Just popping in here to point out that Varian was a weakness of Cassandra.
She didn't want to fight him, didn't kill him but simply put him out of the way in a prison which seems dangerous but was actually pretty safe because she has complete control over the spikes and thus his cage of which she had the intent of freeing him from as soon as she was done fighting Rapunzel. As she got him out of the way she sings "NOW I have nothing left to lose" -- she had to "lose" Varian before she lost everything.
Plus, despite what she claims, "Despise me, that's fine," she clearly cares enough about what he thinks of her enough to react emotionally when he calls her the villain.

It's so blatantly symbolistic Varien's the former villain who understands Cassandra....but she's so filled with pain and rage that she doesn't care.
It's not symbolistic I think, but it does make a really good natural contrast and it sets Varian up in a unique position to understand her and try to convince her

I love how Varian insinuating that Cassandra is being a villain is kind of what sets her off. Like many people who have done awful, awful things, she justifies it to herself, and in this situation there is some justification for her actions. Her mother abandoned her, she was put upon and underestimated by her adoptive father, Razpunel (although unintentionally) was condescending and unappreciative to her.... the list goes on but she has been metaphorically shit on over and over. She doesn’t see herself as the villain and I think that’s important, she’s settling the score, she’s “taking what she deserves” as it were, and I think that explains why she doesn’t spiral into full on villainy. If she wanted to, she could impale Varian without a second thought, or drop him out of her castle. She doesn’t want to hurt people, she’s just wants respect, recognition and what due to her. She’s not being cruel for the sake of being cruel, she’s doing it because she has been denied so much for so long

He was ready to accept that what he was doing was wrong. He knew that the whole time. But Cass? She said over and over "this is my destiny" "this is what I was made to do", so much that she let herself lose everything. Just because she wasn't willing to accept that what she was doing was wrong. That's what this means, everyone. That's why this song was made, and this is the clear difference between them. He knew he was the villain, she refused to admit it.

You’re right, but in the episode Once A Handmaiden, she says: “Am I the bad guy?” She realized what she was doing was wrong, the only reason she kept doing it was because of the Project obsidian misunderstanding.
The difference between Cassandra’s and Varian’s villain arcs were these things
Varian at first didn’t know what he was doing was wrong, he was just a kid, Cassandra was an adult who knew what she was doing. Along with the fact that Varian had guilt, and on the ship he was ready to take his own life for Corona to be safe, and when he was seeing the hallucinations with the red rocks, it showed he has ptsd from the situation, and even after it, people still saw him as a bad person. Cassandra just told Rapunzel she’s sorry, and everyone took two seconds to forgive her. This song is about Varian warning Cass to not make the same mistake he did, or she’ll regret it. But she didn’t listen to him, and didn’t seem to regret it that much

While I do agree with you, I would like to correct one thing from here:
Varian knew exactly what he was doing. He knew he was the villain but went along with it anyway because he wanted to save his father. In fact in "Ready As I'll Ever Be," he straight up says "I'm the bad guy, that's fine". (He does say "It's no fault of mine, and some justice at last will be served" but we'll get to that later.) Yeah, he is a kid, but I think it's a bit unfair to say that he was clueless of what he was doing. He knew it was wrong and did not care.
Cass and Varian's villain arcs are both similar in many ways, but I'd say that's one of the only places where there's a major difference. They both knew they're doing bad things and they both believed that they were just giving justice because they were wronged, but Cass doesn't acknowledge that she was the villain.
Varien admitted he was a villain all along, even if he believed ppl deserved it anyway

Cassandra was SOOOO CLOSE to being redeemed in "Once a Handmaiden..." but a misunderstanding caused by Zhan Tiri caused this to fail. She redeemed in Plus est en Vous, just like I had a feeling about! She broke down and apologized. Still, both when a villain and when redeemed, you can't help but feel Cassandra's pain. She is heartbroken and depressed, having been cast aside for Rapunzel by her evil mother.
But why did she have to try to take the Sundrop? And why did the moonstone have to be taken out? If it weren't for Zhan Tiri, Cass could have totally kept the moonstone and used it to help others! If Zhan Tiri, or a similar demon, comes back, I hope that Cassandra doesn't fall for it!
@@nicholasdaisyawesomeness1291 I don't think anyone could take the sundrop because Rapunzels power doesn't come from the sundrop from a thing like Cassandras from the moonstone Rapunzel is the sundrop itself as was stated by Varian in Season 1 and Adira in Season 2 and I think Zhan Tiri shouldn't have been able to take the sundrop

But WHY? Rapunzel spent 18 years being psychologically bullied by Gothel, she wasn't allowed out of the tower, wasn't allowed to have a life. In contrast, Cass was raised by the Captain, a flawed but ultimately good man who clearly loved her very much. So much, in fact, that he retired rather than ever be put in a position to hurt her. She seems to also have led a life that was way happier than Rapunzel's over those 18 years.
I understand what you're saying, but although I agree she was depressed, she was also prideful, unreasonable, with a skewed and selfish view of the people around her.
My admiration goes to Rapunzel, Eugene, and the others, for forgiving Cass despite everything she did, all the harm she caused out of misguided pride and unreasonable anger. They were better people than her.

She was though, I think? Varian was reactionary, and driven by desperation. Cassandra was proactive, and driven (at least on the surface) by ambition. Like she said, she knew her path was dark but she thought she knew where her path would end and felt that her fate was something that she had deliberately chosen. Cassandra's approach like that could have been much healthier and likely to succeed I think.
But neither of them really wanted what they were doing, so they both failed, and both of them ended up trying very hard to do their things by hurting other people, so they were still bad.
This song is so beautiful and breaks my heart because smol Varian had a huge crush on her and now he’s just desperately trying to stop her from doing something she’ll regret because he cares so much. Their bond matured to a Big Sister-Little Brother relationship, and it’s even more sad because he’s 16, a KID, trying to make sure one of his heroes Cassandra, at 24, doesn’t turn away from the light because he believes in her so much and doesn’t want her to make his mistakes and ugh I have so many feelinhs

I didn't realize this before, but what's really interesting is that Varian acknowledged that he was a villain while Cass still hadn't realized that. Even in Varian's main villain song, "Ready As I'll Ever Be" he straight up says "I'm the bad guy, that's fine". He directly says that he's the villain but is willing to lose himself for his father, while Cassandra says that she does bad things but isn't a villain because she's doing what's best for herself and its what she's owed anyway

This song really shows what I've always said: No-one is the villain in their story. That why I dont like it when people in shows say stuff like "We're the bad guys" because they wouldn't see themselves as villains, in their minds, the protagonists are the villains.
That I am the bad guy, or you can consider me the bad guy can work really well for some sort of anti-hero, who wants to be seen that way so there is no need for justification, or taking the blame for someone else. But it needs a good execution

Jeremy Jordan is one of the best tenors on Broadway. In case you've been watching TTS on Disney+, he was Tony nominated for originating the lead of Jack Kelly in Newsies (the musical), which you can find on there. Also, just search his name on RUclips if you haven't already. There's tons of good material and he makes an excellent Disney princess.

Although I don't agree with all Cassandra's actions and decisions she is still my favorite character, she is just the most relatable.I really feel bad for cass.

I knew Cass could be redeemed, all this time. But why did it HAVE to end with Zhan Tiri manipulating Cassandra to the point of her trying to take the Sundrop and have the moonstone taken out? Even when she tries to kill Rapunzel, you can see the regret in her eyes... she's angry. I'm glad she's redeemed, but still, hopefully Zhan Tiri NEVER comes back! I do want to see a spin-off series, though, where Cassandra tries to find her own destiny!

This song makes me feel a way I’ve never felt before. It’s comforting and insanely gorgeous and makes my brain shatter then get put back together. My heart melts every time I hear these lyrics. I feel so warm inside when listening to this yet I still get the chills. Every single lyric gets better and better every single second. My favorite part? Well, I feel like a lot of people will agree with me on this. “YOUVE LOST YOUR GRIP AND LOST YOUR MIND, (I’m not gonna looseeeeeee!) ALLS NOT LOST DONT BE SO BLIND! (I REFUSE!!) cut your losses, drop- THE IOUS! (I REFUSE) every time I hear this song I feel like my eardrums fall apart and die and then get reincarnated as a magical pony princess floating on mars with not a worry to worry about at all. This song is one of the many reasons varian is my favorite character. When I listen to this I feel as if my soul is lifting up and grabbing the universe and spitting joy and confusion and hope all around the Milky Way. This song is like a fresh, warm, gooey chocolate cookie. When I listen to this I have the need and urge to walk up to Eden Espinosa and Jeremy Jordan and thank them for letting the juice of these lyrics get inserted into my ears. Nothing exists anymore.
