You're a really crazy guy, I love your videos! I just look at the steering tube with concern. So that the tube does not penetrate your body in the event of an impact, you should consider a telescopic design or something like an compression basket, for example made from a tin can. Best regards from Germany from Peter

As for the electronics, you should just release the initial schematics of the base car and then a separate set on how to add the electronics to it. At least then you can justify having a pause between the two sets of instructions.
With that idea in mind, it would be nice to have an add-on to extend the front of the car out specifically to solve the storage issue, functioning like a trunk, it would be a nice little plug and play addition to the car.

My brother, dad, & I built a wooden go-cart from the boy scout plans in 1978. Solid front axle that pivots in the center. Steers with a cable & pulleys to the steering wheel. Solid rear axle driven by chain & 5hp Briggs & Stratton. Brakes was a 2x4 on door hinges against the back tires with cable to brake peddle. Still runs great.

Like a square shape with a few bars running across and a little lip at the bottom. And then held off of the body of the car using Munsen rings. Easy to make with just hand tools!

I'm not sure about the camber discussion: I think if you're feeling fine with the handling then it's a good setup. the only place I think camber might be necessary is the forces on the wheels during cornering. I know it's been done to death with the rear wheel and that the small-diameter wheels are quite stiff, but I'm more wondering about the bearing longevity with the lateral forces, though the same question comes to mind with a cambered setup...
the car's looking just lovely! keep at it.

Dear Tim, I'm usually not of the worrying type, but that steering column looks like it could become the _Great Impaler 3000_ once one would hit a wall / tree.
How about having the steering barrel mounted directly to the steering wheel and lengthen the wires, using a few more pulleys to redirect its path from steering wheel to the axles? This surely will increase friction and decrease directness due to cable stretching, but might be safer. Aaaaand it opens up the possibility to have the steering wheel angle adjustable ;)

    • @wayoutwest-workshopstuff6299
      @wayoutwest-workshopstuff6299  8 месяцев назад +1

Well I'm not saying you're wrong, but there is a big wheel stuck on the end of the column, so it would have to be something spectacular to actually impale anyone. I will keep looking for alternatives though.. : - )

Longer Tang and Cleavis to remove the need for bird mouth cut.
Thicker steering cable . Thin wire will stretch. Oh and water ingress in to steering boxes will weaken structure over time. Resulting in catastrophic failure. Anyone see that one coming.

    • @wayoutwest-workshopstuff6299

Well now..! A longer clevis would throw out the Ackerman, that's stainless steel brake cable, specifically designed not to stretch, and I would agree with you about the water in the box - if it had a waterproof seal on the bottom bearing (it doesn't). I considered adding breathing holes in the sides (easily done), but they're just not needed.

Take a part, any part, draw the plans to be simple and easy. Not so complex that you’ll need an engendering degree just to make a cut.

One advantage mentioned that it would eliminate the danger of a long steering column being thrust into the driver in a frontal crash but that is not my motivation.

Really like the way this build is going.
The Fairtube link is also interesting.

    Hello Tim
Can you please tell me where you found the idler wheels that appear at exactly three minutes 22 seconds into this video.
    Thanks, Dan in Boston.

I would say a simple electrical schematic would be useful because what one person calls easy another can call rocket science.

Great project , and I am sure plenty of people would love to have a go at building it, basic wiring circuit colour coded would make things easier for many. Good fun project and very practical, dose it need any kind of licence e.c.t for road use in the UK.

The UK has the same rules as we have - so it's legal for anyone 14 years old and up

Instead of the plastic pipe you can just stack disks of plywood , drill the middle and sand the outside smooth on a belt sander by rotating it on a piece of all thread by hand or chucked in a cordless drill.
Then put a larger disk on each end for Flanges.

yes, but much heavier. I did make one out of sterling board but then someone would need to go and buy a quarter sheet of that too..

@@wayoutwest-workshopstuff6299 I should have known you'd already tried that.
I'm guessing you also thought about reducing the weight by drilling/cutting out some "speed holes" before the glue up.
You could put it in the plans as an alternative for anyone who has some wood from other projects or wants a more rugged version.
Of course I know that keeping the plans simple might be more important.
Plastic pipe just seems weak to me, especially after cutting it open to fit the car.

Just a side question here, what happened to your garlic rot? Did you ever find out what happened? Did you lose your entire crop ?

Please think about fuses in your electrics. They care your car to not get on fire because of shortcut or defekts in the instruments, lights ...
