      1 - I hold the simplistic view that Dragon's power (whatever it is or if he even ate a Devil Fruit)... He sure showed a certain mastery of it in Logue Town when he saved Luffy... But he had the fruit during Ginny's abduction? Or the fruit was still useless or too dangerous to use casually? Or is more draining than the Op Op fruit?
      By memory I think Luffy took 14 years to awaken his fruit... and Kaku only 2.. and there are people that couldn't even master his powers during a lifetime...
      2 - One would think that the RA is too pragmatic... since their objective is a long term revolution that don't fall back easily once it ends... Like that time Moses saved his people from Egypt only to keep listening for 40 years from his protegees that "Egypt was better" while they were in the desert...
      And it will be stupidly difficult to listen that Ginny was a "short term goal"... mainly if Dragon reveals a really broken fruit power during the final arc... Although I can see Dragon causing the incident that marks him as the most dangerous man to the WG while regretting not having this power sooner...

      I'm mixed on this video. In a way, it feels like Morj tore down Shanks, Luffy, and Whitebeard to propel Dragon which is unfair since we know how righteous they are. Shanks, Luffy, and Whitebeard are shown to put themselves at risk to protect the weak. Shanks and Whitebeard don't have to go through the effort of marking their territory to protect "weaklings". Dragon strikes me as the type of dude to do all the side missions first before beating the game, whereas Oda wants to show you the other 3 do whatever they want, focus on themselves, and do what they can. The other 3 have the same legitimacy as beimg called forces of good, just like Dragon.
      Edit: I love morjs content and the reason Im saying this is because we still have to find out what shanks and whiteveard know about the world and what Luffy's dream is. Talking about dragons morals and planning feels too soon.

    Dragon if anything is pragmatic. Would he have wanted to go for and rescue a commander that was captured? Probably. Would it be practical and help achieve their overall goal? No. The time and resources needed to pull such a mission isn't smart. It's why Dragon has worked as he has, freeing islands in clusters around the world. He is waiting for the perfect strike. The right amount of global instability, the right number of free islands willing to fight with him, the right perfect mask off moment for the World Government's evil and corruption so that he can end this in a single targeted attack and cause as little collateral as possible.

    Dragon and the revolutionary army offer a REAl depiction of what a revolutionary force actually looks like. It's not like every time a soldier gets captured you have a whole army up in arms trying to save them. If Dragon went after every single soldier that gets captured they would've lured him and killed him decades ago.

      I agree generally, however there is something to be said for the deterrent effect when you do retaliate for every casualty. We actually saw this effect take place after alabasta when buggy refused to so much as touch ace because he knew that it would cause whitebeard to retaliate. If there wasn’t that implicit threat of whitebeard retaliating then far more people would attack members of his crew. It’s also the reason why whitebeard offering his flag to fishman island made the entire island significantly more peaceful. That being said, it’s quite a different story when the enemy is just as (if not more) powerful, which is why dragon gets a pass for not rescuing ginny

However, with dragon and the revolutionaries, that deterrent factor isn't as relevant. By nature of being revolutionaries, they are actively pursued by the government anyway, as the government's top priority.

    • @AlexAlex-vk9sy
      @AlexAlex-vk9sy 7 месяцев назад +22

      @@spacecoyote6101 Sure but here we must consider the difference in Nature of the Revolutionaries. Whitebeard was part of the Balance of Power, he knew his place. That the WG wasn't actively taking out Commanders but only did so when the opportunity came with Ace capture is because the risk here wouldn't be worth it.
      The WG would need to constantly keep up a force like Marineford, expect a fight like Marineford because they keep on provoking the Yonkos into a fight. Why would you do that? The Yonkos at end are pirates, they don't care about a war with the WG. If the WG lets them be at New World only casually checking for weakpoints, containing them and sow dissent between them so that they are too busy having a stalemate between the fight for the PK, they're fine.
      The Revolutionaries are different because they actively fight to take down the WG, upset their authority not only on one ocean, but the whole world. So the Revolutionaries cannot be allowed to grow as every quarter given allows them to expand. So they must act in a constant Siege Mentality. Every move, every charge, every dare for battle can be the moment to break them all. So they must act cautious. Think about it, the SHs only actively challenged the WG once and they all almost lost their life more than once, got all the possible support they could've gather for such an attack on Enies Lobby, had to exhaust their leader to the point that he couldn't move anymore and still needed luck to pull it off. The Revos have their operation running for almost two decades now and seemingly only permanently lost one Commander while surely actively seeking fights with Kingdoms and Marine Commanders.
      That means they're actually very effective. A ginny is irreplacable, but so is every other strong fighter in their force. She might have taken down dozens of Rear or even Vice Admirals, yet this hasn't shaken the WG in any way. We see that even an Admiral if taken in measures is at end replacable, as while they still had to take drastic measures, they still managed to replace two of their most important Fighters.
      For them tho, their is no second Dragon.

    I agree with you entirely and have thought about this quite a bit during the story. That is, i agreed with you up until Wano. Luffy said his speech about not being a hero in fishman island, but I think that he has changed his view of the world since then. Jimbe has joined the crew and he has a strong sense of right and wrong in a very societal context. His roll of helmsman signals that he will guide Luffy with his wisdom and understanding of the world and its oppression. In Dressarosa, Luffy shows progress. When Law says that he wants luffy to leave, Luffy says "what will become of this country?" But the real change came in Wano. I think that making Momonosuke ask him for help was just a way of training momo to be a better leader instead of taking control himself. Luffy really internalizes the starvation of the people and goes after Kaido for the express purpose of saving the country. During his final clash, he started talking to Kaido about what kind of world he imagined, which is something he has never done before. I think this transition from accidental liberator to purposeful liberator, is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT character development for luffy and may have been the thing that unlocked gear 5 for him as he ascends to be the god of liberation he was destined to be.

    One thing I want to add about Dragon is that, of all the “heroic” type people we see in One Piece, he’s the one that doesn’t play “saviour”.
    What I mean by that is: whenever Luffy, or Shanks, or any others free people from oppression, they do the fighting. They’re the ones that take the mantle, while the oppressed citizens just watch, rather than play any particular part in helping free their land.
    However, the revolutionaries seem to adamantly oppose the “saviour” narrative. All the work they do goes to aid, supporting war-torn areas- rather than swanning in and saving them, they *empower* the community to support themselves- “Whenever the weak stand up for themselves, we’ll be there”. They seem to be deeply invested in the wellbeing of the community, the way no other character is.
    Furthermore, another interesting point raised through the character of Dragon is the fact that a government system is not inherently evil or dangerous. While Luffy and co. are vehemently against the highly militarised, corrupt and ultra-capitalist World Govt simply because it prevents them from chilling on the water, Dragon doesn’t seem fundamentally opposed to the idea. Rather, I think one of his main goals is the establishment of a newer, more democratic system- Koala states as much “Our true enemy isn’t the government”. He knows war-torn areas, that don’t receive welfare; he knows starving people that can’t get food, because it’s been hoarded by the “strongest”; he knows the pain that lawlessness can bring, and hence wants not to abolish authority per se, but ensure it is more fair and just for all, and helps people attain equal footing and a fair life.
    This is important to mention, because nowhere in OP (apart from possibly the cases of Whitebeard and Fujitora) do we see a person of authority behaving with such altruism and good intent. By establishing such an important and charismatic character, I think Oda is, ultimately, saying this: “for great freedom, there must be great responsibility”.

    • @g.riffic7707
      @g.riffic7707 7 месяцев назад

      You're so close to being right. But I think you fundamentally misunderstand the nature of Dragon's revolution. Koala's statement that "our true enemy isn't the government" is just a red herring and a way to insinuate that a great power (IMU) is behind the World Government; however, that doesn't make the World Government any less guilty in the oppression of the world. It is still the World Government that props up evil regimes, extorts people, enslaves people, upholds classist, racist, and patriarchal systems. Just because there is a power above the World Government doesn't mean the World Government is suddenly absolved from its crimes.
      Dragon is fundamentally oppossed to the current world order, that is what the Revolutionary army is about. Dragon doesn't want to defeat Imu and then take power himself, that would simply continue the cycle of oppression as they would still be operating within the same form of governance. The point of the revolutionary armu is to completely redefine the living expectations and standards of everyone in the One Piece world. Its goal IS NOT REFORM; IT IS NOT THE REFORM ARMY. The first step to doing so is dismantling the World Government and destroying its leader (Imu).
      Another thing that I was going to point out directly to @MrMorj is that the Revolutionary army isn't just freeing "innocent people." If you are overthrowing the hegomonic power then you are freeing everyone from that dominant power. The point of a revolution is to free the masses (and hopefully set up a government that is held accountable by its people; not just by the bourgeois) and the masses includes everyone. Dragon is fighting the World Government for the freedom of random Pirates on Sabaody as much as he is fighting for the freedom of random kids on Wano. Using the phrase "innocent people" is misleading because it implies that the material conditions in a post-revolutionary world will only change for those who are deemed "innocent." Ultimately, a revolution (especially of the scale of the one that Dragon is leading) is set up to dismantle all oppressive facets of the dominating regime for everyone.
      ie. Evil women are still "freed" the same way "good" women are from the oppression of the patriarchy
      Anyways, all this to say that it's disingenous tow atch Morj's video and then come to the conclusion that Dragon onl;y wants to desteroy Imu and retain the structure of World Governance that has been established by the World Government (because that is simply not true; in fact, we see Dragon's son (Luffy) fight against all the overt forms of oppression that are perpetuated by the World Government in order to contrast Dragon's goal of fighting the structural and systemic oppression that is perpetrated by the goverment).

    Thank you for talking about this.
    The problem with most readers is their agendas. They ignore the actual lore and development of characters in their uniqueness , for the sake of powerscaling.
    Dragon is the most wanted man because his diligence poses the greatest threat to the goverment. As such Dragon has make it his responsibility to oversee everything from a panoramic view. Dragon is Garp’s son after all , and Luffy’s father. I’m sure once Dragon moves he would show similarities with both.
    Dragon is a leader , and the people he wishes to serve are those oppressed. True freedom in the real world , isn’t who lives the freest ( like Luffy and Roger think) , it’s the ability to live free from oppression and lies. That’s what Dragon is fighting for , and he knows that he has to limit his emotions and impulses. Every move that he makes is calculated. Every decision he makes has the possibility of liberating thousands.
    Dragon is selfless , and doesn’t live for himself. He has sacrificed his own personal ambition , for the sake of truth and freedom. If Luffy is the drums of liberations , the beat that signals presence.. than Dragon is the Sword of Justice.

    I absolutely agree with everything in this video, with the caveat that what Dragon is doing is insanely selfless. I guess the perspective is a bit off imo; it's ultimately not anyone's job to defeat the world government, but Dragon shouldered that anyway and that's what makes him the ultimate hero. That doesn't necessarily make Luffy or the other pirates selfish on its own.

Whitebeard seemed to believe that Ace was the one roger was waiting for. I'm sure Shanks and Dragon also have knowledge about the world and its events that the reader hasnt seen as well. Out of these 4, I think calling Luffy selfish makes the most sense because of his happy go lucky attitude towards things. Much needed video. I’ve been saying this for so long first of all, people act like dragon literally doesn’t do anything. People forget - he’s not in the newspaper for no reason. He didn’t become the worlds most dangerous man by sitting on his ass. Us not following his moves =\= him not making any.
    But more importantly, dragon has one of the hardest if not the absolute hardest dream in the story which is to topple the actual structure of the world. Saving _everyone_ means you don’t get to just raid the enemy when they break your heart. It means you have to be methodical and dedicate your life to a level of patience _nobody_ else in the story has. It’s easy to glorify impulsiveness because of our heroes like luffy and roger. People kept criticizing dragon saying “well luffy would’ve gone to mariejois” you’re absolutely right, he would’ve. And gotten everyone killed, or best case scenario succeeded in saving Ginny while leaving the rest of the slaves to suffer and ultimately making no change to the greater structure of the world. That’s fine if you’re luffy, not if you’re the leader of the revolutionary army. People brought up the fisher tiger thing too completely missing the point. Fisher tiger freeing a bunch of slaves was awesome. But what did it actually accomplish in the grand scheme?

    On the Moral Truth section- this isn't even exclusive to One Piece, it's anime fandom as a whole and really just a lot of people in general. People have built up this idea that choosing the one over the many and choosing to save a friend at the risk of hundreds to millions is somehow far more noble an heroic because it's "relatable" or whatever, while consistently demonizing characters who make pragmatic and utilitarian choices. Doesn't help that a lot of anime/manga in general also prop this up.

At this point I think it’ll take quite the explicit show of character in the story itself for readers to realize Oda’s true aim with Dragon, his motives, and his philosophy, which is why my hopes are up for a major Dragon moment (could be both in the concurrent plot or in the ongoing flashback) that cements his place in the final saga (or sets it up more directly). Great vid!

    Dragon's a character who thinks about the bigger issue. He can't make these big sweeping wins like Luffy and co because his goal is to make the world better for everyone. Honestly, it's a goal that seems too overwhelming to be accomplished in his lifetime. But he's setting the foundations and doing as much as he can perhaps hoping the next generation will continue on this fight. I appreciate you making this video, though I did find myself inappropriately giggling at times. I don't know how strong Dragon is, but I've always seen him as weak. I don't mean this as an insult, just unlike other characters he's someone who can't make a move without planning it out. He has to go through all the pros and cons, the risks and rewards, before truly making a move. Perhaps the only time shown in the manga he did something on impulse was saving Luffy at Loguetown. (I can only assume he recognized Luffy's name, I refuse to believe he saw him and realized he was his son instantly!)

      Of course he has to think before moving that doesn't make him weak.
      In 800 years there were no characters that challenged the world government like Dragon did.

      So anyone Who want to bring down the world government has to think twice before acting.

      Only idiots just jump at any sight of inconvenience or danger. You’re taught to think b4 you speak, think b4 you act cause actions speak louder than words. So yea he’s not a meat head who just bum rushes that’s no way hinting he’s weak. Also there’s a theory he has the weather fruit or wind fruit and he’s awakened it years ago and has been watching Luffy all along through his journey. The scene when Ivonkov was asking him why is he’s always facing that way? He was probably watching Luffy using his wind 🌬️ abilities. Physically and mentally abusing your own (or any) child and sentencing it to die befor the age of 30 cant be justified by the greater good which btw. Grisha didnt even have in mind. He just wanted revange on Marley for killing his sister and was willing to torture and sacrifice his son for that. In fact that was the only reason Zeke was even conceived. Grisha was an absolute pos and he did realise that himself later on. Thats what he had to say to Zeke as an adult: "I'm sorry... I was a terrible father. The things I put you through were so cruel. Its for their greater good, right?
      Obviously all of this is super bad. They all just try to kill each other. Except for Zeke, he tries to kill his people instead which is just as bad. The only one who is actually trying to stop the violence is Armin.
      Also, abandoning your son and turning him into a child soldier is not the same.

    Even though I agree with everything you said, I would argue one thing against that Luffy is not a Hero from his core is that Luffy is still young and seeing the world just like Dragon did before he decided to form the Revolution. There is ONE STRONG theme Oda is going through and that is to make Luffy realize HE NEEDS TO BE A HERO.
    See even though Pre-time skip Luffy was even more selfish in his goals than post-time skip, Luffy started using 'Hero' wording post-time skip. Why would Oda suddenly use Luffy's mouth to say that even though Luffy was literally the same or more selfish pre-time skip. I believe its that when Luffy finally learns the true history and realizes who is the enemy of his friends (which is at this point almost the whole world) he has to take the responsibility of being a Hero. He can't be the freeest man in the world until his friends (world) are happy and fed. In my opinion, that's the story of One Piece is, a boy's journey to learn the suffering of the world and learn to take responsibility and become a hero.
    Frankly that's what Whitebeard last words meant

    • @sohailsadaqat6684
      @sohailsadaqat6684 7 месяцев назад +2

      If you see in hindsight without blaming the Hero tag on some, Luffy has done the same even way more aggressively and fast than Dragon, who is trying to do this for decades and that is to gain support around the world. Luffy already had the support of BIG nations like Alabasta & Dressrosa & fishmen, with so many other islands. Luffy already has support at Reverie which I am not sure even RA have. So when Luffy finally learns about the world and its evils, and declare war, he will have armies and support around the world probably even more stronger and larger than RA

    I think it is worth noting that even serious organizations like militaries will try hard to regain lost commanders and soldiers. Not only is it valuable to regain a trained and skilled commanding officer, but it is a huge blow to morale to treat soldiers as disposable. Building a sense of camaraderie is important in a fighting organization to keep people motivated and cooperative with each other. Ginny was a high ranked officer and presumably a capable combatant, so she would not be someone to just write off as a loss like a regular foot solider. She was also directly close to two of their core commanders, so her loss is a heavy morale blow that obviously eventually cost them Kuma as well. That said, I do think it's reasonable to assume that the revolutionary army maybe had a strategy to try and get Ginny, but she just didn't last long enough for their rescue attempts to come to fruition. An army won't mount a rescue mission with no chance of success or extremely high odds of losses after all. I will also say that being too harsh, cold and indifferent is a very risky thing to do as a commanding officer, and it's very possible to have subordinates lose faith if you don't prove competence and some valuation of their lives. A lot of Dragon's followers seem to trust him a great deal, so I don't think he's thaaat distant. He's maybe just someone who keeps his personal life pretty private.

Just because she is a commander does not mean her life is of greater importance than the other slaves.
