    The movie was fine, could've been better. To me the pros outweigh the cons. But I seriously hope that the standalone films, suicide squad and justice league films are more well put together. This I can forgive because they wanted to set everything up super fast. Now that that's out of the way, concentrate on making good films and not setting up the next 15 movies

      +swampthing94 I agree, I mean I actually enjoyed the movie and I watched it twice. It was gutsy of WB to try something different. Having said that, there were lots of plot problems with the movie but I still gave BVS 7.5 out of 10.

      trusting Snyder after this is a bad idea. I wish them the best anyway but in no way was this a good set up. they really could have done a good bvs movie with the email scene still there, they chose not to. I feel the saddest for people who think the extended cut is going to be much better as well.

      +Wally Vasquez The point is that Snyder is just an employee. He's no James Cameron or Spielberg. You can't pin all the movie problems on him. For example, he certainly is not responsible for the script and I'm sure he didn't edit the movie all by himself. Not even Peter Jackson did that with LotR. Unlinke a poem or a painting, a movie is and has to be a collective creation. I'm more inclined to pin the problems of the movie on Warner than on Snyder. Not saying he didn't do some things wrong, but I believe it's mostly not his fault.

    I feel bad for Greg... He really seems to think that he loves it, but he's getting so defensive at anything Colin says it's hard to believe that he actually likes it. It seems like he's teetering on the edge of just admitting it's not a good movie. It's certainly an okay or mediocre movie but I don't know how ANYONE can think this is a good movie.

    • @brandonkylemarks
      @brandonkylemarks 8 лет назад

      Agree, Batman has been my favorite character of any kind since lil Mike Keaton was in the suit, but after Greg's trailer reaction I was honestly more worried about it letting him down than I was about me liking the movie. It's good that he and others liked it, but he must be so bummed that the majority of people thought the film was incoherent trash. The dream DC universe movie squandered in its first movie. Feel so bad for the dc hardcore, batman has survived worse but superman has work to do to win over the public and this movie really did him no favours.

      Zombie Ducklings I personally think it is OK and expected it from superheroes. Here is how you look at it. Bad Guy kills people>Hero stops Bad Guy and puts Bad Guy in jail>Bad Guy breaks out of jail>Repeat. That is why out of all the things in comics I thought that was the dumbest. They call something Justice for a reason. Don't let something that is logical make you hate Batman.

    1. Main stream audiences are way smarter than you give them credit for. Ultimately they want to be entertained.
    2. This movie does not hold your hand. I am not a DC comic book reader and I took the time to fill in the blanks.
    3. Of course Cavil and Afleck are going to support the film. What are they supposed to say? "This film sucks, you guys are right."
    4. Christopher Nolan is a key producer and provides plenty of notes to the movie.
    5. Leaving the Nolan universe behind is the right decision. It needs to be it's own thing. You can't switch out all of the actors and pretend it is in the same universe.
    6. This movie was made for fans because of the connections to darkseid, motherboxes, flash, aquaman, easter eggs. So those fans enjoyed the film better than the average movie goer.
    7. BvS is not terrible, but there is plenty that could have been explained better.
    8. I like marvel movies but they seem to always play it too safe. This movie took chances, it was weird, it was dark, they killed the main character... it has me really excited for what is to come. It's not perfect but it is art.

      Yeah I kind of agree, I liked Ben overall but I don't feel like he really captured the intelligence of the character, nor did we really see much of his personality outside of being grumpy all the time. Hopefully his solo film will give him a chance to really go all out with the character.

    Lex's motivation: There’s a reason Lex is so inclined to bring his father up in conversation so constantly… His father was abusive, driving Lex to not only despise him, but form some pretty warped opinions about the notion of a god existing. In enters Superman, who challenges Lex’s worldview just by being. He is someone Lex has to prove a falsehood. “If God is all good, then he cannot be all powerful, and if God is all powerful then he cannot be all good.” Everything he does in the movie is in service of exposing Superman as a fraud, either by killing him (thus proving he isn’t all powerful) or by making him compromise his morals (thus proving he isn’t all good).
    Luthor made some last-minute adjustments to his plan towards the end, as he didn't plan on Batman's laying waste to Lexcorp and taking off with the Kryptonite, but even this gets worked into the overall scheme. He knows there's only one reason Batman would take the Kryptonite, after all, so he sends Superman against him. If Batman prevails, it all worked out. If Superman wins, Lex gets payback on the Bat and ensures he won't be meddling any further, and even beyond that, Batman's bought him time to unleash Doomsday.
    ------------------------------------
    Batman's motivation: After having lost Robin and seen all the people that worked for him die, and get maimed during the Black Zero Event, he's not in a good place. The Robin thing represents the 20 years in gotham that he thinks hasn't amounted to anything because criminals are like weeds (actual quotes from the movie). The Black Zero thing is Superman has WAY too much power, and should he decide to, he can burn the whole place down and nothing would be able to stop him.
    Now bring those two together and you get what drives Batman in this movie. 20 years in Gotham taught him that people don't stay good. If Superman is anything like a person, he won't stay good and there'd be nothing to stop him. Not only that, but stopping Superman is the one thing he can see himself doing that matters. Killing Superman would be his legacy, like his hunter ancestors before him.
    ------------------------------------
    Superman's motivation: It's actually the same as it was in Man of Steel. He's reactionary. He's just a guy trying to do the right thing. Superman is the ideal a farmer from Kansas created, and is the ideal Clark Kent the person is trying to live up to. He's not Superman (at least not yet), he's TRYING TO BE Superman. His whole thing in this movie was even though he was putting his best effort into being the savior and the paragon of righteousness that Jonathan told him he could be, the world was still turning on him: nothing he did went without scrutiny.
    What drove Superman all movie was just trying to do the right thing.
    ------------------------------------
    Lois: She's a reporter. She finds good stories and reports them. She loves Clark. She tries to help him.

    From what i can tell Colin's biggest problems with the movie is that it's not the Dark Knight Trilogy but much like Nick was saying those were good movies but they were bad Batman movies. For someone who shits on comic book fans so much Colin actually has a lot in common with them considering the idea that they are both afraid of change in terms of any franchise they enjoy.
    Colin's point about why not make the justice league in the Nolandverse doesn't really make any sense because things like superman and wonder woman would not fit in that universe at all. This movie wasn't perfect by any means but not everything has to be a Noland style movie those movies already exist and can be enjoyed at any time and honestly for all the problems this movie had batman was not one of them if anything this Ben Affleck version of batman is far more interesting than anything that Christian Bale and Christopher Noland did with the character.
    Something I've come to realize that i don't even think Colin is aware of yet is that Colin isn't really a Batman fan he is actually a Christopher Noland fan and there's nothing at all wrong with that but at the same time there is a difference and i think he has yet to distinguish that difference.

      I wouldn't compare the two because they're completely different films, but if we must... The plot of Force Awakens was much more coherent than BVS, character motivations were made apparent and made sense ,the film was well paced, the acting was good, etc. I'm not very familiar with the Star Wars franchise and yet I left the theater with a pretty clear understanding of what I had just witnessed. Being a hardcore Batman fan, I walked out of BVS very confused as to what I had just witnessed. But that's just me...

    I was hoping they would build up to this amazing dynamic where everyone believes that Superman is too powerful to not be put in check and its like these two different brands of justice and then they A) did an awful job of setting that up and B) at the last second they completely threw away the little build up they created and said "oh, Superman, I got your mom, now fight" and so the fight meant nothing and I didn't care.

  • @bigbluebackontop9121
    @bigbluebackontop9121 8 лет назад +3

    What are the guys on the left talking about? There's a reason behind everything that happens in the movie. Maybe the plot is too dense for it to sink through your dense skulls. This is Man of Steel 2 starring Batman. Look at it in that light and you can see the motivation behind the characters. Do I need to spell it out? If so then I will.
    Superman's Motivation: Live up to his father's view of what he should be to the world & protecting his love interest. Is that so far fetched?
    Batman's Motivation: Retribution for the destruction of Metropolis and to provide a check for someone he views as unchecked. Is that so hard to understand? I think not.
    Lois Lane's Motivation: To try to color public opinion of Superman who is her love interest. Is that so hard to understand? I think not.
    Lex Luthor's Motivation: He planned to kill superman himself but after Batman steals the Kryptonite he wants Superman to kill Batman for him of for them to kill each other therefore getting rid of a rival in Bruce Wayne and a potential problem in Superman. Plus when you watch it again, you see that Lex already knows who Batman is and intended to partner up with Wayne against Superman. He says "maybe we could partner up on something. My R&D is up to all kinds of no good."
    Maybe the haters who don't even know about the comics should get their detective hats on and try reading between the lines and pick up on the subtext. This movie isn't for airheads who need the entire story narrated for them LMAO!!!

    For a lot of people who didn't understand Lex Luthor's motivations, you have to look at his dialogue towards the beginning and some of the stuff he talks about.
    In the first few scenes Luthor appears in, he talks a lot about his father, about how great his father was and the legacy left behind. The way Lex talked about his father is I'm sure how Lex Sr. is remembered by a lot of people because the Senator he's talking to doesn't question it. It is clear that from Lex's point of view, his father was the idol to many. As we later learn, Lex had been physically abused by Lex Sr. which may or may not have led to his mental issues, or exacerbated them. In any case, Lex had it in his head that no one, even as someone as revered as his father, was above corruption, that there are no such things as Gods.
    Enter Superman, who towers from above with superhuman powers and is worshipped by people around the world as a God-like figure. We know this from all the scenes of Superman saving people and people reaching out to him as if he were the saviour of all mankind. But Lex doesn't believe in Gods and he wants more than anything to prove that the Gods people believe in are not all they appear, that they can be corrupt.
    Lex wanted Superman and Batman to fight, yes, but his reason is to prove that Superman can be corrupt, that he could be manipulated to kill an innocent man. And what better man to represent humanity than Batman? The epitome of potential of humans. More driven than any other individual, achieving what few ever will, Batman represents the potential of man to become more than what he is. If Batman, the representative of humanity is killed by Superman, it does two things: prove that Gods are not what people believe they are, and two, Superman is truly a threat since not even the greatest human could defeat him. Even if Batman were to defeat Superman, that also proves Lex's point about Gods are corruptible.
    Yes, it's not explicitly state in the movie and they could have done a better job of showing Lex's true motivations, but I think that the foundation is there.

    The key is to understand that the audience needs (and now demands) context. Plot, motivations, empathy towards characters... A story. If studios went back to this starting point, this and all super hero movies would be satisfying. Comic books have been around for along time; super hero movies, not so much. I mean, yes, they have been, but not as long as to make such an audacious move to include everything in a sequel such as Batman V Superman. The title itself should have been enough to make a compelling story! Still, there is something that is missing... something called passion. Passion and love for the source material.

      Differing opinions are fine. Colin is a curmudgeonly 85 year old man, and just hates everything for the sake of hating things, Tim is a youngin', which is why he loves all of the cartoony marvel films, because they are super happy and have a lot of FLASH/BANG, Greg is the DC fanboy and Nick is the married guy who is just happy go lucky. None of that is bad, it just makes for a funny discussion.

    I thought the driving force behind the movie's plot was Lex Luthor's mental scarring due to his abusive father. Lex's father (who, from what I gathered, was the original Lex Luthor) placed himself as a god before his own son, leading Lex grow up to be an overachiever, resentful or authority and someone who hates the notion of not being in control, of being at someone else's mercy. When Superman is revealed, Lex sees him as the embodiment of everything he despises and he, just like Batman, takes steps to kill what he fears.
    The plot twist is actually in the fact that his plan hinged on the leverage he had due to his knowledge of both Superman and Batman's identities - which I thought was pretty cool. It has been done before and worked wonderfully in Batman's Hush storyarc.
    The thing I'm really interested about is how Darkseid was tapped into the Kryptonian ship and could influence Lex through there. It's pretty clear that's what happened, but I'm not sure on the how and why... Which should get me in the theaters for the sequel.

    • @omegalock3549
      @omegalock3549 8 лет назад +1

      Yeah he said it pretty clearly in his meeting with superman. From the way his father raised and abused him, he started thinking if god exists, he can't be all good and if he's all good, he can't be a god. So when people started worshipping superman like and all good god, lex set out to prove himself right.

    I love how civil your discussions are. Everyone has great points, and it's great to listen to. In regards to Lex, when he learned everything from the Genesis chamber (possibly including Apokolips/Darkseid and how to bring Zod back), I want to believe that the Genesis Chamber told Lex that Doomsday would listen to him or at least, it was supposed to. As soon as Doomsday emerges, Lex approaches it as if he were going to give it a command, but Doomsday immediately went for a kill and Superman had to save him. Lex's plan was to use his Doomsday pet to kill Superman and rule the world.
    When his plan went wrong, we get the deleted scene of Lex in the Genesis Chamber probably asking why it didn't work and got Steppenwolf (maybe) with mother boxes telling Lex of another force powerful enough to take down Superman, Darkseid.
    Also, that Steppenwolf deleted scene didn't actually have any physical New God stuff. If you look closely, they are materialized the same way Jor-El materialized the history of Krypton in Man of Steel.

    This is a movie that you need to see and form an opinion for yourself. It is definitely not a perfect film, yet it doesn't deserve a 29% RT score. and that 3 hour cut may fill in some of the blanks and will probably clear up some of the problems for people. The movie does not hold your hand and is hard to follow for some people.
    I loved the movie 8.5/10

    • @reevohere

      RT score isn't an average of critic scores. It's an approval rating. So, of all of the critics that reviewed it, 29% of them approved of it.

    I don't understand why one of them thought that there should have been a movie before this one... erm did you not see 'Man of Steel'?!?! This was pretty much a follow on from that. I think some people who feel confused after watching this should watch it again as it helped me see and understand the direction they are going with this. I did hate Lex first time round but am loving his character more after watching it again.
    Aflek is awesome as Batman... the fight scenes had me giddy as it reminded me of Arkham Asylum. Doomsday had me worried for a moment until his bones started to appear... wanted more in that fight though. The fight between Batman & Superman was pretty cool with lots of Dark Knight Return references.
    The flash scene got me baffled at first but I kind of think that Batman wasn't having a dream (nightmare) at all and it was an image from the future which he experienced just before the flash turned up. I can prove this... if you watch just as Batman wakes up after seeing the flash, bits of paper are still flying around meaning the flash was actually there! ;-)
    The video clips showing flash and cyborg were cool but I agree with their Aquaman comment though, it was the worst bit for me. Would have been much better if they had linked him to the oil rig disaster in MoS instead.
    Overall there were loads of easter eggs for the Comic and Animated fans. I advise watching it for a second time and remember that it's DC not Marvel (light and colourful) so I wasn't expecting much humor in it which could have put some people off. It's not like Christopher Reeves' Superman or Michael Keaton's Batman movies had much comedy in them but they were still considered great movies! But I wouldn't expect them to get actors to portray the same characteristics as it wouldn't work in todays movies hence why i enjoyed the struggle Superman was facing between being Superman at all and why Batman saw he as a threat at first. The movie overall made sense to me but I guess for all the hype it gave a lot of people were expecting more from it. The only thing which spoilt it for me was the trailers as they showed all of the best bits.
    Looking forward to the next installment and the directors cut of this movie in July!!!

    Just seen it a fifth time. I have some issues with it but not that many. There are things that could've been different that i think would've made the film better received but overall I thought it was a good film. I personally enjoyed it more than most movies, enough to watch it five times. I see coherency where a lot of people don't, I understood and made sense of things that didn't make sense for people, and I see motivations where people don't. It's all about how you interpret the film, because you can go into the greatest movies of all time with a negative mindset and pick it apart. I think the biggest problem with this movie is that it is not as easily accessible for a lot of people even though it was for me so defending this movie is not hard for me.

      ***** Who said I don't watch "better" movies? Not everybody has the same opinions. I just happen to be able to get a lot out of this movie, considering it was more thought provoking than most superhero movies in my opinion. I've watched almost every superhero movie that has been released, especially in recent years, and I enjoyed this movie more than most. So no, i don't think I've wasted my time. Some people just have different opinions and appreciate different things.

    • @ianleex6874
      @ianleex6874 8 лет назад

      ***** In many instances the movie does play with themes between god and man. There were reoccurring themes that came full circle in the end. The thought provoking elements of the movie stretches far beyond the imagery.
      I'm not going to go out of my way to look for negatives in a film. That's unnecessary. I'm sure there's a lot of points that can be debated or justified and some that aren't. I'm not going to go out of my way to look for reasons to not like a film. If you wanted to, you can find flaws and things that don't make sense in the best of films. Cinema Sin has a whole youtube channel based on that. No movie is without sin, but i'm not going to go out of my way to fly towards negativity. That stuff is cancer.

    • @ianleex6874
      @ianleex6874 8 лет назад

      ***** Every movie has flaws. No one claimed this movie doesn't have any but not every shares the same flaws with the movie. You might not think it was a well crafted film, i happen to think it was in many ways and is superior to many superhero movies in many ways. There are youtube videos that hate on almost anything especially with popular things. It's no surprise that there are videos out there like that about the film. You can find videos like that for the best of films. The internet is filled with negativity. So it's not really saying anything. It's fine you don't like the film or that you think it's bad but don't expect everyone to share the same opinions.

    • @ianleex6874
      @ianleex6874 8 лет назад

      ***** I think this movie is better than most marvel movies on a good day. You might not think this movie is not superior to any movie but not everybody going to share the same opinions and not everybody that likes the film has low standards if that's the assumption.

    the thing about BvS is that its a really entertaining movie... it just not a good movie. there a big difference between good and entertaining. some people can't get past what makes the movie not good, and some people can. for instance, i enjoy the Transformers movies, but i know there are bad movies, but they are entertaining! just a bunch of robotic cars running around hitting each other. and i love those movies and some of my friends love them too, but other friends can't get passed the bad part. BvS, just like Gregg described it, a big dump comic book movie, and i love it. and the people who loved a"great movie" are the people who can take the enjoyment of the movie for what it is. the people who think its a "bad movie" can't get passed the wrongs of the movie.

      +Clark Zuckerberg It is still doing well....second weekend drop off typical for big budget films...it has already grossed more than superman did world wide...we will see how far it will go....many people are still rooting for it to fail so there will not be a justice league film but that boat has already sailed. The detractors who have been negative of this movie since its announcement in 2013 have wanted this movie to fail to stay away from competing with Marvel. They do not want the Justice League movie to be launched and some of the detractors do not want Zack Snyder to direct the film. But Nolan Snyder Goyer and Terrio will be working together once again. Warner Bros needs to allow them to creatively do the films as they want.......I see WB execs tampering with Suicide Squad. They need to back off let the directors do what they do and if they need to screen early do so. When a Producing Company messes with a director's control of a movie they mess up the movie.

      Yea, it was only going to make a lot because mainstream audiences have been waiting for a Batman/Superman crossover since 1989.

      SmoothLegend Nah it is making a lot because it is a good movie. Critics missed the boat on this one. It would not be doing this good this long if it was not good. It would have flopped.

      70% drop-off on second weekend = audiences didn't like it and bad worth of mouth spread due to it sucking, which = Flop. In that sense, it flopped harder than Amazing Spidey 2, regardless of how much it made on opening weekend which, again, is only due to the fact that it is the first time EVER the two titans of Batman/Superman have crossed over, something our mainstream culture have been foaming at the mouth for since 1989, freakin decades. How much it makes on opening weekend has almost no relation with how good it actually is. This second weekend is actually a better indication of how much it would've REALLY made if it wasn't a "First Time" phenomenon like the first Avengers.

    Having Flash come in and tease a future storyline may work in a comic monthly series. But in a movie it simply isn't on, it be like Charles Foster Kane saying "Rosebud" then two films later we get that answered.

    DC doesn't have compelling character's!? Lol what is this guy Colin saying. And he doesn't think DC has a big fan base!? is he serious? Other than DC fans, Superman and Batman are two of the most iconic characters in pop culture. He's just talking nonsense

    I never read any DC Comics and thoroughly enjoyed BvS. I agree it has flaws, but it kept me really interested on what was happening until the end, and also made me want to know more about its universe and characters instead of just caring about about Superman and Batman.

    What was the comic book series Greg was talking about with Batman and Jim story. I'm intrigued.

    I agree with Colin that there was alot of stuff in this movie that if you are not a big comic book fan it made no sense. When the flash turned up I literally had no idea it was the flash.

      Nah don't sell yourself short, I know who Flash is, extensively and I can tell you that the movie handled it poorly. It was unclear because of his look and the fact that Bruce wakes up afterward. It's so poorly handled that the averageviewer will interpret it as merely an extension of that unnecessary dream sequence rather than a flash coming back in time.

    I agree with what Colin is saying about the film being bad but to fix it in the future they need a better Director, editor, etc. Trying to make the Nolan Bat films again is a mistake, they need to move forwards not backwards.

    Kevin was right. Tim was thinking of the bumper sticker in the First Date video that reads, "Ass, Gas, or Grass: Nobody rides for free."

    Saying this movie has no plot is like saying The Empire Strikes Back doesn't have a plot. Of course it's a continuation of another story, it's the sequel to Man Of Steel.
