@TheThinkingAtheist, Believe me, brother, what you do matters. I'm watching this almost a year after it was broadcast, yet it still has MUCH relevance. Since I accepted the fact that i'm atheist, many of my friends have actually questioned their beliefs... & are moving toward a secular and even atheist viewpoint. Thank you, from the bottom, top & sides of my heart. You are a GOOD person. :)

I'm a recent new listener to your podcasts, and I'm enjoying the hell out of them.
I love The Atheist Experience to death, but what I think feels so unique about your show is how incredibly down to earth and relatable it is with some domestic issues that other shows deal very little with.
I've fairly recently come out to my mom about my atheism. I don't think she's completely accepted it. There was some crying, wondering "what she did wrong", but we've grown pretty civil on the subject.

The Whatever Show was awesome! (More, please.) And don't worry if you can't make as many shows-- the shows you do make get copied and spread far and wide and will be viewed for many years. Others will learn from your clips and make make their own and spread the information further. You are planting many seeds that will bloom and produce many more seeds.

Hey TTA! I am 17 years old from Denmark, and I have a hobby of writing poems, short prosas and what not. About a month ago I started a blog on blogspot just to see if my work would attract any attention or maybe even a solid fan base since I there have been people telling me how really good I am at writing and rhyming. I just wanted to say that creative people don't need religion to do what they do. I play music as well, and it's pure feelings and entertainment value that drives me!

Not only are catholic schools publicly funded in Canada but they are often BETTER funded then the public schools.
The public high schools I attended were struggling financially. My younger sister attends a catholic high school (same district) which has flat screen TVs in every class room, it's own wind turbine, new text books EVERY year, and so on. I can't even remember half of what she's told me about that place.

Seth likes music that takes him on a journey. Ever listened to Oxygene? Early electronic-generated. Jean-Michael Jarre. You'll very likely have heard parts of it, but the full set is six parts and just under fourty minutes long. Instrumental (despite no actual instruments) and without vocals. Somewhat similar is of course the Tubular Bells set by Mike Oldfield. You'd likely recognise it as the theme from The Exorcist. It's not stuff you'll hear on the radio. I'd love to find more along these lines.

You and Sam Harris are my top 2 speakers on the subject. I can listen to either of you for several hours. Followed closely by Christopher Hitchens. Then Dawkins, Dennet, Barker, and Thunderf00t round out my study. (Also, on the subject of evolution, I resonate with Kenneth Miller's teaching, although he is not atheist).

More than eight years after this broadcast, I will echo some of the comments I have read. I am glad you didn't stop completely. I am similar to the message from a RUclips user that you read. Although I wasn't raised in a religious home as I think that user said, I was raised in a home where my parents didn't try to make either my sister or myself believe the way they did. From early on in my childhood, I remember hearing my father refer to TV evangelists as "those churchy mother fuckers," but never mocked my sister who was attending church from an early age...on her own. She and my brother in law still are every Sunday "bible thumpers," but neither she nor my father mock the other's thoughts on the existence of gods. I think my mother is more of a believer than he is, but neither of them would care if I told them "I don't believe in god." They definitely wouldn't react in the way your family has with you or the way a number of callers' families. I am thankful for that, but still think it is necessary for people like you and Aron Ra to do what you do to let them know it's okay to be the person they want to be and not what their parents/family think they should be.

I understand what you mean about the music. I have a friend who plays bass in a Christian metal band, and I've also become friends with his bandmates. I enjoy their music because they're really good musicians. One of my friends put it really good; "They're too good to be a Christian band." I've gone to their concerts all the time, and I've found some people there that, even though they're in christian bands, they're really good musicians.

The Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard, is an Atheist.
Whilst the Prime Minister of Australia is the leader of the the party of that wins the most seats in the the parliament, elections in Australia are increasingly about the leader of the party. Gillard's Atheism was well publicised in the lead up to the election which her party won in August of 2010.

Congratulations. That must have been difficult to have kept your skepticism about your family's religion within for as long as you did. If you don't mind me asking, how long did it take you for you to come out to your family and what was the initial factor that had you questioning your faith?

You're into orchestral soundtrack music? Awesome! That's my favorite kind of music too! I don't really know any other "soundtrack fans", so it's great to finally hear there's someone else out there. :)
I also greatly enjoy Verdi's Requiem, which could easily be described as religiously inspired, but the fact is Verdi was a nonbeliever! It just shows you don't need to be religious to enjoy - or compose - religious music.

@DarkOrion09 Well, what I was agreeing with and/or referring to was that atheists HAVE a community whether we admit it or not. It's not so much that any of us purposely TRY to "group" atheists, but becuz we DO share a lack of belief, make the same arguments in debates and, often times, go thru similar experiences due to our atheism, there is a comradery amongst us and I don't think we should be so allergic to the idea.

After 45 yrs of being an atheist, I have had to argue and debate thousands of theists everywhere I go. It is very tiring but what keeps my juices flowing is that the outcome is worth all the work and frustration. Eventually, these folks who refuse to reason or connect with their logical mind, have to come to one conclusion, no gods. Just like Easter Bunnies, Mother Geese, Tooth Fairies, Santa, etc.they are all fairytales made up by Man. No matter how frustrating, this needs to happen.

I know I've said this before, but living in northern California, we don't seem to see the kind of 'Anti-Atheist' sentiment that seems to be in a major part of the rest of the country and it's eye opening to get the perspectives from this podcast. Here in Silicon Valley, the Bible Thumpers are very much in the minority. This podcast brings a different reality to the table, especially if I had to move to a different part of the country.

@jmlew ... (cont.) The 5 years might seem fast, but I don't recall having much trouble making the transition. The tough period Seth went thru... I didn't have that. I think it's because I was always a skeptic by nature... the doubts were always a part of me, as I said before. In my case, it was just a matter of literally growing up then applying logic to the entirety of religion, and not just the most obviously questionable parts... I couldn't cherry pick anymore.

@Mogley52 What order do you speak of? Perhaps that our Milky Way Galaxy is on a crash course with our space relative, the Andromeda Galaxy? How about all the Galaxies that have already collided? What about all those imploding stars that destroy it's surrounding? Black holes that suck atoms out of existence? How about the fact that our universe is inexplicably expanding at a rapid rate in which the speed is increasing rather than decreasing? Is this your idea of order?

The guy that spoke of being a minister for 20 years is very much like me.
I lost my christian faith by reading the bible. My family are all Christians and I don't tell them that I am not because I am sure it would be a disaster. They want to believe for the same reasons as most others and that is it is spoon fed to them from childhood.
Nothing I as one person can say to them would change their position.
Most people don't know that they have been conditioned to believe.

@mornmeril I agree with you, if our skills are provided by God and not the creativity of our own minds, then what's the point? And what happends then when I write something offensive to theism? Is it still God then?
There are so many points upon the chain of faith between Christianity and me, like this one, that just made me go "no way, this makes no sense anymore" which at the end broke that chain completely. - And the number of those logical flaws has only increased as time has passed
