The Oboe Concerto in D minor, SD 935, is an early 18th-century concerto for oboe, strings and continuo attributed to the Venetian composer Alessandro Marcello. The earliest extant manuscript containing Johann Sebastian Bach's solo keyboard arrangement of the concerto, BWV 974, dates from around 1715. As a concerto for oboe, strings and continuo its oldest extant sources date from 1717: that year it was printed in Amsterdam, and a C minor variant of the concerto, SZ 799, was written down.
Bach's keyboard version was published as an arrangement of a concerto by Antonio Vivaldi in the 19th century. In 1923 the C minor version of the oboe concerto was published as a composition by Benedetto Marcello, Alessandro's brother. In the second half of the 20th century several publications indicated Alessandro again as the composer of the piece, as it had been in its early 18th-century print, and the oboe concerto was again published in its D minor version.
In the 20th and 21st centuries the concerto developed into a well-established repertoire piece, as well as an oboe concerto as performed on keyboard.
The Concerto in D minor, SD 935, was published by Jeanne Roger in Amsterdam in 1717, as a Concerto a Cinque (concerto in five parts) for oboe (soloist), strings (two violin and one viola parts) and continuo composed by Alessandro Marcello. No publication date appears in the print: although the year of publication is, depending on author, sometimes given as "ca. 1714-1717" or "c.1716" it can be inferred from the consecutive testaments of the publisher's father (Estienne Roger) and from the sequence of publication numbers.
The publication presents the melody lines unadorned, that is: it is left to the performing musician to embellish melodies with ornaments such as trills, mordents and grace notes. Alessandro Marcello published most of his works under a pseudonym (Eterio Stinfalico): the oboe concerto publication was an exception in that sense as it used his real name.
Bach's manualiter arrangement, BWV 974, of the Marcello concerto was apparently not based on the Amsterdam edition, but must have been based on a (lost) manuscript version of the concerto that circulated before it was printed. The July 1713 to July 1714 timeframe may fit for the production of the arrangement of this concerto, although an earlier or later date is possible too. Bach's autograph of the solo keyboard arrangement is lost, but the arrangement was copied around 1715 by Bach's second cousin Johann Bernhard, as the third item in a manuscript containing 12 of Johann Sebastian's keyboard transcriptions of Italian and Italianate concertos.
In 1739 Johann Bernhard's son Johann Ernst wrote a title page for this collection, suggesting that the collection contained Vivaldi arrangements for organ exclusively. He may have intended this title page for the first concerto in the collection only (which was indeed an arrangement of a Vivaldi concerto), but an unknown hand later added the number "XII" before the title, thus causing the misunderstanding that all 12 were Vivaldi arrangements.
Another copy of Bach's arrangement indicates "Marcello" (without first name) as the composer of the original work, and J. S. Bach as the arranger. That copy, specifying harpsichord as the intended instrument for the arrangement, originated after Johann Bernhard's, but may have been copied from an earlier stage of Bach's arrangement. Another manuscript containing Bach's arrangement of Marcello's oboe concerto indicated "J. S. B." as composer on the title page, without mentioning an earlier model, or its composer, for the composition.
Another transcription of the concerto, as concerto a 5 for oboe, strings and continuo in C minor, is found in a 1717 manuscript. The type of errors in this manuscript seems to suggest that the transposition from D minor to C minor may have been produced by its scribes while copying. This manuscript writes the composer's name as "Marcello" without specifying a first name: as Alessandro's brother Benedetto was far better known as a composer by the name Marcello, later generations would interpret the title of the manuscript as referring to the better known of the "Marcello" composers.

Tres belle musique ❤
My dad use to play this on his Oboe and as a three year old I remember lying on his bed with the sun streaming through the bedroom window, with him and his oboe and music on his music stand! Sadly he’s not here anymore but listening to this brings back deep and powerful memories even after 10 years since he’s been gone. How wonderful is that for me? 😊
Amazing. Thank God for it, and for your dad.
I had a parallel experience with you, bot in my case my older brother were practicing some of these and many others! What annoyed him, was, that what he played three times, I could doodle it, I memorized them much quicker than he has, I was about ten then, sadly, he too passed on, but I have my connection with him whenever I listening the oboe, yet, amongst five other brother's he was not my favourite, which hardly matter's niw!
emocionante, y un fuerte abrazo
Despite your loss, you have been very lucky! Cheers from Italy
You have a great memory of dad. You are lucky!
I chose this piece to play on my oboe exam, wish me luck 🤞
Good luck!

When I listen to this melody I feel I am close to human perfection. How such a small instrument can produce such divine sounds!
It has been referred to as the "voice of God" in connection with Bach's music. (eg BWV 131, The Netherlands Bach Society, Martin Stadler, oboe).
This is the piece that made me fall in love with the oboe. Achingly beautiful...
I don't understand ppl who say classical music is boring. Its so interesting, beautiful and thought provoking. This is truly amazing!
People who can't read say books are boring. Tone deaf people say classical music is boring.
They're not real people😊
Its simple... most people have a very short attention span (about 3 minutes) Hence the length of most pop songs. They're bored before the piece has time to develop. It's like reading the first chapter of a great book and putting it down. 3 minutes! Oh the irony.
Those who say classical music is boring are people sith short attention spans, i.e. couch potatoes OD‘d on TV, esp US TV with its interruptions for ads every 10 minutes!
I wish everybody could speak like you.
The painting is of "Piazza Navona, Rome" 1699 by Casper van Wittel
Stephen Pattinson thanks
I was absolutely shure the work of maestro venitian painter Canaletto ..
well known as "gaspare vanvitelli" is son was a famous painter architect luigi vanvitelli
Thanks. I knew the location but not the painter!
It is interesting to see what appears to be bare earth in the open area. Anyone who has been to the Piazza knows its raised pavers. As for the painting there are a few telltale signs that the perspective was generated using a technique based on plans and elevations. The slight distortion in the foreground fountain is one indication.

I was in HS. Now almost 50. Love it still!
I discovered it thanks to the movie Anonimo veneziano (1970 or something like that), which showcases the adagio of this concerto (the male character is a musician recording this concerto before cancer takes him away).

In a world of selfish ignorance and scrabbling for money; and the faux power it grants, there is music like this. There are our enduring poets. There are passages of thought in words in all the world's languages which show us the long, winding path towards comprehension of the best of the best, the best we can aspire to and hope to encourage in the lives of those we love. This, surely, is one passage of deep, penetrating thought put to the music. I thank you. Price

Exquisite and elegant; inspired and soaring. Marcello, Albinoni, and Vivaldi seem to be spiritual brothers; Italian wunderkind! Marcel Ponseele is fabulous. Bravo, Sir!
Pienamente daccordo. Musica meravigliosa.

The Oboe Concerto in D minor, S D935, is an early 18th-century composition for oboe, strings and continuo attributed to the Venetian composer Alessandro Marcello. The Concerto composed in three movements was published by Jeanne Roger in Amsterdam in 1717. Marcello’s style is High Baroque, already foreshadowing the Classical Style, music of great depth and emotion, richly scored for a wide variety of solo instruments and continuo. She showcase a remarkably wide range of expression, atmosphere and timbre, but also for its stylish and sweetly modulated performances. This oboe concerto is probably the most beautiful of the Baroque period. Marcello composed several collections of soloist concertos, six of which were collected under the title La Cetra, as well as a few cantatas. He published his works under the pseudonym of Eterio Stinfalico. Johann Sebastian Bach was very influenced by Italian music, notably Vivaldi, Corelli, Torelli, Marcello and maybe others. A sincere work is that which is gifted with enough force to give reality to a dream. *Lucien*

The third movement always gives me goosebumps.. I'd like to learn the oboe just to perform this beauty
This is one of the first pieces you learn as a beginner oboe student. I learned this when i first started the oboe and wasn’t mature enough to understand the complex emotions the composer was trying to convey. It was just a “slow” song. It was pretty difficult because of the strategic breathing you had to do, but that was it to me at the time. I mean, I almost felt offended to use this piece to audition in university’s because this was a “beginner” piece. But wow. How wrong and foolish i was to think that!! Absolutely stunning piece.
Música celestial. El barroco italiano es conmovedor.
Maravilla de música. Relajante y sutil , Oboe, instrumento musical tan pequeño y grande a la vez.
Lovely oboe tone and phrasing.
I played this in college. If i played it today, i might add even more graces in the Baroque style. Yet Signor Ponseele's graces are very tasteful.

Sad it is, that I have not given much room to these wanderful Italian composer's who were the Genesis of the true classical form, which the German composer's and other in Europe have taken to a new level, I am 82-year's young today, and do enjoy the spiritual significance and perfect harmony of the Italian input well before the seventeen hundreds!
Such a beautiful and musical player... he plays in a simple and straightforward manner that I think this concerto needs, and his speeds are judged to perfection. I don't think you could hear a better performance.
It is absolutely wonderful!! But did you hear Haakon Stotijn? There is a record of this Dutch oboeplayer, absolutely stunning, heartbreaking!!
@@martinmeng100 - Tanks I will look out for it. I have heard him play in many other works but not the Marcello.
This is not a piece of Sacred music as some think. It's just a beautiful oboe concerto by Alessandro Marcello, an Italian composer. This is the kind of music that touches the soul. One of my favorite pieces of all times.
Maria, You are definitely an aficionado of baroque music. It is a very beautiful piece. I can listen to these type of concertos from many different composers of the world. Have a merry Christmas and a happy and safe holiday season.
Maria Fernandez-Yoos,
It's sacred to me.

Touches the soul but every time I hear it the pitch changes though it is permanently set at Normal.
This Alessandro Marcello piece is simply stunning- sadly, many people out there think it is a Bach piece!
The baroque oboe of Ponseele simply reaches perfection in this piece. I cannot decide myself between this and Bach's BWV 974 transcription in Gould's interpreration. Both are a supreme examples of the perfection of music. I'd like to have two brains just to be able to enjoy both of them simultaneously with full conciousness,
I've heard this piece many times on a modern oboe (it often appeared at musical auditions ;) but it absolutely works 100% better on a baroque oboe, and 1000% better with Ponseele's masterful playing.
Sublime!
Nobody ever played a Baroque oboe with better intonation than Ponseele
Yes.....BRAVO from Mexico!
Masterpiece! Absolutely, amazing performance!! Soloist - one of the best I have ever heard!!! Bravi
Grande A. Marcello. Bravi. Musica bellissima. Grazie.

I see where Handel got the inspiration for his Oboe concerto. Handel's is just a tad faster but you definitely hear the inspiration in his from this piece. Handel himself may have been sitting in a concert hall listening to this and thought "EUREKA!", THIS IS IT! He did study in Italy for a time and his music is known to be strongly influenced by Italian masters. This piece of music is without a doubt one of the most beautiful pieces for the Oboe ever created by a human mind.
