Am a Collingwood fan. However it was completely unnecessary for Fitzroy to merge. AFL had no problem giving interstate clubs money when in trouble, but that ''generosity'' didn't extent to Melbourne clubs. Fitzroy were just going through a bad patch. -Hawthorn and Melbourne were going through it, and now they were fine. Now everyone has gotten about the proposed merger... -North Melbourne were in a bad patch and were told they need to move to the Gold Coast. Than they made some finals, and now everyone forgot that they were very asked to move interstate. -In the 80's Richmond were broke, and were purposed to move to Brisbane. That's now long forgotten. If the AFL had given them abit of cash, and Fitzroy made the finals, everyone would of forgotten about this period, and still be the Fitzroy Lions, and everything would be normal.
My 9yo son and I are Brisbane fans. I make sure he knows as much as he can about Fitzroy and he is very aware that the Lions have both a Brisbane history and a Melbourne history. Obviously for old school Lions fans, it's not the same as being able to cheer on your local team at Brunswick Street every fortnight, but I'd like to think that most hardcore Brisbane fans (the ones that kept turning up over the last decade) are very respectful of Fitzroy's history and culture. Never forgotten.
By following the fake AFL expansion club the Brisbane Lions you're are doing exactly what the corporate criminals of the AFL wanted you to do. They are NOT Fitzroy and never can be and never will be. Move on but never forget.
Patrick O'Connor St Kilda. My dad was pulled to North because of the merge but before I was born, they looked like they were going to relocate to Gold Coast so he switched to St Kilda so that I wouldn’t support an interstate team.
This is shady to watch, just knowing that in that same time frame, Sydney got bailed out by the AFL while Fitzroy floundered. I'm an American who supports Brisbane and I hope that while not completely possible, Brisbane can attempt to carry on the legacy of Fitzroy forever.

Lived in Subiaco in the 90's ; went to the last quarter of Fitzroy's last game, knowing it was history that very Sunday. Sadder than sad and still is.
As an Aussie footy fan this is heartbreaking to see a famous Australian footy club go under. I would hate to see it happen to my team.

This caused my Dad so much heartache that I’ve been raised to hate Brisbane more than any other club in the AFL.

Fitzroy has not played in the AFL in 26 years but they still have more fans than the GWS and Suns ever have and ever will.
