- The Northman
Young Prince Amleth is on the cusp of becoming a man when his father is brutally murdered by his uncle, who kidnaps the boy’s mother. Fleeing his island kingdom by boat, the child vows revenge. Two decades later, Amleth is a Viking berserker raiding Slavic villages, where a seeress reminds him of his vow: avenge his father, save his mother, kill his uncle. Traveling on a slave ship to Iceland, Amleth infiltrates his uncle’s farm with the help of Olga, an enslaved Slavic woman - and sets out to honor his vow. From visionary writer-director Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse) comes an immersive Viking epic like no other featuring an ensemble cast including Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe , Björk.

The fact that he didn’t get an Oscar nom for the Lighthouse still baffles me to this day
Same such a unique performance and movie as well, same with Robert, he deserves an award for lighthouse if not for that then definitely Batman because he was amazing
Him notbwinning Oscar for that should be considered a crime.
Still not over it
shit like this is why everybody realizes the oscars are worthless
Given the pathetic state of Holywood, the fact there's still people vapidly defering to the oscars as a point of reference to determine what makes a good actor "still baffles me to this day."
"Godspeed Northman!"
-Willem Dafoe
"I'm something of a viking myself."
Also Willem Dafoe.
I feel Robert Eggers is destined to truly make Homer's The Odyssey...
Great fucking idea
I mean I think hes a to important of a director to work on a simpsons feature film
I would commit homicide to see this happen
@Ornithocheirus ssshhhh dont let them on to us
@@Mrmidknight-yx9pg As long as Eggers obeys the laws of thermodynamics.
Willem is such a warm and fuzzy guy and I love how much he loves his craft.
And directors love working with him
I love Willem’s. I had one living under my bed all summer once.
Late at night I’d hear a cigarette light up. “Are you still awake?” he’d ask
“Just checkin.”
great guy.
I love that a straight up legend like Willem Dafoe wanted to work with Eggers like that. Real recognize real. Long live Robert Eggers.
we are witnessing a legend in the making
Agree!!! Long live Robert!
Dafoe is one of the greatest.
THE greatest
willem dabest
Dafoe is such a well spoken and intelligent legend. What a blessing this man is to to the acting world and the film industry as a whole 👏
Just watched The Northman today. In regards to Dafoe’s character, everything he said is true. There’s no fat to the character, and that’s a good thing. He barely has any screen time in the two and a half hours of the film, but his role is pivotal to establishing Amleth’s character motivations. And yeah, the character was 100% made for Dafoe. He even has a bit of the same humor from The Lighthouse, and it’s the only bit of humor in the whole film, so it stands out.
Overall, a great pick by Eggers and a great character for Dafoe. Small, but important.
"You dine like a king!" comes to mind lol
Imagine a guy telling you how he will make your work more appreciated and then telling the world how brilliant you are for hiring him. Dafoe is a good man and a great actor.
Protect Robert Eggers at all costs. This man is going to go down as one of the greatest director of all time. Blows my mind how good his first three movies are-and for how young he is too-he has so much ahead of him. I only consider his talent to be rivaled by the likes of Kubrick.
He was my favorate charater in the film even though it was breif. His portail as fool priest and wiseman was perfect.
I go into movies knowing very little about them and I try my best not to watch trailers because they spoil everything, and seeing him in the Northman actually genuinely surprised me
@@nepdisc3722 he was very good in it and channeled a loki like character very well
As soon as he jumped up into the frame, I had a big stupid smile on my face.
Willem Dafoe was great in The Northman, such an interesting and cool small role that had a lot of impact.
As someone who fell in love with Platoon and the Boondock Saints I’m loving the wave of appreciation for Willam Dafoe lately
Seen him in wild at heart? It's great
Willem Dafoe is a great underrated actor.
The Oscar doesn't deserve Willem
I love hearing artists talking about their crafts with so much grace, passion, love and respect. Willem Dafoe is certainly one of them
God I love willem Defoe. It doesn't matter what he is talking about, it's somehow always interesting. I honestly believe he could tell a story about how he experimented with different paints to see which dried fastest, and I would still listen to the whole story.
He always speak very genuinely and with modesty, no matter if he describes cinematography or his drip)
Imagine getting this praise from a legend like Willem Dafoe. I'd retire immediately after hearing this.
“You know I’m something of a Northman myself.”
One of the truest actors alive. Dafoe's such a professional in every sense of the word and it's always a pleasure to hear him speak about what he obviously loves doing.
the actor of all time 🔥🔥
It's a pleasure to hear an intelligent actor who can express himself coherently. Bravo.
The Northman is over 2 hours and it's so unique that you don't even realize it. I really hope they release a director's cut. #TheNorthman
He was fantastic in The Northman. A 10th century jester/mystic. Perfect role for him and he knocked it out of the park as always...
"Hello Puppy!"
"Out am I?"
Man I loved his voice. :D
His character was so raw it echoed through out the film like he was there the whole time watching. Willem such a legend
Absolutely LOVE this gentleman and all of his performances. What an awesome path he has chosen and built in terms of acting... 🙏🏽
A true legend
a legend for sure
Love Willem!!! He's a good old Cheesehead!
It's amazing what can produced when the director, producer, cinematographer, collection of actors, and all of the production team actually care passionately about working together to create a story of quality.
Willem was perfect for that roll. He is always fun to watch. Everyone was great in this movie especially Willem and Ethan Hawk. They are both real actors.
can’t believe my family didn’t wanna watch the lighthouse because they didn’t care for Dafoe, he’s consistent and great featured for intense roles
He was absolutely fantastic in this movie
No one beats his energy
One of my favorite actors.
Ngl I was a bit disappointed to hear Dafoe and Pattinson didn’t get along with each other to the point that most of their scenes were filmed separately. Watching The Lighthouse the two actors have such good chemistry.
What a treasure Willem is.
He had such a small role, but it was so important for Amleth's character development and his initiation as an ulfhedinn. I really wish we could've seen more of him, but his scenes were enough for me to really want to see it again and digest his role
Northman and Lighthouse are true film! Instant classics.
You just love how he speaks about acting. :)
It's a delight to listen to Dafoe talk especially about his craft for which he has such passion.
From being a great comic book villain brought to life, to a detective in the irish town of Boston, to a possessed shaman warlock jester!
Dafoe must take at least 5 shots for a single take, very theatrical given the time constraints directors are given.
Also kind of nice detail Dafoe's character had, he basically tests the loyalty of everyone to anyone he makes jests of, hence why the Uncle became enraged when the King was merely amused, like everyone else.
I'd like to give props to Ethan hawke too, he makes a huge impact too, despite barely being in the film - it's the most I've liked him in a film
I can't imagine anyone else fulfilling the seer's role than Willem Dafoe he's just fucking awesome.
He has a vocation.
And a real passion for that vocation.
I really love his acting and him as a person. He makes movies interesting and special.
I have endless respect for Willem as an actor. His work is top quality.
Little coverage = fewer shots. Mark of a director who knows what he/she is doing and has a vision they can see clearly.
Absolutely. I think it was Hitchcock who said there's "only one correct place" to put the camera.
the most epic movie I’ve ever seen, something I’ll always remember. bless dafoe
the lighthouse is one of my favourite movies, i really cant wait to see the northman
His scenes were great, him playing to the kings gođi and court poet was an unexpected treat. Which was valuable in creating the immersive experience. I'll go see the film again certainly, i enjoyed it very much.
One of the GREATEST actors of my time
I love watching Dafoe talk about acting and I’m not even an actor or anything myself. The passion is just there though and I love it
Great film, great performance as usual from Willem
possibly one of the most based humans walking the earth & certainly one of my favourites
Yeah. It's good to see how he enjoys his profession. :)
Eggers is building a core group of extremely talented actors
Willem is such a master at his craft. I cant wait to see his performance in this.
I can feel your love of the profession and the industry and what's still good about it
what a beautiful human being, and kaleidoscopically, stratospherically amazing actor.
It is not the sets. It is the obsession with the historical data that is available and forming it into something serious and cohesive, however crazy. The Northman is a great work of art. It just is. The Viking fad, many wanted to cash in. But this movie just wanted to go to the root of what is possible to know about that period. It is eternal. And greatly to be respected, just wow.
Willem is the best!
His narration in the "troykhar" sword scene was soooo amazing
it is spelt Draugr, and it really was amazing!
@@HladgerdKissinger thank you for the correction
Northman was a masterpiece.
Nice to see a high-end actor acting and speaking like a normal person
Lol, William still gives me Thomas Wake here. I love it.
Why is Willem Dafoe so fucking cool? Like I’ve never seen a clip of him being anything less than awesome.
It's funny, Eggers says in an interview that the process was quite challenging working with Dafoe, despite Dafoe's generosity in these interviews
I just recently saw THE NORTHMAN. It reminded so much ov myself and teachings ov a Hopi. it was great. Up there with Conan The Barbarian, The Beastmaster, Highlander and The 13th Warrior for me anyway.
i love the norse-slavic threads here, norse and slavic people have been interacting for a very long time, sometimes collaboratively sometimes antagonistically. As a person of norse and slavic descent this is rad
He sounds very genuine
He did such a great job in the Northman. Even tho it was a small role.
DAMN I wish he was in more of the movie!!!!
What an amiable feller!
Though beyond the sceeen, I’ve always read him a simpleton.
What a gem!
i didnt even know it was him until i heard the voice, even though he wasnt a huge part, he was incredible
This my all time favorite movie just below Lord of the Rings and Gangs of New York.
Solid choices
I had forgotten about TGoN , takes me back
the ritual scene was absolutely bonkers
I didn't expect it, but now I can't stop seeing Dafoe and Viggo Mortensen as brothers. (I think most casting directors probably read this comment section. You are welcome.)
Dafoe was great in that film.
Northman definitely delivered on the theme of the north.
Russia, Iceland, Norway… North Atlantic, Baltic. Very Northern places 😎
The character you played were very real men good sir! You nailed it as well! #Seiðr
One Take Willie!
I want someone to talk about me the way that Willem talks about Robert Eggers
Imagine Dafoe speaking highly of you. That’s a win id say.
Eggers is as brilliant a filmmaker as Dafoe is an actor.
People need to stop sleeping on The Northman, and Robert Eggers in general.
He's like becoming Elias again in some ways in that new role.
Despite his long and storied career, it's nice to see that hasn't gone to Willem Dafoe's head...
His character was awesome. Wish he had more screen time, but the story played out well
Northman was awesome. Wish the ending was a little different though. Also wish they had more Dafoe!!
great movie, love how unwoke it is
RIP LEGEND
Dafoe, i have to see it .
"Alas poor Yorrick - I knew him, Horatio,..."
I remember the video where a guy wanted to give him a dollar, Because he thought William was homeless. 🤣
❤🔥🔥🔥
Sorry I am late, work was murder.
I’d like to see Defoe as the Padisha Emperor in Dune Part 2 or Ian McClellan
His character isn't named Yorick, but trust me he's Yorick. Alas, poor Yorick!
He must be protected at all cost
I certainly hope it's better than "The Lighthouse" to put it mildly...
