I completely agree with you about Jaya being one of the best setup arcs. It has really good pacing and a lot of really interesting seeds planted for the future.

It helps that the shorter arcs are usually not based around fighting, but worldbuilding. It makes them concise and interesting.
FYI , Whitebeard (Shirohige)and Blackbeard (Kurohige) still fit their namesake in japanese , because "hige"is the word to refer to pretty much any facial hair , not specifically the beard . Of course Oda also knew about the legendary and renowned Black Beard when he thought of that
It's extra noticeable when you take Whitebeard and Blackbeard's real names into account, which is a direct reference to the historical pirate. Edward Newgate and Marshall D. Teach respectively. The Whitebeard commander Blackbeard murdered is also another reference, as Thatch is one of several names Edward Teach was historically referred by.

At first glance, it looks like a normal western name. But because almost every name in OP uses the Japanese way to write them, "Edward" is his family name, and "Newgate" his first/given name.
"Marshall D. Teach" is the same way. "Teach" is the first name. (Like "Monkey D. Luffy".)

I absolutely love the way One Piece solves the Shonen power creep issue. Having the people they meet and face off against become more powerful as they continue to travel the grand line makes complete sense because of how the world is built. Roger started the great pirate era and all the pirates seeking the One Piece are traveling in that direction but the weaker ones either give up or are defeated along the way. Some settle down. The navy needs to deploy its forces accordingly in order to maintain a balance. It just works.
and of course all the powerful people are gathered closer and closer towards the deepest parts of the grand line, because thats were the one peice is as well as where the great powers that rule the world and determine the direction of the era are all settled regardless.

Yeah I also really love Jaya, it's so compact and efficient, especially be One Piece standards. Also Bellamy getting his clock cleaned like he's some random mook never gets old. I'm so glad you decided to continue. Your One Piece reactions are some of my favourites, and I'm always looking forward to the next one.
Jaya is a good setup, it puts things into motion.
They're basically speed running the Grand Line, not much time has passed between Luffy setting out for the first time and now.
We have over 1100 episodes now, obviously there will be times that are frustrating, but you don't get to 1100 episodes with an inferior product.
Side note; I don't foresee a time where I will ever be tired of hearing "We Are." The OG theme song has a special place in our hearts.
That spot on the Going Merry... and any ship from One Piece... where you can hear any conversation and project your voice magically is called the "Romanticism"

Jaya is easily an S tier arc. No doubt about it.
I feel Skypea is S tier in the manga as well. Hopefully the new adaption will do justice to the arc

the reasons why Jaya is the best is because there is a lore of the story. So onepiece is always feel great when the reveal of the lore from the story
It's not recency bias. I still rate Jaya in my top five and Im caught up with the manga.

I'm glad you guys stay forward and honest in your videos. Its one of the reasons I started checking out your FMA:B reactions and now this and others. It fun to see a fresh and different perspective on these shows I love. Sometimes I agree with you, sometimes I don't but either way I enjoy the commentary you provide.

Jaya is one of my favourite arcs (especially after knowing everything that is being set up).
I really hope you will enjoy Sky Island. I personally really like it, but there will be parts that will bother you.
Just please don't give up on One Piece until you've at least watched the big arc after Sky Island. It's my favourite arc.

I would be like Usopp and Nami, the knock up stream is terrifying😅 it also kills me when they say to hold on right before going up and you see some of them just lightly putting their hands on the mast or the railing lmao
People both irl and in universe often view bounties as something of a power level, but it is shown that it isn't. Between when the story started, and now, Luffy hasn't really gotten stronger, well not in the traditional shonen way... He has just done more things. This allows for people with lower bounties or no bounties to be extremely strong, and people with crazy high bounties to be non threats in a combat sense.
Like others have said, the show is still 2D, it just uses 3D sometimes like most shows these days. I think it is funny that you brought it up in this episode though, because the Knock Up Stream looks 3D to me.
I am super concerned that he won't make it through the next arc. I personally like it a lot (especially in manga) but I know is pretty unpopular in a big part of the fandom.

I do wish they would’ve set up more of the sky islands previously and developed them more later as less of a myth because they really do just be a plot whole for most of the world
Although the anime cropped it out in some instances, the part where Blackbeard holds up the bounty posters you can see Usopp on Zoro's poster, similar to how he's on Luffy's poster. However, it's Usopp when he was pretending to be Crocodile to get in that mindset and find the bomb.
Captains get a higher bounty by default in general. So Zoro's bounty is worth much more than Bellamy. But also Bellamy clearly doesn't care much about civilian casualties and has been on the grand line for much longer, so his bounty comes more from accumulated incidents while Zoro's is his first bounty.

Prepare yourself because this arc is very, I mean VERY tedious, so be patient, because this is gonna be a long one.
I would have a comment about powerscaling, but it's better to let the story develop and you understand. Yes, 9 episodes is a small arc. You'll get arcs that have more than 100 episodes.
The pacing will... not always be... great.
Yeah, I personally don't like One Piece much until after Skypia. I understand it is important for the end game but that was like 15 years later, I couldn't know at the time. I actually stopped in Skypia and wasn't intending to get back... It is much better now when I look back at it, but almost everything do, as Oda is a master foreshadower and writer to set things up.
I'm pretty sure the only 3D animation is from the 11th movie but those aren't canon.
The animation usually just gets better so it can keep up with the action even though I still really love the cozy old animation style.
there's some minor 3d work on some shots of Kaido that i recall and i know there are a few scant other examples but it's really not that big of a deal. The vaaaast majority of the show is still firmly 2d, even in the current season.
@LordZeebee that's a good point, I kinda forgot about those moments because they're pretty sparse and well integrated.

I thin regarding one eice an you potentially dropping whn pell lived, I think the lows of the story's quality hit harder for some because 1) peple react differntly to different things, so what may be a non-issue for some is a huge deal for other,s but also, and more pertinently to you 2) the lows are so rare they feel a lot more powerful and glaring because of the many highs of the story. For every 'pell lived' moment that may make some hate the story, there's many moore 'we are' moments that mae you hyped to see more.
just my two cents.
Honestly prefer you to drop an arc vs the series. Long Ring Long Land for instance is right before peak One Piece but is a cannon arc widely seen as worse than the filler arc before it.
I personally found a certain point where I almost dropped the series for a bit because I just did not like the pace of one arc.
But its a show with ebb and flow so for every shit arc are 2 great ones so its worth sitting through the rough patches.
hope you wont skip the skypea... its realy inportant later on... and the finals... man... thats anime gold! :D

Sadly, Jaya is the last arc with a good pace (2 chapters per episode) but it's also when the scale of the aventures shifted to a world scale with the two beards, the council 5, the 7 warlords and the big marines.
Until now, the only big names were only Mihawk and maybe Crocodile who is the weakest or second weakest warlord.
Skypiea is part of OP golden age for me (between the Alabasta arc until the next saga after Skipea) but the anime pace really butchered the greatness of the arc that could be far better with 10 episodes less.
Bro some of the great moments heavily outweigh the shit points of One Piece. Just keep in mind its a really long show and there are filler and plotpoints that suck or are boring. Just push through or skip if you have to but the overall story is great

man, what makes me age like milk is the fact I for most of a relationship talked to my gf via Skype (also yes, VIDEO and all not catfished)
well the sad reality of the bounties is the comparison to dragon ball z power levels..... thats exactly what they are. they are just an indicator of power. though in DBZ we see their power level go up through training in one piece the bounty goes up just by beating someone above them and everywhere we go we move up the line in terms of power levels aka bounties. so its literally the same thing just a different name. one of my biggest problems with one piece was the lack of showing how our crew is getting stronger. theres very little training while you would see that all the time in dragonball. not that one piece never does it but its certainly much rarer. are least in the anime. instead we get plenty of wasted screen time showing pointless crowd jaw drops and filler arcs which have even less stakes than the main arcs because in the main arcs we know they can survive anything so in the filler arcs not only do we know they cant be harmed we know whatever the status of the crew at the end of the last canon episode has to circle back to at the end of filler for continuity

Hey can you go back and watch episode 135? It was a flashback to when Zoro was a bounty hunter and how he met Johnny and Yosaku. It’s an anime only scene, but I suggest you watch it
I admire your honesty about dropping shows you don't like but I think it's a shame that a person as sensible and smart as you will not experience a masterpiece like Vinland Saga. It's like The Last of Us, the plot is simple but the characters are complex. There are scenes where it looks like the writer wanted to reach the stars. For once there was a show with more adult and philosophical themes and one of the best character development I ever seen and you dropped too early. I know you said you would do a review of the series, but it's never coming, right?
