My favorite thing about my steam deck is the ability to seamlessly transition between my desktop and deck without any type of loss progress. I basically get to choose how I play my games under one umbrella and Sonys handheld NEEDS to support that too. (Idk why they wouldn’t, I just thought I’d add that)
Don't abandon the handheld if things get rough. Vita just stopped making exclusives and promoted Indie games...smh. I bought it to have heavy hitters on the go not 2nd/3rd tier games
I'd love some interesting mobile handheld games using AR and onboard sensors but that level of imagination is more Nintendo's ballpark and not something Microsoft and Sony would even bother investing in.
All you need to do is just make a portal 2 with internal storage/ add an SSD slot and allow you to download your games on it(offline play). Make it Oled and allow apps/ search browser

The handheld gaming market can finally put mobile gaming down to shame. Mobile exclusives on handheld portable machines mean more power and better games. That’s what they should focus on. So many mobile games that were squandered.
I fear this will be another case of players saying they want something then just not buying it. That's why the PSP and the Vita failed. They were both great, but not enough people bought them. This user trait happens often. It's probably the reason Sony hasn't remastered Bloodborne. People say they want it, then when it arrives it doesn't sell enough. In fact Bloodborne sold only 7.46 million in total on PS4, as opposed to 20 million for Spider-Man which came out years later.
I won't say that the PSP failed. 80 million units sold is a pretty good number. The Vita on the other hand, I have seen more people talk about the Vita than actually own one. And as someone who bought the Vita, it wasn't such a great system.
That’s because the people talking that they want this are a small segment of the entire gaming community. For as much as the core gaming community loves the steam deck it has sold less than 5 million units so far. I’m unconvinced that a handheld console from Sony that is not their mainline unit ( namely a switch like experience) will be a long time viable product for them.
Please do some stories trying to convince developers about UEVRs potential and how making AAA VR ports easy for developers would sell so many more headsets. 80% of the VR librarys are just Indi games right now.
I’m wandering how they will manage game development from resource standpoint. Fewer and fewer games coming out coz of development cycle and Nintendo consolidate their portable and console resources to help that. My worry is what would impact be to console game development if a handheld in place (assuming games can’t play on both handheld and PS6 or whatever it is)
Exactly, unless they can downscale a PS5 to a handheld size all it will do is create more development bottlenecks. And why go to that effort if we can already stream PS5 games to a handheld with satisfactory results and importantly maintains a single game development path like Nintendo does.
These new handhelds are the future. The model is already there. Sony and Microsoft will release their own companion handhelds that will run low setting versions natively of their libraries moving forward. People like taking their games on the go and these companies would love nothing more than everyone double dipping on hardware and further pushing digital only libraries
I think it needs the following: 1) to be able to play PS5 games like the Steam Deck can play the PS games ported to Steam. I agree, it should not try to have its own exclusive library. 2) as Jada says, should lean into pocket size portability somehow like a folding screen. I dont want something bigger than the current switch for sure. 3) A dock would allow dual sense controller use, etc. 4) total backward compatibility built in with all previous platforms. A more urgonomic Ps vita that takes sd memory has R2/L2 buttons instead of a back touch pad. It can play cloud gaming and be able to download all the games PS4 and below.

I am interested in a Vita successor, but I'm not interested a literal handheld PS5. Why would I want to REBUY the same exact PS5 games I already own but on a small screen format? And it would mean rebuying, since I buy PS5 games physically and there is no way a handheld PS5 will play PS5 discs. Sony should make a handheld that is designed to play HD Remakes of ps1 and ps2. That's an era of amazing original IP's and there's an audience that wants to relieve these games all over again.

A handheld first of all needs to be truly portable and pocketable other wise you may as well just lug around a laptop. There's no point of super large handhelds I draw the line for size at the switch lite
so don't get a big handheld then. Some people like big handhelds with big screens some like 7" regular and some like micro retro handhelds. As long as there are options available for everybody there wouldn't be a problem.

Those are fine to play retro games however my concern is that they won't make pocketable portable consoles with new games. Just my opinion but if Sony wanted to make a successful handheld they can, backlog, affordable memory cards, no trendy features. but I think what would separate them from the rest is to have a device that can have access to Sony's library and backlog AND access to steam. With that you get longevity in the market
It feels like the very idea of Sony releasing a PS5 portable would mean that Sony really plans on making the base model PS5 the center of gravity for this generation. You can't optimize for the Pro and the Portable without sticking close to what performs best on the standard console. Also can't help but think that this could really make any ambitious PS5 release a lot more complicated than if there was one SKU in terms of performance.

What's the point of having an exclusive game for handheld? Why would a game developed by PlayStation only work on a PlayStation 5 handheld and not on a PlayStation 5 or 6? What advantage does that give to PlayStation? Or does it just limit consumer choice to another device that's already in their own ecosystem? Sony makes their money on games, not necessarily on the hardware here, so it doesn't make sense to make a handheld exclusive game. You don't see Nintendo doing that.

Youll be able play GTA 6 on a PlayStation portal and it’s gonna be amazing. I cant stress the potential of this thing enough. $199 gets you a ps5 in your hand. Seriously. The new update allows you to not even need a ps5 to use it.

ps vita failed because sony created a new storage card and trying to shove it down our throat. Those card at $40 couldnt could hardly fit a game. You would had to fork out $100 plus to fit a couple digital games. As long as they dont try to do something like that and stick with sd or micro sd im down to adopting one.
Sony doesn’t care enough about console exclusives or developing their own IP to survive a move to gaming as a subscription service, which is where this looks to be headed. And they don’t have the same online infrastructure that Microsoft will be able to leverage. My money’s on Steam and Nintendo being the big two by the end of the next generation. Even if Steam deck loses out to other hardware competitors, the platform is much better placed to build on its current successes than MS or Sony. And Nintendo know handhelds better than anyone, have better hardware profit margins than anyone, and have spent the last few decades nurturing their IP to a level of fandom and mainstream recognition that comes close to rivalling Disney.
What do you think the install base of the Steam Deck is? Sony and Nintendo have released handhelds that lap that thing multiple times over and yet you say Sony doesn't have a chance. Again how big do you think Steam deck is in sales?

But my point is that if Sony and Microsoft are preparing to pivot a few years from now, into the same space the Steam deck already occupies, Valve have a massive headstart, and a massive library. I can see the Xbox gamepass continuing to succeed as a Netflix for games, but Sony just don’t have the exclusives or the ip to pull off such a product. There’s every chance that Valve mess up the headstart they’ve been given, but they’re positioned well to capitalise on that market long before MS and Sony launch, and if the deck crosses the bridge from handheld to home console in the way it already does from Pc to handheld, then Sony’s position becomes even more precarious. The PlayStation brand has a lot of mainstream recognition and generations of fans, but imo the disappointing lack of exclusives or just new releases in general this generation have damaged the brand somewhat. Whatever happens, it’s going to be interesting to see how things shake up next generation.

I think they should expand on the portal. It’s already the coolest product they have. Like I can’t explain how great this thing is. It really is amazing. But I don’t think you can get the same level of power out of a ps5 handheld as you do an actual ps5. But you can STREAM the same amount power of a ps5.

What Sony really needs to do is give Australia cloud gaming. We have xbox game pass and nvidia cloud gaming so why can't we have Playstation cloud gaming as I got the 30th anniversary edition Playstation Portal. I would 100% buy a dedicated Playstation handheld as long as it does play the current generation games like the Portal. Sony really needs to release a dedicated handheld ASAP not in 2 years or more time.

Make it play PS4 games and its a success. Make it play PS3 games and its 🤯. Get developers to scale down PS5 games to its specs and its 100m+ units.
ps vita failed because sony created a new storage card and trying to shove it down our throat. Those card at $40 couldnt could hardly fit a game. You would had to fork out $100 plus to fit a couple digital games. As long as they dont try to do something like that and stick with sd or micro sd im down to adopting one.
Sony doesn’t care enough about console exclusives or developing their own IP to survive a move to gaming as a subscription service, which is where this looks to be headed. And they don’t have the same online infrastructure that Microsoft will be able to leverage. My money’s on Steam and Nintendo being the big two by the end of the next generation. Even if Steam deck loses out to other hardware competitors, the platform is much better placed to build on its current successes than MS or Sony. And Nintendo know handhelds better than anyone, have better hardware profit margins than anyone, and have spent the last few decades nurturing their IP to a level of fandom and mainstream recognition that comes close to rivalling Disney.
What do you think the install base of the Steam Deck is? Sony and Nintendo have released handhelds that lap that thing multiple times over and yet you say Sony doesn't have a chance. Again how big do you think Steam deck is in sales?

But my point is that if Sony and Microsoft are preparing to pivot a few years from now, into the same space the Steam deck already occupies, Valve have a massive headstart, and a massive library. I can see the Xbox gamepass continuing to succeed as a Netflix for games, but Sony just don’t have the exclusives or the ip to pull off such a product. There’s every chance that Valve mess up the headstart they’ve been given, but they’re positioned well to capitalise on that market long before MS and Sony launch, and if the deck crosses the bridge from handheld to home console in the way it already does from Pc to handheld, then Sony’s position becomes even more precarious. The PlayStation brand has a lot of mainstream recognition and generations of fans, but imo the disappointing lack of exclusives or just new releases in general this generation have damaged the brand somewhat. Whatever happens, it’s going to be interesting to see how things shake up next generation.

I have absolutely no idea why you keep downplaying Sony in the handheld space or subscription space. You really think Sony are done with exclusives? So Ghost of Yotei is a multiplat release all of a sudden?? It's crazy to write off Sony when they're happy to announce software out the blue and very close to release. See Astro for example. Regarding subs you need to keep in mind Sony isn't just gaming it's also an entertainment company with Film, TV, music, animation, crunchy roll etc. Any of that can be added to their sub at any time. But you're right will be interesting how it all unfolds.

with all these portal PCs, and most exclusives going to steam.........why would I buy this. The Steam Deck can be the vita 2. you can emulate old playstation games on it and have a vote boot up screen boom.
