I supported Collingwood . But my heart was with Fitzroy . I played for Fitzroy districts on the old ground. I will never forget how my second team was devoured shame AFL
Lived in Fitzroy flats and played 4 Fitzroy Juniors in 73 and 74 with Kevin Murray and Father Fitzpatrick as coaches..we used to sing strive for victory not fight for victory .I note Fitzroy Cricket Club still use Strive as well . great time 2 b alive
@aj j Very good. Yes soccer is the biggest and most followed football in the world which I have a lot of respect for. Unfortunately the best Australian players play offshore denying kids the chance to watch their heroes play or meet regularly. Soccer has good junior participation rates in Australia but they never translate to ongoing support/ participation like Australian Rules football in this country. Soccer will never be as popular as Australian Rules as 'our game' is made for the Australian populace. I also note you support Man U but where is the Socceroos logo if you are so supportive of Australian soccer. The reality is you follow a game that is popular somewhere else.
Paul Murray go to www.vafa.com.au and you’ll find that fitzroy is playing there they’re playing in camberwell I think round 1 they’re in grade b and the women are playing at the Brunswick street oval in round one on the 6th of April
They should play this at least once for heritage sake, during the heritage round or similar to it, when they play in Melbourne. And maybe Brisbane Bears song in heritage round possibly played at Carrara, as a one-off. Would be great.
@@richo171169 yep There's some similarities to Melbourne's theme song with Fitzroys imo, moreso with the theme music. Brisbanes is very different I find
To be fair brisbane gave fitzroy everything but the name.even then the buisness name was Brisbane fitzroy footy club and north reneged on part of the merger deal
I stop sucking up for likes ok it happened they merged the lions got everything out of the deal all the bears got was the Brisbane title the lions got the emblem the lions got the colours hell they even got the song it sounds almost identical to this so honestly grow a brain
i followed fitzroy from when i was born up until the end of 1996 when they merged with brisbane and for people who don't know fitzroy still plays they play in the VAFA in the c grade
Yes the music score is the same as La Marseillaise. Does Brisbane or Fitzroy have a connection to France? Is the reason for the music a lack of imagination? Sorry if that sounds mean.
@@58Herm as far is I’ve read. There’s no connection. The player/s in charge of writing the song obviously liked the tune of La Marseillaise. Brilliant national anthem btw. Hence why the Fitzroy/ Brisbane songs are so bloody good
There was no finals played when Essendon won the flag by default by finishing on top, Fitzroy won the first official 'Grand Final' when finals were first played the very next season
Was a Roys fan from 1982 to the end in 96. Went to most home games until 1990 when I moved away from Melbourne. Saw them win the Reserves Flag against Geelong in 1989. Have many great memories of when it was football and not the farce the AFL in their infinite wisdom have turned the game into. Was the best ball game by far in those days and always looked forwards to the week end either going to a Roys game or watching on TV, not that the Roys were on much. What the AFL did to them was a disgrace. Could not even be bothered watching the Grand Final this year with all the crap that went on earlier in the season. Football has become too PC and is run by idiots. When I am asked today who my team is I say Fitzroy.
At least today's football is real football, not the off their heads drunk thugs that you used to watch. Football today is played by attacking the ball not king hitting blokes behind play and being a bunch of spineless cowards, get with the times.
Rabman 1996 Today's football is not real footy. Modern footy can easily be labelled as "Australian Rules handball" at times. Although the modern game is less thuggish, crowds are slightly better behaved, it is better marketed, and grounds are in better condition, the game has less flair and it is more robotic. Gone are most of the long kicking and high marking. There is too much chipping and handballing, more emphasis on strategy, and players are more panicky now. The past had its share of brutes but there were also an abundance of players with astute footy brains.
I’ve been a Roy’s fan from 88 to 96 and went to my first game I think my mum said it was fitzroy vs Carlton when I was only a couple of days old and we still go see fitzroy play at the Brunswick Street oval during the season even though they are called the fitzroy reds they use fitzroy’s theme and jersey it’s great you get to know them like a family even the president of the club comes out every game and talks to you
Mate honestly the Roy Boys were the worst run club in footy, they had heaps of debt and couldn't stay afloat on their own. They are lucky the AFL stepped in or there would be no Lions in the AFL and Brisbane would still be the bears. You are lucky you've still got the song, the name and the guernsey.
No idea who or what Fitzroy was till a few days back when I started watching 'Jack Irish'. Loved it, loved the song, came here to enjoy the song..........
fitzroy have won 8 premierships in the VFL/AFL system mate, they were only cut due to financial reasons because they were going through a premiership drought, don't see teams like melbourne, western bulldogs or St Kilda getting dropped out and they haven't won in a long time
Fitzroy made the 1986 VFL Preliminary Final despite Rumors of the Lions either Merging with Melbourne or Relocating to Brisbane That Year, it was also the Beginning of the End for them in the Big Time Too as Financial Troubles along with a Lack of Permanent Home saw Fitzroy's Performance's Dwindle til it reached Breaking Point in 1996.
They should of just got the master tracks to this song and redone the vocals (probably lost them though). The Brisbane one is just lacklustre by comparison.
Nick James Jesus Christ, how stupid do you think I am? I know it's the same song, but the modern version sounds shit. It should've been redone big band style with brass instruments again. There was also no instrumental interlude anymore. The bulldogs also had theirs remade but it was a lot more faithful to the original Fable Singers version.
It's sadly not possible, when these guys recorded these tracks in 1972 it was done in the one go pretty much. Gonna be hard to get instrumentals if that's the case
I've never been a football person at all. Being forced to play it at my old private school in Melbourne was a pointless exercise. That said, Fitzroy Lions is part of Melbourne and a sad loss for all of us. Maybe I'm just being nostalgic.
Bloody hell i reckon the fitzroy song should be played every time the lions play in victoria! I'm a tiges supporter but i believe it's absolutely disgraceful that there is no fitzroy in the afl anymore!
You couldn't be more wrong. Melbourne and the Bulldogs were never close to merging. The Bulldogs nearly merged with Fitzroy and North Melbourne but raised enough money to avoid either. They never wanted to merge, they were railroaded into it by the VFL because Fitzroy were abhorrent. Melbourne nearly merged with the Hawks but that's it for them. Same deal, the Hawthorn footy club fought their way out of it.
AFL, you may as well bring the Fitzroy Lions back. Everybody wants it, The Bears are also wanted back. Please bring em back. It might actually help the state if Queensland improve there skills at the great game of ours!

Or they can get rid of the interstate teams and name it back the VFL. No offence to fans outside of Victoria but the VFL was original. If it wasn't AFL none of the mergers would all happen, and Fitzroy would have more chances to win a flag.
And then your clubs will be broke and your competition will fold, us non Victorian clubs Adelaide, west coast and Brisbane paid 6.3 million each when we entered to keep all your clubs alive, you would be NOTHING if it wasn't for us, wake up to yourself.

GO THE MIGHTY ROYS!
Even as an Essendon supporter, I still say the old Fitzroy theme song was the best in footy, it got bastardized during the Brisbane takeover
I agree it was a great theme song but I'd have to say it's second best. The Mighty Tigers have the best song by a country mile.

The tune of the song is the same as the French national anthem

I was too young to follow Fitzroy but this has to have been the best song by far!
Oh... Fitzroy, those were truly better days for you
Way better than Brisbane Bears song. Brisbane should have this one!
Miss this club
I prefer this song to current Brisbane Lions song.
True, I like it to
Easily. It has much more energy and pride.
fitzroy's a legend but brisbane lions are losers
Brisbane should name their VFL team Fitzroy
Marseilles. Every time I hear the French national anthem I think of Fitzroy. A great example of using a classic song
The current Brisbane song is so slow. They need to make it faster like this
this song is so much better than Brisbane Lions.. "Premiers we'll be this year"
Best song from all AFL and VFL songs
Fitzroy and Brisbane’s theme song are basically the same
Same tune but different lyrics
No shit Sherlock that’s the fucking point
my pop Ken Ross played at Fitzroy :)

great theme tune. #FFC
we had some good battles against Richmond...
GO LIONS 🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁

25 years today
yep
Go lions
Does Fitzroy still play?
Doomblade700™ Yes, in an amateur VAFA league.
Did fitzroy ever win a flag?
Jake Piggott yes last one was 1944 I believe not sure how many they won
8 VFL and 3 VFA
It is time... to split this mob back into Fitzroy Lions and Brisbane Bears. The time has come. Jed Adcock for Fitzroy Captain
Anyone here a Roys fan.
I am and my late father was too. Roboys for ever.
Yeah!!
St Kildas only won 1 premiership but because they are the rich tourist boys they stay in......
even I agree
Well Brisbane would change their nickname or leave if Fitzroy came back.
that's different
The last time they were premiers was in 1944
R.i.p
Jonathan Brown who is retired played for Fiztroy then for Brisbane
it's a shame that they were alright on the field but could not do the finishing touch to win the game
