    I really respect your decision to make your recovery your own and to not try and be perfect or follow any trends. You eat REAL food (not "protein" cookies, brownies made with chickpeas and fake sugar, or perfectly macro-specific meals, etc.) and that's real life. There are no recovery foods - there are just foods, and I think that often gets lost a lot with other people trying to recover. And while it's great to see a FDOE at times, there is no substitute for professional help because it's so different for each person. As for exercise, that's my big downfall and obsession, so your words kind of kicked my flat ass. Long story short, you rock and keep killing it, woman.

      Abby Heugel
      I’m so with you on that!!!
      She is so great!!!!
      These days of macro, calorie, clean eating make people to forget how to eat which is not complicated if you just eat a lot of variety of real, wholesome tasty foods that aren’t modified, fortified, sugar free, carb free, protein bars....
      Just normal not diet/ fitness related crap
      The funny part that those foods aren’t going to help you to be any healthier or happier just keep you in diet, restrictive mind

      Thanks so much, I want to keep choosing and role modelling healthy eating.... And by healthy I mean eating all foods and not restricting... But yes, it would be too much pressure for me to film EVERYTHING I eat. Hopefully it is helpful anyway. Keep challenging and not giving in to your thoughts xxx

    Once a week! How will I cope! (Just kidding, no pressure, your recovery and life is most important!) Honestly I can't tell you how much you've been helping me with my recovery, you appeared on youtube right as I was feeling like giving up and genuinely you've been the force that has got me through it. I'm now a 'healthy' weight, and yesterday I felt so fat and was thinking 'i'm restored now it's horrific and I hate it, time to restrict again!' and then I thought about all the things you've said about sitting with discomfort and pushing through the bad days and feeling the bad feelings but continuing anyway for your ultimate goal, and I went and got myself a frappucino (don't think I'd ever have had one if it weren't for you!) and got on with it! So thank you 💓

    • @megsyrecovery191
      @megsyrecovery191  6 лет назад +3

      YES YES YES! This is wonderful to hear. Well done you. Aren't they fabulous! And that's exactly it, that's the message my psychologist gives me all the time. It's not going to feel comfortable, but if you don't push through regardless then the alternative is a life of AN. NO THANK YOU!

      I'm glad I'm not alone!! I'm seeing the weight come on my body and am having a really hard time with it. I've got events coming up in these next few months where I'll be going out for weekends with friends and I keep thinking "well you've got to stay thin for that, you don't want them to think you're letting yourself go!" But like................... what?!?! Who the eff cares!!! Everything will be fine! Ugh. Got to keep pushing through! Thank you for sharing!!

    I love when I see your videos post! You are an inspiration and I do love the style of your vlogs. The FDOE videos can also be a slippery slope for us who are starting ED recovery, because we see all those foods folks in recovery are eating, salivate over them, only wish we could eat all that food (sugar, carbs..things I restrict), and then dream about that food, only to then restrict and tell myself "that can never be me". Cycle continues. So your style is SO great! Don't change a thing - you're doing amazing!

    • @megsyrecovery191
      @megsyrecovery191  6 лет назад

      I totally agree with that. We're all on our own path, so I hope I'm showing good eating and a good attitude to recovery, but allowing people to get on with their own approach and stage. it's a hard one to get right as food is obviously such a focus for us! Thanks for the message though x

    I love your waffles! Please keep right on waffling...there is a lot of wisdom in them. I think sitting with crappy feelings is one of the bravest, and most difficult challenges of all, but it has to be done to do away with eating disorders. I was intermittent fasting because (I told myself) it was healthy for my body. I even defended it to a recovery youtuber who challenged it on her channel (I need to apologize to her!) In reality, although it may have loads of health benefits, it was just another way for me to restrict. Anorexia is very sneaky, and it can come up with all sorts of rationalizations for disordered behavior. Bravo for all the hard work you are doing!

    • @megsyrecovery191
      @megsyrecovery191  6 лет назад

      God totally get this. So not your fault, AN weaves its way so deeply into our thoughts that we think they are our own thoughts and we thing they're rational, when really they're totally disordered. I have had thoughts that I thought were "recovery motivated", but now I've moved on a bit I can see how disordered they were. At least you recognise it now. Recovery has to have NO restrictions whatsoever, in my mind. Or you'll never be free!

    omg finally! I looooove your opinion on "what I eat in a day" videos! so rare to hear this and exactly what I'm thinking all the time. they are so popular and can so easily be misinterpreted.
    people ignore how different we all are at that specific time in our lives.
    you are very inspiring. it's so great to see you are doing so well. lots of love 💕

  • @joycooper4023
    @joycooper4023 6 лет назад +3

    Love this! Listening to this kicks me in the butt. Makes me see how my thoughts are still so disordered. I have toe tipped into recovery too and then backed off. I always feel like I can do it on my own and I think a big part of that is being so shameful of the illness. I only talk about it online. Ive had therapy appointments set up and then I cancel. My ED thoughts get me thinking that oh you can do this on your own. You just need to eat! But it’s not that simple and you really put it out there and expose it. I hope you never feel any pressure to do anything different on your channel and that you keep doing what helps YOU.

    • @megsyrecovery191
      @megsyrecovery191  6 лет назад

      Yes, it has to be directly addressed & challenged. EDs never just get better in their own & you can’t just want them away. It’s ALL about actions & challenging & breaking cycles 😘

    Thank you so much for answering a lot of my questions! You are doing a very great job and are not waffling at all! You are saying very helpful things. So if time and your wellbeing allows it, keep them coming! 😀 I totally understand the boundaries you are setting around meal plans and not filming a whole day of eating, you are still in recovery too and it's good that you feel where your boundaries are! I like what your psychologist said about connecting your WHY during the process of eating, but also doing things mechanical and distracting yourself from it helps a lot. I'm so happy that your mood, work and social life are improving. I feel so much digestive discomfort and that makes it sometimes very hard to go out of the house. The pain distracts me a lot when I am with other people and I can't focus on other things than the pain. I'm also feeling full all the time, no hunger signals at all. I'm glad to hear that improvement is possible! Good luck again this week with your recovery path, you are doing awesome! ❤️

    So your vlog from yesterday had gotten me thinking about why I don't do nice things for myself. So I've made a conscious effort to make good lunches and good breakfast and dinners...this morning I made myself an amazing veggie omelette-tasted so much like my favorite omelette from a restaurant I love back home. It tasted amazing and was such a wonderful and enjoyable way to start my day. You're inspiring me in my own recovery-keep at it!

    100% agree that your meal plan is something personal however i wanted to now how much "freedom" you have with it. What i mean is can you pick whatever you want for lunch or everything is already decide in advance or maybe a few options for each meal snack... what is most helpful for you?

    • @megsyrecovery191
      @megsyrecovery191  6 лет назад +1

      At first I had it all defined, because I couldn't cope with choice very well. Now I kind of have options which is so good because ti gives me flexibility if say people are going out for lunch or whatever. I have also had to break away from being terrified of going a calorie over the plan, which has also been very freeing

    • @eleonoreconstant
      @eleonoreconstant 6 лет назад

      yeah makes sense!! I ve had such a hard time trying not to count cal but seriously, not counting makes eating more high caloric food/eating more way easier I think (maybe not at first but when you see it doenst really impact your weight then it gets so much easier! :) ) Seriously you could post videos several times a day i d still want more videos! ;) but you re right focus on taking care of yourself and your recovery!

    Ahh Meg/Megs/Megsy (not sure which you prefer!); you're videos are so helpful and inspiring. I have a very similar story to yours in terms of the life span of my anorexia/ relapse struggle, as well as the very specific thought patterns that you talk about in the here and now! I now have a 1 year old daughter and feel the weight of the world in responsibility to be a good role model for her, so hearing your insights and realising how much they ring true to me is so incredibly helpful. Can't thank you enough for sharing this! Although, out of curiosity, what made you decide to start a recovery channel on RUclips? Was it seeing others like Jen Brett doing it? Did you/ do you have concerns that people who don't already know about your struggles seeing these videos (e.g. like people from work)? I am always so reluctant to let people know of my ED past/present as I feel like they might assume things about me or judge me... OR even pity me which would make me feel so uncomfortable. How do your family/friends and even your treatment team feel about your RUclips videos? Regardless, I definately appreciate them, if we were ever in the same country (or even on the same side of the world - haha - Im in New Zealand!), i feel like we would have such a laugh hanging out together. All the best to you and yours! X

    • @megsyrecovery191
      @megsyrecovery191  6 лет назад +1

      Ahhhh I really want to go to New Zealand! Maybe one day. I haven't told anyone (friends or family) about my recovery account yet. I was just trying it for a couple of weeks and then it's kind of taken off and I've enjoyed it and it's helping me. I have always been quite embarrassed about being ill, and hidden it and I was SO scared that people might find my channel. But seeing how much it is helping other people and also has helped me, that kind of makes it all worth while and makes me feel less embarrassed if some one does find it. It is a big part of me really, and I can't help that it's happened, and I am doing everything to get well now and use it to do some good in the world. So I hope people can admire that if they do find it.

      I feel like "coming out" so to speak would be a MASSIVE commitment to long term recovery for me. A kind of "no going back there" move. I think that'll be next. I am so glad you have your daughter as motivation. I can only imagine how much that must mean for recovery and yeh like you say wanting to be a good role model. I guess also wanting to be present for her and give her all of you. Wishing you both all the best, lots of love xxxxx

    You’re so motivated in your recovery which motivated me as well 💪🏻! Love your positivity❤️! Please stay strong & do remember recovery is worth it! 🌟 I had been challenging my fear food by eating out with family everyday, I felt so free & happy for the first time in 2 years 😆! And I tried not to weigh myself because I don’t want the ED voice says like “oh never eat that or that ever again , they make you FAT! “ . Thank you for sharing about your life and your journey so far. Its nice to have context and to get to know you! I was wondering, since you said that Brendan has been a real support for you, whether he would be willing to come on camera with you and for you both to discuss what has been useful and what has worked for both someone facilitating recovery and the person themselves? I also wanted to ask how this recovery is different from your previous recovery and what are you putting in place this time to prevent a relapse? Cheers!

    • @megsyrecovery191
      @megsyrecovery191  6 лет назад

      I will do a vlog on the relapse at some point, & like what caused it & how to prevent it in future. Just want to do a bit more work with my psychologist first. I don’t think Bren would feel that comfortable with that which is a shame, maybe one day he will catch me recording again & have an unplanned chat. I know reading a lot helped him to understand & talking to me. He prepares all my meals as well which helps to take some of the decisions away from me & loosens my control in the kitchen

You have made me feel that actually I’m not a weirdo and that other people are having the same distorted way of thinking and at the age of 39 I feel like I should be grown up enough to be a proper adult what ever that is , so keep it up I applaud you from the bottom of my heart, your videos are sooooooo helpful ❤️👍😃

    Probiotics really help me with my stomach problems, and things like prunes and apples :) and yes it just takes time for your body to get used to the different foods and learn to digest them... one thing is you don`t have the bacteria to do it and enzymes! Apple cider vinegar with some water or spoon full alwayyyysss helps me when I feel to full, sick or bloated after a meal :)

    That breakfast looked delicious! You spoke of a meal plan, so I'm curious... do you follow a meal plan to keep yourself accountable on getting enough calories, or to make sure you don't go over your calories? I'm just starting this journey without a therapist or dietician and am intuitive eating (I guess) and feel like I am eating everything. I live in a very small town but I would like to find someone to go to for help, I know no one here is a professional. :) I'm not extremely underweight, it was more of overexercise and very restrictive eating. I'm afraid I'll just keep eating and eating!! Peanut butter for dayssss!!!

    • @megsyrecovery191
      @megsyrecovery191  6 лет назад +2

      I guess I have the plan to get some help, because left to myself I don't make the right decisions (yet). And obviously I don't know how much you are eating but 1) our head will always tell us it's more than it is, and 2) not surprising if you want to eat EVERYTHING after restrictive eating, because your body and mind are both crying out for food! Is there some one you could travel to go and see, if you want some advice on diet and meal plan to follow?

    Hi! You are a great help in my recovery. I'm really struggling with the weight gain. Last week I gained, as was planned, but I'm really having a hard time sticking to my mealplan, knowing I will gain, because that's what happened last week. I know I have to gain, but in my head I am freaking out. I don't want to gain weight anymore and I wonder why I can't just stabalize at this weight, even though I'm underweight. And I'm also scared that all the weight gain will go to my stomach area and I won't have a nice figure and flat stomach when I gain. These things really keep me from sticking to my weight gain plan..
    My question: Is the weight you gain distributing evenly over your body of is it all going to your stomach area and if so, how do you cope with that?

    • @megsyrecovery191
      @megsyrecovery191  6 лет назад

      I’d try & focus on what weight gain is bringing for you hun. What does it allow you to do? What symptoms have gotten better? Like for me I love having better hair, not being freezing, having more energy, sleeping, having less rigidity in my head. I’m scared of weight gain too & what my body will look like, but then I also want to live my life & im sick of being consumed by thoughts of food & weight

    Hi! I just wanted to say thank you so much for all of your videos- they honestly have helped me immensely in my own recovery. I wanted to ask if you could ever give some advice on going out for meals? I'm starting a new outpatient treatment in March and it's a day program- part of the program consists of going out for meals around 4 times a week. However I still find eating out such a struggle and i tend to feel the need to compensate if i do go out. Sorry if I'm waffling ahaha but yeah just wondering on advice on how to eat out but make sure you continue with your eating plan etc. Thank you again!!
    ALSO i adore your cats omg!! much love from Australia xx

    • @megsyrecovery191
      @megsyrecovery191  6 лет назад

      healing banana hi, yeh I really struggled with this but now I’m brilliant at it (if I can say that myself). I know I can eat anything on the menu, go out unplanned, & never compensate. I don’t have a magic answer on how to get there though. I just had to do it, feel anxious, panic about having “more calories” than I would have had at home, think I was getting fat, wanting to compensate but not letting myself.... it’s really hard at first; but you just have to do it & repeat it for it to get better & become a comfortable experience. I actually love it now!

    I know you cant share your meal plan but you also seem to still be able to choose what youre feeling you want to eat. So how is it set up? I want that kind of plan where i dont have to count bc i get obsessed. So does it tell you ok breakfast: x amount of carbs...x amount of fats..etc and you get to pick what that is?

    • @megsyrecovery191
      @megsyrecovery191  6 лет назад +1

      Wow no not at all. I don’t even count calories, never mind fats & carbs. Everything is balanced, so like meals are fats & protein & carbs & then I can be flexible ish within that. I used to have the same thing every day & stick to my plan to the letter, but now I’m just so much more relaxed. If I have something more calories than another thing I just don’t mind. But that’s just come with time & weight gain. So yeh, it’s a rough plan & my dietician does the calories for me. Hope that helps

    Ask your health professional about taking apple cider vinegar or bitters before a meal. It helps stimulate HCL acid in the stomach which is what helps break down and digest food. It was a huuge help for me in the beginning phase of increasing my intake with discomfort.

    • @cindyk2088

      It’s a tincture of naturally bitter herbs that can help your body produce digestive “juices” before eating. Many health food stores will carry different blends!

    I wouldn't say no to a drink either but I find it so hard not to compensate! It's like I literally see the calories swimming in my glass of wine and my brain goes "well you can't have all that food to go with it you little greedy piggy" - it's so stressful! Have you experienced that as well? how do you cope with it?

    • @megsyrecovery191
      @megsyrecovery191  6 лет назад

      yes I do, alcohol is a current challenge for me because I want to be able to drink and I love wine but I do get those thoughts of "well you need to make up for it". I'm currently challenging it with just totally going against it and doing the opposite. It's hard, but I'm doing it to get to a point where I can just enjoy a glass of wine and not see it as something which needs to be substituted in x

    It's SO interesting how the stomach tells the brain whether we're full or not. There are so many nerves in the gut its literally like a second brain. There's also the microbiome which are the good bacteria which produce chemicals to say 'more fooood' or 'OOOH I'm stuffed'. And there's the hormones as well AND there's stretch mediated responses, which basically see how much your stomach has expanded and then relay that to the brain. It's SUPER COMPLICATED and there's all these systems at work, which is probably why the hunger signals are a bit effed up in recovery.
