If you haven't watched Akira yet take note of all the background movement in the opening scene it's crazy how much they took the effort to animate

They're using ghost as an allegory for spirit or soul. The major is a cyborg ( part robot part living) there's a human brain encased in that steel skull back story is she was a childhood accident victim and early prosthetic body tester who ended up in a feminine combat chassis during a long past conflict

first the manga, then the movie, then a second movie, but also manga follow ups, followed by series, video games... with all cool franchises, the series jumps the shark at one point. I would say manga, first movie, second to a degree and the first two animated series stand alone complex are the peak, the rest is just rehashing and remixing of the original(s). this was certainly not the first anime or the first cyberpunk anime, but certainly one who put it on a bigger map and made mainstream audiences took notice. it influenced lots of other later movies like the matrix for example. it comes full circle when in the series that followed there are some little homages to the matrix in scenes.

There's a lot of cyberpunk media that delves into the question of artificial intelligence very few take it all the way to could ai basically develop a "soul" like this one does

    feel like anime devolved

animation quality devolved, japan cost of living went up drastically since the 60s, the pay for animators did not, budgets funded by studios were voraciously guarded by the execs and stock holders in japan. eventually as the decades past and digital was taking hold, the anime industry found shortcuts and gimmicks to cut cost in episodic content. plus lack of talented animators can hurt a team from a studio working on the product. you may have a lead animator animate all the key frames while subordinate animators do the in between leaving room for drop in skill and quality. Blame the anime industry for strangling itself.

@@homus45 Once in a while you'll get an amazing gem like Frieren but most anime find ways to be cheap and get themselves on as many streaming services as possible. The truly great ones still take years to make and don't come out every anime season. MAPPA exposed what a trainwreck they are with how badly animated that super hyped episode of Jujutsu Kaisen came out and it ended up looking mediocre compared to what it was adapting. Studios like Ufotable still make amazing stuff but even they're adapting generic popular Shonen.
