Yeah, that scene put james marsters in therapy, and I've heard he's got a rider in his contract now to make sure he never has to do anything like that again

Yup; he has a rider that ensures he will never perform another scene like he did in this episode.

    Great reaction !
    Some explanations :
About the scene in which Spike attempts to rape Buffy, James Marsters stated: "I'm proud of it artistically, but as a human being I never, never, never want to do a scene like that again and I will always refuse because I know what it does to me."
According to Marsters, the bathroom scene came from a writer's personal experience: "One of the writers, a female writer, had a situation in her life where she was and her boyfriend were breaking up and she decided if she just made love to him one more time, that they wouldn't break up. She ended up trying to force herself on him and decided to write about that. The thing is, if you flip it and make it a man forcing himself on a woman, I believe it becomes a whole different thing... I'm not really sure it expressed what the author was intending and on that score it was not successful."
James MAster : "It was the hardest day of my professional career, it sent me into therapy. I collapsed on set, I couldn't even speak; I was shaking. That was a horrible day…when that script came, I was contracted to do anything that they said to anybody that they said to do it. I was legally compelled to do that scene. It wasn't fun to watch, probably, but it wasn't fun to film either."
It seems that after the scene, Masters broke down and cried for a good hour and that Sarah was there the whole time to comfort him. But i'm not sure about the details.

that's pretty bold of the writer to admit that.

I'm not trying to excuse attempted r*pe, because there is no excuse for that. But I feel that when people use this scene as proof that Angel is a better match for Buffy, they overlook that Spike Angel has a soul, and Spike doesn't. Take Angel's soul away, and you've got Angelus, who would happily r*pe Buffy to death, because he's a sadistic monster. Spike tried to r^pe Buffy out of a desperate attempt to make her love him. Even without a soul, Spike has proven that he's willing to die for Buffy or Buffy's loved ones. Having said that, yes, what Spike did was unforgivable.

The reason I’m not a spuffy Is that spike is very grey they made him muddy from the very beginning and joss and James has said this before that spike had humanity in him he knew right from wrong and he still did these terrible things aka SA Buffy and the difference with Angel and they made that very clear is that Angel with a soul and without are two different people where as with spike it’s a spoiler so yeah. And James has said that he wished he didn’t play spike with humanity is he knew the rought they was taking. Spike and Angel I think aren’t comparable two different men and two very different circumstances spike may die for Buffy is very nice but also kind terrible because that means he’s capable of nice but also capable of nasty stuff like a lot of people in the real world with souls so the soulless comment I don’t understand spike has been shown over over again to be abusive to women and the show makes it like a joke because James is so charismatic. Drue, Harmony and now Buffy and probably more

But Spike not having a soul is exactly what the problem is
If Buffy were sleeping with soulless Angelus and there were this many people excusing Angelus' behaviour you can bet your ass all of the anti-spuffy crowd would also be yelling about him being a soulless vampire.

As a Spuffy stan, It becomes clearer later. This was not it. This will never be it. I like to forget this scene every damn time. I hate it.

This scene is very necessarily for Spike's character development. It was to remind the audience Spike doesn't have a soul...

It's a toss-up between this episode and The Body as to which is harder to watch.

You and I are on the same page; I’ve always been a Buffy/Angel stan and I’ve never understood why so many people like Spike and Buffy together

Its really interesting watching reactors react to THE scene... Even the people who are doing rewatches after a while have totally forgotten or blocked it out. I still remember it from first run, because Spike hisses before there was a commercial break right in the middle of the scene! So, I remember sitting there on the edge of my couch with my mouth open, screaming, and then wondering wtf I just watched... And I also thought Willow's reaction was way too accepting of it all. It looks bad... It was really awful and kinda threw me out...but then the end of the show and then back to trauma. 🥺
James Marster's said that he had to go to therapy after this and he now has it in all and any of his contracts that he isn't interested in those kinds of scenes. (I think it was traumatizing, but I think he also witnessed a lot of physical abuse toward women in his family when he was young.)
Nicholas Brendon ended up playing a rapist in an episode of Grey's Anatomy and it was brutal. I didn't watch the show, but I saw a snippet and the aftermath.

Thing that ticked me off the most with the later episodes of Buffy, is how Andrew got off scot free, and became a "good guy".

The Spike and Buffy thing is awful and there's no excuse that can excuse it. HOWEVER... it's also good evidence of why, in an aggressive (BDSM or not) relationship, things like safewords are needed. So many times before throughout this season he'd come on to her over and over, she'd say no and then give in. If you think about it you can see that mentality here within him. He was desperately trying to have another one of those moments here. It's horrible but somewhat understandable, even if it can't really be forgiven. Again, I am NOT excusing what Spike does here he deserves all the ire he gets from every reactor for what happens here.

I think Xander bailing on Anya at the altar tops Buffy's affair with Spike. What makes it worse is Xander telling Buffy that what she did was far worse, as if he's trying to justify his own bad decisions. Nicholas Brendan's performance was very good. He made me think Xander was a complete douchebag. I've resented some of Xander's behavior in past seasons, but I've never felt such disdain for him as I do in this episode.

The love for Spuffy comes from the "bad boy gone good"/enemies to lovers tropes, like Luke/Laura from General Hospital, wherein he did r*pe her but the pairing was still super popular. This season was supposed to show how unhealthy the ship was but just like with L/L fans ate it up.
Always personally preferred Angel as well, even though long-term it was clearly a no go.

Yeah spike and buffy never worked, Angel and buffy are the best couple and most iconic duo that actually works together.

I don't ship neither one. One was statutory rape and the other was attempted. Angel loved her before he even knew her, he actually knew of her before she moved to Sunnydale because he was stalking her. She was at least 15 at the time and he had sex with her on her 17th birthday. Both relationships were toxic that's why neither one could last.

Lmao but it was consensual. She desperately wanted him and he gave her what she wanted
