I was in the corner of the West Side that day and it was probably the worst violence I’d seen at Upton Park. I remember the corner flag incident so well. There was also rumours Chelsea had bribed a turnstile operator to open a gate at the back of the West Side for them to attack us, not sure if that actually happened. They were scary days and people got hurt. But football now is so vanilla and soulless. Tourists with half and half scarves and overpaid average players.
Mate the WESTSIDE was full of fucking head cases, they would of been anihillated,i went in one night game as a young 17 Southbank boy as it always looked lively especially as it was near away section & police box, but i wasn't ready, i was a boy among men & my bollocks dropped that night, i went in a boy & came out a man, il never forget that night as it also kicked off, may of been Newcastle or Sunderland ? we would sing WESTSIDE do your job from the Southbank when away fans were getting mouthy & they often obliged, we was younger in Southbank around 16 to 20, WESTSIDE was 20 up to 30, grown men, THE WESTSIDE, ONLY FOR THE CERTIFIED INSANE, so good i took the name 🇬🇧⚒
I was 14 when I attended this match with my uncle and some of his mates. We were standing just to the left of the goal, about 10 feet back from the pitch wall. I have no recollection of the flag incident, and we were quite close to there, but I do remember the Hammers fans attacking from the back of the stand, and I was ushered over the wall onto the pitch with other kids and older people until the police got the fighting under control. I even got my picture in the Sunday Mirror on the Westham pitch. No issues walking back to the tube.
I was at that Match! I was a USAF Staff Sgt. who fell in Love with "Real Football"! I used to stay with Friends in London at Weekends and go to as many Matches I could all over London. I'd always stand in the Home Terrace so no Aggro. I also let it be known I was a "Yank" and at 6'2 245 Lbs. I never got any. I believe I have some Pics of this Dust up!
I got locked out of this match, along with about 10,000 others. Before kick off time, some bloke was somehow at the top of the terrace above us and he'd found a gap under the roof where he shouted 'It's all going off in here' to us outside. I can tell you it was bloody nervy outside as little mobs, who'd also not got in, were roaming about. You didn't know who was who. I was determined to get in and waited towards the end when the gates opened'. I actually ended up amongst the home lot in the West Paddock down near the corner where all the trouble had been. We were probably on the worst run of results in Chelsea history in that season. And guess who was our manager at that time? Hammers hero, Geoff Hurst.
Same here didn’t get and probably glad I didn’t. It’s was well moody outside so went back to Ealing for a well earned rest. I remember a night game there when we won 0-1 that was also interesting night out.
I was at this game, valentines Day, I think? 4-0 to West Ham. It was a second division fixture, and I was in the West stand terrace the corner near the Chelsea. Maybe 1500 Chelsea in away section. What I remember was about 10 to 3, a line of green flying jackets coming out of the South bank entrance tunnel and infiltrating the Chelsea, trying to make their way to the back of the Southbank. However a lot of west ham supporters around me in the Westside started pointing out their mates and cheering which gave the game away, and Chelsea attacked. It was full on toe to toe as Chelsea's mob realised if West Ham got behind them, they would have the upper hand and force them down the terrace and out the entrance tunnel. The fighting continued for a good 2 or 3 minutes, but the sheer numbers of Chelsea forced the icf back down the terrace, by which time OB had formed a line between them. This sparked a pitch invasion in that corner from the westside, and Chelsea retreated to the back of the away section whilst OB dealt with the icf. It would have took a brave man to jump over that wall onto a stone terrrace and try to get through 2 lines of OB and at the Chelsea, who now realised this and started beckoning and singing, I remember the corner flag and a plastic stool (st johns ambulance? Or press?) getting thrown back and forth before ob cleared everyone away. It was a good laugh really, I was only 18 or 19 and I have to admit as a hammer, that it would have been different if the icf had got behind Chelsea......but, they got sussed out that day! After the game, we saw a bit of scrapping up queen's market, but police escorted fans on to tubes as far as I know. That's my memory of it anyway. Great times.
Chelsea never took a back step but West Ham certainly did. I was in the market after chasing West Ham everywhere. Was also at the queen before the match 👌 West Ham had a go in the sth bank but were quickly dealt with……cue the usual wh bu lls hit
@GoTellTheSpartans24 was you even there mate? You brought less than 2000 in this game, considering you had whole southbank 7,000 all ticket in March 78! You never really fared well at home or away with us from 67 till late 80s.! Used to enjoy our away fixture in your shed all nice and dry 👍🤣🤣
I think it was the excitement and intrigue that attracted us as school boys to football in the 70s me and my school mates now in our late 60s talk about our football going days like it was yesterday our memories are on point. Im 68 years old and i remember going to Upton park in the 70s i was still at Holland Park school at the time it was the most frightening experience ive had at going to football. You have to remember we were 14 ,15 at the time i saw Chelsea fans who were heroes to us as school kids like Eccles and his firm and a Chelsea mob from Stockwell and Battersea but they were not visible at this game .I know it changed in the 80s and 90s as Chelsea got more organized. One arm Babs never gets a mention but he was a very game top Chelsea man bk in the day. Our school boy mob was mixed with black and white boys who had each other's back but we were no match for men in their 20s and 30s so more often we had to leg it. Then talk about it at school on Monday West Ham was a serious mob in those days very serious.
@carltonbenjamin6688 Good post, mate. When I was at high school in 70s most of my mates were west ham or Chelsea, and your correct with the age thing, I would say back then average age of the shed was 15,16, 17, but a lot of the west ham lads were in their 20s, and that made a big difference back then. If a 'man' of 22 told you to "sling yer fackin hook, cos we're standing 'ere now," you'd get lost a bit lively, and I'd seen it happen many times. Have to add that we would argue back then who had the biggest mob, and I'll concede that honour went to Chelsea, especially outside London. The shed was impressive when it was in full swing back then. Great days, mate, gone forever.

I remember meeting at Fulham broadway. Best mob I’d ever seen going east. We held our own easily. We was well up for this game and it didn’t disappoint. Still have the meet up bit of paper. I got thrown out and taken down the tunnel
Rubbish. I was there at the front by the corner flag as a Chelsea fan in the place we were supposed to stand. There were zero West Ham fans in the Chelsea away end. West Ham fans did try to enter the area a few times. They came from other parts of the ground but they stood off when confronted by the police. There was very little actual fighting between fans in those days, it was all about bravado, a show of strength, but as soon as the police stood in the middle they backed off abusing and threatening the other group from behind the safety of having a police line in between them. The Headhunters never existed. When a few Chelsea fans were arrested in March 1986 one of them, a loner, was found to have made business cards with the name "Chelsea Headhunters on".
