    It is very hard for the workrooms after a show, we go into a sort of shock as suddenly all our 'babies' are taken away to be used in the press and commercial showrooms and we are left sitting in the middle of scraps and patterns. Luckilly the rythm is such that it doesn't last long and we begin to work on the next collection. First we have to sort out the patterns, make sure that no pieces or info is missing, then sort through the fabrics then the threads and then recover the work tables and generally wipe away the previous collection. At Chanel they use the workrooms to make the garments that are on order from clients in couture so there is an overlap. I remember doing a coat for Karl that had 6 metres of silk chiffon in each metre of trim made by Lemarié and we needed 16 metres of trim for the coat ! We made two for the show and one for Linda Evangelista as a gift.

      Hi Stephanie! Could you tell us the secret of how to be an apprentice in these haute couture houses? I am dying for it

    • @TheFiown
      @TheFiown 4 года назад +46

      @@0608jeffrey Hi Jeffrey, well in the past I had two apprentices, one is in Hollywood now and the other is head of workrooms at Chanel. In Paris you have to be in a fashion school and you Apply to a fashion couture house for an apprenticeship as part of your training. My two did three days in house and two days in school but were allowed more time in house during collections. Both of my apprentices I gave garments to do completely but mostly in these houses you get just to help out here and there. SO you have to be in the 'system' in order to get a foot in the door. You can also do internships but these are usually reserved for 'friends' of the personnel or the kids of clients etc. It's a tough world to get into but you have to persevere and set yourself a goal. My 'boy' apprentice is like my son and we travelled together to India and Brazil and we are in touch all the time, I have known him since he was 17 ! I Don't have any contacts in these houses anymore as I am out of the system, retired. Good luck.

      Stephanie, Thank you so much for explaining to me, a little tiny keyhole view into the industry. You must've made the impossible possible in your time there, as I would believe, others of the same level done so as well 😍 It amazes, incites, makes my brain go on incredible adventures as to how the pieces came about - not just the drawings.. the rooms in which the items are created and it amuses me greatly (not in a bad way, a happy filled way) how much you all used science ( ie physics, solids, entities not solid at all, masses of varied texture and weight to create an object to behave in a certain way) plus the creative heart and soul and ability to meld these seemingly disparate things in a harmonious fashion.
      I've always adored our vestements, not just for the latest thing.. mostly for the ingenuity of those in the ateliers and those involved. especially when, I see things created and think to myself, ooh.. i think i saw something like this .. just like a noblewoman's chemise most likely florentine.. ooh hang on.. wrong.. look at that black work and someone put in a bit of something else which makes it hang all frouffy like a 17th century mercantile.. but slimmed the armsyces and rear upper torso a lot.. so its proportionally perfect 🥰🥰🥰 and then, wow us with something else totally different and make it work ❤️❤️❤️

    Haute couture of today looks much more elaborate and painstaking than that of the 1920s, 30s, etc. Karl Lagerfeld seems to have felt the same way. I remember reading a quote years ago where he said that the haute couture of past decades was more like the highest boutique-level ready to wear of today. Looking at vintage Chanel and other designers in books and museum exhibits, it appears to be the case. Today's haute couture is almost otherworldly in terms of lavish detail and precision.

    Fabulous behind-the-scenes access to the Chanel atelier. Reminiscent of CNN’s Style with Elsa Klensch, but with the playful Loïc point-of-view!
    Those little jackets are perfection.
