How do you compete with Uber drivers? It seems too many cabbies chasing fewer customers. Anyway I love your channel. You need to check out Assassins Creed Syndicate set in Victorian London. The detail is immense
Hi Tom, great videos! Starting my knowledge on the 25th run now. Wondering what is an average daily or monthly income for a cabbie? And what do you think about the future of industry? Thanks
Reno A great start! I talk about the future and industry in my other video 5 excuses to not study The Knowledge. As for pay, it varies wildly from person to person due to expenses, how far your commute is and of course the hours you put in.
Hi Reno I will give you a straight answer .I have been a cab driver 10 years and have always loved the job mainly for the freedom.Earnings are from 01. January to 20 may 2019 driving 9 hours door to door from chadwell heath day driver.average daily earnings over the above period are £120 per day .from that figure you need to take diesel £23.per day.cab rental £45 per day then tax.If you after better money you need to work peak nights and 12 hour shifts and 6 and 7 days which is good short term but long term you have no life there are many cab drivers stuck in that live.or may I say have no life.
Do you treat passengers as customers and leave them to themselves or treat them like friends and spark up conversations? Just curious. Great vid again (:
George Gilbert a bit of both. I always greet and ask passengers how they are are, if the conversation flows I go with it, if not then I let them have their space 👍🏻
Good vid Tom. It’s good to see a younger cabbie talking about the trade. Best advice I ever got was to keep your expenses down. A cheap cab, earns the same as an expensive one. Don’t get in too much debt if you can help it. All the best 👍
Thanks Jumbo, very wise words, also renting a cheap cab is no excuse for leaving it unclean... we offer a premium service so every facet of the trade has to represent that 👍🏻
Hi mate, just curious on how many times a week you went out when studying your blue books? Did you also study a lot from home as you live outside of London? If so what where your methods (Google Street view and penning etc)
Hi Tim, I’d try and get out 3 times a week, so couple of week nights and a weekend early morning. That would be Blue books and then later my pointing schedule. Map work is a daily ritual. It becomes even more so on point to point and appearances, evenings I wasn’t in London I would spend the entire evening in front of the map calling the daily sheet. What stage are you at Tim?
@@TomtheTaxiDriver Hi mate, thanks for the response. I'm currently on B1 run 25 - KP style (quarter miles, points and links runs). I usually go out 3/4 times a week and do a run a day, so 3 or 4 quality runs a week in total. I also call over most days and go back over what I've learnt by penning the map and using google street view to refresh my visual memory. Can't wait until I reach my appearances/pointing stage as it's so cold out on my bike lol. But the foundations have to learnt so I have to just keep going. Thanks
Tim, at this stage it sounds like you have a very healthy and good routine 👍🏻 Keep it going, my only suggestion is to forecast when you will finish you blue books... as you progress you may find you can increase your BB numbers but as everyone always says, quality over quantity 👍🏻 Please updated us on your progress mate 👍🏻
Hi Tom amazing videos iv been following your page for nearly a year and benefited alot from them, im on BB1 nearly finishing it but only learning runs without the POI Can you make a video on how people should point after finishing all BB books? Thank you Topman
Tom pls help,I'm currently doing the yellow badge as I have a full time job and yes I want to do the green badge once I gained my freedom thru the yellow badge. Please could you explain to me what is the quarter mile?,is it same as the points?,if not how to do them plz?Thank u Tom your videos are really helpful.
Hey Kacaanka, Quarter miles are quite simply the area around the start or end point of a run. So for Green Badge the end point of Run No.1 is Gisbon Square. The idea of the 1/4 mile is that you pick up points and roads within that area so build up your knowledge. So in reply to your question, points and roads are contained in the quarter mile. The amount of points in a 1/4 mile varies in location, so the 1/4 mile ending on Thurlow Park Road might only have 3 points. The 1/4 mile starting at Aldwych might contain 50+ points! For the example of Gibson square 1/4 mile, there are a few restaurants on Theberton St, Therberton St is linked between Liverpool Rd and Upper St, so again explore those areas, Cross St then links Upper St to Essex Road and so forth. Once Green Badges have completed their Blue Books, doing 1/4 miles create what is known as The Dumbell effect. 320 runs creates 640 start/end points, meaning 640 1/4 miles. By the end of your blue book these 1/4 mile areas will overlap one another or be next to one another. Be lucky and keep on pushing!
Mate, look for the smallest Police cell on Trafalgar Sq, it's in the bottom of a lamppost. Back in the day, police would hold someone in there and then go and get their horse etc...Little bit of knowledge for ya
It would be funny if a candidate turns up at the exam, when the examiner asks "How to get from A to B?" and the candidate replies "What day of the week is this?"
Funnily enough, you do have to taker timed restrictions into consideration on the exam. I.e. You cannot drive through bank junction from during 7am - 7pm Monday - Friday. If your exam falls between those hours, you have to divert appropriately. I've heard of stories from decades ago where the examiner would say "it's Sunday, I would like to go to X location". knowing that the most optimum route would involve The Mall. Of course on Sundays the mall is closed, so it's an exercise to ensure the candidate knows this.
Overheads are way too high now to make this job economically viable unless you are prepared to put in minimum 70 hours per week,no holiday pay no sick pay ,,vulnerable to even slight dips in the economy..This job is not for people that have anxiety as you will spend your whole life worrying about your takings .
Keep up with the videos mate...really useful!

Tom, need advise here. It seems I can't find decent brackets for my scooter. Where did u buy/ how did you make yours? Cheers
Hi Luca,
I had a larger motorbike so used a tank bag to store my maps. I believe the knowledge schools sell brackets for scooters 👍🏻
Thanks

Full marks.
Can i ask you how to get the blue book
Hi Viktorija,
Most Knowledge schools (Eleanor Cross, Knowledge Point, Wiz Ann) sell their own blue books 👍🏻
