In very humid environment, for example in Kolkata, India, ficus religiosa grows aerial roots. I have ficus religiosa and it has grown aerial roots in the monsoon. But as the rains stopped, they dried out. Young aerial roots are dark pink to red in colour but as they age it gets brown.

Miss-identification caught me recently as well. Someone gave me a Norfolk Island Pine, I posted a picture on the Ontario Bonsai page and a member commented that it was actually a Cook Pine. Turns out nearly all Norfolk Island Pine are misidentified. Likely because the same man discovered both. and young ones look similar. It looked like all the other ones I've had as well... Oops Haha! Cute Leaf hopper! :) I love how that Ficus keeps it's belly button, Like it should have a grass skirt on :D

almost all ficus normally grow airial roots but it depends on the humidity. Ficus Plants are strangler figs so they all grow onto another tree from top to bottom. All these long like tentacles are roots and airial roots and they need all of these as support for her own body weight or for the heavy branches. But this mystic look happens more in nature when they growing up and old. Some Ficus are more than 100 years old. There are around 1000 Ficus species on earth. So the ficus religiosa forms airial roots as well when he gets a lot of humidity in his enviroment

My religiosa seeds came today. I didn’t realize they were so small! I watered the soil, placed them on the top of the soil, then sprayed them with a water bottle and placed the pot in a ziplock bag on a west facing window sill. I guess now just patience. Maybe I’ll mist the top of the soil every few days. Hopefully I get at least one to take.

Looking up Ficus Religiosa bonsai you constantly see aerial roots.
Apparently in their native habitat seeds get stuck in the upper canopy - usually due to birds, which produce non-parasitic aerial roots that extend to the ground eventually forming a trunk.
Seeing images of particularly large, older trees it's pretty insane how chaotic they can get. Trees melting into other trees. Mother nature, you crazy.

@@TheBonsaiZone Religiosa has the reputation of providing the most shade, hence its branches will go laterally by default. Grows aerials very close to the main trunk as the first priority & become a part of it, as to counterbalance the growth of its branches on lateral side
Humidity (70%) + Lateral focused = Aerial Roots
Keep your Ficus elastica near a pond & pour water every single day, because I have seen it grow well in the wettest places on earth(Meghalaya) and may suggest you to bring a Ficus Benghalensis (king of aerials) if you really want them
