- Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos gave the Baccalaureate address to Princeton University's Class of 2010. Bezos graduated from Princeton in 1986 with a degree in computer science and electrical engineering. He was introduced by Princeton University President Shirley M. Tilghman.
Bezos spoke to the Class of 2010 about the difference between choices and gifts. Cleverness, Bezos pointed out, is a gift, while being kind to others is a choice. One's character, he suggested, is reflected not in the gifts one is endowed with at birth but rather by the choices one makes over the course of a lifetime. Full transcript here:

10:50 It’s harder to be kind than clever. Kindness is a choice. Cleverness is a gift.
he starts at 6:25
too funny:)
Not all heroes wear a cape.
Bitch spoke for 6 minutes ,
I thought that introduction would never end
@@demetrik8642 same wasted another 5 min of my life...
I Heard a part of this speech on another channel and had to listen to the whole speech. Wow. What an incredible heart felt speech.
That exactly happened with me!
Came here from the introduction of my composition for an exam that quoted his words
"It's harder to be kind than clever."😊
Best quality = 240p? Seriously @princeton?
Can you upload a slightly higher quality version of the original video so it isn't so blurry?
Researcher Lol ya
Unfortunately, that is a limitation of RUclips from that time.
The footage exists in higher resolution most likely.
Researcher why does it matter what the quality is? Your supposed to listen to it not watch it
skip to 6:15
Thank you!!
This is a life changing speech..Thanks to the Uploader
Just finished the audio book "The Everything Store" it was very good and really show you who Jeff Bezo is.
In the end, we are our choices - WOW
I love the focus on choices making us what we really are! I wonder what he means by "service", but I like how he clarified that being clever and kind aren't opposites. You can be clever and not stomp on other people. The choice is what you do with your gifts.
Your brainwash is complete.
Thanks
I enjoyed the video very much ! The resolution, such as it is, still can be moderately acceptable. Good Job !! Princeton University. You proved I have good eyesight.
This is really inspiring as well as also reminding me of my precious old days when my grandmother was with me.
1:25 "Bezos" (pronunciation)
is there a high-definition version ?
Thank you Jeff!!!
Among the many words~ my favorite words is that
"You will understand that it`s harder to kind than clever"
It is the most inspiring speech I ever heard!!! Thank you so much !!!🙏✨
And at the end, he decided to be clever...
In what ways though????
aha plus his ugly wife
very 'clever'
did? he
'escape' To Paris ? if yes
wiTh which
woman we
did
no
journey To Paris FrancE
loved this: "...one day you'll understand that it's harder to be kind then clever...since cleverness is a gift and kindness is a choice"
and onE Day .... he is dead
that was really moved and meaningful
i am gifted to hear it..........
10/10 video. There are many commencement speeches out there that are incredible. However, this one stands out for me due to the ability to relate to everything he's saying. I think this is one that can really inspire me as a college student and the future choices I make.
Except for the part where it was shot with a cucumber lens.
Incredibly inspiring. It really spoke to me.
P.S. skip the 5 minute intro for the sculpted gem
@Harsh lol bruh
One of the best speeches. Thank you!
@harv83
I really do not have to know. But the point is, this is not a stage where you go about briefing the audience about what Amazon is for 5+ minutes. Everyone know, there could have been better things told about the same what was unknown.
Blessings
This is a beautiful video and the most worthwhile one I've seen in recent memory. I love his use of the phrase "the life you author."
Thank you for posting this.
This is hands down the best commencement address of all time
when he start talking about his grandparents i was thinking ".. ._.?" but when he ended, i was like, this makes sense º-º ~ its hard be clever than kind, cleververness is gift, kindness is choice.
Amazing.. Simply amazing speech..
very kind of you:)
Beautiful speech!
@dodojardin I thought is was kind and inspiring. My mother always used to say, "You can catch more flies with sugar then you can with vinegar".
and when you start your own start-up like diapers dot com and you build yourself a great story, he will squash you like a grape
Jesus this is like watching Milhouse give a speech until 9m45 - should I carry on..?
I LOVE Amazon. Thank you Jeff Bezos!!
Great speech!!
how old was he when he gave this speech?
In my view, Mr. Bezos presentation is perfection of excellence which comes from honestly blending sincere humility with creative genius and genuine caring. Those who recognize this have earned the right to view this video. Yes, absolutely, "it's harder to be kind than clever." In these days of easy anonymity it's even easier than ever to be lazily critical of everyone and everything. In days gone, certain types of criticism would have earned a red dripping nose.
was he expecting people to clap or at-least laugh when he says "At two minutes per puff, you've taken nine years off your life!" Cause it was a pretty long pause .
Great speech!
wow!!
Insparation speech of life of utilising choose and gifts by our own
@comster it's a good talk
very intresting to listen!
My favorite parts start at 10:00 and 15:40
A little slow to get going but excellent by the end
we are our choices... nice words!
Tell them.
Very inspiring and useful speech. The intro, though a bit slow, also has some good points from Jeff's success, so don't skip it.
starts at 5:50
In the end, we are our choices.
24billion per year. Pretty mad! From humble beginnings. Must be a hell of a ride
06:15 開始
talk starts at 6:26
Yeah man that's deep
In every language.
There is no doubt he has created one the most innovative company in the world, and he worked hard for it. But there are also other people out there who not only created amazing companies, they also kept their humanity and good work ethic. This guy has totally lost his human side when it comes to work ethic. The work condition in Amazon is almost the same as in a slavery camp.
I agree, there needs to be a balance.
Exactly!
I read his biography. When he started his company in 1995, he was competing against industries already entrenched in their niche category. Selling electronics competed with major electronic retailers, selling books competed with Barnes & Nobles, and dozens of others. Amazon in 2002 simply would not have survived had it had anything less than the work culture it has today. The company was nearly in total bankruptcy and major obstacles prevented the company from scaling at reduced cost.
Back then, Jeff simply hired the best and has them perform their best, nobody forced the first 500 Amazon employees to stay employed working 80+ hours a week when the company first started. The same concept applies today, Amazon is competing against a significant numbers of companies on the planet for market control and survival, nobody is forcing anyone to work at Amazon. Those who do work many hours at Amazon and thrive under their culture makes Amazon the successful company it is today.
@@Firebolt68 Ever heard of Sikandar also known as The Alexander.. The person who wanted to conquer the world ?
Kings and Emperors have used similar reasoning to expand and ever expand their kingdom/dominion from time immemorial ..
Business Tycoons are the new Imperialists. Kings and Emperors found it hard to be kind. And people like Jeff are same. Sword and weapon has been replaced by capital. The soldiers by the employees and management.
Wow Jeff it is very encouraging speech and teach us to live life with our choices and eventually what we are what we choices to be
I thought he was going to finish with a "Thank you and God Bless."
"harder to be kind than clever" - depends how clever you are or indeed how naturally kind you are. I personally find it easy to be both. I regard unkind people as stupid anyway.
Did he talk about his interest in "art films " ?
It's funny how rich & famous people say story so identical to our next door kids
Live your dream...
-G
Very good speech
Thank you, Jeff.
To tell you the truth I did not expect you to be such a wonderful narrator.
It seemed to me that in the end of his speech, pronouncing last words about 80 year old man he would start crying, so sensitive he was.
Bravo!
awesome speech :)
Nice speech
The woman at the beginning of the video almost caused me to stop watching - but don't! Jeff's talk is terrific.
That woman is Shirley Tilghman President of Princeton and molecular biologist.
What a not so nice comment.
Wow, what a sophisticated speech. Thank you my idol
Ataca que no me dejan usar tu app.Atackk.Acaban de poner Sonia debe estar implicada
Robot speaker drones, both of them!
@VideoJargon Thanks. lol.
@anvoro And I work outside in the arizona summer. What's your point? if the employees can find something better, with better conditions and pay, elsewhere, then they should go there. If not, then Jeff is doing them a favor.
For all the ppl who are mad cuz video is on 240p, just remember that 144p is still there and is waiting to take your screen to the next level of blurriness.
So his name is pronounced like xBayZos? Easy to remember, at least for me. :D
less*
A better man than Steve Jobs..actually..very humble and deep thinking man..Jeff Bezos the man of America..
For those bashing Amazon:
It's much easier to hate than to love.
It's much easier to complain than to create something great for mankind.
You can hate all you want (to make yourself feel better), it doesn't make you a better person than the ones you hate.
Love you all ****
This didn’t age well
This speech was deep Jeff Bezos is a great man.
In the end, We are our choices! Build yourself a great stroy..
+Emrah Gulden Yes, on the backs of others. Look up working conditions and HR policies at Amazon. You'll soon see a different side to Mr. Bezos.
MrSupernova111 the employees are not volunteering. They have a choice.
I am comfortable in prioritizing you over a thousand jenns'
specially since I have the experience to make much more informed decisions now, then I did before.
We are our choices.
The intro was annoyingly too long.
the difference between gifts and choices
What kind of clothes he wears
"The Last Safe Path".
Great speech mrs
the way she introduces Jeff is so annoying
Mohsen Chitsaz I think so
inspiring.
+Yosuke Hosoi Clearly, you never worked for the man.
@ateendra123 lol @ host
This was a great speech and it really hit home. I'm working on my storybook as i speak :)
i love Amazon!
