I've been playing harmonica for 55 yrs, lots of credits, etc. what Toots does here is mind-blowing ! His harmonic knowledge and agility to transform a simple melody into a major jazz foray is astounding.
Wonderful ! Toots was a very very great jazzman. He played such beautiful notes during his choruses !!! And his theme and chorus played here are really wonderful. Thank you Toots.
A complete master of his craft, he turned the blues harmonica into a swinging jazz instrument....... not forgetting his contributions to other notable songs, such as MIdnight Cowboy, and BIlly Joel''s Leave A Tender Moment Alone.... R.I.P.
Yes,VERY nice. And you sounded great, too, as you did when I heard you back in the last century ('90s?) at the 4-Queens in Vegas, with Cedar Walton. A fond memory.
Toots' playing on Rogier van Otterloo's "Dat Mistige Rooie Beest" from the "Turks Fruit" soundtrack is the most haunting beautiful chrom harp sound ever.
yes there are some wonderful players out there but this is the guvner toots.he impressed charlie parker way back at the start and has knocked everybody out since.ask quincey. his command of his instrument is awesome.he is responsible for bringing this little harp alongside the tenor...trumpet...trombone...etc...as a major frontline horn.toots is tops.many thanks.
to answer risque, one of the very finest harmonica players in the world is a woman who presently lives in Sydney Australia. She is French. Her name is Christelle Berthon. check her out on youtube. Her version of Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder is absolutely top shelf complexity and difficulty. she's up there with Dennis Greunling and Jason Ricci as skilled harp players. dont miss her stuff.
@ElizabethGS I meant no disrespect by my question. I've been playing around with a harmonica and I think it is such a great (and very portable) instrument. It would be an excellent instrument to be taught in schools. I will google this and thank you for your response.
@risqueclay Of course there is. Christelle Berthon! christellester. I love her musik as well, but this here is another kind. She plays diatonic 10holes Harp, not chromatic like him, and she plays differend styles very well. I love this Instrument!
@MrDeepthot Thanks so very much! Just got through watching the fabulous Big Mama Thornton in the 1960 jam session. One of the advantages of asking a stupid question is you do get educated. I love youtube.
@risqueclay Yes..i agree about hermine deurloo, she's a great harmonica player..and, apart from her skills she's a very humble person, i've talked to her once...
@TonyOnTheRise I disagree; I play the harmonica (both diatonic as chromatic), I also play guitar, a bit of piano... there are other instruments, like violin or harp, those are harder.
@risqueclay what a question. :) Why not? I'm a woman and I've played harmonica since I was 4. I gave it up for a long time ..played piano instead - and now have come back to it..chromatic harmonica. I'm no pro, but there are brilliant women professional harmonica players both chromatic and diatonic out there. Michal Adler of Israel, the aforementioned Hermine Deurloo, too many others to name - do a google search, you'll find them. In China, harmonica is taught in school, both to girls and boys.
Dear Jean Pierre, Thank you so much for your amazing blues chromatic harmonicaplaying, I am a big fan of you! You play the blues just fantastic, my compliments for the other musicians too ofcourse, we wish you a lot of succes with all your performances in the future. I play the chromatic myself, please visit our channel chrismayka on RUclips, thanks in advance. We wish you a blessed and beautiful upcoming Easter weekend. Dearest greetings Chris - The Netherlands - RUclips chrismayka.
I know one on diatonic harmonica who play very well and has a youtube account, search on google for harpqueen she's called christelle something. But generally speaking look at the great instrument players, how many are women??? I can think of many as wonderful female singers, but the great musicians of history are not women!

Another perfect angel passes with me none the wiser... so when did we lose him and
what did him in? Toots put the harp up top, God bless him...
Tomorrow is the anniversary of his passing. What a great musician he was.

is there any more videos where tony dumas and toots play together?
what mic is he using?
Bobby Darin was no "slouch" playing the harmonica either. However, different genre of music. "Toots" is THE BEST!!!!!!!!!

To mention a few:
Rachelle Plas
Christelle Berthon
Susan Sauter
Tiffany Harp
The Adler Trio
🌱💙🌼🙄
it it a chromatic harmonica?
Don't forget the violin or viola, also hard to play as jazz instrument.
Toots let the harmonica speak to you
