Well played comment wipe
Legends of Runeterra is actually, legitimately a free-to-play game. Don't have to pay a dime to get a full collection of cards, through daily play and missions.
I only purchased the $5 welcome bundle in Arena and had about 97% of each set completed over 2 years. You can get a near 100% if you are good at draft but I never needed 100%. Arena is definitely f2p you just have to put in the time like any other game.
This is correct. I’ve never made a single purchase and have made multiple meta decks. I don’t even play that often either. It makes me want to give money to Riot.
It's actually hard to buy cards in runeterra
@@joeshmoe66 The time you have to put into Arena to stay competitive is insane, though. It's definitely designed to force you to chose between paying (a huge amount of money), or playing Arena as if it was a job. That's why I stopped playing even though I was already heavily invested and already spent a lot of money on the game. It preys on the consumer in very toxic ways.
Damn that makes me not wanna play mtg arena anymore
I built my first complete Runeterra deck after just one day of playing and a top tier meta deck after one week of moderate play without spending a cent. Unthinkeable in MTGA.
I spent about 2 months for my first complete meta deck in MTGA (doing dailies every single day), then a new expansion dropped and my deck became trash. Talking about izzet phoenix in 2019 just before M20. I hate MTGA.
I played both a lot and:
What they did not mention is the amount of time needed to do the dailies in MTGA is greater than in Runeterra.
In Runeterra, you get 1 quest reroll daily stacking up to 2, and you can stack up to 3 daily quests. Meaning that If I get a quest that is somehow hard to do for my current card set, I can either reroll it instantly or do the other quests to just free space for next daily quest and with it another reroll. This allows me to mostly dodge playing rubish decks to finish quests, and if I really have to, cuz for example I missed a day or two of playing and are at a 3 daily quest cap, I just go play vs AI.
In MTGA, if I get a quest for a color pairing I don't have, and reroll it into another I don't, I am stuck with that quest until I get another reroll or I have to make up some mockup deck to not miss on tommorow's quest. I think in Arena you could stack up to 2 quests thou.
Also there are no bans in Runeterra. No card was ever banned, cards were either nerfed, buffed or rarerly reworked.
Also sometimes a Card was nerfed too hard, and they buffed it back. It happened to Shen for example, where he went from 4 mana 2/6, to 4 mana 2/5, to 4 mana 3/5 and he is in a better place now than he ever was. Although the meta doesn't favor him much right now you can still play him and do well.
I even had just 1 good deck in MTGA and it was Marduu Knights. It was tough to get another.
In runeterra, I had already a deck or two, and when I saw another, I crafted few cards from my shards and had it already. In fact, I have did this few times and now I got lots of decks ready to play. The only limiting factor are champions but you still get tons of them from the weekly vault.
I think they didn't mention the weekly reward vault enough thou.
I got incredibly lucky in draft and managed to get an amazing dimir rougue/mill deck ultra cheap after my first month (i know, i know, i feel dirty every time i play it but it lets me grind 15 wins real quick because people just concede, everyone hates playing against this shitty deck, myself included) but that is waaaay outside the norm
@@DayOfCasual "In MTGA, if I get a quest for a color pairing I don't have..."
Impossible. You get complete decks of every color and color pairing in MTGA. If you are only trying to complete the quest, you don't need a tier-one deck, or ever a tier-three deck.
@@BrotherAlpha While that's true, it makes completing these quests a royal pain in the ass, cause you will lose a lot. The starter decks suck.
I must say, compared to Arena’s economy, Runeterra’s was well thought out. Definitely less greedy, bravo.
It's the only card game I've played that you can easily play meta decks for free
The Professor liked my comment! I’m complete 😌
It took me 3 days to build a tier one deck in legends of runeterra. I just started playing a few weeks ago and honestly it’s the most generous online card game out there.
This. End of conversation
ikr? also in gwent it took me one week to build the best deck in the meta fully transmuted as well
Too generous for greedy businessman at Hasbro
@@diamonddog0016 i didn't play beta at all, but even if it did become greedier, it is nothing compared to magic areeeeena
@@diamonddog0016 maybe a little bit but it could also be that it is divided into different subsystems which gives that feeling, also there are more cards so that slows progression
I was surprised that the occassional Runeterra events didn't get a mention. They are almost identical to season passes, with free and and premium tracks.
It took us so long to finalize this video that both the Spirit Blossom and KDA events happened while we were making it.
Developer: "In order to fund the game should we charge money for the game pieces OR for cosmetics?"

also it's important that the cosmetics are shitty low effort pieces, sometimes down right annoying with the whining ghost dog that has to be muted
Glad to see you make this comparison video.
And like Amy said, this isn’t even close. Like at all.
Legends of Runeterra is so easy to play as a F2Play player that I ended up purchasing cosmetics just because I wanted to support such a good system and already had all the competitive decks so there was no need to buy cards.
I started to play LoR after the prof's recommendation video. I am in love with this game, i've reached to Masters this week. Thanks for show me this fabulous game, Prof. I hope you make more content about LoR in the future. Greetings from Brazil.
I played lor since its release and have all the cards but never got into masters 😢
@@dimaskhadafi2226 just gotta pick a deck you like and learn it's win conditions
I play Runeterra on and off. I've paid $60 total ($20, 3 times) since Beta. After Monuments of Power in October, I had every single tier 1 and tier 2 deck available to play. If I played more often, I would easily have achieved this without spending any money at all.
Meanwhile on Arena: If you can't grind 'em, you won't find 'em.
Lets put it this way: I got all the cards of Runeterra in less than a year without heavy grinding, and it didn't pass more than two days before I crafted any deck I wanted to play and that I lacked cards.
What will it take for us to convince you to try Runeterra?!
I hope you all enjoy the video! Thank you to The Prof for having me on!
SIdeboarding, and better spells. It depresses me that control decks are mostly units.
@@Kool212 the game doesn't need sideboards
@@Kool212 When the time comes when we can build full control decks where majority of the deck are good spells is the day Ezreal is gonna have to be completely reworked cause a nerf wouldn't be simple enough to stop that level of burn he will do, and he's really edging it close to that as it is.
@@SleepyNubis There is plenty of space for him to be nerfed and still functional. Though I’m fine with one card getting reworked to enlarge the available card pool.
@@Kool212 As much as I love control, I believe that the most objectively fun thing in Magic is midrange vs midrange, and Runeterra is designed so in some form or another, that is always the case. It's life draft, there's only control-y midrange, not control. There's no aggro, only faster midrange. It's amazing.
I doubt I'll ever see myself playing Runeterra, but I hope Runeterra ends up becoming way more popular to force Wizard's hand into making Arena less shitty.
I urge you to give it a try and maybe watch a few videos of matches online, the game sseems simple at first it actually has quite a lot of depth and awesome interactions that are fun to work out.
Yeah it's gameplay is a bit odd and is sort of a mix between the Elder Scrolls TCG that flop a little while ago and The Witcher card game. There's so much weirdness going on in that card game mechanically that I'm not quite used to it but that doesn't mean that the online system is bad it's amazing and I wish that I could play it more but it mechanically is so funky that it is not connecting with me
@Dale Macarena sounds like your internet and data sucked
I didn’t think I’d play it either - not a fan of league and I’ve been playing MTG since I was a kid. But on a whim I decided to give it a go and I’ve been blown away by how good it is. I honestly think it is the best competitive digital card game I’ve played by a pretty decent margin. It’s a shame the game isn’t more popular b/c it is so fun, well designed, and doesn’t break the bank.
@Dale Macarena not saying it isn’t popular at all, I just said it’s a shame the game isn’t *more* popular.
I play both and Legends of Runeterra is really more generous!
I stopped playing Arena for Runeterra.
@@sethchapman1425 same, to bad i dropped 100 on arena to build a deck that got banned out.....
@@sonicdueler I didn't drop that much. I also realized if you didn't have ways of doing draft or good decks. You were never going to get out of the slow grind. Yeah the ban on after buying would suck.
I know the breakdown is necessary for people who haven't tried both games but shit I wish it had just ended after Amy said that runeterra is better.
This comment is what I needed to stop there. Thank you.
Mood
At the end of the day, the economy plays a big part in gameplay experience. The fact that LoR is so generous where you are able to get a full set in just a few months, allows for a lot of theory crafting and deck building. Being able to exercise one's creativity through deck building is probably the most fun part of a card game which has always been gated behind boosters and expensive cards, reserved only for the professional players.
Meanwhile it is also important to look at the other side. A lot of us have been ingrained by this terrible economies that we derive a lot of our sense of satisfaction and achievement from creating our dream deck. After getting a full set in LoR, you can potentially lose interest as you desire for the next achievement, the next dopamine hit. You might end up not playing the game until the next expansion hits. This behavior is largely attributed to our ingrained habits developed by these terribly card game with shitty economies. You definitely have to unlearn and learn how to have fun in LoR, learning to enjoy the creative aspect of deck building and theorycrafting.
Fully agreed, and the clone matches are even fun.
You explained that perfectly, holly shit. Same happens with battlepases in other games; once I complete it I lose interest in the game.
I'd argue that the game should be fun to play in and of itself, and that it should be the driving force of a player's enjoyment beyond the deckbuilding. So while a player might not have anything to work towards anymore as far as a personal collection goes once they've completed their collection, there's still a reason to play the game, to want to experience the game itself.
I don't deny that plenty of the fun in a constructed card game comes from building the deck itself. That's perfectly fine, it's a good thing, people _should_ have fun planning out what they want to make, building a deck to do something cool. But I get worried when talk shifts to something that seems as though the game itself is secondary. If players aren't interested in playing the game as much as they are in just theory crafting, then I see that as a bad sign of the game's gameplay.
@@Shenaldrac That's because no matter How good a game is, It won't matter If you aren able to fully experience it. And LoR let's ALL it's players get the most out of It. The game being good or not is subjective: HS players may deslike the lack of crazy RNG, or how priority alternates all the time; MtG players may miss the complexity that an older game has compared to a game that's in it's third set; LoR players will appreciate spell mana and the turn structure (I mean, the game has a 50/50 winrate for going First/second). You can't say that they are right or wrong, but game economy can be put on numbers and it's hard to deny LoR has the best economy for their players.
Ahh its so unfun to not be forced to pay or grind to have good deck. Its nealry painful ): Rito fix game
Legends of Runeterra i have the full collection without paying a single dime. Yeah to me i know whats the best deal.
I've managed to get a 100% complete collection in Runeterra without spending a cent on cards. That would be feasibly impossible on MTG:A unless I spent every waking moment drafting and playing the game.
@@eightywight it isnt about greed at all. riot is also a greedy company charging 100$+ dollars for a single skin bundle in valorant. they believe they will make more money making this game cheap to play which is the module they employ in lol (i think).
@@swiftdragonrider but for casual players, that's the draw. In 10 years of league, I've spent less than 400 dollars. Within HOURS of playing arena, I needed to either commit to playing for 12 hours or pay out. I uninstalled. Runeterra tho, I play about an hour a day and do decent in competition ( I wipe people in norms)
@@MutleeIsTheAntiGod I don't think you understand my point. I am aware that lor is FTP I just finished a match in plat I just think it is dumb to say wotc greedy or wotc bad or lor benevolent and good. They are a business that tries to make money and that is it.
@@swiftdragonrider I got what you mean, but that's my point is that as a casual player, people will look towards the cheaper, easier, more enjoyable option
@@swiftdragonrider your point is both convoluted and dumb. You don't need playmat and sleeves to play digital MTG right? this is just line of code they don't need protection or what so ever, but you need card to play to craft deck jank or competitive. This is not about who is a saint this is about which is more users friendly. In runterra you cant get full collection to play with, make silly deck to play with friend or take their shots against the top dog with minimal time/ money investment some think Arena is poor at. And you don't even have to take my point for it just look how many people quit arena as soon as lor came out, some people are just not hardcore grinder gamer dudes.

The pc version is buggy enough as it is. Also every set release day is full of problems so releasing the mobile version on the same day seems stupid.
I couldn't convince any of my friends to pick up runeterra simply because it's just not mtg. I look forward to LoR being more diverse in gameplay to draw in more fatigued mtg players - the game really deserves it.
I feel that way too, tried LoR but It's missing a little something in order to fully retain my attention. Hope it gets better, I really wish I could have the same fun playing runeterra that I get playing mtg.
Its a new game, still has so much strategies to add.
The problem is not that "it's not Magic". I have played a lot of CCGs apart from MTG. Runeterra stands out in terms of questionable gameplay decisions (like their priority system and a battlefield limited to 6 permanents with no interesting positional mechanics to speak of unlike some other CCGs), and in terms of a very tacky and invasive visual style (those champion level up animations are absolutely atrocious and cannot be turned off). That game has some very objective problems that are the reason why it isn't as popular as it could (probably) be.
@@ivanivanovich1020 Positioning in LOR is pretty important though.
Best example is how you always make Darius hit last. Or how in Shadow Isles decks you position the order of how your units should die (As some cards earn stats after seeing an ally die or a champion level up in combat).
I also like the priority system, as mixed with the mana system, bluffing becomes pretty prevalent in higher elos. Playing cards, fast spells or slow spells passes priority; So you either open attack or wait for your opponent to spend their mana (With the risk of them developing their board) or Open attack (Which leaves your opponent with mana for combat tricks).
@@boxtupos7718 All of these count as minor positional synergies at best compared to other card games in my book. Say, in MMDOC about 80% of spells and all creature combat were completely dictated by the positioning of your cards. In IW most spells and creature positioning involved mindgames about which zone the relevant card will end up in, and in which order, by the time it resolves or combat happens. On top of, you know, having literal simultaneous turns.
I've been playing magic for years, just recently started runeterra and was able to build that exact discard aggro list within a week of downloading the game, with some certaintly that I'll be able to make a second competitive deck soon. In mtga I was pretty much only able to make the somewhat boring boros cycling, but didn't even feel motivated to play with it
Haven't even got past the ad, but I think I know the answer.
hahahahahahhahaha
I made the move to Runeterra about a year ago and I’m so happy I did. LoR has so much more polish, personality, and generosity than Arena it’s crazy. I still love Magic, esp for limited. The larger card pool and deep complexity give it an edge. But not having to deal with mana flood/screw in LoR makes it hard to go back. Great vid! Thanks for the hard numbers and honest takes, esp. coming from magic alums.
Many younger magic: the gathering players ask the question: what is that the Professor is holding during the intro?
This wonderful piece of technology is the grandparent of your current phone.
that is what we hip kids call a cellular phone, or a mobilophone is you're feeling fancy. You could use it to call people on the telephone without ever needing to be near you old fashioned rotary phone, and a good battery could last you long enough to have a conversation of well over 15 minutes. The professor here has a more modern one with an integrated battery so I'm guessing the RUclips thing is really paying the big bucks.
@@MrBe56 no way that "thing" looks like a plastic banana. it can in no way be akin to my glass rectangle.
Worth noting that Legends of Runeterra recently updated their prologue section for new players to include an additional 4 complete decks for free. Granted there are a lot more cards now than at the time of this video, but this gives them a good amount of cards to start off with, and given the rate and flexibility of unlocking new cards, this isn't an issue at all.
The more I play arena, the more I've enjoyed playing runeterra.
... I should try runeterra
It's fun.
@@dreamwalking Fun is subjective. I dislike how the turns play out.
@@ferocis2255 Are you accusing my reply of not being subjective.
@@dreamwalking Nope, I was just saying in general. You can think its fun and others can't. I love the economic model but I can't get immersed in the gameplay then again i'm struggling to enjoy any card game anymore. I watch the channel for nostalgia I guess.
I've played legends of runterra for two months. I spent 40 dollars so far. I logged in, spent twenty dollars, and built the exact deck I wanted. In two months, I have collected half of the total collection. Not just copies, but having full playsets of half the total sets. You get a mythic wildcard every week.
Watching this taught me one thing : it's a good time to be a limited player. I play ( i.e. suffer through) just enough constructed to fuel the habit
@Dale Macarena its arena format in magic the gathering. Drafting a deck from an expansion.
Best way to play magic is with proxy’s and friends
The biggest problem with Arena is that as a standalone video game, it's basic and rarely adds basic videogame features, such as leaderboards, stats, viewable profiles, a good friends list feature etc
You are literally the only person I've seen who made the right critique. The users are all "the economy! the economy!" as if it was such a big fucking deal, when the actual deal is the shit experience MTGA offers as a service.
Shitty friends / dueling UI/UX. Shitty and unclear ranked system (Getting from bronze to gold is virtually the same, since you gain so much more than you lose, *if* you are on a tier that even loses something). No mobile client (in 2020, during a pandemic...). Lackluster profile info (to the point where add ons focus literally on that. I can't believe you can't have a deck-winrate).
I appreciate _a lot_ of what MTGA does for the experience and how to streamline it (autopay comes to mind), but goddamn how do you even design for "f2p" without key multiplayer experiences that make it easy to come back to.
LoR is, imho, a shitty, shallow, lackluster game (kinda like early YuGiOh ... or modern YuGioh, really) that's more dead than alive not 1 year after release. No economic advantage is gonna fix that. But damn, playing magic, online, is basically making a pick between shitty UI/UX MTGO and shitty and underdeveloped UX MTGA.
It's unfortunate that they pretty much stagnated in features aside from adding Brawl.
@@HolyAvgr Your LoR opinion is MEGA cap.
@@HolyAvgr I agree with almost all that you said but mobile/Mac versions should be as low priority as possible. Pandemic doesn't make it easier to play on your phone, you are stuck in your house either way so use your PC:P those versions are important strictly from business stand point as they increase users and possible customers. They should on the other hand focus on PC client, profiling, stats, friendlist/deck sharing, better competetive model.
Instead we got new portraits and small creatures that makes sounds when we play cards:P
It's just a magic simulator. The reason I've stopped playing newer yugioh games is because that's all they are - card game simulators without anything else to enhance the gameplay. For that, I can play the fan-made YGOPro. Whereas before, we had games like Tag Force, where you had an actual story to beat, some role playing and dating sim aspects, etc. Magic Arena is just a shittier version of the paper card game, and that's a shame because it could be so much more.
I have played magic since I was 9 years old. I’m a few days shy of 33 years now, played magic the whole time. After a mere 12 hours playing Runeterra, I must admit it is superior in literally every way. Gameplay, value, polished design... Everything. The one thing mtg had, the physical cards, they’re obsolete in the era of Covid. All hail the new king of card games: Runeterra.
I really love Runeterra selling wild cards. It is such a save when you are just a couple cards short. Plus, Runeterra's draft is so much value and fun, I actually rarely need to buy wildcards.

It's the fact it is tied in with "League of Legends" which is arguably filled with the most cancerous community imaginable. It's nothing like League but the fact it carries that title of "The League of Legends card game" it makes a lot of people turned off by it.

THREE quests daily on Arena?
We wish!
The game gives just ONE quest per day and you can store up to three at a time (any additional quests that would be stockpiled are instead lost).
Arena expects you to play at least once every three days

I stumbled upon this video by accident, but I thought it was so cool! I'd love to see a version of this for Gwent! Keep up the awesome videos!!
I would be so pissed if someone interrupted my game of Legends of Runeterra like that.
My experience with digital card gaming started with the now sadly deceased Elder Scrolls Legends. That game was so criminally underrated. Going to try Runeterra. I play Arena here and there but it just feels like such a grind if you don't want to pour money into the lottery machine.
"many magic the gathering players (who have yet to touch LoR) ask the question..." that is the only accurate way to phrase it, cause holy moly is it not close to being close
Amy is 100% right. It's Runeterra. Always has been, always will be ! Great information video!
Runeterra is hands down the best TCG in the entire market, physical or digital. The game is so absurdly good value to play for free and the mechanics and visuals(both art and animations) are S++ and the best I've ever seen. I've been playing magic for over a decade, and it was the only TCG I ever kept with all this time, but I cannot justify playing on Arena, the monetization system is completely pathetic.
As shit as Arena is, Runeterra just doesn’t come close to scratching the itch that MtG does for me. I want to like it so bad, but every experience I’ve had with it has just been meh.
@@SengokuTheGouda Honestly, I'll take "meh" over the absolute rage I feel every time I see mana flooding in my opening hand. I don't think that any other game on this world has made me angrier than MTG.

Think I'm going to give LoR a go, I too burned out on Arena, I still love MTG in paper but as my LGS is closed atm as here in the UK we are back in full lockdown I can't play paper. Hasn't stopped me from buying paper cards in lockdown haha.
I recently wanted to return to Hearthstone and, well, all my cards were useless, I just imagined how painful it’ll be to grind for weeks to get at least something decent in the meta. So... I downloaded Runeterra and man, wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. It’s actually a tragedy that this game flies under the radar. The economy is amazing, the gameplay is smooth and polished, the mechanics are so well though out, you could do amazing things there. And goddamn those animations. But I think Hearthstone will be forever more popular just because of its extremely simple mechanics. A 5 year old can play that without any problems, given a meta viable deck.
Sorry for the random comment even thought it’s a video about MTG vs LoR. Guess I’ll watch it now.
Thank you so much for the video and the collaboration!

I keep hearing people complaining about arena economy. I'm a casual free to play player and I have no problem at all with it. I think the only people who should complain are content creators who need to have a complete collection of cards. I hated a lot of stuff wizard did in the last years but I can't find any flows in Arena (excluding random bugs).
Nice video a really fresh perspective on investment costs. It's cool that a professional gamer without a game affiliation could watch this video and make a fairly well educated decision based on their needs.
I dont really affiliate or go out of my way to support riot anymore personally, but I would now at least consider sharing this video with a friend who is looking to get into an online card game.
Fine, fine, you got me! I'll give LoR a try.
How'd it go?
@@noox13 It's an awesome game
MTG-lite I'd call it
@@arenkai
Fair enough, lol.
Great video!
1 small note is that the Regional tournament rules section is slightly off. The decks CAN share a region, they just can't have the same region pair and can't have overlapping champions. Small distinction, but the video is technically incorrect on that front
Check out the 5th Edition of Vampire: The Eternal Struggle. It's not a digital game, but for 80€ you get 5 decks out of the box that you can replay with a decent variation. It's like commander on steroids.
I have been playing runeterra, doing dailies, but not crazy heavy play and am 100% complete.
I also spent more on cosmetics in LoR than I did on arena, so lol.
So my permanent headcannon is The Professor starts off all his conversations with "Many Magic the Gathering players.."
Best thing of this video was seeing The Night Circus in the background. I read that book because the professor "mutely" recommended it after the Ravnica Allegiance booster box game, and it became instantly one of my favorite of all time. Just seeing the cover makes me want to re-read it now.
I really hope anyone that watches this video decides to get into Runeterra. I only downloaded it last night and I'm having a blast. I'd love to see this game get way more popular. Magic will probably always have my heart, but if I'm playing online, I'm not playing Arena, MTGO, Hearthstone, or Gwent, I'm playing Legends of Runeterra.
i've played runeterra... well i prefer mtga. But there is 2 other tcg online that catched my interest : one is based on elders scroll and have a very nice "2 side" board. the system is very unique and tactical deph is great.
and another one is god unchained, closer to runeterra but with greater deph and interesting blockchain base. The bad point, player base is a bit low... but it grows up.
I started playing LoR 4 days ago ( as green as I was when I first bought a Yugioh TCG booster 15 years ago.) . With 30$ one time investment ( 50% of a AAA release ) + all the stuff I got just for playing ,I can make 2 ladder viable decks ( skill and meta CHOICE are only variables of how high I can climb ) - 4 days and an equivalent of an online service game price ( example Overwatch 29 euros ) ... 0 weekly vaults opened; which will pretty much round up the third deck. I've played pretty much all of the card games worth playing and I must say ... there is no real comparison, LoR stands out BIG time in this, most important, aspect.

"Sir this is a Wendy's."
I left Magic for runeterra around the start of the Ikoria set and have barely looked back. God the economy is So pleasant, i'm actually happy to give them money for cosmetic stuff.
As someone who competed in the legends of runeterra first seasonal masters tournament, and someone has played MTG for over a decade.
LOR is 1000000 times cheaper and better.
Arena had a great f2p economy especially with events around Ixalan block until they decided the generous prize support “wasn’t fun” for the player base and went full greed. I still haven’t touched arena since that day.
Why am I playing Magic Arena again?...
For a sense of pride and accomplishment /s
stockholmes syndrome
You enjoy playing Standard /Historic
And a lot of disposable income / time.
You love magic and can't play face to face, probably
@@felipepizarromardones5648 Pretty much this. I realised im not even hyped for Kaldheim, since I am out of touch with magic since the full move to digital.
It's also worth noting that for two of the Runeterra Tier 1 decks showcased (go hard and burn aggro) both contain champion cards that come in the starter collection.
Both Elise and Jinx come with 2 copies for a brand new player, so the actual investment is even smaller for those decks.
I clicked on this cause if it was arena I would have to find the portal back to my home dimension.
Hi professor I am an avid commander player but when it comes to video games Arena never hit the pot with me but since I heard of LoR (from you if I may add) back in March it has been a roller coaster for me, I have been playing non stop, what a game! I uninstalled Arena and I am playing around diamond level in LoR and loving the game more and more. How much money have I spent in legends of runeterra? $0 so cheers and thanks, greetings Profesor.
Thanks for the video! I'll give legends a try now. Also, please consider fasting instead of ordering pizza and use that $20 to BUY SINGLES at you LOCAL GAME STORE! Where did I learn this?
As an Expedition (draft) only player in Legends of Runeterra that has been active since launch, I have all of the cards available, just through region rewards (which I've already completed for every region) and the weekly vaults; I earn about 10-11 levels per week, based on playing 6-9 games a day on Expedition. I can't speak for the similar experience in Arena, but I'm very happy with my progression and experience in LoR.
This is excellent. I might be hyper-cynical here, but I feel like the Arena economy won’t change because people will keep paying for it. Money talks.
i can say ive been playing runeterra and mtgo about the same time (which is about 6 months), completely free to play, and i have a full collection for runeterra and only enough cards for a single meta deck in mtgo.
It's like the prof waked up one morning and said:"Oh boy! I wonder what's the easiest way to lose a debated. :D".
I've only paid for the begginer pack of LoR at the very beggining of the game to have a small kickstart and support the devs of the game. Haven't spent anything since then and I've just recently got the whole collection, save for the most recent cards that just got out but I'm about to complete those too, and a new expansions with a whole new region is coming next month.
Truly a great economy system.
Speaking as a free to play mtga player I dont have an issue with the economy currently. Is it perfect? No but still allows me to play mtg daily for free. I've made it to mythic a few times without dropping money into the game. Just giving my opinion
A few times lmao
I agree. Magic is the best game IMO and Arena is the cheepst outlet by alot
I got 3 Champions in my last weekly vault in Runeterra. That's your entire mythic collection right there.
I loved Amy's commentary I just wish that she looked at the camera, it feels like I'm being presented to rather than spoken to. Great video! :)
Agree
I see that Amy has read the War of the Spark novels so we don't have to. Bless her saintly heart!
It was a sacrifice I was willing to makem
It'll be interesting to count "positive" vs "negative" opinion videos for MTG on the professor's channel. I gather the -/+ proportion would be such that it grows geometrically over the past few years... This would be a good indicator of the state of the game from a player's perspective!
I got to Masters in LoR without ever paying a dime
Big fan of whoever edited this video. I'm very impressed!
Legends of Runeterra definitely has the better economy, but sadly I by far prefer Magic as a game. Even with modern magic design fucking up standard with almost every new set, I still enjoy magic's style of gameplay more than runeterra's.
yea it took me a long time to understand lor because it is so different from the other card games I played.
Yeah this is where I'm at. I came into this video basically knowing what the end would be, but MTG is just the game I have more fun with. Maybe it's not having to build around a champion, but I'm not sure. MTG just feels better.
I'd enjoy MTG so much more, if it didn't have the ridiculous mana flood/lack of mana issues. I understand it can't be any other way due to how mana has to interact with the different colors, but it's just infuriating.
I'm always on the fence about buying into new games similar to magic arena, but I gotta say you guys make a very compelling case for legends of runeterra. Being able to drop 30 bucks and already have a top meta deck sounds incredible, and it just makes me wish other games had that player friendly experience! Thanks prof, and thanks amy! I'm gonna go try it out right now!
I liked mtg arena despite the buggy client, but I didn't feel like forking out hundreds of dollars every rotation. It could be way more popular if they had went with a more sensible pricing model.
You dont need to. Arena is hard at the beggining but after a while you can have multiple decks without spending money if you know how to spend your gold and wildcards. I never spent a dime on this game, have every meta deck on standard. 3 meta decks on historic. More than 15 wildcards for each mythic and rare slot and also around 50k gold for kaldheim.
@@clrl936 idc really about building decks I just wished the prizes for limited were a bit more generous. The only reason I spent money was to draft once in awhile especially when I couldn't go to my lgs
@@clrl936 I keep up with the game with 2 accounts. One is completly f2p and I draft each time I collect 10k coins, the other one I spend 20 to 30 dollars each set rotatiton
Glad to see TCC partnering with Amy for a video.
Players definitely do not receive three quests per day in Arena. They receive one quest per day, and are allowed to have up to three active quests.
"Many Magic the Gathering players.... would like a pepperoni with extra cheese please..."
I think I found a good way for myself. I play magic in paper (or right now with a programm that simulates playing in paper, because of corona) and for in between I play LoR on my tablet.
Holy cow I'm early to class for once.
Hey professor!
_The 90's Antenna Cellphone was a nice touch Prof._
Arena was not built for Johnnys/Jennys. Once I figured that out, I quit.
Got into LoR after the Prof talked about it in a previous video.
Was so blown away with how well structured it was and how fair the economy is that I will never touch MTG Arena again!
MTG for me is now just about playing Commander (actual cardboard) with friends once in a while.
I’ve played Legends of Runeterra since January of last year and it’s sooooo amazing!!!!
came here by your comment on the Secret Lair membership video. Not regreting it :)
I was floored when I opened LoR and just had the option to buy singles. It's just unheard of in this genre. Somehow.
16:12 so funny! Thanks for the laugh Prof and Team.
