I got an E46 320d a few weeks ago. Had a few basic mods with swirl flap, egr valve and some knock off coilovers and so far I think it's a good budget build. Loads have been done before so it's so good for the DIY build at home.
Keen to see how you guys go forward with the build.
just weld the subframe before everything else!
Very interesting that someone took this engine and try to modify it, i own, the same vavletronic engine the N42, if you change the valve seals and the timing kit, the engine it's indestructible :D and very cheap to maintain :D keep it up :D

Love the story from Gordon Murray on collecting cars where he explained that in the 8’s they’d take a standard 318i block, leave it outside to rust so it would get stronger and then push 1,200 hp through it whilst cooling it with ice. Insane…

N42/N46 is great when it runs ok :D I am looking forward how much will you get from it. People are not tuning this engine, they rather swap it to straight six m52/m54

They swap them because these engines aren't reliable :)
I believe if we really wanted to… valvetronic delete and itbs it could be a very good engine.

How did you manage to rev it upto 7000 rpm knowing the Valvetronic limitations?
Valvetronic control is not concern at wide open throttle.. linearising the control section is key for smooth operation although we can totally turn it off if need be.

-45 use that info how you will 😉 for the pops and bangs on these engines you know where to look
-25 etc in your ignition map doesn’t quite do it they need to be pulled back quite hard being an with tiny injectors
Just pulling ignition when fuel cut off delay maps are not present in the software is not doing it. Also cw is not a switch.
@@NVMotorsportUK strange iv never experienced this on e46s il have a look at a few that I have done in the past and can email you over a few iv done and see if theirs any alternative for you you guys know your stuff so I don’t doubt you at all some ecus are funny that way

When working on old 90s and early 200d cars sometimes extra steps have to be pulled 😂 romraider is your best friend when it comes to e46s and 36s

Valve seals 💀🤣 i have 316i with 1.8 this is the most common issue on this 4 cyl engines and this is a reason why i want to swap from n46 to m54
