It is really important to only mix one bag at a time. If you mix two bags at once, the heat from the mixture starting to cure will make the whole load go hard very quickly. For this reason, you need one person to spread the grout, and another to mix the next bucket (so, you need two buckets per person spreading), unless one bucket will do the whole area you plan to grout (that is, a small area). You cannot add more water, but you can use the mixer to make it a bit softer if it hardens too quickly in the bucket. Hot humid climates make it go off really quickly, where you might even have to mix half a bag at a time. Best practice is to seal off the room(s) and use a dehumidifier if you are in a very warm humid climate. Grouting is by far the toughest part of a tiling project. Some grouts stay dry and gritty, and fall out at the first wash (not good), like dry cookie dough.

    • @StonemanRocks
      @StonemanRocks 2 года назад

Omg seal off the room and use a what? Refrigerated air unit? Because thats what refrigerated air conditioners do is remove moisture from the air! Im thinking dont worry about it! Grout is the easy part! If your grout is “falling out” and gritty after you wash it once, please step away from the grout bucket and call a tile guy! Lol And omg no dont mix half a bag of colored grout! The dyes might not be mixed all together with the sand etc equally resulting in off colors between the 2 halves! Thats just stupid! Your statements are just plain incorrect in a lot of ways! Sorry!

I'm just reading the mapei FAQ website and found this: "Warmer temperatures or warm water will shorten the spreadability time. Storing Ultracolor Plus FA in an non-air-conditioned space can also lead to faster set times". What do you guys think? Could that be the reason why it all went downhill? They also have this grout haze remover that maybe could help cleaning it up. I think it's a good idea to contact mapei company about this issue. Maybe you'll get a refund or any guidance from them. Anyways, sorry to hear that it was that bad for you. Let's hope all the other projects will be much nicer to do. Lots of love from Poland!

The final color is way off too it sounds like. I think the grout ingredients were mis-measured. But I completely agree with the temperature part too. The bathroom is a small space, probably pretty warm in there.

    • @StonemanRocks

I have noticed mapei products in general are water sensitive both grouts and mortars! They all tend to setup fast!

The grout haze remover is just a weak acid of some kind ! The efflorescence is alkaline and so its neutralized by the acid !

Don’t be too disheartened it’s an easy enough mistake for anyone to make, I would say it’s definitely because of the two bag mix if you had done one then cleaned sponged that before carrying on it would more than likely been fine, but this of course is said in hindsight, nobody would have thought about the mix hardening so quickly in such a small space. I would say if it come up to an ok standard and the colour darkens all is good, but if there’s a chance that when you’re sitting on the toilet all the small faults jump out at you then rip it up and start over, it will probably cause you less stress in the long run. It’s obvious this upset you a lot try not to let it get you down, sending you supporting vibes and virtual hugs 🤗 from Dave in the UK 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 x x

I totally understand the frustration. You 2 do such good work and to have something like this happen just seems to take all of the wind out of the sails! But, quilting comes to mind. I do quilts and I try my best to make them as "perfect" as I can. Some people will make one block wrong on purpose. It seems they feel the need to do this so they can remember they are humans and not perfect. I don't do that in my quilt. There are little imperfections (and sometimes bigger ones) without me trying to make them on purpose. So, I just think you have a home that's turning out like a lovely quilt! :-) Whether it was because of you or the materials you were working with - it's there but it will be ok. And at some time I'm sure at least the members wouldn't mind you sharing the floor with us. We are members because we want to be supportive even though we know you're just as human as the rest of us. (((HUGS))) Doug & Ashley, you're doing a great job!

My hubby said that they used to just mix up 'part' of a bag at a time and work in sections. Do a section and get it wiped down and then mix more and do the next section. Some grouts are 'fast drying.' It may take longer, mix work, clean. Mix, work, clean; mix, work, clean. But possibly in the end you will not be so hot and tired....and disappointed. It will probably turn out OK. I remember my Grandma telling me once that you should not double some recipies when baking because the results will not be the same, so perhaps that rule may apply with some jobs like that.

I commend you for sharing what happened with the tiling and grout. It will help someone down the road who are also doing their own DIYing. I like your attitude of things don't have to be perfect. Hi, I am a 28 year tile setter, & I see you were using the rapid-set grout & mixed it a little dry on a hot day. That stuff will fire off in the bucket for sure, especially mixing it with a drill on hot day .. it adds a lot of air to the mix which speeds up the setting way too fast. Ive seen guys ruin hundreds of feet of floors doing that, in the end all the tile had to be removed & re-installed

Also, go back to Lowe's or Home Depot and talk to the flooring specialist---he/she will show you what products are available to solve this issue. I worked in the flooring department at my local Lowe's. We had three wonderful flooring specialists---two of them actually had been in the flooring business. They had both retired from the flooring business---over time, it's hard on your knees---but they still loved it and were encyclopedic in knowledge. I learned so much just working with them. 1. Hot day. Surely that accelerates curing.
    2. Mixing a large amount of grout. Better to mix small batches.
    3. Egg beater mixing. Aerates the mix, which accelerates curing.
    4. Add water as soon as you see the grout setting up
    5. Grout colorant to darken.
    6. Move in the same direction when laying the grout sheets.
    7. Sandpaper the grout. If too much to sand, try a diamond oscillating tool blade.
    8. Ask Maipei for advice.
    9. You already understand the perversity of inanimate objects.
    10. You might have to adjust your culture, and deploy a few carefully selected cuss words.

AWW you guys! My son-in-law has been doing tile for over 20 years. Replacement grout will set up faster, especially if the mix is "dry". He said if you use the replacement grout again and it sets up quickly, DO NOT be afraid to add more water to get the consistency needed. Usually that type of grout is used to replace/repair previously tiled areas. Nothing wrong with using for a new tile job, just make it a bit wetter and it will take a bit longer to dry. I'm sure the floor will look great! Just frustrating!

If you mix to much it wil setup even quicker because its a chemical proces the more volume you mix together the more heat it produces and the heat wil accelerate the curing
If i mix it its like thin yoghurt and i do a max of halve a bag
I know you love your tiles and only way to get it like you wanted it is to begin al over again you deserve that beautiful floor
Sometimes you just have bad luck
Next time use a primer on your base board it helps a lot with sucking out the moisture in the tile adhesive and a flexibele adhesive gives you more time to adjust the tiles

Most mortars and grouts have a working time written on the bag. I usually only mix the amount I can apply in HALF the working time specified at a time to make sure it will not exotherm. All of these type of materials cure by generating their own heat rather than just drying like joint compound or putty. Small batches are the way to go with these types of materials.

Sounds like you got an old bag of grout- that stuff is only good for one year as long as the grout stays at 73° or below- also depending on if you used super cold water (colder the better) or if the bag sat in the car while it was hot out can also contaminate it-A lot of reviews for that brand state that it’s ultra sensitive to water even one extra drop can make it act up not sure if that is part of the issue either

There is always ways to over come it..lay a rug …continue to make the rest beautiful! Your great at that🥰There is something about a double batch of anything always seems to change the balance of things ie batch cooking …baking bread etc! I can’t cook that well and I certainly can’t lay tile so you are way ahead of many of us! A new day always helps! 🙋🏻‍♀️🇬🇧💕jane

Have loved watching your channel for many years.. I started back when you were doing your first remodel. I have done many tile jobs. When I watched you mix the grout it looked much drier then I mix mine and you appeared to be struggling with it from the start. I know you stated you followed the directions for mixing the correct amount of water, I never use the amount they state on the package. I always mix it slightly thicker then cake batter. It is easier to work into the joints then if it is to stiff. It takes a little longer to set up but you will be much happier with the results. Something was definitely wrong with the grout to cause it to set up so quickly. I would contact the manufacturer to let them know the issue you had. Don't give up on using the small tiles if that is what you like. I did do one tile job where the grout did not come out like dark chocolate, like it was suppose to. I took pictures of it and went to Home Depot and requested a refund., which they gave me. I still wasn't happy with the shade of it but at least I did get my money back. Like you, I remodeled every house I bought. Keep making these videos.

That clip was cut short mixing it in the bucket. Our grout was mixed wet, but it started drying fast, like just walking from the porch to the room. We may have gotten an answer by the company of what the issue was so we'll discuss that in a video sometime.

What u have taught us. Stay calm… evaluate the problem and fix what u can. Decide what went wrong and change that. I understand that u want the beauty of the tiles to shine through but who says they won’t. Long way to the finish line. Ashley I could really appreciate how u laid the tiles out exactly how they were to go in. That’s perfect when dealing with small decorative tiles.

Two other DIY channels I watch (Stud Pack and Home Renovision) have both cautioned about using rapid set grouts. My guess of what happened here is that the mixing instructions were to do it at a low rpm or even by hand, and using a drill at a higher rpm for the mix created extra heat via friction which accelerated the set.
After a harrowing experience of their own with ultra fast setting grout on one of their tile jobs when using a rapid set grout, Stud Pack still uses a drill for their rapid set grout mix, but for far less than the 5 minutes of recommended mixing, basically only power mixing until the grout consistency is smooth after about 30-45 seconds.

    • @diyfferent
      @diyfferent  2 года назад +2

Yea, it's strange that the little picture on the bag shows a power mixer being used. They should update their directions to say to only mix by hand. It would solve a lot of problems people have with this grout.

  • @gelwood99

We used that brand in the 90-minute set after researching the bag they sold us the first time which was what you bought. He watched a Canadian DIYer that said if you have workers to help work the grout and wipe it off, it sets too fast for a single person to work. The bucket got hot because it chemically works to set. Once to add water it starts the set timer so by mixing both bags you started the timer of how much time you had to work. I hate this happened on your floor. Lessons learned or the hardest when they don't go as planned. Hopefully, you can figure out how to fix it to look good enough. Otherwise, it might be worth it to start over or learn to live with it, before you put up the walls!

You are right it was most likely mixing two bags at once. Created too much heat. Just take the loss and rip it out and start over. 10 years from now it won’t matter if you do it over. But an ugly floor will still be there and stare at you and taunt you if you don’t.
