100% agree that I wish not everything for children had to be such a production. It’s no wonder parents are always stressed and broke. 😂 I feel like we can celebrate and make events fun without themes and being pressured to buy junk we don’t need or will never use again.

Amen! I was afraid I got that point across poorly, but I was just trying to say that making everything “special” actually makes nothing seem special, ya know? 🤷‍♀️

I’m reminded of when my daughter tried cheerleading. She only did it for one year in 3rd grade.
The end of the season banquet was over 4 hours long, and there was no notice that it would be so long because the invite only said when it would start and not when it would end.
The reason the banquet was so long was that there were over 100 cheerleaders and football players in grades 3-8 and when they handed out all the kids’ trophies, they didn’t just say the kid’s name, they had to say something specific about each kid. It sort of felt like forced positivity because it was obvious they had to dig deep to come up with something for many of the kids. In my head I imagined the person giving out trophies saying, “Brian Jones. Brian, come up here. Yeah… so for the first time in 3 years Brian has been playing peewee football, Brian has avoided getting a concussion this year. Yay Brian.” In case I wasn’t clear, that did not actually happen, but it seemed that way😅.
I too fear I come across as negative but in reality, the kids who aren’t the star players may actually prefer being under the radar. Forced positivity almost draws more negative attention, if that makes sense.

I agree. I have been the mother of young children for 30 years and hate holidays because of all the stress of making things “special”. I advise all new parents to start traditions that don’t cost money or extra planning for holidays.

@@teresanorris4769 that's exactly how we feel, the only event we celebrate is Lords Evening Meal which was last night on Nisan 14. But we enjoy and host gatherings all the time with no specific pagan holidays forced on us. 😎

I agree with you. I really miss the 80’s and 90’s, it was much easier when I was growing up. It is getting toward the end of the school year and I am burned out with all the performances, activities, etc. it is all too much, especially when you are a working mom who also manages the house, cooking, cleaning, chauffeuring, shopping, etc

I LOVED this video!!! Showing us that your everyday life is real, and that sometimes having little to no excitement in participating in your children's activities is real. We always put our best self out there for others to see and that's just not how every moment of real life is. Wish you'd been around when my adult boys were growing up...I felt like such a failure as a mom, wife, teacher, and even as a Christian because I wasn't as perfect as I saw everyone else. Mindy, thanks for being real, being encouraging, and telling it like it is!!

Thank you Mindy! Kind. Positive. Helpful. Useful! Yes- I watch your channel because I find all of these things. Sometimes “real life “ is definitely not glamorous or exciting- for me the excitement comes when I realize that I have done the best I can for those who rely on me and I’ve managed to do this without too much drama and no “emergencies “ 😊 I find it hard to silence my phone sometimes- I have always had a policy that if you need me, my phone is always on. I’ve realized that unless I take time to recharge my batteries, I am a lot less helpful. I appreciate the honest way you share your experiences with us and I hope you have a wonderful Holy Week. 🌻🙏

I totally GET THIS on a different level. We are empty nesters (for a really long time now.) Somehow my friends are beginning to sound like they are my mother. Asking all of the questions: asking Why, What are you thinking, Why were you up so late last night, what time did you go to bed last night, how much did that new dishwasher cost…… and sooooo on…. I have finally put my foot down gently. I need some ME time to read uninterrupted, watch YT, play a game on my iPad, plant seeds for my garden, research things, and so forth. I personally feel that ME time is important for my mental health; and it is not selfish at all of me to take time for myself. I cannot be everything to everyone.
Call me crazy but my mental health comes first!
Super video ❤ Thank you for sharing 🌷🌼🌸🌻🌟
Edited to say: I cannot fix everyone’s problems. I would love to, but I can’t. I cannot sort out everyone’s issues. Again…. I would love to, but I can’t. 🌸🌼🌷🪷

Bravo! I applaud you for being brave enough to speak out against everything being a production. As a retired elementary teacher, I often wondered what my kids would have to look forward to when they had already had a fifth grade dance, whatever grade graduation, etc. We have a whole generation of children who have been entertained and kept busy with extra-curricular activities. They need down time as well. Thank you for sharing your latest reads. Since childhood, I’ve loved to read and have made it a goal this year to put down my iPad in the evenings and read instead of mindlessly scrolling for hours. Happy Easter to you and your family! I've watched your videos for a couple of years now, but on the TV where the whole family watches, so I'm just now subscribing and coming to say hi! This video spoke to me all the way through it, so I wanted to thank you for it!
    1. Yes! Enough of overdoing activities and theme days and so much extra! All three of my kids are neurodivergent (ADHD and autism), and they are not really fans of straying from routine. They can fit a recurring activity (band, a sport, art classes, etc) into their routine, but they don't like all the extras for that. A banquet, or solo performance would just set them off.
    2. Love your book recommendations. I've already read and love some, and I've added some others to my reading list.
    3. Yes! Removing myself from social media more often, and being more physically present has been wonderful for my family, and even for my own well-being. I'm less stressed, and love the new experiences we all have time for now.

Lots of good and interesting thoughts here. I share your interest in budget cooking but otherwise our lives are nothing alike. I don't have kids/grandkids and I'm not a believer. I'm not even American. But that's why I like to tune in and see what you're up to. Because you ARE different from me. As for your thoughts on less screen time, it's such a choice. How many of us are really forced to engage almost 24/7? Aren't those who do it doing it to themselves? All I can tell you is I need my down time to stay sane. That's how I cope with everything else. So I agree that putting some boundaries on usage is helpful.

I love that you're reading Alyssa Childers!! Her RUclips channel is great and so is John Coopers (Cooperstuff) from Skillet! They're from my era of CCM and to see them standing strong, dedicated to apologetics and theology is awesome!

You ARE a bright positive spot on the internet where I find comradery in everyday life. :) I'm reading "How to Break Up With Your Phone" by Catherine Price and so far it's eye-opening! Definitely living with intention these days. Thank you for your authenticity. I always love your content!

Totally agree on all the school functions and a particular outfit or color. We live 30 miles from a town of 17,000 people and 2.5 hours away from a big city. So unless I know months in advance so we can go shopping in the city or we are lucky enough to find something at Wal-mart or Maurices, we aren't can't get it.

Love your videos And enjoyed the recommendations on books and downtime. I am no longer dealing with children and activities and running them hither and yawn but I still love your cooking tips even though our household is much smaller now. Please continue to provide us tips and tricks as I love watching your videos regardless of topic. It's so nice to see somebody who's Shows how it really is when life is busy and there are many tasks related to getting kids to and from activities and trying to feed them nutritious food. Bravo!

I so love your channel, and really enjoy these 'day in the really real life' vids!!! You and your hubs are adorbs, would love to see more 'date night in the kitchen' vids - he's so darn sweet, and seeing you two interact gives me hope for happily after!! I love YA novels too!! Hunger Games is one of my all-time favorite books, and I so appreciated hearing how that and the Percy Jackson novels turned your daughter into a reader!!!! It gives me a serious sad to see that so many people have gotten away from reading, and of course with all the social media/computer world, it's a miracle anyone under age 30 reads at all. And I've just gotta say, you've convinced me that if I had glasses and dimples, I'd be SO way cuter without makeup!! ♥😍😎

Thanks for sharing your face products and the books you have read. In highschool I became a Victoria Holt fan and have since always been on the lookout for books in that time period. Agree about your comments about kids and such. Really enjoy your videos.

Ugh… I agree. I don’t sit and watch the news every day.. people cannot believe it.. I say listen it’s something that causes anxiety etc… if there is something God ants me to know He will make it happen.
And He does.. and I can look into that one thing and get the facts and then move on..
We need way more family time ❤

Something you can talk about with your kids is approaching and appreciating a movie or TV series that's based on a book and the book itself as kind of separate entities, and not necessarily judging a cinematic work based strictly on how true it is to the book. Discuss how the same story is presented in two vastly different mediums and the benefits and challenges of each. One thing that I really like about the era of TV and film that we're living in now is the number of excellent screen adaptations and movie re-makes that expand on the source material and add or change the characters or setting or time period in ways that create more complexity and interest.♥

I agree that over celebrating takes away a child’s sense of confidence and achievement when they step out of the ordinary. And please….no more red shirt, earth colors, green sock days! I refuse to spend money on a’wear once’ item.
