Xero shoes are the best around. I like them for medieval combat because they're flat like historically accurate shoes, but they work great during my workouts, cardio, and running!

Just to clear up a bit of misinformation for HMB specifically, the armour you wear has to be within a 30 year span and same region. It doesn't all have to be from the same effigy, though that does make it easier to document. For most of the kits, if you wear a "common style" used in HMB, the documentation you need to provide is pretty null. The further you deviate from "normal" the more the burden of proof is on you to provide. I also recommend you base it off the helmet you want to wear, as your body armour can be covered by a tabard, so its not as "strict" on design requirements!
I definitely agree that IMCF/ACS is more inclusive, and if your MAIN goal is to fight in domestic tournaments (especially if you are on the east coast) ACS is a solid organization to join. IMO, HMB takes the cake on international competition, though, if your goal is to travel more!
Thanks for this video! We need more content like this from fighters and staff members!
Thanks for clearing some of that up! I had heard the tabard hide as well, but wanted to just kind of lay it out, would hate for someone to happen to not pass despite it never being an issue as far as I've heard. HMB definitely takes the cake on international events, and I totally agree with the ACS comment. Just didn't want to leave the other out in case it happened to be the only option. Need more comments like this, I'm not going to be right on it all for sure.
Just realized you are the Grant I know from practice lmao
😂😂😂😂😂 nice to meet your RUclips bro
Do you guys still hang out?
I disagree that the helmet is the worst part to share... the Cup is the worst part to share LOL. Great video!
😂😂😂 truth, and thanks!
Wait, you always ask to borrow my cup after 3 rounds
@@taylorjones8407 i like to keep things live
Real friends share cups, and help make sure they're on correctly

Thanks for the great content! The Knights Hall is near me and I’m extremely tempted to try it out sometime
They're a great group, definitely give them a shot!
I just want to say thank you for the info I've been so confused about the leagues and etc
You're very welcome! I was as well when I started so glad this helps 🙂
Crazy just seen your fight on IG and now here I am watching your video on how to get into the sport
It’s a blast man you’re gonna love it!
LOVE IT
love the investigator portrait.
I just started on a Tulsa woman's teams this week! and def will not be buying anything till the year mark!!
this vid def helped on some things thank you!!!
I’ve always been interested in trying it for a couple years now
Hey grant, good to see you here doing great
Hey buddy!
This is awesome!!! Just sent this link to my husband, I'm pretty sure armor is the only thing he doesn't have relating to the time. And that's only because of the cost 😂😂
Hey Graham/Grant,
So glad I found your channel. I've been interested in this sport for some time now but have had no clue where to start and tbh recent clips are tricky to find on RUclips.
Also, I live in Australia so not like I can pop down to the local garrison to shake some hands. What should I do to get involved or atleast better informed?
Cheers mate, also, I recommend adding an intro + outro screen. With sudden finishes to videos makes it hard to hit the like button when watching on console and it just looks a little more professional.
Anyway that's my 2cents haha
Hope to hear from you!
Thanks and will do. Do you have a Facebook or instagram you can message my page on? Much easier to help that way friend, but regardless I can help for sure!
awesome video. ive been researching the sport, because i think i might seriously try to get into it. one thing im curious about (to any experts that might happen upon this comment)... the historical accuracy seems to be quite important in deciding your kit. which is cool on one hand, but on the other, im not a historian. are there resources people use to figure out what pieces/styles are from where and when? like if i found a certain helmet i liked, how would i figure out what my options were for other armor/weapons to go along with it?
Big fan and interest in beginning myself! Only issue is having a problem in North Alabama near Huntsville, finding a league or IMCF group
Try the armored combat sports group. It only takes 3 to make a team and someone may already be interested or trying in the group!
Cool vid, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
I've been extremely interested in this sport for a couple years at this point, following along with different events and learning what I can from videos. Unfortunately, I'm located in the midwest US, and my state doesn't have any active armored combat groups through any of the organizations/leagues that I've seen. I'm still determined to get in better shape and find the best location to visit and learn more. If my interests are more in line with IMCF/ACS, are there any specific groups I should take a trip to see? Regardless of where I go, I'll have to drive 5-8 hours or fly so I'd like to make it count.
You can always come to Houston and check out the team I'm on, San Jacinto Knights 🤪. But Dallas Warlords have a lot of experience, are gold medalists last year and hold training events and are a great place to start. Check out the Facebook group Armored Combat Sports and make a post and see if anyone else is in your area as well by chance. There may be another waiting to start a team, and it only takes 3 people. You'll get lots of guidance there as well from the league leaders for things.
@@GrantTheKnight Thanks, I’ll look into it!
where are you located ? there is lots of stuff going on in the midwest . detroit is big and ohio has at least 3 teams now . most organizations have a team finder link on their websites . if you are desparate you can check out the sca which is much lighter fare but your buhurt armor will work there with no problem . they are big in this country (since 66) so they are about everywhere in the us .
I'm in the Midwest as well and have been interested in this sport as well.
Ope already answered my question
Cheers this was helpful
Glad it helped
I got all my metal getting cut and I'll be putting it together soon.
Nice! Gotta be pretty cool making it yourself.
I just found this sport- it looks amazing. I cannot wait to get to the point I buy armor haha.
Thanks man! If you need any help message me on instagram or facebook too.
@@GrantTheKnight thanks Grant. Love the content. Found a team by me. Going to watch their event June 10th to see it in person. I probably will haha thanks
I've been to 2 soft kit practices so far. Granted most of the long timers are getting ready for the Carolina Carnage...I'm just trying to feel out where I'd fit in.
I want to join this sport!
Someone needs to make a league where it can be open time periods. Even better, open weapon class. Like a MMA of weapon combat.
I wonder how bows could be implemented into medieval mma
Possibly rubber blunt heads and poundage limits
Can you solo if you have no groups near you
When you bought your Used Armor off Facebook what keywords did you use to find it ? I'm very new to all this and just want to start looking around to see what there is.
See the other comment of yours I replied to, but just msg me
How do I get started if there isn't a team/club in my state? Also, any resources on combat training or swordsmanship? Btw, I'm in GA if anyone else would like to train or start a team.
Most definitely post on the ACS or ACW Facebook groups. It only takes 3 to make a team and could be others just needing a few to get started.
This guy has some good stuff. Should have captions for English. ruclips.net/user/UkolovsHMBeducationalchannel
At the risk of sounding dumb, what is the latest time period someone can choose for their armor/weapons?
im having a bit of trouble on finding classes, im not really sure how to find them nearby. the closest place that is pretty much just classes is about 3 hours away from me. there are nearby teams but on the knight finder all it says is their address, and i cannot find any information about them
Check out Armored Combat Sports Facebook group. You can make a post and they’ll get you to the right person.
I'm 5'7 165 lbs. Are there weight classes or would I be scrapping with people much larger then me?
Both. Profights use weight classes. Duels and melees do not, but there are plenty of people your size, so don't let it stop you. Duels use points and while there are takedowns, it's more about the strikes and points still. Melees have roles to fill and speed and technique can still win in those roles.
I got so insanely amped for this - just get in and test what you are. I was close to drooling.
Now I just realized it an innocent human in the suit and they just want to have some fun.
Don't know if I could handle hurting someone that wasn't literally trying to put me in the grave.
God - he comes always at curious times and gives you sight of the big picture.
Oh well, looks like so much fun though.
Thank mankind for the military and contracting huh?
That was a bit of a hurdle for me to get past, but honestly once you get hurt then hugged later, you get more ok with it lol. It's what we're all there for.
I totally understand where you're coming from but my understanding is, you're not trying to hurt anyone, you're just trying to knock them over.
The "hurting" is just a by-product... 😉
Much better explanation for sure
I want to get in and i want to make some pieces of armor myself, but only simple things, when it comes to things like helmets where should i get armor? I've been looking at ForgeOfSvan and some other places but im not sure, any advice?
Age of Craft, Buhurt Tech, Alexander Yakhnovskyi to name a few, all have Facebook profiles. Forge of Svan is ok to you just need to make sure to check the rules for the league - there are requirements on the thickness and steel and stuff.
@@GrantTheKnight thank you, i dont exactly have much experience lol, so i might follow the guidlines you have for beginners and check out the makers you suggested
Absolutely man, really best to find a team before buying anything.
If your armor is 15th century but your sabatons is 14th century is it still fine since its just foot protection.
Kinda the same question for arms and legs but I imagine they need to be the same.
I havnt bought any armor yet just making sure before I decide to buy anything or more like if i ever have the money to get anything.
You’re right, there’s a 50+- on the gear but needs to be around the same area and time.
@@GrantTheKnight thanks for letting me know
When you say im right do you mean that sabatons don't really matter that much.
As far as I know, just be in the range.
Just a question, medieval maces were meant to crush armor and kill people, why doesn't armor ever get crushed, is it the thickness orrr, just very curious
For us it might be the blunt ends possibly? I’m not 100% sure tbh. Maces weren’t as heavy as people think (4-5lbs was HEAVY historically) so we’re at it on that
👍
I want to make sure I didn't miss something. From what I saw on all the different teams pages, there are only three in Illinois, and they are in either Chicago or Springfield, would this be correct. I am brand new and trying to get into the sport, so I am just trying to choose a team I can realistically attend.
Correct. You can hit up the Armored Combat Sports group on Facebook and get in touch there as well. Teams pop up too that may be new and not on the site and that group is a good way to connect.
@@GrantTheKnight thank you for the advice, I look forward to getting into this sport
You’re welcome! Any questions hmu on any of my pages.
So... There are classes for different weights (at times) but are there classes for different ages?
I'm 60 & mildly fit (but getting fitter all the time) Would I be pitted against men a third my age or just crazy old men like me?
I would hate to prove to be the exception to the old saying, "Old age & treachery will always overcome youth & skill"...
It does prove to overcome youth often just to say. No age classes. Only weight classes in profights.
The buhurt armor are heavy and blunt impact resistant. Not for average people 👏 The only funny thing is smashing like ogres. Other than that, i like how tough the armor is compared to regular medieval armor
It is a little tougher but fairly similar in weight. Of course our heat treats are likely a billion times better than medieval ages though haha. Armor back then was pretty blunt resistant too.
Do you know if there is an age limit in Texas for this sport
Yeah in the U.S. you have to be 18, beyond that I know a couple in their 50s still doing it well.
What about in the UK
Same idea, except Europe is more focused on HMB from my understanding. There is a couple ACW teams as well.
Anyone in the DFW area doing this?
Yup check out Warlords Combat Academy!
is anybody able to join this sport or do you have to have a somewhat athletic background to do so?
Anyone can, the team you join helps train you. I only had foil fencing for a short time in my background and some weightlifting.
@@GrantTheKnight thanks for the answer! There's a few groups in my state and I think I might check it out.
So if i wanted to fight with a KENABO, i would need samurai armour?! I'm okay with that!
Is there weight classes
Only in profights. You’d be surprised how well a smaller guy with good technique can take down a larger guy though.
8:15 So are you really saying that you are not...
"Down with the Sickness"? 🤪😎
😂 I am up with the healthiness lmao
Never start with this! It will become your obsession!
I have no clue what is going on besides my knowledge of armour but the idea to share my Gambeson with a stranger ... nope.
I've done it and regretted it. It's so, so gross. That and the helmet.
İs this in USA or UK ?
This is the US
A woman can join too? asking for a friend of mine
What I dont get is why both focus on more of the historical crap if we are not reacting for specific knights then we are our own knights warriors etc alot of armor was inspired by something or to intimidate while yet being able to be actually effective in combat look at the samurai they wanted to look like demons to intimidate their enemies. Now I'm not saying go to crazy on your own design especially if it will effect safety issues. Example 1992 Gary Oldman's armor looks like it could have actually been worn in history it wasn't too out there yes I know nobody actually wore that besides in the movie. But if knights back then had access to the crap we do now I'm pretty sure they would have been inspired. Which yes not alot of knights got to decorate their armor because it was only for the most of wealthy knights that could afford such things.
There are some things out there, but we have to have historical sources and be close to it for our armor. It’s also quite expensive to get the few sources like what you’re saying because they’re just plain harder to make. But I do agree would probably have some level of intimidation with it for those that have a source and can afford it.
@@GrantTheKnight you can still use historical armor as the base then add your unique taste to it which is what they did for that movie they took real concepts of historical armor but added their own story their own look.
We could for the shows for sure, but most of us compete and while not always, they can get strict on staying historical. Show-wise and some local competitions we definitely could to an extent though.
@@GrantTheKnight which don't get me wrong I get it alot of people prefer the absolute historical aspect nothing wrong with that but it would be cool to start a new league a new competition that would allow to be more of their own style long as it doesn't inflict with safety issues.
Oh not against it man. There’s plenty that argue it can be a modern sport based off history too. I’d love to put some personality on my stuff without any rules as well!
How did I get here. haha
Do iiiiiiiiittttt!
please dont refer to this as reenactment . that is VERY different and attracts a VERY different mind set . there is lots of overlap of course but that mistake would very much be off putting to newbies .
This and I didn’t think I did?
Is that a microwave beeping all throughout this video? Super distracting 🤪
Lol I didn’t even notice. Tis the life of a parent who records lol
