- It's been 3 years since my Ficus religiosa bonsai was last re potted. Today it gets a root prune and a new bonsai pot!
Ficus religiosa is known as the Sacred Fig, Bo Fig, bodhi tree, pippala tree, peepul tree, peepal tree or ashwattha tree in India and Nepal.

Nigel, I wonder what would happen if you planted some of those roots? Would it sprout a new tree? Ficus religiosa grows really well, so I wouldn't be surprised if a planted root started a whole new tree!
I have seen others grow a Ficus from a root cutting, but I have never had success myself....yet!

I've been doing that drainage screen also. One tree I didn't do it to is now dead from a grub that ate my tree from inside out. It was a tree I doubt I'll ever be able to replace which was a frankincense tree Boswellia rivea.😢

Why do you put moss in the bonsai pots, is it just for looks or does it help retain moisture?
I'll try to explain, but i'd love to have an expert answer this question, because i'm not sure and i want to know, too :D
I think for the soil it would better to not be covered by moss so it can breathe better... There would be no benefit for the plant to hold the moisture using moss, since the soil alone holds moisture as long as it has to and after it's dry, you can water it.
On the other hand it just looks beautiful, right? :D
In case of the tree in this video, the moss wasn't planted on purpose, but grew there on it's own. I think moss surely has an aesthetical aspect and makes most trees look better. But that's a matter of taste I guess. Depending on what kind of moss you use, it can be beneficial for the tree (there are good and bad types of moss though). In general, moss does help keeping the humidity up a bit and keeping the moisure in the soil a bit longer, which in a fast draining soil, which bonsai soil usually is, should be rather beneficial since you usually want to keep the soil somewhat moist (not wet or completely dry, just moist). I wonder if it has any effect on the breathing of the tree. I'd guess that the density of the soil itself is a bigger factor, rather than a bit moss on top.

Moss looks good and is good for the tree roots. It also holds the dirt in place and keeps in moisture. It is not got to let it grow on the trunk though.

It is possible. Every time I cut back the growing tips, I do get more ramification, so I'm hoping that it will increase over the up coming years. We have such a short growing season here, so everything takes twice a s long as in a tropical climate.
One of the nicest Ficus Religiosa bonsai that I've seen. It has developed into exactly how I imagine a Ficus Religiosa should look. What is a "potato root"?
A Potato root is a root that looks like a potato. Most Ficus will develop these under the soil. The anchor the tree in the ground in nature to stop them toppling over in a storm. Regular root work will keep them under control, but if the roots are left unchecked, they will grow big bulbous roots in the soil. They will have to be removed in the future as they can get very ugly! Here is a good article on Ficus roots....

Hello Nigel, where did you get ficus religiosa tree? Did you bought in seeds first?
Hey I have a ficus benjimina for a few years now and I get decent growth up top but definitely not good root growth. What could be causing this? I water about 1x a week. It over all looks healthy up top but like I said not underneath.
Usually the root growth will balance the top growth, so if you let the top of the tree grow, then the roots will grow with equal vigor. If the top is kept pruned and not allows to grow wild, then the roots will grow with little vigor also. A good free draining bonsai soil will help also. The soil should go almost dry at the end of each day and if the tree is in full sun, it should require a daily water or even twice a day in hot dry weather. This drying out of the soil stimulates the roots to grow and search for more moisture in the pot. If the soil is kept too moist all the time, the roots are happy and don't need to grow searching for moisture.
When cutting the roots, how do you know how far can you go without killing the tree?

It is possible to grow a Ficus from a root cutting. I've had no luck doing this, but I have seen others do it successfully.
I have a dawn redwood bonsai forest planting that really needs repotting but I wasn't sure if this was a good time of year to do that. It also recently lost its foliage, so I also wasn't sure if I should wait until it's regained its vigor first
Yes, I would baby it until it regains it's vigor, re potting could kill them when they are weak.

I'd wait until it's vigorous and back in good health. It's stressful for the tree to be re-potted.. I'd wait 'til the growing season is over or next spring, since the dawn redwood is deciduous. Learned this one from Nigel ;)
From where do you collect religiosa
This tree was started from a very young nursery plant. They are very hard to find here in Canada, I just got lucky that I found them, I've never seen any for sale since! You can order seeds here...
