I've got size 12 feet and the penny is my main board. I absolutely love it and it revitalized my interest in skateboarding! The board is weird, because it needs a different riding style. I pretty much have my front foot facing forward with my toes just past the bolts and my backfoot somewhat sideways with a part of the heel along the tail. The boards are fun because they have a different center of balance, as both feet are equally balanced on the nose and tail. I like gettting over giant gaps and cracks either by lifting up the tail and hopping my weight off the board so that the board rolls right over, or pushing on the ground and guiding my skateboard with the front foot. I usually do that down curbs, but riding off of them is fun also. The foot toward the nose can tip the board out from under me when I hit a rock. I kind of just roll forward and run off. Sometimes that doesn't work and I slam. It took a few adjustments for the tightness of the trucks, but I can cruise down hills without speedwobbles. If the front truck is looser than the back it will be a very unstable ride. My favorite part about the skateboard is its durability! Even though it scrapes, the board feel of the penny has never changed in the three years I've had it! The flexibility and pop of the board have been the same, even as I ride it through the rain. The board will never waterlog. I love the thinness of the trucks, because it allows me to ride on narrow places, such as curbs and the smooth paint of the traffic lines when the road is rough. It's fun to ride on wonky surfaces because the street becomes a playground everytime I step on the board! Good video! Hope you keep skating! Peace

I agreed. I think Ogden Sikel is only looking at it from a traditional skateboarder's pros and cons. You can't hate-on something that is not designed for your likes and dislikes. Pennies are for cruising and commuting and having fun and some people like my wife don't like the traditional skateboard because she's not interested in learning tricks. Also, the wheels on the Penny handle the roads and our neighborhood trials way smoother, unlike my skateboard which are way too hard for my neighborhood.
i absolutely love mine. i don’t do tricks or anything, i just ride around my campus. it gets me places quick and is really smooth. would definitely recommend getting one.
Penny boards are decent and fun for short distance cruising, but I would strongly recommend looking into a Landyachtz Dinghy. I have both, and I prefer the Dinghy.
Completely agree with everything you mention , recently bought one 😢 luckily only for 300 pesos mxn of second hand like 15 dlls so it wasn’t so painful. 😅
I put grip tape on the deck which helps you tremendously with balance and keeping you planted. The more you ride the more you appreciate its compactness and portability. I love my Penny Board. BTW, I had both Penny and Nickel, and I actually prefer the Penny as the challenge it poses in you is almost daring that it is actually cute in a way. And that nice clicking sound the wheels make when it goes over narrow gaps on the surface. Oh and I changed out my bearings with Bones Reds -- it is very smooth.
1- hey Ogden! I've had a non original, relatively good quality penny during like 6 years and put abec9 bearings from a longboard and some 7.5 mm inline rollerskate wheels. it improved A LOT on any surface. It rolls more time and rolls better in any surface. The only con is that it vibrates more and it's like an inch taller. I did not need any riser even with my weight(165 pounds). The stability is not very different because pennys aren't the most stable board. Maybe you can try this for a video! it would be so cool! 2- I have an opportunity to buy a penny nickel(27") for about 65 dollars. I've seen your beautiful landyachtz turbo flight and I love it! but i can´t afford it. Should I modify the nickel with bigger wheels, risers and better bearings to get a similar board? or just save money and buy a landyachtz? i only like to relax cruising, and transporting. Not doing any trick. (the streets here are poorly maintained and they are full of cracks, little pebbles, rough terrain and gaps on the sidewalks, so using the standard 59mm wheels is IMPOSSIBLE. Saludos from Chile
I actually always wanted a penny board but i kinda already was aware of all of the problems of getting the smaller one. But thats not the only option. You can buy longer ones and i ended up getting the 32 inch one and it is super solid and does an excellent job for cruising, and its not to heavy and basically the size of a regular skateboard with the feel and shape of a cruiser. I definitely recommend getting actually grip tape for it tho and i just got bones rough rider wheels for it and those are amazing. Still rocking the penny bearings too ive never had to clean them and they still feel very good but i do recommended cleaning them if their dirty and putting bones speed cream in them after im just lazy.
I learned how to skate on a penny mainly bc it is a reliable cruiser board. Gets you to work, school, home . I like how it's just fast and mobile and alot of them are stylish and can hold alot of weight. You can't do as many tricks as a regular skateboard but when you discover a new trick its quite satisfying con I poorly lost a few of them or had some get ran over when I was trying to ride a penny with flip flops on my phone
I mean...all true (except for durability), but for $20 secondhand I'm not gonna turn down the fun of a Pennyboard. Great when riding beside your kids, and light when faffing around and not doing tricks or a full longboard cruise. Also not sure what you're comparing the wheels to (Plow Kings or Caguama?!) but they're plenty solid for "cracks and bumps" in the sidewalk. They're basically 60mm Chubby Hawgs which eat up most pavement.
My little 13 year old sister rides this thing like it's no big deal (it was even her first board, she got it when she was 10) and I, who's coming from longboarding, couldn't even properly stand on it, it felt SO uncomfortable :'D But I feel like my sister's able to ride almost any board now (I got her a proper longboard for her birthday!) since she started with the most "difficult" one, know what I mean?
Yeah I can see that for sure, and like it’s totally possible to ride I just don’t think it’s practical for longer and faster rides. Also they’re kinda pricey haha
I like the portability aspect, I had 2 longboards, 1 full size cruiser board, and a skatepark board, but I sold both longboards because they weren’t portable enough, trying to decide between getting the smallest penny shown in the vid, or the ‘nickel’ board.
So I bought the dinghy first before I got my penny board today. It was pretty fun and honestly I did not find cracks to be a challenge.. It was pretty smooth on flat pavement and was not particularly fast like my dinghy. I tried going down some hills thinking it would handle it similar to my dinghy but nope, I speed wobbled, fell and got road rash along with a mild sprained shoulder. Needless to say I will never ride down hills or attempt to go really fast on a penny board ever again.
Sounds like you just don't know what you're doing. Don't skate beyond your skill level if you don't want roadrash. I bomb hills on my penny every day and it's fine. Handles better than just about any other kind of board.
Not very durable plastic? I was skating next to the road and somehow it slipped out from underneath my feet and went onto the road. 🙄 So the thing got ran over, the front truck went flying and the back one was bent, BUT the deck remained unscathed. I replaced the trucks and wheels and still use it today.
My Penny “Nickel” arrived today. I’m beyond impressed by the quality of the materials and build. It’s far superior to my Magneto SUV. “Made in Taiwan” for the win! Can’t wait to go cruising by the river and shoreline here in Japan where I live.
I’ve had my Red nickel board since 2014. Out the box, i flipped the top washers on the trucks, and it was the smoothest ride i’d ever experienced for carving. it’s also the board that i learned to pump on. in a way, i was learning to skate on it if you think about it the tight turning radius. also the flex on the board helped with pumping too
i feel like it would be harder for taller people or adults to ride a penny board because they are small and hard to balance on, but smaller people like kids wouldn’t really have a problem.
I learned how to ride on a penny board, and it has translated well to every other board I’ve tried. Portable, quick, and quiet. Replace the original bearings with some reds. The plastic itself can be slippery, but I’ve never had too many problems. If you want to trick, it’s possible, but I just use mine for chill cruising and an actual skateboard for tricks. And the board handles cracks just fine assuming you have any measurable speed? Obviously the board depends on your needs, but don’t let this video turn you off if you’re a beginner. I’ve found used original penny boards for $20 online as well.
Dude, that’s actually some pretty good advices! I thought you would spill some hate but the argumentation is profound! Thank you for sharing your view!!!
As someone with size 12 men's shoe size, I never considered a Penny board, hah. Nothing under 8.25-8.5 inches wide for me. But we get a lot of moist weather in spring and autumn so maybe in the future I'll look at their 32" or 36" board for a deck that's not gonna be hurt when it gets a bit wet. Since we've had summer droughts for years now, that's gonna be pointless for months yet. As for a cruiser, I just got a Dinghy Blunt Fender deck in the mail and set it up with some locally made components (since local skate shops don't have the 2021 selection yet I had to get the deck from overseas).
Haha yeah that’s very understandable. I have shoe size 9 and it’s still small for me😂 also if you’re looking for a board that does well in damp weather, every board made by moonshinemfg is 100% waterproof, and they have a few cruisers too! Only problem is they’re sold out til mid summer I think :/
@@OgdenSikel Nice, I was just trying to remember earlier today which brand made them like that. Moonshine are quite pricey outside of the US, but maybe by the time fall rolls around I'll have talked myself into it.
Dude I wear a size 12 and I ride one every day. Dont let the size scare you. They are easy to ride, fast, agile, smooth, they coast over cracks and rocks. Literally the only con is you can't do any tricks. At least not very many. It's ideal as a commuter. I ride mine to and from work every day and have for years. I just swap out my bearings every month or so.
I like the eggboard mini cruiser. As small as a penny board but it's a lot wider so it's easier to ride (especially because I'm so used to wider longboards)
@@мѕи-н6л I have no problem either. I never stated that, this video is listing problems that many beginners might run into, because this is marketed as a beginners board.
Kids from the 70s all had boards like this, now we're just bigger Kids! and like the familiar feel. My children's boards just feel like big clown shoes
true, these were fun when i was 13 (actually i broke my wrist on my 13th birthday while learning to ride), so i switched to a nickel. just about to turn 19 and the nickel’s starting to feel small too. i love the penny skateboards company tho so i’ll have to consider some new alternatives unless i decide to keep my nickel. its size may be meh for my age, but it gets the job well done.
It's not about the size of the board. I'm a fully grown adult and I ride a penny. Once your balance and board control are where they need to be, it'll be so much fun. The smaller Penny's are so smooth and agile and they fly right over cracks and rocks. Making it ideal for a daily commuter.
Fun story: I was going to buy a dinghy turbo and the shipping is a lot higher than I thought so the total would be 300$, now I do have a loaded tan tien and wanted a cruiser cause is a bit more easy to carry around, but then is 300$ really worth I mean sure is good but with that amount I could buy a"rayne nae nae complete with paris trucks and orangatang wheels and good bearings" And yes I really love doing tricks so I might go with the dancer
Honestly, the international shipping costs really require consideration. Most Dinghies hereabouts are like 190 Euros because the stores gotta make their import costs back. That's what, 220 USD at current rates? More, of course, for the Turbo variant because it has that fiber glass layer. Yeah a Dinghy is good but is it *that* good? At that point I can start buying decks that are locally handcrafted, at least then I'm putting money into the local scene instead of sinking most of that money into shipping and brand name costs. I eventually talked myself into getting the Blunt Fender because at least those pressed wheel flares are like .. added value I guess. I really like feeling them under my feet. Don't find those on just any cruiser that size. I ordered the deck directly from Landyachtz. Can't import completes or the value of the package triggers additional import tariffs. Going Deck only and buying the rest from skate shops closer to home lets me keep the cost roughly on par with buying a complete Dinghy locally. Of course knowing my luck the 2021 line-up including the Blunt Fender will just show up in EU stores next month and I'll curse my impatience.
Honestly buying locally sourced decks is the best thing to do if the quality is there. I heard timber boards are awesome and they’re made somewhere in Europe if I’m correct
@@OgdenSikel Yeah, Timber are based in the Netherlands. Another one I've been impressed by is Hackbrett (southern Germany). Their offering is pretty varied (from Mini cruisers to freeride/downhill boards and a giant pintail) and they use a mix of Canadian maple and discarded pieces from local logging and wood-using industries which would otherwise just be thrown out. I got a very nice 30.9x8.8 cruiser deck made from maple and ash wood. And their smaller cruiser completes are priced similarly to Dinghies and they use polar bear trucks for them. Also, I like the understated look of wood with the name branded in. Low production numbers in each run though, since they're a small company. Still, nice way to support the local lads without having to start north of 300 Euro.
Longboards are for individuals who are too scared to ride a penny or regular skateboard. Suck it up and learn to actually skate. You'll be happy you did.
@@nathanxbondthat literally makes no sense he said he has trouble balancing on the board the penny board is to small for him so because he can stand on a penny board he’s scared and he would rather ride his longboard It’s been two years this comment is so funny you should have taken this down by now🤣
You know penny is life as I always love riding my penny ! Also I do have the same board as ya I love it . I don't know why you don't like it . I am all about the pennyboard ... If you want a bigger board why did you not get the 27 inch ?
I have one of these and loved it. But a pebble in 2016 made the board launch me off and I got a scrape on my arm which I still have today. Got a Landyachtz Dinghy Cruiser since I’m in Vancouver and it’s been a great experience.
I wouldn’t take any notice of this guys opinion on a penny boards ride. If you can actually skate these boards are remarkably stable for their size. I ride mine pretty hard at times and I’m forever amazed at its stability and how well it handles. It really feels like an extension of my body which naturally goes back to - can you skate?! Doesn’t look like the guy really can hence his problems riding a penny. My advice is buy a penny, swap out the wheels for some softer slightly bigger 78a 65mm. Ride as much as you can and you’ll reap the rewards of the 22” penny for its ride and small size when on the move!
Penny boards Are really good Idk what he is talking about you could get a nickel board they are a little bigger but I have a skateboard and I love it it isn't really good for cruising though and another thing I recemend is a long board hope this helps
get a wooden cruiser board, with nice concave! penny's are extremely overpriced for what you get and they are uncomfortable for riding. I'd look at boards from landyachtz, moonshinemfg, magneto, loaded, arbor, sector9....they'll all likely be better than a penny
Get a 22" penny. They're so much fun. Don't let the small size intimidate you. There are plenty of fully grown adults that shred them everyday. Myself included. Whatever you do, don't listen to this guy that made the video. He's dead wrong on everything. Everything he said, just know, in reality, it's the opposite.
Man some of the things your mentioning are just not true. Penny's will handle cracks and rocks better that any skateboard out there. They are extremely agile and very easy to turn. If you weren't on camera riding one, I'd assume that you'd never even been on one. And durability??? These things are indestructible. Especially compared to a wood deck. Edit: Every single con you mentioned is 100% incorrect. Like literally the opposite of what you said. I ride a penny to and from work every day and it's perfect. It would be a struggle with my normal deck.
@@OgdenSikel yeah but those things you're saying are not opinion. A plastic deck is obviously far more durable than a wooden one, etc.. If you're scared to ride a penny because they're small, just say so. Don't rag on penny. Get yourself a giant electric wooden longboard that's nice an easy to ride and involves no skill to ride and has almost no risk of injury. Sounds like that would be perfect for someone that's never skated before like yourself.
@@nathanxbond It sounds like you're comparing the Penny to a standard popsicle skateboard, not a mini cruiser. Objectively, a mini cruiser like the Dinghy which has larger and softer wheels and a wider and longer wheelbase will handle rough terrain better and roll faster, and a longboard will be smoother still. It's objectively true that narrow loose trucks are harder to balance on and control assuming the same turning radius as wider trucks. You might enjoy a Penny board but that doesn't make it the best for everyone, and Ogden is only stating facts.
Seeing this after buying a board at a sale for 12 EUR. ::D Well, I guess there's no turning back now (pun partially intended). But yes, I'd love to check out you suggestions!

I'm thinking of buying a Marley Cruz penny board. It is 29 inch length. What do you think? And this is my first time trying skateboarding
Penny boards are decent and fun for short distance cruising, but I would strongly recommend looking into a Landyachtz Dinghy. I have both, and I prefer the Dinghy.
Dinghy is really the good version of thd Penny
It’s also 3x the price of a penny
Penny boards are great for rough roads💪🏽
hmmmm thats debatable 😝
Smallest bruh, 22”. Portability is a huge factor for me, and it’s so easy to throw on my backpack
Go with the nickel board if you have big feet (size 12+)
@@nathanxbond do you slide?
@@Seasixk slide? As in power slide?
@@nathanxbond yes like while bombing hills
@@Seasixk no, it's not really possible to power slide like you would on a normal board. It's too narrow and the wheels are too soft.
Pro skater move is when you add grip tape and shock pads to your Penny Board
😳
Not very durable plastic? I was skating next to the road and somehow it slipped out from underneath my feet and went onto the road. 🙄 So the thing got ran over, the front truck went flying and the back one was bent, BUT the deck remained unscathed. I replaced the trucks and wheels and still use it today.
I love the penny board a lot, but it’s your opinion😊
Optimized, minimalist, no bullshit setup:
- all round cruiser: Penny 22
- normal skateboard
My Penny “Nickel” arrived today. I’m beyond impressed by the quality of the materials and build. It’s far superior to my Magneto SUV. “Made in Taiwan” for the win! Can’t wait to go cruising by the river and shoreline here in Japan where I live.
I’ve had my Red nickel board since 2014. Out the box, i flipped the top washers on the trucks, and it was the smoothest ride i’d ever experienced for carving. it’s also the board that i learned to pump on. in a way, i was learning to skate on it if you think about it the tight turning radius. also the flex on the board helped with pumping too
Bro, you just don't know how to use it 😂😂
The first thing doesn't make sense there is a 22 inch and a 27 inch
and they both suck lol
Ok I won' think of buying it after this video
You’re opinion mate
Yeah?
Just saying
i feel like it would be harder for taller people or adults to ride a penny board because they are small and hard to balance on, but smaller people like kids wouldn’t really have a problem.
they have two sizes
The entire board basicall fits to the sole of my one shoe at size 14 lol
Dude i wear a 10 used to wear 12 cuz of platypus wide feet never had an issue on a 22" penny lol
I have an eggboard, and I completely agree with you
You are aware that pennys come in all shapes and sizes, the longest being 32" long (not counting the Penny longboard), aren't you?
Yes I am. This video isn’t about those. It’s about the classic
@@OgdenSikel I have no problem skating with the original penny board and my shoe size is size 12 maybe you're not experienced enough 😂
@@мѕи-н6л I have no problem either. I never stated that, this video is listing problems that many beginners might run into, because this is marketed as a beginners board.
@@мѕи-н6л at 32” it’s pretty much a regular longboard and not so much a small penny board
@@Lucario9d 😂🤦🏻♂️
The 27 inch shall solve all your problems
Bro people don’t even talk about the Nickelboard, nor make videos
WTF I literally almost bought one the other day as I was without my skateboard
You should get one. You'll be instantly hooked. Don't listen to this kid. He's wrong about every single thing he mentions as a con.
Thanks for the info. Tell me what kind of skate you need to do a good flick and ollie.
Nah the stability factor isnt even a thing. If you ride a regular skateboard with super loose trucks its no issue
Was looking into getting a penny board and saw this and it was exactly what I was looking for. Had my board for a month now and I love it
Kids from the 70s all had boards like this, now we're just bigger Kids! and like the familiar feel. My children's boards just feel like big clown shoes
sorry but I disagree. I appreciate your opinion though.
That’s cool
true, these were fun when i was 13 (actually i broke my wrist on my 13th birthday while learning to ride), so i switched to a nickel. just about to turn 19 and the nickel’s starting to feel small too. i love the penny skateboards company tho so i’ll have to consider some new alternatives unless i decide to keep my nickel. its size may be meh for my age, but it gets the job well done.
It's not about the size of the board. I'm a fully grown adult and I ride a penny. Once your balance and board control are where they need to be, it'll be so much fun. The smaller Penny's are so smooth and agile and they fly right over cracks and rocks. Making it ideal for a daily commuter.
Thanks a lot for this vid!
Get a Nickle, and replace the wheels with 75mm.. you won't need to worry about cracks, stones, bumps
I have a nickel board that I’ve never used so I can try this out
Only if you're scared and don't know what you're doing on a skateboard.
Excellent advice
Had one growing up, I thought it was a great cruiser.
"Don't buy a Citoren Hatchback because it can't reach top speeds and compete in races like a Mclaren"
What if I don't need to do those things?
To late , im a boss at penny boarding and only started yesterday
It's the best skateboard I've ever had, even bought a second one
You can literally run them over with a car and they’re fine and he’s talking about durability lol
I love the penny board because noone expects me to do a kickflip or even an ollie. And it looks hilarious. Lol
Hahaha, I like your way of thinking 🙂
go buy a longboard then and see how much space it will take in your car
Nah it doesn't. Get a cruiser board but not pennyboard
What do you think of the lander rio instead?
Fun story: I was going to buy a dinghy turbo and the shipping is a lot higher than I thought so the total would be 300$, now I do have a loaded tan tien and wanted a cruiser cause is a bit more easy to carry around, but then is 300$ really worth I mean sure is good but with that amount I could buy a"rayne nae nae complete with paris trucks and orangatang wheels and good bearings" And yes I really love doing tricks so I might go with the dancer
300 for a dinghy turbo is mad, i got mine for $180
@@exglued2394 I know right the shipping is pretty much the same price of the product
Love the penny (Nickel) it’s great for cruising just needs some grip tape
I’m size 14 shoe and my foot is bigger than one they are fun for a few minutes but then they are just annoying and I would rather ride my longboard
Longboards are for individuals who are too scared to ride a penny or regular skateboard. Suck it up and learn to actually skate. You'll be happy you did.
@@nathanxbondthat literally makes no sense he said he has trouble balancing on the board the penny board is to small for him so because he can stand on a penny board he’s scared and he would rather ride his longboard It’s been two years this comment is so funny you should have taken this down by now🤣
It's good to put in a backpack and use to commute. I wouldn't use it to go out for a day just to skate.
You know penny is life as I always love riding my penny ! Also I do have the same board as ya I love it . I don't know why you don't like it . I am all about the pennyboard ... If you want a bigger board why did you not get the 27 inch ?
59mm 83a durometer wheels should get over the biggest of cracks
me when pennyboarding: *smoothly balancing*
me when trying skateboard from decathlon: *ulitimatley falls 1 nanosecond I stepped on it*
🤔🤔
well, rain resistense is a big deal. hybrid bearings and you’re good… what U think?
That is bc u r used to a skateboard and also it depends on what size board u get
I skated pennies and the worst thing about them is there trucks always break on me.
I stepped on my friends penny board once and just stepped off and said nope
Don't be scared. They're so much fun.
My tony hawk edition penny came with grip tape on it.
I have one of these and loved it. But a pebble in 2016 made the board launch me off and I got a scrape on my arm which I still have today. Got a Landyachtz Dinghy Cruiser since I’m in Vancouver and it’s been a great experience.
it depends on the person so dont go around saying you shouldnt buy it
My penny board it wood and it feels amazing to me
I really should have gone with the 27 inch instead of the 22 inch, a lil bigger but still pretty portable and more foot space
If you gonna get the 27 inch I’d just get a landyachtz dinghy. The reason the penny is clutch is due to water durability and the small size
Wanna know if I can skate? Watch my last video.
Thanks bro
Quality content 🙌
What should I buy? I don’t know how skateboard will work.
@@OgdenSikel thanks!
Pennyboards are amazing
You didn't put a space and RUclips had a translate thing on it lmao
I learned to ride on a 22 inch penny board ripoff and it was perfect for me
Cool!
Don’t buy a penny board, proceeds to have fun
Man some of the things your mentioning are just not true. Penny's will handle cracks and rocks better that any skateboard out there. They are extremely agile and very easy to turn. If you weren't on camera riding one, I'd assume that you'd never even been on one. And durability??? These things are indestructible. Especially compared to a wood deck.
Edit: Every single con you mentioned is 100% incorrect. Like literally the opposite of what you said. I ride a penny to and from work every day and it's perfect. It would be a struggle with my normal deck.
That’s cool for you, not the case for me. Everyone’s different ig
I have a cruiser and regular board, I bought my penny to take with me on flights
Me and my friends just wanna skate around our village
village? yea, i wanna ride around my neighborhood
Just cuz he says that they suck doesn't me we should think it sucks
have you gone through puberty?
does grass grow?
You have idea how many times I've fallen flat on my face when I'm riding a penny board, these things suck LOL idk how people used to ride em
Just get a downhill setup and skate that everywhere.
what about mini-cruisers with maple or bamboo board? the basic same format but with a little bit concaves, a better grip, and good resistance?
if you replaced the wheels with skate board wheels, can you go over cracks?
No.
Seeing this after buying a board at a sale for 12 EUR. ::D Well, I guess there's no turning back now (pun partially intended). But yes, I'd love to check out you suggestions!
I have a board that’s the size of a penny board but has grip tape and it’s wooden and has big ass wheels.
Penny boards are meant for cruising
Yeah…too bad they suck at cruising :/
