Not exaggerating, this is one of the absolute best tutorial shows on the internet. I was a professional artist for over a decade. My parents were professional artists. My grandparents were famous artists. I have studied, I have trained, I still come back to Xabio videos to refresh basics.
Artists are generally more thoughtful people and as a result, think more about the world and themselves and are often more depressed than other people and our boy here is growing older and seeing the sharp, painful side of reality you discover as you get older and see the sheer amount of uncertainty and pain in the world. Source: artist. Very depressed.
thank you so much andrew for helping me develop my ability to express myself. it sounds major dumb but I’ve been goin through a lot lately and drawing is what helps me keep going. thank you from the bottom of my heart
My art teacher caught me doing that in middle school. I was using my pointer but he told me if I have to use my fingers use my pinky finger bc that's the smallest finger so I'd have the most precision
Lol as an art teacher you are correct, the finger blending shading technique can look so bad. The step that most beginning artist miss is that clean up process that you demoed. That is what makes a difference. Learned a lot! I especially love the advice to not care to much about your art while you’re starting out.
I'm starting to realise that my Art Teacher was not a normal art teacher, because he told us that using your finger is a good way to smudge if you don't have tools for that like paper stumps. I only stopped doing that because I found out that when we do that we mix the oils present on our skin and that can discolour the paper later on down the line, and I have VERY oily skin. LOL Basically, do whatever works for you. :)
There we have it, another amazing tutorial. I remember when I first found out about this channel two or three years ago when I was newer (and more scared) to art how much this channel helped so much and still helps me today. I seriously wouldn't be where I am in my art without this channel, so thank you and have a nice week
Xabio, I remember someone saying this “the lightest shadow is always darker than the darkest highlight” and I’m not too sure if it’s okay what you are showing to people. It may work on some cartoony style because it makes high contrast but it’s not fully natural because you will rarely see bounce light lightest than highlight. So correct would be to slightly shade it, and makes highlights fully pop. What you made on video looks more like backlit character and then core shadow should be on the other side of character where you put Mid tones
"It helps when you dont care abt your art" hit me right in that tiny box in my head where I give myself reassurance that one day ill wake up and actually be good at art despite wasting all my precioustime watching anime!!! Scares me how you just know it...
@@XabioArts That would be fantastic. I've been so lost with mine. My husband got me a Wacom Cintiq Pro 24" for my birthday. I'm a bit overwhelmed by it. I have no idea how to map the buttons, let alone use photoshop. Any help you can put in a video, I would be incredibly grateful for. :)
HI. I'm an art teacher. Annnnnd.......I hate that I can't use this little tutorial in my class. Seriously hate it. You DO smudge the pencil with your finger, which is a huge no-no in my class (it imbeds your skin oil into the paper, which makes erasing a lot harder or straight up impossible) but I could teach around that. All the rest of the advice is spot on. Accurate. And you explain it well. Core shadows. Reflected light. Different ways of shading. Good stuff. But....you HAD to eat the donkey. Right there at the beginning, too. If I were to use your words of wisdom in my online class my administration would go nuclear apoplectic before the first 20 seconds had run. Drat.

Yeah I think this was is easier but it's super messy so if I wanna cheat at shading I use a paper blending pencil or a tissue of I don't have any.
