? Yes, many mainline denominations demonstrate that. But overall, there needs to be a balance between the two.

Being a Nazarene means you are in a dying church who believes in works as part of your salvation.....I know ....I grew up in one. Didn't make much sense then and it makes no sense as an adult. Observing the members in their daily life and you wondered if any of them were "trying to turn from their sins".....I can tell you that quite a few could not turn away from the buffet and we all know what the bible says about gluttons.....and this is just one example......just didn't see a whole lot of effort on the part of some to turn away from those sins. So you always wonder where is the drawing line for God.....did you turn away enough? How torturous it must be to go through life not knowing that you are absolutely saved and going to your just rewards. And it blows my mind that these people cannot read Romans and figure it out.....maybe they are reading something other than the KJV and most of the verses that have been deleted or changed have to do with salvation....big shocker.....so many verses telling you your works are fruitless when it comes to entering the kingdom.....yet they don't see.....probably because they are not saved and the unsaved cannot discern scripture.....luckily I escaped that nonsense.

I was born in the Nazarene church grew up Nazarene in South Africa under the teaching of Reverend Zurcker I moved away from the church they don't belief in the demonstration of the Holy Spirit the speaking in tongues etc I always felt being in the church that something was missing so when we as a group started to belief in the demonstration of God's power we were asked to leave the church and we did ...that was the best move ever😅

If you're talking about "Glossa" (speaking in a comprehensive language, as described very clearly in Acts 2) then don't mind reading the rest of my commentary and forgive me. The pastor was very wrong according to your testimony. He should've explained to you about "speaking in tongues" and treated you with love. The way you presented looks like he "ban hammered" you of a sudden and for no reason. I'm from a baptist church, from Brazil, and so glad to have a pastor that will listen to my doubts and try to help, that cares about the sheeps. I love him so much. Even if (hipotetically speaking) he was a bad pastor and wanted to instant cut me off the church, for whatever reasons, it would require an approval of the members of the church. That's one of the reasons I like the baptist churchs around here, they are democratic. Anyways, i'm sad you got cut off, and worse... for such a little thing. Instead he should've clarified your doubt in the class of sunday school or personally. Me and my pastor, we talked for hours about speaking in tongues, it's such a complicated topic but the Bible is very clear about it. I think any follower of Christ that has access to the Bible can pray for elucidation and read what is written, I think even my father who doesn't know how to read can understand what's written in the book of Acts chapter 2. I suppose you have the habit of reading the Bible and praying everyday, so read Acts and 1 Corinthians for yourself without the glasses of denominations, study about it and try to understand as a whole (not isolated verses). I am a Nazarene, I love my church,I use to attend a pentecostal church but i hate speaking in tongues, there is no meaning in speaking in tongues,and i follow many pastor's in pentecostal church but they speaking in tongues but when they come outside the church they live different, they cosiping to much and lie to much, speaking in tongues is not the full power of the holy spirit

Nazarenes do believe in the gifts of the spirit and do not take the position some protestants do that apostolic gifts stopped in the first generation of the church. We just do not believe in tongues the same way Pentacostals and other charismatic churches do. Our articles of faith explicitly mention divine healing still takes place and when I grew up missionaries would tell of divine healings, prophecies, casting out of demons, and miraculous communication with people of different languages (tongues). We do not, however, practice tongues as a "prayer language" that everyone should seek to adopt. From our manual "To affirm that even a special or any alleged physical evidence, or “prayer language,” is evidence of the baptism with the Spirit is contrary to the biblical and historic position of the Church. Krishna, the holiest man in Hinduism, was a sexual pervert. When he was a child, he used to hide and watch his mother bath. And it is written in the Puranas of Hinduism that one day, while a group of young girls were bathing naked in a river, Krishna hid to watch them and then stole their clothes and went up a tree and agreed to give them back their clothes only if each of them came to him naked and begged for his mercy. You Hinduists, to which paradise will you go with such a man? And also, if you leave Hinduism because of Krishna's actions to go into another religion, it's like changing prison cells. You Indians, Chinese and Japanese; you Asians, when you become Christians, you are no closer to God than when you were in your religions. No religion is better than the other and all religions lead to the same Satan.
I don't know any Nazarenes who believe they are in a state of sinless perfection, including the many pastors I know (who need to attest that they have been entirely sanctified as a prerequisite for ordination). Entire Sanctification does not mean what some people think it means. And yes, that verse mandating us to "be holy, because I am holy" comes to mind. Our theology is hopeful and optimistic: we trust God and believe that when he commands something, it is possible. We take him at his word. We believe he is always at work in us. We believe he will see his plan for us through. We believe that by his grace and with his help, we can in fact do his will, that he calls us to do.

Sounds like a private equity rolling wrap up of small town conservative Christians. You can get a transfusion. You can't have a drink. You can get a female minister but she won't officiate at your gay wedding. Pretty much down the middle of the fairway. the thing about "holiness" churches is that holiness very soon, if not at the outset, degenerates into legalist hypocrisy which is the only outcome when hoiness is seen as RULES rather than a living relationship that they have forsaken for the rules of course the opposite error is to confuse grace with licentiousness and themiddle error is to thinkl that these two, law and grace can be balanced. THEY CAN NOT SO EVERYOE IS WRONG on this matter and my error is of the extreme legalist type if serious striving to keep the law of God were holiness Jesus would NEVER have rebuked the pharisees as hypocrites, for they were the closest to Him as regards basic doctrine
The Nazarene was a sect of Jewish-Christains during the 1st-4th centuries even St. Jerome spoken about them. They however are not part of the Church like many earlier sects by rejecting certain dogmatic truths were regarded by the Orthodoxy Christians as apostates to the faith. The Ebonite sect and Nazarene sect denied the Divinity of Jesus as God. Both sects regarded Jesus as a Man and revered Him as a prophet. The only real notable difference that the Ebonites rejected the virgin birth of Jesus believed that He was the child of Joseph and Mary. The early Christians during the 1st century were called Nazarene that is until St. Peter established the Church of Antioch and they began to call themselves Christians instead. The Christians never denied that Jesus was God even back when they were the Nazarene. The Nazarene was split between Christians and other sects like the Nazarene sect. It's a poor choice to use the word for a Christian Protestant denomination. The Nazarene sect rejected the teachings of St. Paul and Christians regarded them as Judaizers.

The Ebonite sect was closer to Judaism than to Christianity in fact they considered themselves as Jews. Christians in Antioch didn’t call themselves “Christian.” They were followers of “The Way” in Antioch to make fun of the followers of the way people started to call them little Christs or Christians. One, noticed it’s The Church of “the Nazarene” - Jesus was of Nazareth and Nathaniel asked can anything good come from Nazareth? Yes, our Lord. Well, we know that all prophet messengers received their Message from Heaven and let’s see now this Message of verses 6 and 7. This is the very first Message that says to the African for example to worship the true God who made the sky: the stars, the sun, the moon and even the fallen angels who use horoscopes, mystical orders and religions. God has never been in a religion. True Christianity is not a religion but a life. This angel calls on Haitians and Beninese to quit voodoo, fetishism, customs and any other forms of worships and invocations... God has created land for our life and we must not transform it into sacred forests or groves, into statues and masks to worship it. That was the Message of the first angel. And this first angel, it is Apostle Paul. The sea and springs of water were not created to be worshipped but it is God that we must worship; it is God who is the creator. So, it is the believer's choice to be saved? We have power that Christ doesn't have since He cannot hold us in His hand? We can snatch ourselves out of His hand, though Jesus said we cannot? So, when Christ died on the cross, it wasn't enough for us to be fully forgiven? We have to have a second experience to be fully free from sin? So when we die without this second experience we will die for our sin nature? So, it's okay to believe in evolution, though that denies the creation facts that God has given us and it has been disproven scientifically? These things make this a cult.
We're not a cult, entire sanctification is not about being 'saved again' or being perfect as yet, of course we believe God is sovereign (and we don't believe the concept of free will is at odds with that), many of us (the majority of us?) do not believe in macroevolution or in an old earth, yes of course we believe Christ's sacrifice is sufficient, of course we hold that the Bible is of paramount importance, no of course we don't think we have greater power than Christ does, yes of course we believe that without God's prevenient grace none of us could be saved (we just tend to believe he offers salvation to everyone. Yes, it is a paradox that God could want something ("Repent and live!" he says in Ezekiel) and not immediately make it come to pass with his omnipotent power (which we do not dispute he has, just like we do not dispute that God is sovereign). He does stuff we don't understand sometimes. It is a paradox we are okay with and at peace about. The Bible is full of paradoxes (why would God ever feel grief, unless he was for some reason choosing to feel grief that he ultimately does not *need* to feel, given that he is complete and perfect in and of himself). We trust God even while we continue to see through a mirror darkly down here. Once again, for those in the back...we are not a cult. Save that kind of label for Jehovah's Witnesses, or the LDS, or the Unitarians. We have no idolized personality that we worship. And in point of fact we value and believe God and truth and the Scriptures above the whims and philosophies that come and go within the cultures and societies of this fallen world. I would say that the Nazarene church is a Pentecostal church. The women's dress code is pretty much the same as other Pentecostals -- long denim shirts and plain blouse. Long hair styled into a bun in the back. No makeup. The dress code is different in most suburban areas.
Hey Jack this might have been true of the Church of the Nazarene back in the 1930's and 40's but the Church doesn't have a strict dress code anymore. There are plenty of churches on our districts that lean more contemporary and if you were to walk into the church you would see plenty of people wearing casual clothes and maybe even the Pastor preaching in denim. There are also lots of women who wear makeup and have different hairstyles as well. Thankfully the denomination is not as legalistic as it used to be

The Church of the Nazarene is not and has never been a "Pentecostal" church. When the COTN was organized the original name was the Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene. The word "Pentecostal" was dropped when charismatic churches began to flourish. The style of dress for women as you described, pretty much ended in the 1960s. While there may be some that continue to dress that way would be an exception.

I'm a Catholic, but this is interesting to learn about. One of the largest churches in my area is the Church of the Nazarene, and I know one or two people who go there. They also operate a preschool that even some non-members send their kids to, including some parishioners at my Church.

You mentioned deacons and elders. In my experience, the term deacon refers to very different things in different denominations (Episcopal and Presbyterian, for instance. I imagine othr churches may use the word in other ways. Could you do a video on the different functions of deacons in different churches (or, from another angle but same idea) the history of deacons and the idea of deacons?

We visited, loved it, and shortly thereafter were baptized in the Holy Spirit 🕊️ and started ministering there. My parents were Sunday school teachers, my father was a Gideon, and I ministered in music (piano/voice). When our church pianist left, I became church pianist and filled that roll for over 20 years, until my husband and I moved away. We witnessed our friends being healed (with medical documentation to back it up) and lives transformed through the power of the Spirit. 🕊️ The Nazarene church was dead in comparison, & now that church we left has closed its doors for good. They were of the “us 4 no more” mentality, so the closing came as no surprise to me.

It was originally called "The Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene", but when the tongues became associated with the term, they dropped it. They pre-date the tongues movement, and were in the same vein as the groups that started the tongues movement.

The church across the streer from my house is Church of the Nazarene. My neighbor who used to attend there, told me it's Pentecostal as he himself is a Pentecostal. Long story short, the church has suffered from shrinking attendance that now they have to rent out to Baptist service.

One minor correction. The Church of the Nazarene IS pentecostal in the broad sense of classical pentecostalism. The original name of the denomination was The Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene. but was later changed because Pentecostalism had come to be associated with tongue speaking, which the Nazarene's do not practice.
Yes, Pentecostalism changed meaning, but so too did "Classical Pentecostalism". So you should definitely not say that Nazarenes hold to that either. Both terms refer to affirming speaking in tongues, and Classical Pentecostal means they affirm that the initial evidence of spirit baptism is speaking in tongues. In a sense of identifying denominations, the original meaning of Pentecostal has now been rebranded to "holiness", and so it's not really worth a correction.
Today, the CoTN is not Pentecostal in any denominational sense. That meaning has moved on. Every denomination on earth of course can claim to be "Pentecostal" in some sense, because they all would believe that what happened on the day of Pentecost was a legitimate thing.

I don't know what Dobson himself believes in his heart, but in order to be ordained all Nazarene pastors need to affirm that they have experienced entire sanctification and trust me, the ones I know (and I know quite a few) are not claiming to be without sin when they do that. If you ask them whether or not they could ever still sin, they will tell you yes without hesitation (thought I'm sure with sorrow). Entire sanctification means something different to them than what you are describing. A friend described it to me this way: your average chair might not be somehow the perfect flawless prototype of a chair, but if it functions to hold you while you sit on it, then it is at least entirely fulfilling its function. Entire sanctification could be thought of as being in the very center of God's will - doing what he wants you to do, growing as he wants you to grow, functioning as he wants you to function, etc. I'm oversimplifying but that is the general gist. Yes, we Nazarenes are somewhat optimistic, I suppose. When God commands us to be holy because he is holy, we believe what he commands can actually come about.
@@norahajian8517 entire sanctification is a Wesleyan thing and the Nazarene are Wesleyan Holiness in their soteriology so I wouldn’t be shocked if they believed it. I don’t know what it entirely is from the explanation of a Wesleyan describing it, but I would consider both the Wesley brothers as Christian.

Yes, the CotN is Wesleyan and has that Holiness movement heritage. As a church, we tend to put a lot of our effort and resources into children's ministries, missions, what we call 'compassionate ministries', and scholasticism :)

We have Board members that are voted in by the congregation at large, we have Elders which are members of the church which have dedicated their lives to the work of the church,( Spreading the gospel to every corner of the world.) and who the church has honored with this title, the churches main focus is the great commission and so missionary work is very important to us.

Technically we have deacons, but in all the Nazarene churches I am familiar with, the word is never actually heard in practice. Maybe at an ordination service you would hear it. All ordained pastors in the Church of the Nazarene are either Elders or Deacons: an Elder if their call to ministry will involve a significant amount of preaching, and a Deacon if their call to ministry will mainly be focused on the various non-preaching aspects of ministry. Seriously, though, in the churches I grew up in we just call everyone pastor (or maybe reverend, more rarely).

I grew up in the Church of the Nazarene: From cape Town to Port Elizabeth - with Pastor Cupido. When I was 7 years old, I felt a presence in the Church - something I will never forget. Filled with Holiness beyond what any language can describe. A while later, someone prayed over my failing legs and they have been healed ever since...
Eventually, in time - I started questioning and rejecting the bible. I studied religion - mainly christianity's origins and islam, from the quran to the 9 volumes of Sahih al Bukhari's hadiths. I want to prove everyone wrong - that there was no GOD. I studied science, dabbled in archeology and mocked and jeered any Christian along the way...
Then it happened... HE showed up. As much as I was trying to rejecting HIM, HE pursued me even more! Grace, Love, Hope, Freedom, Peace and Mercy beyond describable.
Today, I am HIS - I belong to HIM. I accepted someone as filthy and tarnished and sinful as me. I will always be grateful and have a soft spot for the Nazarene Church. Though I no longer attend the church (can't find one anywhere), I draw from the memories and love the church has shown me many years ago...
And no - I don't speak in tongues. To my knowledge - based on Acts - it describes languages understandable by others... If it happens, The Lord will allow it. Until then, I will not fake it - The Lord sees and knows everything. HE was 100% with me and I will pursue forever being 100% with HIM.
I was curious what they were, since the name has always been somewhat of an outlier. It certainly doesn't indicate they take after Methodist or Wesley.
3rd generation Nazarene here.... We are similar to the Methodist Church but are separate. We are the largest Wesleyan Holiness denomination. It could be said that we are a "sister" denomination to the Wesleyan Church, Church of God (Anderson), Wesleyan Methodist, Churches of Christ in Christian Union, Free Methodist and the Salvation Army.
The impetus for the forming of CoTN came when Phineas Bresee, a Methodist pastor in Los Angeles, left the itinerate ministry ranks to work with a rescue mission for the homeless. After a rift occurred between Bresee and other leaders at the mission, he formed an independent church to continue ministering to poor families in LA. From that home base, Bresee planted other congregations in the US. Those congregations, along with other small holiness confederations, allied to create the present-day Church of the Nazarene.
Their focus is on Wesley's teaching on "being made perfect in love", which they call "entire sanctification". In that respect and in a core value of ministry to the poor, that is where they are Wesleyan. To a degree, they are probably closer to the Salvation Army than the United Methodists.

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly equipped for all good works." (2 Timothy 3:16-17) I need to reconsider the Nazarene Church.

We don’t call our pastors father, we don’t have nuns, we don’t put Mary and Joseph high up there (but we do believe they are still very important), we used to be strict with what we wear like no jewelry, no hats, women could only wear skirts, women couldn’t cut their hair, and that’s pretty much what I remember
We tend towards Arminian theology and we have the doctrine of Entire Sanctification, which contrary to popular rumor does *not* mean being sinless and somehow no longer needing God's continuing grace. More along the lines of 'doing exactly what God wants us to be doing at the moment'. Don't take my word for it though, you can read up about it :) I only have a layperson's understanding of the concept.

19 Well, now let's take verses 9 and 10: It is written, "And He says to me, Write, Blessed are they who are called to the Supper of the marriage of the Lamb. Reject speaking in tongue? its third manifest of Holy Spirit in beginning to receive gift in spiritual term

It is an overstatement to say Nazarenes 'reject' speaking in tongues: more to the point we reject that it is necessary as proof of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. And we definitely don't go out of our way to encourage people to speak in tongues during church services - it would be pretty extraordinary for that to happen in a Nazarene church. People would be nervous and confused (and maybe skeptical as well), as it would be unfamiliar and unexpected. But it would not necessarily be rejected out of hand.
1 I take my text this morning from Revelation 14:6-10. I read: "And I saw another angel flying in mid-heaven, having the everlasting glad tidings to announce to those settled on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people, saying with a loud voice: fear God and give Him glory, for the hour of his judgment has come; and do homage to Him who has made Heaven and the earth and the sea and fountains of waters. And another, a second angel, followed, saying: Great Babylon has fallen, has fallen, which of the wine of the fury of her fornication has made all nations drink. And another, a third, angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any one do homage to the beast and its image, and receive a mark upon his forehead or upon his hand, he also shall drink of the wine of the fury of God prepared unmixed in the cup of his wrath, and he shall be tormented in fire and brimstone before the holy angels and before the Lamb." ...
2 Well. The entire earth constantly prays for an awakening. And given the importance of such a request, God will answer. But the awakening comes only by the Word of restoration. The Jews were expecting an awakening but according to their taste.
3 Now let’s come back to verse 6. Where does the angel of verse 6 come from? This angel comes from the deposit of the Word that is in the Heaven according to Psalm 119:89 and not in the Bible. The Word of God comes from Heaven through an angel while the word of the devil comes from the abyss through pastoral school. This angel comes from the temple, from the model of the Church which is in Heaven and not in the book of Acts of the Apostles, in the Vatican or in the United States. God revealed It to Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel and to all the prophets. [Kc.3v1-3] [Kc.57v8]
4 Paul and the Apostles saw this model in the Heaven and laid its foundation on earth. 1 Corinthians 3:10-11 and Ephesians 2:20 clearly show that. Now, where is therefore the foundation of all these churches, the missions and ministries that we see on the whole face of the earth? Know that these Catholic, Protestant, evangelical, and Branhamist churches rise from the abyss and go to perdition. Death and the dwelling place of the dead accompany them. They search for supports and foundations here and there in the Bible on such and such thing but know that they rise from the abyss and go to perdition. [Ed: The congregation says: “Amen!”]. You should really cover the conservative holiness movement. Denominations include the ICHA, Pilgrim Holiness, and Bible Holiness. The Nazarenes, according to the CHM, is liberal and there is some bad blood between them.
I don't believe in forfeiting salvation. That kind of thing reminds me of my own childhood growing up as one of jehovah's witnesses. I definitely believe in once saved, always saved. What kind of loving Creator and Savior would reject someone for having doubts or just finding a different spiritual path that works better for the individual? I just can't get behind it

A belief that someone can forfeit salvation or backslide does not entail rejecting someone for having doubts. I don't know any Nazarenes who would attest that God cannot handle our doubts. That bit about the 'different spiritual path' is 'right out' however, to quote Monty Python. God redeems us and conforms us to Christlikeness, in his will. He helps us 'put to death' the former self of sin, which is often what the general philosophy of "follow your heart, be true to yourself" is trying to sadly and tragically cling on to. You've got to choose: your way or God's way. The broad gate or the narrow gate. If you choose the narrow gate, you will inevitably change - a lot. That change is God's redemptive work being done in you.
The Church of the Nazarene tends towards Arminianism rather than Calvinism, so we typically believe that free will and choice are at play throughout our entire lives. It follows that, yes, although there could never be a good reason for it and although it would always be the wrong choice to make, people can choose to turn their back on God after they have come to know him. I would expect God's prevenient grace to still be reaching out to such a person, though, always offering them a way back, always calling for them to come home and be reconciled like the prodigal son.
It’s funny because the gifts of the spirit are right there in the Bible and Nazarene believe in none of them occurring today which in and of itself is denying the Holy Spirit. What is impossible for humans is possible with God.

Friends, first of all, Nazarenes don't reject speaking in tongues out of hand, we just reject the idea that it is necessary, and we don't put a big emphasis on it. Second...the New Testament says some other stuff about speaking in tongues as well, specifically that it is not paramount. And I would say that we do believe in the gifts the spirit. Speaking as a Nazarene myself :)

There defo is some charlatans out there but I can confirm that the Holy Spirit really does still move through giving people visions, dreams, words of knowledge, etc. I've had authentic Pastors receive a word from the Holy Spirit about my life before and it has turned out to be 100% accurate.

BUT the temptation to presumption is very powerful and i have as of yet (after 44 years a christian ) never met a true prophet of God even though i was reached through a couple of stunning prophecies in my old church which read my mind from across the room by means of a total stranger

there is a two-fold meaning to the term. I agree with others: I see zero context in scripture that says prophesies ended. In fact, Paul says some have the gift of prophesy. HOWEVER, saying "God gave me a revelation that I should divorce my wife and marry this younger woman" does not pass the smell test. Yes, that did happen, and no, those and other "personal gain" prophesies were not what it meant then or now.

@@Lukegriz77 from my limited but lifetime experience, it seems that the beginning of pretty much any 'movement' had sound theological education and experience among the founders, and as it propagates, there is a steady decline in the level of knowledge among the clergy as the movement expands. The original "Pentecostal" context was 'the move of the Holy Spirit" much like Pentecost in Acts Ch. 2. And I can understand that desire. But as that movement spread without the root knowledge, the gifts themselves became the focus instead of the seeking of the Spirit. Somewhere along the way, the focus became an emotional experience INSTEAD of a heart change, not in addition to. At some point, the "showmanship" took over and those who at times are more like Simon the magician in Acts than Simon Peter ended up performing instead of preaching. I mentioned the change in the Church of the Nazarene-I got there after the fundamentalism had died down, and I would posit that a big part of that was the education system the Church of the Nazarene developed. As knowledge expanded, legalism degreased. The focus became less and less on external actions and more on heart change that results in spiritual maturity. Can that go too far? Yes, many mainline denominations demonstrate that. But overall, there needs to be a balance between the two.

Being a Nazarene means you are in a dying church who believes in works as part of your salvation.....I know ....I grew up in one. Didn't make much sense then and it makes no sense as an adult. Observing the members in their daily life and you wondered if any of them were "trying to turn from their sins".....I can tell you that quite a few could not turn away from the buffet and we all know what the bible says about gluttons.....and this is just one example......just didn't see a whole lot of effort on the part of some to turn away from those sins. So you always wonder where is the drawing line for God.....did you turn away enough? How torturous it must be to go through life not knowing that you are absolutely saved and going to your just rewards. And it blows my mind that these people cannot read Romans and figure it out.....maybe they are reading something other than the KJV and most of the verses that have been deleted or changed have to do with salvation....big shocker.....so many verses telling you your works are fruitless when it comes to entering the kingdom.....yet they don't see.....probably because they are not saved and the unsaved cannot discern scripture.....luckily I escaped that nonsense.
1 Like the prophets of the Bible, in April 1993, I, Kacou Philippe, a man who had never been in a church, I receive in a vision, the visitation of an Angel who commissions me for a Message destined to the whole earth in fulfillment of Matthew 25:6 and Revelation 12:14. I was born in the Nazarene church grew up Nazarene in South Africa under the teaching of Reverend Zurcker I moved away from the church they don't belief in the demonstration of the Holy Spirit the speaking in tongues etc I always felt being in the church that something was missing so when we as a group started to belief in the demonstration of God's power we were asked to leave the church and we did ...that was the best move ever😅

If you're talking about "Glossa" (speaking in a comprehensive language, as described very clearly in Acts 2) then don't mind reading the rest of my commentary and forgive me.
The pastor was very wrong according to your testimony. He should've explained to you about "speaking in tongues" and treated you with love. The way you presented looks like he "ban hammered" you of a sudden and for no reason. I'm from a baptist church, from Brazil, and so glad to have a pastor that will listen to my doubts and try to help, that cares about the sheeps. I love him so much. Even if (hipotetically speaking) he was a bad pastor and wanted to instant cut me off the church, for whatever reasons, it would require an approval of the members of the church. That's one of the reasons I like the baptist churchs around here, they are democratic. Anyways, i'm sad you got cut off, and worse... for such a little thing. Instead he should've clarified your doubt in the class of sunday school or personally. Me and my pastor, we talked for hours about speaking in tongues, it's such a complicated topic but the Bible is very clear about it. I think any follower of Christ that has access to the Bible can pray for elucidation and read what is written, I think even my father who doesn't know how to read can understand what's written in the book of Acts chapter 2. I suppose you have the habit of reading the Bible and praying everyday, so read Acts and 1 Corinthians for yourself without the glasses of denominations, study about it and try to understand as a whole (not isolated verses). I am a Nazarene, I love my church,I use to attend a pentecostal church but i hate speaking in tongues, there is no meaning in speaking in tongues,and i follow many pastor's in pentecostal church but they speaking in tongues but when they come outside the church they live different, they cosiping to much and lie to much, speaking in tongues is not the full power of the holy spirit

Nazarenes do believe in the gifts of the spirit and do not take the position some protestants do that apostolic gifts stopped in the first generation of the church. We just do not believe in tongues the same way Pentacostals and other charismatic churches do. Our articles of faith explicitly mention divine healing still takes place and when I grew up missionaries would tell of divine healings, prophecies, casting out of demons, and miraculous communication with people of different languages (tongues). We do not, however, practice tongues as a "prayer language" that everyone should seek to adopt. From our manual "To affirm that even a special or any alleged physical evidence, or “prayer language,” is evidence of the baptism with the Spirit is contrary to the biblical and historic position of the Church. (2009)"
22 And there was a time when, in the quest for immortality, a prophet came from heaven to teach the seven colours of birth, the seven colours of God's covenant with men. Blue, yellow, red, orange, green, purple and indigo. And the rainbow appeared to confirm his Message. They believe in attaining sinless perfection in this life. They are hellbound.
Christ's admonition to "be holy, as I am holy", ring any bells?
I don't know any Nazarenes who believe they are in a state of sinless perfection, including the many pastors I know (who need to attest that they have been entirely sanctified as a prerequisite for ordination). Entire Sanctification does not mean what some people think it means. And yes, that verse mandating us to "be holy, because I am holy" comes to mind. Our theology is hopeful and optimistic: we trust God and believe that when he commands something, it is possible. We take him at his word. We believe he is always at work in us. We believe he will see his plan for us through. We believe that by his grace and with his help, we can in fact do his will, that he calls us to do.
1 [Ed: Brother Philippe reads Revelation 16:13, 14 and 16] ... In verse 13, they are churches gathering, making converts for the war of Armagedon. The Bible says that they are spirits of demons, the same as those of Matthew 24:24. It is the same war as Revelation 12:15 to 17 and Revelation 19:11 to 21. The first war of Armagedon thus took place in the heaven. But on the earth, the first war took place during the departure of Israel out of Egypt. But God who is just will send a prophet in your lifetime, to show you the way to heaven, just as before you, He also sent prophets to show the way to heaven to generations before you.

The Nazarene was a sect of Jewish-Christains during the 1st-4th centuries even St. Jerome spoken about them. They however are not part of the Church like many earlier sects by rejecting certain dogmatic truths were regarded by the Orthodoxy Christians as apostates to the faith.
The Ebonite sect and Nazarene sect denied the Divinity of Jesus as God. Both sects regarded Jesus as a Man and revered Him as a prophet. The only real notable difference that the Ebonites rejected the virgin birth of Jesus believed that He was the child of Joseph and Mary. The early Christians during the 1st century were called Nazarene that is until St. Peter established the Church of Antioch and they began to call themselves Christians instead. The Christians never denied that Jesus was God even back when they were the Nazarene. The Nazarene was split between Christians and other sects like the Nazarene sect. It's a poor choice to use the word for a Christian Protestant denomination. The Nazarene sect rejected the teachings of St. Paul and Christians regarded them as Judaizers.
Ebionite. Comes from Evyon = the Poor. Ebonite Church actually (sort of) exists, as it was one name used by some black churches back in the '80s and '90s.
@@andrewsuryali8540 They certainly were later on deemed by the Church as being a Non-Christian sect in their rejection of the Divinity of Jesus as God. The Ebonite sect was closer to Judaism than to Christianity in fact they considered themselves as Jews. The only reason why I even mentioned them because they had more in common with the Nazarene sect.
Christians in Antioch didn’t call themselves “Christian.” They were followers of “The Way” in Antioch to make fun of the followers of the way people started to call them little Christs or Christians. While yes about The Nazarene sect, the reason why Pheanes Bresee chose that name was two fold. One, noticed it’s The Church of “the Nazarene” - Jesus was of Nazareth and Nathaniel asked can anything good come from Nazareth? Yes, our Lord. Jesus did not come in the halls of power like The wise men thought. Jesus came for the least of these. Well, we know that all prophet messengers received their Message from Heaven and let’s see now this Message of verses 6 and 7. This is the very first Message that says to the African for example to worship the true God who made the sky: the stars, the sun, the moon and even the fallen angels who use horoscopes, mystical orders and religions. God has never been in a religion. True Christianity is not a religion but a life. This angel calls on Haitians and Beninese to quit voodoo, fetishism, customs and any other forms of worships and invocations... God has created land for our life and we must not transform it into sacred forests or groves, into statues and masks to worship it. That was the Message of the first angel. And this first angel, it is Apostle Paul. The sea and springs of water were not created to be worshipped but it is God that we must worship; it is God who is the creator. You see?

So, it is the believer's choice to be saved? We have power that Christ doesn't have since He cannot hold us in His hand? We can snatch ourselves out of His hand, though Jesus said we cannot? So, when Christ died on the cross, it wasn't enough for us to be fully forgiven? We have to have a second experience to be fully free from sin? So when we die without this second experience we will die for our sin nature? So, it's okay to believe in evolution, though that denies the creation facts that God has given us and it has been disproven scientifically? These things make this a cult.
We're not a cult, entire sanctification is not about being 'saved again' or being perfect as yet, of course we believe God is sovereign (and we don't believe the concept of free will is at odds with that), many of us (the majority of us?) do not believe in macroevolution or in an old earth, yes of course we believe Christ's sacrifice is sufficient, of course we hold that the Bible is of paramount importance, no of course we don't think we have greater power than Christ does, yes of course we believe that without God's prevenient grace none of us could be saved (we just tend to believe he offers salvation to everyone. Yes, it is a paradox that God could want something ("Repent and live!" he says in Ezekiel) and not immediately make it come to pass with his omnipotent power (which we do not dispute he has, just like we do not dispute that God is sovereign). He does stuff we don't understand sometimes. It is a paradox we are okay with and at peace about. The Bible is full of paradoxes (why would God ever feel grief, unless he was for some reason choosing to feel grief that he ultimately does not *need* to feel, given that he is complete and perfect in and of himself). We trust God even while we continue to see through a mirror darkly down here.
Once again, for those in the back...we are not a cult. Save that kind of label for Jehovah's Witnesses, or the LDS, or the Unitarians. We have no idolized personality that we worship. And in point of fact we value and believe God and truth and the Scriptures above the whims and philosophies that come and go within the cultures and societies of this fallen world. After the death of Khadija, Mahomet took nine legitimate wives and tens of concubines, of whom the most loved was Aisha, the daughter of his friend Abu Bakr, who would be the first caliph, the first vicar after the death of Mahomet. Aisha was six years old when he took her as his fiancée and married her when she was nine years old. Thus, Mahomet married Aisha when she was nine years old. And it was in Aisha’s arms that Mahomet died, sick, when she was eighteen years old. However, know that they are not those things concerning his private life that make him a false prophet.
9 But how did Mahomet begin his ministry? According to the lie of Islam, around 612, retired for a meditation, he was sleeping in a cave of Mount Hira and he had a dream. The angel Jibril who is not the Archangel Gabriel of the Bible, came to him and asked him to read in a scroll. Mahomet tells him: "I do not know how to read!" But when Mahomet woke up, he had the impression that a book had come down in his heart; that is the reality of the Mawlid. The Quran did not literally come down from heaven as it is insinuated but it had come down in the heart of Mahomet. And that day, after exiting the cave, he sees the same huge angel, filling the horizon and that greets him saying: "Greetings, messenger of Allah."
10 Thus, as he was fatherless at his birth, his name was first “Ma-Homet”, that is to say “Not acknowledged”or “illegitimate”.It was when he became a prophet that his name was changed to Mohammed, that is to say “blessed of God”. But in the beginning, it was “Ma-Homet”, that is to say “Not acknowledged”.“Ma” expresses negation in Arabic.You see?Saul and Paul for Christianity, Mahomet and Mohammed for Islam. I would say that the Nazarene church is a Pentecostal church. The women's dress code is pretty much the same as other Pentecostals -- long denim shirts and plain blouse. Long hair styled into a bun in the back. No makeup. The dress code is different in most suburban areas.
Hey Jack this might have been true of the Church of the Nazarene back in the 1930's and 40's but the Church doesn't have a strict dress code anymore. There are plenty of churches on our districts that lean more contemporary and if you were to walk into the church you would see plenty of people wearing casual clothes and maybe even the Pastor preaching in denim. There are also lots of women who wear makeup and have different hairstyles as well. Thankfully the denomination is not as legalistic as it used to be
@@rawtheran9319 yeah, VERY few congregations hang to the old church doctrine I was in the denomination for about a decade around the turn of the century and still attend instruction taught by Nazarene professors, and I've not seen that (but heard a lot about it) anytime I've been to a Nazarene church.

The Church of the Nazarene is not and has never been a "Pentecostal" church. When the COTN was organized the original name was the Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene. The word "Pentecostal" was dropped when charismatic churches began to flourish. The style of dress for women as you described, pretty much ended in the 1960s. While there may be some that continue to dress that way would be an exception.

@Poker Monkey - Have you ever eaten Apple Pie? There are thousands and thousands of variations of the original recipe. Doesn't mean the newer versions are better or worse than the original, just different. I don't consider Protestant churches being part of a "big mess".
