My boyfriend was diagnosed with extremely high cholesterol about 3 years ago. The doctor wanted to put him on med's right away but he asked if he could have time to improve his cholesterol with diet. He started eating whole food plant based with me. He was your typical guy eating meat with every meal but he did eat veggies and fruit too. He thought he was eating very healthy. 6 months after eating WFPB he went back for a blood test it came back perfect! The doctor was really surprised and impressed. She told him to keep doing what he was doing and if he did want meat to only have it as a treat once a week. After 3 years he no longer craves meat! I'm very happy with how well he is doing.

I went on a whole food plant based diet specifically because my cholesterol was high and I didn't want to take meds. Total cholesterol was 240 and in 6 weeks it dropped to 132. LDL was 170 and it dropped to 78. My doctor told me that I need to get retested because nobody has that kind of a drop in 6 weeks!

My total cholesterol was 195, and my doctor told me I my cholesterol is fine, and nothing to worry about. My LDL was 122. I think these are not good numbers at all, and have been plant based for a few weeks now. But now I'm concerned my doctor won't allow me to get retested, because she doesn't consider me to be in the unhealthy zone for cholesterol. I live in Canada.

I was on a ketogenic diet for two months (eating eggs, bacon and cheese everyday) and my LDL cholesterol went from 85 to 146. I stopped that stupid diet immediately. I switched to a low fat vegetarian diet (all plants except skim milk and nonfat Greek yogurt) and my LDL cholesterol dropped back to 80 three months later. I was stupidly trying to fix my type 2 diabetes with the ketogenic diet. My blood sugar did get lower on keto but I could have done the same thing with a low fat high carbohydrate diet plus exercise and lowered my chances of developing heart disease at the same time. After switching to the low fat vegetarian diet my blood sugar dropped even further.

Honestly, I think most people really think their heart disease, obesity, etc. are "genetic" and that there is nothing they can do about it besides taking a pill or going through a procedure. Their doctors literally tell them this. I know this is the case with members of my family, several of them have had heart problems for most of their lives, and if you ask about it they will say it "runs in their family". It's really unfortunate!! People just put too much trust in their doctors for their health. Doctors are good at moving veins from their legs to their heart, but they don't know shit about nutrition.

When I went vegan he began preaching to me about "how I should be eating chicken", and of course I was angry and thought he had no right to preached to me since he had a quad bypass. It took me 3 years to figured out my dad was WORRY THAT I WAS NOT EATING MEAT, since he was BRAINWASHED to believed you cannot be healthy without eating meat!!!!. Thank you for this! I have been telling my patients for a while now that a post-prandial increase in cholesterol is much more important marker than their fasting cholesterol. Why? Because most of my patients are only fasting while sleeping, and only for the last couple of hours of that sleep. Many of my patients no longer even experience hunger on a regular basis, and live their day topping off the tank constantly. They LIVE in a post-prandial state, and THAT is what we need to be addressing. Partly due to your channel, I am making a switch to vegan. I eat only 4 non-vegan meals a month now (those are almost always slip-ups as I learn the ropes), and hope to be fully vegan by the end of 2016.

That was one of the factors that pushed me to go vegan. Now my total is under 130 and LDL is around 75. It didn't take long either. Vegetarian diets can be not so great for cholesterol if you eat cheese in significant quantities. Cheese is mostly all fat and cholesterol. Eggs are also really bad for cholesterol. Honestly, eggs and cheese are probably the worst foods for your health in terms of animal products, which is ironic because so many people find being vegetarian "easier". Maybe it is, in a western culture, but it's only healthier in proportion to how much you don't eat cheese and eggs.

"So for many years you had high cholesterol and you didn't die, therefore cholesterol is what causes death by CHD. That explains everything! lol"
When nothing is particularly funny, the incongruence of an "lol" is often a sign of defensiveness. Note that Diaz, Mainous, Williamson, Johnson, and Knoll (2012) found men were >50% more likely to underestimate their risks of diabetes, over 8xs more likely to underestimate their risks of coronary heart disease, etc. (Table 3). Ana admitted 200 was a high cholesterol level as a 12 yr old. Kavanagh, Shephard, Hamm, Mertens, and Thacker (2000) confirm 200 mg/dl is a substantial cardiac risk factor. So, she did something about it. Serum cholesterol tends to increase with age but she apparently reversed that trend through diet. Neat, huh? She indicated an additional diet change experiment may further reduce cholesterol levels. So, she recognized diet changes do alter serum cholesterol and that she is capable of making such changes. These are the two main factors in establishing motivation and making behavioral changes that lead to improved health according to Marteau and Lerman (2001). This is also significant since Imes and Lewis (2014) documented patients who claimed that merely "11% were advised on a low-fat diet and 18% were recommended to increase their physical activity" (Results, para. 10). Even among participants who were at high-risk for coronary heart disease, merely 26% improved their diets to reduce their risks of coronary heart disease (Diaz, et al., 2012, Table 3).

@@MictheVegan Nathan Pritikin talked about this in one of his lectures. If you eat too much cholesterol , it accumulates in your liver and in your bile ducts and causes gallstones. Optimum fuction for the human body is to be losing cholesterol out of the body in significant quantities, not packing it in beyond our ability to excrete it. That's why he limited people on his diet plan to no more than 2 ounces of lean meat a day, and absolutely no egg yolks or feedlot beef. Just got the official numbers:
Total cholesterol was 229, now 158.
    HDL was 54, now 48.
    LDL was 130, now 91
Triglycerides went from 223 to 97.

I was having a conversation the other day with a friend about media deception in advertising (in a non-food context) and I mentioned that the egg industry was fantastic at that since everyone thinks they are a health food when they legally they cant make any such claims due to the cholesterol levels. My friend was like "but dont eggs have good cholesterol?"....... Further proof that their advertisement works, sadly.

I've had people mention this "Cholesterol is not bad for you, recent studies show" stuff, and I've not had an effective response. Intuitively, I felt it was probably bunk, having seen industry sponsored "research" in other areas, and I certainly continued to avoid cholesterol (and all animal products) in my eating. There are people with extremely high cholesterol that has 0 cardiovascular diseases. Talk to any cardiologist about the subject and you would be surprised at how many times this has happened. Diets high in sugars and refined processed products are more likely to be found as the cause of cardiovascular disease along with other factors. Cholesterol is a building block that your body needs for soooooooooo many things not just hormones as people think. Virtually every cell in your body needs it especially your brain. AND no, eggs won't kill you. If anything that is going to kill you is the refined sugar, the processed crap, fast food, etc. I laughed when people tell me oh no I am not touching that egg because it has a lot of cholesterol and then they go out and eat at some fast food place or they get some donuts or they simply go for a big snack or some sweets. For the viewers, just make sure that you have a balanced diet when comes to fats. This means that you are keeping in check your unsaturated fats so your HDL is also high and able to clear any cholesterol from the bloodstream that hasn't been used. Also, increase your fiber intake so, by the time the HDL takes the LDL back to the liver to be excreted through the bile, the LDL binds to that fiber in your intestine and doesn't get reabsorbed.

You have absolutely no idea what cholesterol is and its imperative function in the human body. Even the measure is wrong. The 'serum cholesterol' level is a measure of lipoproteins in the blood. HDL and LDL are lipoproteins. Cholesterol, an organic molecule, can't be classed into good or bad if the measure that has been done is to measure a protein!! Cholesterol doesn't cause artherosclerosis! It is caused by damage to the blood vessel walls. Cholesterol is part of the 'scab' which is artherosclerorsis.

University of Harvard reported no actual increase in heart attacks from eating eggs, funny how you forgot to mention that part. Yes cholesterol does in fact raise cholesterol but it is the ratio of LDL to HDL that really matters and eggs have been shown to maintain a good ratio. My family has eaten eggs regularly for MANY years, my great grandmother lived to 97, grandmother lived to 95, grandfather lived to 88 and none of them died due to heart attacks oh and my other grandmother is still alive at 81. I know my family history does not carry as much weight as say a Harvard University study but that history does agree with their findings. Granted genetics have just as much to do with it as diet, and who knows maybe they all would have lived to 110 had they not eaten eggs, but eating eggs for breakfast every day sure did not do them any noticeable harm so I am inclined to believe the Harvard study.

They've been eating 3 fried eggs, bacon, and buttered toast each morning for breakfast. When I asked her why she's still eating this stuff, she told me, and I quote "eggs are high in good cholesterol, which lowers your bad cholesterol. bacon is high in saturated fat which is the good kind of fat that helps you lose weight, and that's why we butter our toast, too." These misconceptions the industry has fed her are literally killing her. I don't know what to tell her anymore because she holds so fast and is so defensive of her "wheat belly" and "ketogenic" diets.

Highlander What science? Do you have reliable studies to back up your claim? Did you even watch his video? Mic backs his claims up with specific scientific studies. Also, science is not this single entity that is completely conclusive and unanimous. There is debate and disagreement in the scientific community about a wide variety of topics. Saying 'science contradicts' something is unfounded and as ridiculous as saying 'scientists believe that...' The truth is that some scientific studies can be seriously flawed, depending on the methodology used. When evaluating a scientific source one must evaluate the methodology of the study itself. An example of flawed methodology is the use of p-hacking. Confirmation bias is a massive issue and the scientific community and you need to be careful what you believe. Always evaluate your sources and go vegan 😄

Hi Mic, I thought I'd comment on one of your videos that is relevant to the question I have for you, hence why I am commenting on a 4 year old video! First off, I am a big fan of your videos and have been watching them for a few years, please keep up the good work! Also, I am jealous of your tiny house! 😭
Now on to the question: I have been vegan for 2.5 years (I'd say about 80% healthy whole foods, but I sometimes have vegan junk food and I use olive oil and rapeseed oil in my cooking), yet my cholesterol is still too high. I have had high cholesterol at least since I was 21 (I am now 29) and I know this because my cholesterol results back then were the reason I went on a health kick and lost a bunch of weight. My cholesterol levels went down a bit, but my total cholesterol is still over 5, which is the cut-off point for 'normal' in the UK. I requested further testing from my doctor and they tested my blood for something called lipoprotein A and my numbers were much higher than normal (up to 500 was normal and my levels were 1288, sorry, I can't remember the units in which this was measured). The doctor told me that levels of lipoprotein A are genetically determined and don't respond to lifestyle changes, and that they are a marker for increased danger of heart disease.
I have seen your videos on oil and was wondering if there had been any studies on the effects of a 100% whole food plant based diet on people with genetic high levels of lipoprotein A? Could a very strict no-oil diet help me lower my cholesterol or will this still have no effect at all? It would be great if you could make a video on this, as I'm sure I'm not the only vegan who can't seem to lower their cholesterol! 😣

Cholesterol and saturated fat are not the culprit of clogged arteries. It is the vegetable oil, especially from the soybeans oil, where it consist of high level of phospholipids, especially the two called phosphatidylinositol (PI) and phosphatidylcholine (PC). These two molecules are the true heart killers, and unfortunately they are 40% or more in the foods within our supermaket. they are in a ingredient called soy lecithin, sometimes called soy or lecithin on its own.

I am actually recovering from acute liver poisoning which came from a variety of environmental factors as well as having been exposed to very yucky meat which has cost me years of healthy functioning, being a marathoner and undergoing over a dozen ercps (bile duct from thr liver to small intestine clean outs). When I first had some symptoms I was running over 9 miles a day was eating only lean meats and little cheese and was at ideal bmi and weight (which is very thin by American standards). Mt blood work showed a nad cholesterol leve of 214 meaning i was at risk for a heart attack. At thw time my doctors brilliant advise is that I was anemic and vitimen deficiencint so I needed to drink more milk and periodically have red meat. This not only made everything worse but set me on a path of having other problems at 30 that most dont see into their 70s. I went vegan after my ladt ercp in June and not only have most my symptoms and illness been greatly diminished but for the first time in 3 years my bad cholesterol numbers are down to almost zero. I wish you could sue for having doctors tell you not to fo vegan because it would kill you when it actually is the best way to help cure you

I get where this information comes from but no where does anyone mention why cholesterol showed up in the first place? Does the public know the real function of cholesterol in your body? Your body is capable to produce cholesterol as needed, it is there to heal oxidation that appears in our blood vessels, so the next wuestion should be why is there so much oxidation damage in our blood vessels? Due to the body being overloaded with carbs. I am not for or against any dietary choice, but to really get the most benifits out of your dietary choices we need to understand how the body is designed to function, and we are not designed to consume so much carbohydrates in our diet, it overloads our systems, spikes our insulin sending the body into fight-or-flight mode and disrupts the functioning of our digestive system. This leads to so many other chronic illnessess that we face as humanity today. Eating to much of anything is bad for you, no matter how good science shows it to be.

I dropped my total cholesterol 49 points and my LDL 47 points in 5 weeks cutting out meat. I am a 65 year old female. I will cut out eggs and see if I can get my total below 150 and my LDL below 80.

Wow go figure, eating cholesterol raises cholesterol. Never saw that coming... lol.

The actual TRUTH is a low carb diet (high cholesterol foods with high fat and low carbs) raises GOOD cholesterol while lowering bad. My cholesterol rating was 3 points from being off the bottom of the risk chart a year AFTER being on a low carb diet for 5 months in which I lost over 50 pounds. My doctor said he never saw anyone with cholesterol levels like that in his life and he couldn't tell me not to eat anything as I seemed to be a genetic freak. I only learned later that it was quite possibly the low carb diet that raised my good cholesterol so much and thus reduced the overall risk. I was eating over 3 dozen eggs a week on that diet (big no no according to some dietitians and absolute nonsense on a low carb diet as that proved) and had the BEST cholesterol numbers he had seen in his entire life.
Don't believe half truths/lies. It's CARBS that absorb the bad cholesterol through fat, not the fat alone (i.e. the WORST thing you can do is eat a big fatty steak with a baked potato as that potato causes your body to absorb the cholesterol and fat from the steak; otherwise it just passes right through and raises good cholesterol along the way). You can do low carb on a vegetarian diet easy enough (vegan would be a lot harder). There's also a genetic factor. Some people have lower or higher cholesterol than others eating the exact same foods.

"The actual TRUTH is a low carb diet (high cholesterol foods with high fat and low carbs) raises GOOD cholesterol while lowering bad. " Are you saying you got your LDL into the healthy range (under 70)?

I train for strength and conditioning 6 days a week. My diet consists of 40% fats, the majority of which are saturated fats from meat and raw whole milk dairy products, 35% protein, and only 25% of carbs, which are primarily from fruits and vegetables and virtually no grains, and yet I have a net cholesterol of 165. Care to explain that?

Some people are very sensitive to dietary cholesterol but some like myself can eat 2 eggs and one portion of meat a day without having high cholesterol. I eat oatmeal unpolished rice and 3 fruits and 2 servings of veggies.

You mean you're still able to keep your LDL in the healthy range (under 70, or better yet, 67)?

Went vegan to lower cholesterol. LDL went from 112 to 72. Total from 212 to 169. Test was taken after 6 months and an actual bag of chips.

Glen M not being a big junk eater to begin with that part stayed the same. I go out to eat 1-2 times per week and that's usually a high fat meal. Usually eat chips once per week. Definitely indulge in cookies candy cake during holiday times. Otherwise it's the hclf plant based diet.
It was a removal of meat and eggs - I ate eggs every day. Also removing oil from every day cooking.

you didn't debunk it, the studies you cited look at meals with both saturated fats, trans fats from margarine and dietary cholesterol, so the changes can easily be attributed to trans and saturated fats rather than dietary cholesterol, that being said, while there might be an initial increase from dietary cholesterol in blood cholesterol, the body will usually lower its production of cholesterol instead.
    nice misrepresentation though!!

I'm vegan, but this is very misleading. You don't fully explain the x and y axis. You talk as if the y axis is the relative increase, but it's just the absolute difference. So the relative increase could be negligible and the graph would still look the same, it would only change the scale of the y axis. Also, the higher end of dietary cholesterol intake there is an insane amount, equivalent to about 15 eggs a day, but it only raises the blood cholesterol by about 25% (or much less if it's already high).

    I have a couple doubts:
    1. If you debunk the statement “eating cholesterol won’t raise your cholesterol level”, how do you advocate “eating carbs like starch won’t raise your blood sugar level”? They both stand on the point that cholesterol and sugar in your blood decreases with time and it decreases faster when you take higher doses. How would you argue carbs are safe while cholesterol is not? What’s the main different between the tends of dropping of the two?
    2. According to your graph, cholesterol level drops with time but before it reduces to a safe level, a meat-eater would take lunch or dinner and make it bad once again. Ok, does that mean one can make his/her cholesterol level normal if the one cuts animal products in one day? If so, then a meat-eater would say, okay, assuming you’re right, I’m healthy now, and I’ll just continue eating meat and egg till I’m old and my cholesterol reaches a dangerous level then I’ll have vegan diets and I’ll be healthy in one day.
I like this video, especially the part debunking their “cholesterol ceiling”. Man, these people have been thinking their brains out to create such arguments.

The body is adapted to eating very high levels of carbs--assuming you are also eating very low levels of fat and don't have excess fat built up in your muscle cells. If you eat too much fat and have too much fat in your muscle cells, then yes, your body struggles to process carbs, but if fat levels are very low, it does fine.
See the research summarized in the 5-minute video below, to explain this:

This is not correct. The greatest factor to serum cholesterol levels is the mix of carbohydrates and fats you consume. The reason why eggs are brought up so often is they contain a lot of dietary cholesterol but very little fat and thus do not contribute to an increase in serum cholesterol. This "egg lobby" red hearing is ignoring the majority of literature on the subject. It is ok to be a vegan but you are misinforming your audience due to you ignorance. Biologists and nutritional scientist at all the worlds top universities disagree with your conclusions.
