Bringing in coaches and executives related to the career path of particular player doesn’t guarantee success. Kyle Dubas, when GM of the Leafs, two Aussies ago brought in a Matt Murray who, like Dubas, have been part of the Soo Greyhounds of the OHL. Dubas was GM of that major-junior club but found himself, after his first NHL GM job, having overseen the win of just a single playoff game beyond an opening-round series, with Murray having spent a lot of time out of the lineup due to frequent injuries. Dubas IMO was a complete idiot to have gone for Murray despite that goalie’s injury history even going back to his time with the Penguins. Jack Campbell with the Leafs wasn’t great, but to give him a relatively high per-season cap-hit despite having played nowhere close to 75% of his team’s regular-season games in a given season with the Leafs is one of the stupidest decisions Ken Holland will have ever made by the time his GM tenure ends in June.

      @@carletonrutherford1799
Your reply is one of anger and bitterness.
      Let's breakdown the argument
      FIRST
You have not taking into account that a coach would have had no choice but to take direction from the Office and Upper Management during last years playoff run.
Putting in and playing Campbell was the SMART move when your Starting Goalie is obviously having serious problems. Play the HOT Goaltender, and ride em until the end or they lose their HOT, whichever comes first, and if they lose it, then put in the other one.
That did NOT happen, sure you can blame the coach, but any coach knows when to STOP putting in a Starter that is having issues. He was directed by the Office/Upper Management to keep playing SKINNER. WHY?
      SECOND
NEXT glaringly obvious problem that a coach, upon exiting an otherwise excellent Playoff Run, one that could have gone all the way had he NOT been forced to keep putting in SKINNER, would be to look at what went wrong.
He would have IDENTIFIED 2 glaring Issues
      GOALTENDING
      &
      DEFENSIVE PLAY
The coach would then make suggestions to the OFFICE/ Upper Management in order to rectify those issues.
OBVIOUSLY it fell on Deaf Ears.
      WHY?
      THIRD
His background show SUCCESS without BIG NAMES ot Generational Talent, as you like to point out.
He started as a Video Coach for the RED WINGS and was part of a STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONSHIP Team.
He then went on to Coach the Bakersfield Condors where he took them from 7th to 1st and with exception of the 2019/20 season, that was shut down due to the PLAN demic, had an above 600 record in those seasons.
Unfortunately, the Coach was FIRED not because he wasn't doing his job, BUT rather he was.
He pointed out glaringly obvious holes in the Defensive side of things, and a goaltending issue.
      NOTHING was done about it.
The Oilers and their Offensive Talent along with SOLID coaching by Woodcroft, managed to cover it up for the lack of Goaltending, which was kinda working by trading each for the other throughout the season, but the Defense was a mess at best.
BUT that only works for so long.
A La last years Playoff run.
So what did the Oilers Front Office and Upper Management do?
They demoted the SUPERIOR Goalie of the two, in Campbell (11th overall and far Better Save percentage consistently compared to Skinner 78th overall) and did nothing to shore up their Swiss cheese defence and FIRED the coach that managed to get them where they are.
      Also of note
CAMPBELL was the First Goalie selected in 2010
      while
SKINNER was the 6th goalie selected in 2017
      WELL DONE!
Hold onto your Sub par Goalie, keep him as your starter
Do NOTHING to shore up Defensive holes
      FIRE your WINNING Head Coach
It reeks of BAD Management and those in positions of Power looking to save themselves by sacrificing Key pieces around them.
Only time will tell whether I was right and you were wrong all along.

This was a panic move to make Edmonton as comfortable for McDavid as possible, simply to hedge the bet against Connor (and Draisaitl a year before him) walking. They have to do this right now. Next year is Drai's last year under contract, if he does not stay there is ZERO chance McDavid stays a year later, so keeping Drai = keeping McDavid. They have had a decade and haven't been able to form a winning team around them, so they are hoping it will be comfy and familiar enough for Connor that he can't walk away on HIS people (the coach is his from Juniors, and the President of Hockey is his former agent). As a lifelong Red Wings fan........... Holland is the problem. He has a tendency to never address the actual issue, and fluff up random things that don't matter. Then when he does address the issue, goaltending in this case and frankly the last 3 years, he'll sign someone washed up or like the 4th best option and take a huge risk. Holland likes a "safe bet" like when he signs players he already knows, or just veterans practically at the end of their career and always fail to produce.

Holland had one job to do this offseason that would help the team right now. Defence and goaltending. Now we oilers fans weren’t expecting an all start player but maybe a bottom 6 D guy and a good back up goalie that can make some saves. That’s all Holland had to do could have used some draft picks maybe trade Cece to make some cap room it could have been done especially if you sweeten the deal with draft picks. But he gave us Brown and that’s nice and all but Oilers fans we’re really hoping for a goalie. And now his lack of being a GM got the coach fired.

You've got ongoing problems with poor goaltending and poor defense.
You've got a team that looks disengaged and unmotivated.
I've long had doubts about the Oilers' strategy of 99% offense and 1% defense, but if they aren't scoring goals then the guy drawing up the plays has to fall on his sword at some point.

I have said it for 4 years now :( Nurse is one of our main issues. Goaltending coach maybe? How many goalies do we need to run through our system before we change it up. We brought Campbell over when he was doing pretty good in Toronto and now he just has no confidence. He is a nice guy but at some point accountability needs to be held in the locker room, not just for Campbell but from the defense to the first line on the ice. It is everyone's fault we aren't winning. Can't put pucks in the net, don't feel like back checking, stupid penalties CONSTANTLY, blind passes and turnovers. I could continue listing until every negative thing in hockey is said but these are their main issues. They either don't trust the system they are working with or they don't feel like doing their job for whatever reason. We know how they perform when they want to it is just a matter of bringing back the teams morale unfortunately. It is one of the hardest things you can really do as a team. We can get out of it though it is not over yet. Glad to have you back on the hockey content as much as I dread seeing my own team in a spot like this :(

For a change I'm not sure I agree with you about the coach needing to be changed. Yes, I actually like woodcroft and he's done good things on the whole in Edmonton, but, the results and motivation he's getting this year from the players is frankly, abysmal. The players seem depleted, they seem listless of late especially after the San Jose loss... And they need an immediate impact that will help turn things around. Acquiring a goalie? I don't think that will change much. But a change in coach is garanteed to change the culture of the bench and make an impact on how the players are going about their shifts. This will pull focus off what they are doing poorly, and give them something different to focus on, that can only be a positive at this point. So ya, even though I like Woodcroft I see this as a possible way to salvage the whole season, which I didnt see happening with Woodcroft as coach regardless of how they may or may not have skinned the lineup looking for a better combination of players/ goaltenders. This Can't be a massive mistake imho, but I also do not disagree that holland needs to be held accountable as well. fire him too, but a coaching change is not a collasal mistake with the results demonstrated so far this year. Looking at what should be is not going to correct the problem. Hoping their LUCK will get better? That's just ridiculous dreaming at this point. They need immediate change if they hope to see the playoffs this year.
