The other 2 worst are Giving Bad People Good Ideas and I Break Mirrors. All 3 of these songs are just blaring guitar drowning out uninteresting repetitive lyrics. I Break Mirrors is the worst because it kicks off their worst album.

The scratching is by DJ Swamp (deadass) and the maker of Shrek did the commentary on Dilemma, such a hilarious correlation imo

  • @johnsmith5669
    @johnsmith5669 6 лет назад +26

Off the top of my head, on the son Dilemma, the Andrew Adamson spoken word bit (and the subsequent music video) talks about/shows where the Rolling Stones recorded what a lot of people believe to be their best record Exile on Main Street, which was along with the previous album Sticky Fingers was a departure from the standard guitar, bass, drums instrumentation.
The first song on Exile on Main Street contained a horn section. There's a song called Horn Section (that doesn't have a horn section). And like Exile on Main Street, Year of the Snitch is a vast departure from Death Grips 'normal', for lack of a better word, sound.
Little Richard is obviously a reference to Little Richard, but it could also be a reference to Keith Richard. The Little could be talking about Keith plays a guitar with only five strings (he cuts off his low E strings); Death Grips make boundary pushing music with a drumset, a laptop, and a very loud man, but that's a stretch. It also could be on the Little Richard album King of Rock, he covers the song Brown Sugar. Among other things, King of Rock was criticized for being a departure from Little Richard's normal sound.
There's no direct relation I can think of between The Rolling Stones and Charles Manson. I think there could be 3 reasons why they're both referenced on this album.
    1. Charles Manson was infamously obsessed with the music of the Beatles. He used their albums to justify his murders, saying they foretold a war between blacks and whites. MC Ride's lyrics are rife with references to classic rock music, ie. I'm in Jimmy Page's castle or You Might Think He Loves You For Your Money, but I Know What He Really Loves You For It's Your Brand New Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat. What he could be saying is that, like Charles Manson, he sees the music he listens to as justifying his violence.
    2. The Rolling Stones, in a lot of ways, were the Death Grips of their day. Their music was violent, the were often getting in trouble with their label for their many many antics (as well as being banned from the United States for drug smuggling), and even today their music is controversial for being misogynistic, racist, etc. Moreover, like Death Grips, they often wrote songs from the perspectives of murderers. The song Midnight Rambler is again, still controversial today for describing the murders of the Boston Strangler. The song Stray Cat Blues is a song written from the perspective of a pedophile (or at least someone's whose okay with underage sex) trying to seduce a fifteen year old girl. This album could be saying that they (Death Grips) are the modern day equivalent of the Rolling Stones.
    3. The song Sympathy for the Devil (which is a song about the devil, that never directly references the devil), is often paired artistically with the infamous utterance "I am the Devil and I'm here to do the Devil's work." This album could just be a continuation of their longstanding morbid fascination with the Charles Manson, not to any artistic point, but to further peel back the layers (Shrek reference) of Ride's legitimately disturbing persona.

It sounded a lot mathier than their other albums in terms of the rhythm sections. Shitshow and The Horn Section sounded a lot like Hella songs to me. I also didn’t think about connecting the mouths on the cover to The Rolling Stones logo until u pointed it out. Great review for a great album

in "flies", there's a string of lyrics that goes "warm blanket, statement denver air terminal patient," where ride is jumping from term to term: "warm blanket / blanket statement / denver air terminal / terminal patient" - i think a similar thing is going on with the names of the people the album seems to be based around
linda kasabian was placed in custody, and she snitched on charles manson -> linda keith was briefly the girlfriend of keith richards, and was also placed in custody after he snitched on her -> richard chase was known as the "vampire of sacramento" (listen to the start of "the fear"), dg are sacramento-based -> there's a song on the album named after the musician little richard
    pretty big stretch, but hey

Every record they have is fire. I love how each album is so unique that it is hard to compare them, in terms of quality, to one another. Each album has it's own identity and personality that no two records sound similar yet still sound like Death Grips. No lateral progression from this bad for sure.

Good catch with the cover, never would have occurred to me.
If I had to speculate, I'd say that the connection between Manson and the Rolling Stones hinges upon an experimental short film called Invocation of My Demon Brother (1969), which was scored by Mick Jagger. The actor who portrays Lucifer in the film was a Manson affiliate named Bobby Beausoleil. And in addition to being the year that Linda Kasabian turned witness for the prosecution, '69 was a seminal year for the Stones (release of Let It Bleed and the Altamont concert).

The cool thing about YOTS' release IMO was how it took on a sort of artistry in itself:
    >Tracks that lead into other tracks which obviously don't work on their own like Streaky and Flies are released as singles as if purposefully giving a bad impression of the album
    >Singles give an impression of two or three themes which are rehashes from past albums and making it seem as though the whole record will be recycled sounds (further reinforced by Exmilitary samples on Black Paint)
    >Half the album is released as singles and the album is leaked a day early as if a play on the name "Year of the Snitch"
    >Some of the tracks not released as singles veer off in new directions for the group like Mr. Grips knew we'd be expecting more of the same from the singles

At first I didn't think much of this album until i realised that i'd listened to it 10 times over 2 days. Their best work since No Love Deep Web in my opinion. Love the instrumentals and how they often distort MC Ride's voice; almost making it an instrument in itself. Can't decide between Linda, Dilemma or The Fear being my favorite song. Anyways great review as usual Myke.

Couldn't find a reference in the comments, sorry if this has been brought up before. Maybe not super solid but there is a connection between the Stones and the Manson Family: Mick Jagger wrote the soundtrack to a short film called Invocation of My Demon Brother by director Kenneth Anger. The role of Lucifer in that film was done by Bobby Beausoleil who was part of the Manson Family, and is currenty serving life sentence for murder.

Surprised you didn't talk about The Fear, it was one of the most forward-stepping, powerful songs on the album for me. The jazzy rock so awesome to hear from DG of all bands, and it comes together as a really chilling window into Ride's suicidal thoughts. His vocal performance is insanely intense and it's made even more hard-hitting with the lyrics. Ride is on the edge of a balcony, unsure of whether to jump, struggling with schizophrenia and general misery. And throughout the song we see how much of a toll Death Grips has taken on him-
    "went there to shed years
    left there in lead chains
    been there since next year"
He feels enslaved by his own creation, and he's torn because he desperately desires an end (whether he's referring to literal death or death of the band, I'm unsure) but doesn't have the courage to do it. It's such a haunting, visceral song that genuinely embodies fear.
YotS is like the reverse of Bottomless Pit; where Bottomless Pit was about how much dominance Death Grips has over its fans, Year of the Snitch is about how we’ve impacted the band in a personal way. I love the album a LOT, somehow they always find a way to continue pushing it and make amazing projects.

I didn't think abt the Rolling Stones influences, that's freaky! Anyways, this is a weird album, sure, but it is loaded with all sorts of musical poppy, catchy melodies, hooks, and beats. If Ride wasn't so out of his mind on here I'd say it's their pop album. Like on Bottomless Pit, the music was more dense and hard, but Ride was all hooks and choruses. Snitch is the reverse IMO,. YOTS is more of a sister album to Government Plates, is another thing I noticed when shuffle put them one after the other. Govt is much weirder and tougher, but they both have an odd clarity that fits. IMO. So, cool video, def like to see you do a review of the Jean Grae & Quelle Chris album! Fantastic review Myke! I loved your analysis. Honestly I hated this album the first couple times I listened to it. However the more I listened to it, the more I started to figure out what they were trying to do and what direction they were going in. Now I think it’s a great album. It’s definitely one of their weirder records. It’s not as catchy but it’s more experimental and stripped back which I loved a lot. Like you said that’s the beauty of Death Grips, you never know what to expect and they always try to create new sounds and ideas to fuck with our heads. Keep it up and I’m hoping you do a Busdriver review soon too!

Something that I thought you'd comment more on was how this album sounded more metal in a lot of ways. The recording quality itself reminds me of more underground lowfi rock recordings like they're some cult band in the 70s. I know that sounds weird when songs like Streaky are on the album that could've only come out now but there's something about songs like Linda's in Custody, Shitshow, Dilemma, The Fear that sound like they're trying to pay homage to some of the more campy rock genres.

Great encrypting dude! been trying to figure this album out. my theory is death grips is characterizing themselves as Charles Manson and the fans are Linda. Linda committed a crime and got caught and blamed all her actions on Charles which gave her immunity.
death grips is online sets that up with lines like "color me a cult, echo in my throat" his voilent message gets stuck in your head like an echo..
also little richard could be about a troubled kid who commits acts of voilence in his college when people dont "see what he sees".
but good review dude! glad you checked out steroids. one of my favorite listens as well.

Yeah YOTS is a bit more laid back compared to the rest of their discography, I wouldn't say it's more accessible than stuff they've done in the past as a lot of it is still really insane, but it's subdued nature makes it easier to listen for people who may not be familiar.

For Flies: He means he is vomited on by the flies, not vomited by. Meaning, he is trying to get the flies to eat him or digest him. What I assume means he wants his listeners and the fans to "vomit on him" like flies do when they eat, is to digest and understand what he is saying with the lyrics (and he probably means it for the entirety of death grips' discography).
    Is this a stretch?

One of my favorite reviews that I've read about this album said that listening to it is similar to watching a G.G. Allin show (when he was alive), in the sense that it strucks to you that you are experiencing someone truly off the rails, completely in the abyss.
And I think that the analogy is spot on, bc the state of mind that I got from listening to YOTS is the same that I got when I read about the shit GG Allin did on himself for his art. They both left my impressed and a lil fuxked up.

    • @catalunyallibertat7
      @catalunyallibertat7 6 лет назад

I keep thinking about this, and I think that DG is maybe nearing their breaking point. It's like when those black/death metal bands from the early 90's got themselves too deep into the rabbit hole that either they went mad like Mayhem or turned themselves into gimmicks like Deicide.
Ride and Co have reached a very dark and troubled artistic hallmark with this album and they have to head back up, bc I think an artist can't continue to do this to himself without damaging himself, his audience or his art.

THANK YOU for the insight on Black Paint and Linda's in Custody. I knew Black Paint was in reference to Paint It, Black but I didn't know the religious meaning behind that song and connecting it to Black Paint really helps give context to it and deepen the meaning. Same goes for what you said about the pinot line in Linda's in Custody. That's my favorite song on the album so it's great to have something that will make me appreciate it even more.

I also think the video for Shitshow was an intentional trolling of RUclips that ties into theme you talked about. They already had the video for Culture Shock pulled late last year, so the issue of censorship on RUclips was definitely present on their minds.

Great review, appreciate how you try and delve into the lyrics a bit instead of purely focusing on the sound.
Yots is definitely its “own thing” in the context of the DG discography; each album kind of has a different vibe/sound. I’ve labelled this albums sound as “insane carnival punk” haha.

A lot of the album is an homage to the Stones. Of course we have the direct reference with the cover, and Black Paint being somewhat of a DG take on "Paint it Black." Many people have pointed at the Snitch of the album being Linda Kasabian which makes sense as she snitched on the Manson family and their are songs like "Linda's in Custody" and the fact they leaked it on her birthday and other lyrical references. Although I do think it is partly about her, I also think its about Linda Keith, a girlfriend of Keith Richards (going back to the Stones). Keith Richards snitched on Linda to her parents saying she did drugs, which landed her in custody. The only reason this connection can be made is because a while back DG posted a picture of Keith Richards autobiography "Life," cut into pieces. In the book, Richards also makes mention that the first record he ever brought was by Little Richard which starts to tie things together. For me, this album is a take on many things, one of them primarily being what we saw in the picture of the cut up book: Death Grips making their warped version of the Rolling Stones put to wax. I do think its also about Linda Kasabian but I think thats more of a red herring than anything. Btw, a lot of this info I found on the internet and dont wanna take credit for hard work put into these theories.

"Black Paint" is also my favorite. Maybe one of the best songs they ever put out. But most of the tracks are meh for me tbh although I loved their last album "Bottomless Pit".

Yo mike. Great review. Love your channel and your vids.
If i had one thing to say, I think your videos would flow better in some parts if you cut out some of the space after statements you make. The pauses linger for a little too long.
All love though. As I said, I love your stuff.

I know you're not being a jerk or nuthin but I think the pauses are for effect. They're in between thoughts. I think it would flow worse if he just ran everything together like one long thought...

Definitely top 10 of the year as well as a great album overall. I’ll definitely be listening to the album more and more, although I don’t think it’s in the top 3 Death Grips albums. I feel like Bottomless Pit is personally my favorite (and probably my favorite album of all time), then The Money Store, then The Powers That B/Exmilitary in the same place.

I think flies is more about Ride's relation to fans and listeners consuming the material he and death grips produce and how he's taking a step back in the creative process and the vision of the band to bring something new which can be foresighted with the closer on the powers that b and the track "eh". I definitely can see more influence from Zach Hill and the ILYs music

I find the "My grief may leak but can’t congeal" to be more about solidifying your woes as something specific. Ride seems to be distinctively vague when it comes to lyrics, you won't catch him taking a stance politically/socially (something I fuck with to no end) on a song. But you can't deny the power of what's he's saying, hence the first part of the line. Obv. not gonna argue on how legit my interpretation is, but seems pretty DG to me.
