@@_DropTheMike For real. You can see after the 2000's ended and we moved into the 2010's and 2020's, you can see how many teams went for more colorful and classic looking jerseys, like the Hornets, Lakers, hawks, warriors, and a lot of other teams.

Late 80s, all of the 90s and 00s to about 2008. All had great running backs, then fucking Derrick Henry comes along and puts up the best runs since beastquake and APs comeback year. I'm a cowboys fan but I'll root for the Titans

The biggest rule change of all time is why…offensive lineman being allowed to use their hands. Pass blocking on a regular basis became a lot more practical.
This. No one ever says it even though it was such a huge factor in the rise of passing.

That happen in 1978. The game has done a lot of evolving even since then, and as an offensive lineman that was just a terrible rule to begin with. Probably the best rule change in football history

Chubb's another product of his line. You could put 200 rbs off the street behind them and get nearly the same production. You did with your third string.

It’s also the fact that running backs are somewhat replaceable, and don’t need to be picked in the first round and given all that money. Theres plenty of teams and instances where a backup running back performs well and puts up the same yardage but at a cheaper rate

In hindsight, I think both Henry and Chubb are the only two backs I would even consider using a top 5 pick on as they have been steadily producing for years and are an essential part of their team's identity

@@2013HotNewMusic nothing weird about it zeke had a couple of dominant years but has been ok/decent for the remainder of his career, hardly a top 5 pick. Kamara had a major down year last season but otherwise has been solid but he doesn't have a single 1000 running yds season. Taylor has been an absolute beast but only has 2 seasons under his belt, a bit early to say in hindsight he would be a top 5 pick, he definitely would be worth one if he continues on his current trajectory. Mixon has been pretty solid, not sure I'd say he is worth a top 5, top 10 most definitely worth it

I would say the TRADITIONAL style of runningback is fading. The power backs like henry are becoming rare. Now most people want a hybrid back like an alvin kamara or mcafferty. Or rather than depend on one back have a backfield duo fullbacks are still used but are primarily extra blockers

His first start at RB he didn't even know the playbook and went through plays in the hotel lobby because there was a last minute injury and he had a baller game.

This is indirectly related to the Deebo Samuel situation with the 49ers. As the year went on, he started to become their feature ball carrier. While he is a team player and did his best to help his team win, he wants to play WR, not "Wide Back".

Somewhat true, except for the fact only speculation that Deebo doesnt want to be used as a Wide-Back. Only time it was even asked Deebo said he doesnt care if that what the team needs him to do. A player avg 5 rushing attempts a game is not a featured ball carrier/ he is just taken the load off of our lone RB after our # 2 and 3 got injured.
Reason why this holds no weight
1. We only asked him to help out when we lost two of our starting RBs, No different when when Gould had to play punter
2. You talking like we ask him to be the #1 RB, you realize he is only been asked to carry the ball 8 times at most, 2 times a Qtr
3. We have 5 RBs on the books now + mobile QB, I am pretty sure if he has a problem with it he can say it
4. EVERY Starting WR+TE has lined up as a RB, Kittles actually started it first, this is just Kyles system of swiss army knifes
I aint saying it aint true, but there is no credible evidence other than media saying that, and seeing how it really isnt as common as people think I don't really think he cares, mainly because he is asking for the ball on his on terms.

@@darylrichardson8567 That's why I said he wants to be seen as a wide reciever. There's just not enough value in playing RB. NFL players have a short window to make as much as they can. The way to do that is as a WR.
While the 2016 NFL Draft is a good example, the post- Ki-Jana one that illustratres more your point is the 1999 draft. Coming up to this draft you had one of the most hyped prospects ever in Ricky Williams and a generational talent in Edgerrin James, yet they went 4th and 5th and the top 3 picks were quarterbacks, and two of those were worse than Goff and Wentz, only McNabb was worth of the pick. The Browns would have definitely gave up Couch if they knew how talented James would end up being.
I think it was Ricky, not Ki-Jana who changed how teams approach RB in the draft. The Saints gave up so much for him only for them to draft another RB in the 1st round two years later. While you could argue that it wasn't because of an injury, off field issues with players have happened before (Phillips) and with such a quicky ageing position such risks are not worth taking. Not only that but the RB that they drafted 20 something two years later after the Ricky pick ended up being their franchise rushing leader.
yeah ricky was probably more than kijana, at least with trades. though rbs were still strong for a while, you had 3 rbs go top-5 in 2005 and none lived up to the hype

I’d go as far to say that almost no running back should get drafted in the first round. The longevity just isn’t there and you generally get better value at almost every other position. Jamal Lewis is the last running back drafted in the top 20 picks who won a super bowl with the team who drafted him
Biggest issue to me is their career length. Even if they're an all-timer RB, that will probably only last 2-4 years at most. Its just not worth the investment right now until health advances enough somehow to keep backs healthier.

Ki-Jana Carter is a heartbreakign story. Dude really was a great athlete. Only so much you can do about quite an injury though...
I think Derek Henry is the best running back since AD, I remember seeing Derek Henry’s 99 yard run. He is a unit.

Running backs over the past few years have honestly been getting screwed. Extremely heavy workloads on a rookie deal and are left out to melt like ice cubes in the sun when the rookie deal expired or if lucky, get a 2nd deal. It also doesn’t help that nfl offenses have shifted to be so pass heavy that running backs are kinda obsolete.
That’s what I’m saying. Todd Gurley, cmc, and saquons careers are all falling apart because of injuries
Yea but they'll never be obsolete. There are plenty of teams that still show there is value at the RB position and that having a productive running game allows for a lot more big pass play opportunities at the QB position.
Plus if RBs go away, who's running the ball to kill time? The QB? Lamar Jackson was really banged up last year.....he can't continue his style of play for long periods of time because eventually injuries will catch up to him (see also Vick, Michael). That's why I hate the whole "Running Backs Don't Matter" arguments. It's like everyone wants the NFL to become nothing but Run and Shoot offenses that don't know how to ball control or control the clock. That's why RBs are still going to be a thing for a long time and why we should not be so happy at seeing them being rendered obsolete.
Plus I also have this theory that RBs today are far more injury prone today than they were decades ago. You could get a good 5-7 years of great RB play from one guy barring any catastrophic injuries. I just don't understand why RBs are dropping like flies more nowadays it seems.
@@crater044 This, 100%. The running back position has been devalued, no doubt. However, there are still several RBs who contribute plenty to their offenses, both on the ground and in the receiving game. Derrick Henry, Jonathon Taylor, Nick Chubb, Dalvin Cook, Alvin Kamara, CMC, Aaron Jones, Zeke, Joe Mixon, I could go on.
I went to highschool/ grew up around Derrick Henry.... He is bound and determine to be the best there ever is and was.

If the game just keeps evolving in the direction it's going formations will be more spread out and a running back might become more of a blocker or a receiver, or die out all together. However I think the eagles proved creative run first teams can still have success last year. The Titans also prove this, if one of them could win a Superbowl or 2 more teams are likely to follow.
It’s possible the eagles have put together a pretty talented team this offseason and they talk like Jalen hurts has improved a lot and the titans will probably take a small step back with having to overhaul their wide receiver room but with Derek Henry coming back and with that defense only getting better they will probably be back in the conversation again soon.

There will always be hybrid players. Someone who can run behind blocks will find use, even if its a WR doing the running.

Ramsey, Bosa, Hill and even Prescott have arguments over Henry, Henry didn’t have a lot of usage early in his career (could have gotten hurt earlier if you immediately put him in a 300+ attempt role)
There is absolutely 0 chance that anyone other than Dak would be the #1 pick in a redraft.
Henry definitely goes in the first, but even top 10 is pushing it with guys like Bosa, Ramsey, Buckner, Tyreek, Michael Thomas, Stanley, Xavien Howard, and Ngakoue all likely going before him.

Once Henry hit his stride he transformed the Titans into a contender. Had he been coached and utilized properly (played behind Demarco Murray his first 2 years) he would have much higher career stats. The Titans overutilized him (he was on pace for over 420+ carries this past season before injury). Henry is basically what this video discussed. An RB that could have easily been an OLB but chose to still play RB at the college level. In 2016, interestingly enough Kevin Byard and Derek Henry would have been easy 10 picks knowing the careers that they are having beforehand.

And the problem with running backs is that they’re not really used as often as they are like today because the game change from having a powerhouse backs to now using your wide receivers and tight end and not having to use your running back really depleted the high market for running backs cause they change the play on the offense where it is no longer depending on them anymore.
They are used but they have to be duel threat backs. They have to be good receivers like Jonathon Taylor or Christian McCaffery. thats the only way to survive as an rb. less touches that shove them into the teeth of the defense.

@@DonJulio1942 I'd argue that the reason for both is analytics. Scoring efficiency, ways to circumvent defenses, and even ways to extend the longevity of players' careers. Why send a star running back into the trenches and get only so much yardage when you can space out the defense with the passing game, and potentially get even more yardage to boot? Why focus on high-risk mid-range shots, or interior postplays with a good chance of fouling, when you can effectively neuter a part of the defense with shooting from deep?
I don't know the statistics offhand, but in this modern era, analytics is getting used by more and more teams across all sports to gain a competitive and tactical edge.

As a niner fan, look at our rb room the past few years. We been drafting low round rbs and finding dudes off the scrap heap that have put up close to 1k seasons. Why would you splurge a top pick on a rb if you can find production all over the place in the draft then just scheme them open with play design? Position has been devalued over the years for sure
Especially with the longer seasons in modern NFL. RB's are cannon fodder nowadays unfortunately.🤕

our scheme also makes it so that you really don't need one featured workhorse back.
This is the right way to find RB production. Looks for RB's with low mileage and low wear and tear in college.
@@KaidonSalter4Heisman why though? What’s the point in having expensive big name running backs when a rotation of cheap young backs get you the same results. Last year CMC, Kamara, Zeke, Cook, and Henry were the highest paid backs all making 12.5 million a year+. Dalvin Cook started the most games out of them all at 13 games. The next highest was 10 games. Last year the 49ers had the most team rushing yards and spent 2.5 million on their entire running back room(increases to 5 if you include mostert but he didn’t count against cap since he was on IR).

This is an inevitable result of the ways the league has created rules to favor the passing game. Pass interference, blocking rules, illegal contact, roughing the passer, these have all had the effect of making the modern chunk and dunk game of screen passes and slant routes mechanically advantaged against defenses. While some of these rules have a nominal safety component, the main driving force behind them is to push up scoring, and that has eradicated the "four yards and a cloud of dust" philosophy from the gridiron.

My man Henry. Carried me to a champ in 2021, and 2nd place in 2022 despite his injury, but his on-the-field stuff was even better. What a rad running back to watch. Really hoping those injuries stay off of him.

Short answer, no.
Even an RB as dominant and as physically gifted as Henry cannot escape the natural wear and tear of the Rb position
Keep in mind, Henry has really only been The Titans’ feature back for 2.5 - 3 seasons (He was DeMarco Murray’s backup for his first 2 seasons) and we’re already starting to see the injury bug get to him
The NFL used to be super run heavy and you rarely saw qbs airing it out 50+ yards. Some say Joe Namath is the reason for the change. A good recovery can get you 20 yards. A good running back is less. Plus running backs out a lot of strain on their body
Joe Namath isn’t the reason for the change. It’s the rules that pretty much mandate that teams pass nowadays. Quarterbacks and wide receivers have way too many advantages with the modern day rules being what they are.
I remember buying snacks and watching Reggie Rush and that entire draft. That is the only draft I watched full and none of the recent can compare
Great vid my friends and I talk about this all the time.. LBs have had the same decline in value in the draft and overall. I think RB and LB are obviously intertwined on the football field. With the big all-pro downhill fill the gap run stopping LB who can’t cover well is few and far between now. You have to cover in today’s NFL and if you can’t as a LB your a liability.
Dlineman who’s stock is up is what teams usually depend more on to stop the run.
Big run stopping lineman are drafted higher and paid. There are very few LBs in the league that can stop the run and not be swallowed up by great Olineman, and can also cover a RB or TE every down
It’s super hard to find that LB and when you do it’s usually lucky and he becomes a franchise Defensive player.
It’s super interesting to see with the RB and LB who were valued most in years past minus QB

RB's have short window for peak production. Recent examples are Zeke and Saquon who are already showing signs of decline. Better to use high draft choices on positions that have greater longevity.

Perfectly made video, but i would like to add something that i've learned on a video about another sport, of all of the human limits on sports, the closest we're to reach the absolute ceiling are strengh and definetly speed, so in the past, the diference between runners could be very apparent, but nowadays, only fractions of fractions of second separates entire classes, the differrence being mental skills and gentics that help or entirely avoids injuries or off the field issues, things that Peterson and Henry definitly have and just now are easy to see, but when prospects are wild things to guess. I think the mental strengh side of things would ever be subjective, but the genetics fields are always making progress at such amazing pace, that i doubt that 20 years in future from now, it will take some part of player evaluation process, and that is the best chance to freakish RB's get the place in the draft they deserve.
I also think one of the major changes in the NFL is the fact that as long as you have a great offensive line you can place any competent running back in the backfield and they will be very productive for your team. Once the wheels fall off that running back just replaces with another running back. Remember all the 1,000 yd rushers the Denver broncos had for years?
Reason number four. Denver. 1998-2000. The Broncos showed that you could have running success by focusing on a high quality, cohesive O-line as opposed to a superstar RB. I remember hearing people talking about that in the media. Terrell Davis got injured. Olandis Gary plugs in. The next year it was Mike Anderson. Three years in a row. Three excellent rushing attacks. Three different RBs.
Extend the timeline to 2006 and the results are that 7 different RBs had 8 1000+ seasons in 9 years. The focus in the NFL shifts from the "Bell Cow" RB to O-line quality and cohesion. Plug and play RBs. Now it's RB by committee.
I had the same thought the other day. That you can treat Carter like the dividing line, the BC/AD line of NFL running backs...

The number one cause in the reduced value of the RBs was the rule changes for the pass defense.
The NFL made it more difficult to cover receivers, because they wanted more scoring.
So, the value of the QBs went up and the value of the RBs went down.
That's a good question. Especially since D. Henry wasn't a starter in the NFL when he first came out of college, so he might have not been given time to develop.
Gibbs from Alabama looks like he could be a prototypical modern NFL RB. He leads the nation in YPC (aside from dudes from service academies) AND he averages 10 yards per catch. He can run between the tackles and burn LB’s in coverage. He’s going to be the next big thing in the NFL.

A lot of teams use multiple RBs in their packages. 3 to 4 different RBs in a game. Back in 90s they only used to have 1 or 2 RBs.
As a Browns fan, I remember the 2018 draft fondly, because the talk about the number 1 pick was kinda wild, there were the handful of people, not many who suggested Baker, but most talking heads pounded the table for Sam Darnold or Saquon Barkley… I remembered saying I hope they don’t take Barkley at 1 because even though he was sensational at PSU, the Browns could get a Nick Chubb or Sony Michel in the second… so I am glad the Browns went with Nick Chubb in the second as opposed to Barkley at 1
well Derrick kinda started getting the workload around 2019 so hes been the primary RB for 3 years. around 4-5 years after being the primary RB they start declining. also he did get injured in 2021 and when he returned to the playoffs he played bad. so who knows if Derrick might start with that decline in production, but will see in 2022
@How bout naw i think hes gonna start the decline. His only real weapons are his size and top end speed. Top end speed is gonna suffer in my opinion, and him not being any kind of a receiving threat is just gonna make it to where people are just slamming into him when hes out there. Plus they got rid of AJ which is again going to put even more people in the box. I think he gets 1100 this year, and I think it will be his last or the 2nd to last season with more then 1000yrds.

Derrick Henry and Jonathan Taylor show today that the style of big, bruising running backs from years, decades ago, still have a place in today’s game as real game changers.
I think one day the position could revolve back around again close to what it once was.
Now that defenses are geared towards covering the pass, linebackers have gotten slimmer and quicker and defenses are running more nickel packages.
So a run heavy offense with a big bruising back can do some real damage.

I remember a member of the teams front office around this time basically said even internally, people were scared to voice any particular player for their first round picks at time. Because it felt like no matter who they picked, it was gonna be wrong. That's when you know your organization is in a downward spiral. People may not appreciate Marvin Lewis due to the playoff losses, but he brought credibility to an organization that essentially flatlined in the 90s.

The NFL owners by 1995 made a collective decision that a pass happy NFL league had a greater marketing upside than a run happy league or even a balanced league. So they ordered the slow phase out of NFL power football. By 2003 it had progressed to a point where you had 60% pass teams but they were mostly dink and dunk. Then in 2004 rule changes came that finished the job and opened up the entire field. Today's game was born. The NFL likes to call it "evolution" but the correct term is "engineering".

Theres also the problem that the superstar RBs are like 1% of the players that play the position. The rest are the rest and it barely matters. You can plug and play any RB into any team and it'll work seamlessly. It's a position where every year a star RB disappears and an undrafted FA RB gets promoted to a starting role or even star player level.
I'll never forget, as an Eagles fan, watching Raheem Mostert fighting for a roster spot and losing, only to a few seasons later resurrect his career out of nowhere as one of the best in the game. And now one of our best RBs is Boston Scott, a player most fans of other teams never even heard about and the dude is amazing playing for us.
It's just a weird position nowadays.
With how dominate Henry is and with a decent O-Line and a dude who has to vs stacked boxes on the regular I think he could've been worth a no.1 pick if people knew how good he was going to be you can say that about alot of guys in the league now but that's what makes the draft a thrill.
The league average is 4.3 ypc. Henry's ypc is 4.3. he's not dominant, he's not even good because he can't catch out of the backfield like most rbs now. He's good as a battering ram for the 8 games he plays though I guess.
@Fries did you notice the part about what I said about catching out of the backfield? look how the Titans scored both of their tds, it was throws to the backup RB. Henry is basically 10 on 11 if you have him out there and decide to pass. He handcuffs what you can do on offense and makes it easier on defenses in the pass game because he's absolute dead weight catching or blocking, then the pass game gets blamed for it when he's a large culprit of why the pass game sucks. Rbs got to do something in the pass game nowadays, and if they don't they better be ripping off 5+ a run. There's no metric that shows the Titans are better with him. They're 6-4 with him and 6-3 without him since the beginning of last year. They average like a whole 5 yards more rushing on more carries per game in that time too
